New: Spider Bite Suit @ GearShift

May 19th, 2007 at 02:00pm Catero Revolution

gearshift_snapshot_008.jpgIn the midst of struggling against the usual teenage demons of rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness, socially awkward Peter Parker finds himself endowed with extraordinary abilities. Superhuman strength, the capacity to cling to walls, a sixth sense that forewarns him of danger, perfect balance, speed and agility. A web-slinging hero, Spider-Man is poised to face a rogue’s gallery of powerful thieves, gangsters, and megalomaniacs. All this power and responsibility brought by the bite of an irradiated spider.

gearshift_snapshot_010.jpgFollowing the wake of the cascading adventures of Spider-Man 3, GearShift swings into action with a themed ensemble dedicated to the webbed wonder. Unlike the average suit this one isn’t necessarily intended to add to your professional appearance exclusively in the boardroom. The “Spider Bite Suit” aims at netting an audience of savvy urbanites looking for something less corporate with an edgy street wise appeal. Going beyond the usual novelty clothing components, Donovan Brennen has created an entire themed suit that weaves together all the myth, mood, and magic that fans of the comic serials and movie franchise have come to associate with their friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.

gearshift_snapshot_009.jpgWebheads and fashionistos alike will enjoy the fine detailing of “Spider Bite”, a suit that comes with nine clothing components: 2 jackets (one with tucked shirt and another with untucked shirt), 2 pairs of pants (belted and unbelted), 2 collars (plain and with tie), an untucked shirt, a tucked shirt, and skirt extension for the jackets. The set also includes a notecard with tips and instruction on resizing the collar and tie as well as a reference image illustrating the ways which wearers can vary the look of the suit.

Donovan explains, “It’s a style that says, ‘I’m business … but not afraid to rock’“.

gearshift_snapshot_011.jpgPortions of the black pants and jacket texturing have been created using even diagonal crosshatch lines. The jacket has been distinguished as a focal point for the outfit with nebulous webbing strung up the sleeves and the spider symbol dripping down the rear panel, backed by red swash strokes soaked into the fabric.

Peeling off the jacket will reveal a wine-coloured dress shirt that is likewise branded with the arachnid mark on the left breast panel. On its reverse the seemingly random spattering of bleached out spots is actually an illustrative casting of Spider-Man in a crouch position. Wearing the tie will unite the outfit as it incorporates the warm and muted burgundy tone of the shirt in accenting its own spider and utilizes the webbing from the sleeves in its design.

gearshift_snapshot_012.jpg“Spider Bite” commemorates that single epiphanous and life changing moment where the ordinary became extraordinary. The brooding suit exudes all the personal turmoil of our hero, torn between two worlds, relying on his own wit and intuition to combat the demons of his private and public lives. All-in-all the suit is one to be worn with an air of nonchalance. A wealth of soft shaded wrinkles accentuate lines of frequent movement and shows that the wearer has no care for the formality of dry cleaning. Brennen puts a contemporary spin on the traditional and maintains the integrity of the subject without going overboard.

Let your Spidey senses tingle, alerting you to a devilishly good-looking fashion choice the closer you get to one of the GearShift chain of stores in Downtown (182, 98, 102), Endicott (162, 76, 506) or The Block (159, 38, 24). You may want to make your visit coincide with today’s Block Party 5 at 12 p.m. SLT, where Donovan will have an exclusive GearShift goodie on sale today only.

FYI, the “Spider Bite” suit was Ben’s outfit of the day on May 15th over at SLMen.com.

Gah, and the comic-book clothes just keep coming! I can’t afford them all!

Excellent review, Cat. I’m hanging on to it as a model for what I should be doing. :)

Hmm, I thought I had made this comment previously. Apparently not. ;)

I’ve been loving Donovan’s design work for a while now–his use of color and pattern have been, imho, exceptional. His new comics-influenced designs are rockin’ my socks, though. Way to go, Donovan! Keep up the great work.
