New: Road Agent Coats @ Civvies

April 4th, 2007 at 07:10pm Ryan Darragh

road_agent_brown_full.jpgbrotherhood_of_the_wolf_dvd.jpgI was chatting a few days ago with Posy Trudeau about her new Road Agent Coats, which have such a striking and interesting look that I had to ask where she got her inspiration.  She responded, “Partly from the movie ‘Brotherhood of the Wolf.’”  That was all it took–as soon as she said the words, I remembered the unique collar of the heavy leather coats worn by characters in that interesting (if imperfect) film.  I raved about what a great stylistic influence this was, and we went on to talk about what we liked and disliked about that film, the availability of the director’s cut on DVD, classics from the Shaw Brothers, movies we’ve seen (“Zodiac”) and would like to see (“The Host”), and “The X-Files.”  Yeah, this is what I love about Second Life.  :D

road_agent_detail_cuffs.jpgThe Road Agent Coat is made up of one clothing item on the jacket layer and several prim attachments.  All feature a rich distressed leather texture, with detailed stitching and large, simple buttons.

road_agent_detail_belt.jpgThe coat skirt, belt and wrist straps are nicely flexi, and the large square buckles are rough, worn and aged.  This coat is sturdy enough to make it around the world with you once or twice, and in fact may already have made the trip.  There is just that one missing button you’ve been meaning to replace…eventually, later on, after you get back home.

road_agent_detail_collar.jpgTwo copies of the collar attachment are included, and it can be worn as either a chin or chest attachment without repositioning on your avatar.  This is both clever and thoughtful on Posy’s part, and may help you to avoid conflicts with other attachments, such as a hat or necklace.  Speaking of hats–all I need now is a tricorner hat, and the ensemble is complete.

road_agent_no_collar.jpgAlthough the prim collar attachment covers the entire collar area of the jacket garment, the jacket’s collar is fully detailed and finished, so it can be worn without the prim collar for another, less mysterious (and ominous?) look.  For me, though, the collar is a big part of what makes this coat stand out, and I kinda hate to leave it off.  The Road Agent Coats are a fine addition to the roster of other great coats we’ve had the pleasure of reviewing in the last few months.

road_agent_brown_high.jpgDon’t think that Posy and spent?all our time talking about pop culture entertainment, though.? We talked about serious stuff, too!  :D

Posy:  There are real artists and designers out here [in SL] making clothes.  That’s what’s fun.  I just make what interests me and if people like it, it’s icing on the cake.

Ryan:  I think that’s why it’s legitimately a form of artistic expression.

Posy:  Honestly, I don’t know what I’d do without it.  I’ve been a graphic designer for many years, and my RL job isn’t always as creative as I like…and this is my outlet.  I haven’t sketched for years…[but] I’m constantly sketching ideas for my stores.

road_agent_brown_back.jpgRyan: It’s awesome that you’ve found this creative outlet for yourself.  So many people go through life, never make the time for anything beyond the day job.  :(

Posy: It’s such a strange concept for people who’ve never experienced it.  My best friend doesn’t really understand why I’m geeking on my computer so much.

Ryan:  I think there are people who “get it” and people who don’t.  Probably no way to bridge the gap, really.  I watch out for the eyes glazing over…time to change the subject.

Posy: LOL…I hear ya.

A pause, then:

Posy:  I grew up watching old Star Treks with my dad.

Ryan: Oh, that explains EVERYTHING.  ;)

Posy: *nods*

I loved Brotherhood of the Wolf as well. Keep meaning to buy the Directors Cut.

I gotta get one of these jackets. Thanks for profiling this!

