New: Trench coats @ SiniStyle Design

full_length.jpgI think this is the first time I’ve reviewed a big-ticket item like this–I’ve been kind of reluctant to recommend that you go out and spend so much of your hard-earned L$ on something extravagant.  Then again, everything you buy in SL is a luxury, right?  Or entertainment, depending on how you look at it.  And when you consider that some shoes cost this much, maybe it’s not so expensive after all.  ;)  Designer Krius Misfit has done a truly amazing job on this coat, the Nomad Trencher, available in brown only (the Phantom Stranger Trencher is available in black).

Here’s what you get for your money: Trench coat with shirt (also includes an open-shirt option), jeans, gloves, flexiprim coat bottom, prim fuzzy collar, and optional prim hood (in small and large sizes).  Now here’s what it all looks like.

no_shirt.jpgThe coat itself is made up of two pieces: the coat top, a regular clothing item (the coat top is combined with the underlying shirt and worn on the jacket layer), and the coat bottom, which is a flexiprim attachment.  The coat can be worn with either a closed or open shirt underneath.  The bottom attachment is fully moddable for size and placement, so you can fit it perfectly to your avatar.  Proper sizing and placement of this piece is the real trick to making the coat look like a single garment, so be careful and patient.  The flexiness of the coat bottom seems just right to me–it drapes rather than flows, so it doesn’t trail behind you like a long skirt when you walk, but never seems stiff.  Great stuff!  The leather texturing on the coat sections gives it a great distressed, worn-in look.  The seaming all looks real and feels authentic.  How many times can I say “Wow!”?

fuzzy_collar_front.jpgThe coat’s fuzzy spread collar is technically optional, as it’s a separate prim attachment, but it gives the coat such a great look that I don’t recommend leaving it off.

fuzzy_collar_back.jpgHere you see front and back views of the fuzzy collar.  The optional hood is pictured below.  I am wearing the small hood; the large hood is suitable for larger avatars.

The fingerless gloves with knuckle cutouts complete the whole look–clearly you are serious and ready for business.  If you’ve been looking for a really impressive trench or greatcoat, this may be just the ticket!

[...] Sometimes you want a coat to do more than just keep you warm.  You may want it to define your style, reflect your mood, present a particular image–or all of the above.  For the last few months, my favorite coat in this category has been Krius Misfit’s Nomad Trencher.  That amazing coat is now joined by another: the Red Star Army Overcoat, by designer Govindira Galatea of D3volution: Fashion Undone.  This coat is a masterpiece of careful, thoughtful design and attention to detail.  From the bright red piping on the collar and lapels to the beautiful, rough cloth texture and seam detailing to the hypnotic swing of the coat bottom, every element contributes to the illusion of a single elaborate garment.  To me, this kind of design work, texturing and building is just as impressive as the design and building of a house, even though it’s “only” clothing. [...] The shorter jacket is a single clothing piece, worn on the jacket layer.  The longer coats are made up of two pieces, the coat top on the jacket layer, the coat bottom and tails on the skirt layer.  The mid-length coat (pictured at right) falls to just above the knee.  As the coat bottom and tails are skirt-layer clothing items and not flexiprim attachments, they don’t move and sway like some other coats.  However, they still look great and will make lesser demands on the simulator for your region, which may be a consideration if you’re a guest at a big party or other event with a large number of attendees.
