Rubber Soul Jacket @ Mako Magellan
Forty-three years ago almost to the day, John Lennon wrote the Beatles’ first song that wasn’t about love. It was to appear on an album called Rubber Soul, and after that album, neither the Beatles nor popular music would ever be the same.
He’s a real Nowhere Man
Sitting in his nowhere land
Making all his nowhere plans
For nobody.
Doesn’t have a point of view
Knows not where he’s going to
Isn’t he a bit like you and me?
Nowhere Man, please listen. You don’t know what you’re missing.
Nowhere Man, the world is at your command.
He’s as blind as he can be
Just sees what he wants to see
Nowhere Man, can you see me at all?
…Making all his nowhere plans for nobody.
Then again, for some of us, it is about matters of the heart after all….
Mako Magellan crafted his Rubber Soul Jacket using photographs of the supple brushed tan leather garment that John Lennon wore on the cover of Rubber Soul. Like the album, the jacket is simple and beautiful and full of bittersweet sharp memories. I swear there’s a chip of norwegian wood in one of the pockets and wrinkles from sleeping in the bathtub. It’s only L$250 at Mako Magellan’s main shop, or you can torture yourself still further and pick it up as I did, at the new branch just across the street from Bogart’s.
(Oh, and while you’re in there, do have a look at the new wingtip shoes. They say shopping can heal anything.)
Photos taken in Liverpool, Mathew Street.
