Ronin Jeans & Things @ WMD
June 16th, 2008 at 09:19am Mr. Oh
I don’t care how cut up they are, they’re currently my favourite pair of jeans and I’m going to wear them. They’ve got a lot of life left in them and they’re comfortable and they’re so London. The Union Jack on the front is ok, innit? But the London Underground logo on the back pocket is well bad. And I’ve washed the things so many times that the reds and blues are just faded enough. But the best part — you ready for this? — the best part of all is I can wear ‘em with anything. ‘Cos they’re actually two jeans in one. Low risers, for sure, you’ll see them in the other photos, but these are the high risers. Both in the same folder, pick whichever suits your top. Safe. They’re handmade for you by Maruko Sakigake of WMD — how can you not love a company named Weird Monkey Design? They come in lots of colours and designs; mine are Ronin London Edition; L$199 for the two pairs. There’s also a plain blue set for the special knock-down of L$50. Go get ‘em.
While you’re at the shop, have a look at the tops as well. There’s a cracking leather jacket in military green. It’s dark enough to be earthy and understated, but light enough that the seams, shadows, and great zip show up clearly. The ribbed elastic at the bottom hugs your hips reassuringly, and you can wear it just open enough to show off whatever you’re wearing underneath. Leather long jacket is reasonably priced at L$200 per colour — there are black and brown versions as well as the green.
Finally, here’s one of the long tees. Great lettering, but unfortunately the tees are currently only available on the jacket layer so can’t be worn underneath the leather jackets. Before I could comment on this, Maruko volunteered: “This was terrible error. For the tee shirt, I must make also other layers.” I thought “terrible error” was a bit excessive, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see multiple-layer tops at the store soon. Like the other long tees at the shop, the “For Ever Rock Life” tee shirt on jacket layer is L$100.
You’ll find the largest selection of WMD clothes at their “summer mansion” location: HollandCoast 2 (70, 231, 22). While there, you might like to drop in on Juju’s (mostly women’s) Clothes, designed by Maruko’s lovely partner, Juwan Lane. I’ll mention two other WMD locations, however, because of the great shops you’ll find around them. One is at “The Cube” at Shreckhorn (15, 95, 37) — check out the dead cool neko ‘chucks’ — and the other at Sinatra (192, 173, 22), mentioned in one of Express’s articles a while back because of the free ‘Sinatra’ zipped t-shirt, still available there.

Very nice fabric texture work on the jeans overall–I picked up the “Nekoholic” pair. And of course the Neko Chucks, which I’m certain Mr. Oh mentioned here solely to tempt me.
