The Drifter grabbed the body now laying lifeless on the stone and dragged it around a corner of the building, leaving plain sight. He was breathing heavy, sweating, his eyes darted around searching for movement. His ears were keen, listening for any kind of alarm.
He paused and listened, holding the man by the collar of his jacket. He wiped the sweat from his eyes with a forearm and quieted his breathing, straining for any sound. Nothing. How lucky can you get? he thought. He’d been on the run for months now. This running was differerent - running away instead of to someplace. He squatted down beside the dead body, letting the strength return. Fighting for your life tends to take it out of you, even if it is a short fight. He’d changed his appearance as best he could, cutting his hair, growing some facial stubble. It wasn’t much but at least it was something. He’d even had to lose the clothing he’d spent so much for, bundling them up and throwing them in the river, stealing a pair of rugged farmer pants and an old pullover for a shirt. He’d made his way along the river, breaking into a flat out run for kilos when the baying of the houndslogs started up behind him. Somehow he’d managed to stay ahead and finally lose them. He’d wandered for days, finally catching up a caravan to Penelos, a small village. He’d managed to find some work there, enough to make food money and keep out of sight. So many times he’d see some passer-by gazing at him just a little too long. It kept him awake at night, listening for the inevitable attack. It never came. Maybe he was just paranoid. Glancing down at the body at his feet, he knew he wasn’t too paranoid.
Is this the best they could do? he thought. The man was swift and agile, but The Drifter had him under control in barely two quantos. Would the Luninares send somebody this poorly equipped, untrained? the thoughts ran through his head. No, this was probably just a bounty hunter, which wasn’t a good sign either. It meant the word about him was getting out and there was a price on his head.
The Drifter looked at the man, his neck crooked. A shock of red hair framed a square face with deep-set green eyes. Poor guy, he was probably ten years the junior of The Drifter. He was a fool! A fool for many things! A fool to come after him and think the reward would be easy, a fool for believing in The Lottery! The Lottery was rigged! That thought ran over and over in The Drifter’s head. The Lottery was rigged. It had to be.
He’d seen enough!
The man’s clothes caught The Drifter’s eye for the first time. Before, all thoughts were on survival. Now, the smooth black leather, red trimmings, metal fastenings and cloth all seemed oh so familiar. He hand still grasped the collar, now he ran it along the edge. It felt so smooth and fine. He traced his finger along the edges of the leather jacket, finally throwing it open and seeing the shirt beneath. It was a shimmering white material, fastened with black buttons up the center and a wide collar itself. He grasped the material between his fingers and rubbed it together, memories flooding him. I’ll be, he thought, old DoC has been busy while I’ve been out here running for my life! He noticed the triangular belt buckle fastening the wide leather belt. There was a design in the center, looked something like an eye.
A second low-slung strap ran along the bottom of the belt. A pair of long leather, laced-up gloves covered the man’s hands. The Drifter turned the man over. A small red leather pouch was attached to one side.
He opened it up revealing some coin and a wad of paper currency. This would do him for a while! On the other side a red rag or cloth hung. I wonder what this means, he thought. He stifled a laugh, maybe this amateur bounty hunter was really a stroke of luck. He looked down at his own worn clothing, remembering the outfit from DoC. This outfit was even better. A LOT better. It took more than a handful of copper to get this out of DoC’s shop. He looked around, seeing a close doorway. He dragged the body over and proceeded to strip him of his unneeded clothing. He then stripped himself and slowly fitted his new outfit, relishing the feeling with each piece of garment applied. He straightened himself up, pulling the wrinkles out of the new jacket. He felt alive again. He fingered the pouch at his side, tonight he’d have a good meal and a hot bath. He looked down at the now naked figure in the doorway, grabbed his old clothes and threw them on the body, half covering it up. He ran his fingers through is dusty hair, turned around and walked in the direction of the marketplace.