Aah, Brotherhood of the Wolf. I bought one of these the moment I saw it — it was kind of a convulsion — and since then I wear it whenever I can trump up an excuse to do so, and I’ve spent a lot of time staring at myself wondering what about the collar was naggingly familiar. I had been thinking it looked like something I’d seen in an anime or a Japanese video game, and in fact it probably does, especially with my hair, but I love Brotherhood of the Wolf (for all of its sometimes bizarre flaws) and that was almost certainly what I was actually, if subconsciously, thinking about. (Though I could make a good argument for Brotherhood of the Wolf as basically a live-action French anime. Try to think of a single scene in that film that wouldn’t make perfect sense translated into that format. I’ll bet you L$1 you can’t. It even has the juxtaposition of wildly disparate thematic elements [martial arts monster costume drama!] and the plot that goes completely off the rail four fifths of the way through the film that I consider hallmarks of anime.)

What was I saying? Oh yeah. This is a fantastic coat.

Where can I find a good tutorial for making clothing like this? All I can seem to find is form fitting shirts and such, but this is the kind of thing I want to learn!

    Bad mofo trenchcoat at Civvies…

I saw a write-up on Men’s Second Style about this new trenchcoat by Posy Trudeau and knew I just had to have it. Clearly reminiscent of the trenchcoats worn in the crazy great French film Brotherhood of the Wolf, your…

There are a ton of free clothing creation classes in-world. Just check out the SL events listings under “education.”

How about getting “Creating Your World” by Catherine Omega and Aimee Weber. Can’t think of two more qualified builders I’d like to learn from.

    Great suggestions from rikomatic!

What amazes me about garments like this is the combination of clothing items (in this case, the upper jacket piece) with prim attachments (everything else) that are of course built. This seems like it would bring a whole new set of challenges to the clothing design process.

Maybe Posy or another designer will post a quick comment here with some insights on this type of “hybrid” clothing design? Posy and I didn’t quite get there in our chat…I think we were distracted by our inner geeks. ;)

Hello! Thank you everyone for your kind comments :-) First I want to mention another reason I included 2 collars with the coat… if you attached it to your chest, your head will move around in the collar and the collar will stay put, with the buttons lined up (this is how I like to wear it). If you attach it to your mouth/chin, the collar will move around with your head, which is what my bf, Donovan, requested ;-) It’s all a matter of preference…

As for how to make clothing like this… you really have to just play around with prims and textures to get the effect you want… believe me, this coat took several rounds of revisions before I had an acceptable final product. Study the prim clothing already out there, but make sure you put your own personal creative twist on it . Just experiment and have FUN!

And Ryan, thank you for the nice and, as always, entertaining review. I’m looking forward to more chats :-) By the way… what do you think of William Shatner WEARING the Road Agent Coat??? HAWT!

That is a truly vivid mental picture, Posy. I shall wash, but I shan’t be clean.

After reading this review at work yesterday, as soon as I got home I logged into SL with the only goal being to find this store and buy this coat!

I have just been feeling to need to find men’s clothing which do not look painted on – I want layers, and detail and movement – - and finally, it’s here! (And there needs to be more men’s clothing with prims, I say!)

The CIVVIES store in and of itself is really cool, I love how it’s set up. Smaller than I thought, as I had hoped to find numerous more items of a quality such as the coat was described. But I’ll settle for quality over quantity any day.

Anyway, I bought the coat (easily my most expensive clothing item in SL to date) and it is very nice! Until now, I’ve only had a flexi tie and a flexi scarf, so having a coat with flexi action was such a wonderful change for me. It doesn’t flow too much as to look flimsy, it actually looks like it has weight and substance to it, which is realistic.

Also, I had several girls right away comment they loved the detail and could not stop alt+zooming in on it, hehe.

My only issue is that the seat of my pants were visible through the back of the jacket when I stood still. So, I am going to have to try and figure out how to adjust that. My main concern being that the jacket is NO COPY and if I screw something up, I’ve wasted a lot of money. I am hoping I can get some tips from Posy on how to make such adjustments, either here or in-world before I start messing with it, hehe.

Great review, Ryan… Great product, Posy. Thanks to you both!

    Hi Wrath…

When selling clothing, you kind of have to choose between making your items “copy” or “trans”. You never want both or people will just give copies of your clothes away (sorry if that was obvious…lol)

Anyhow, everything I sell is mod, so you should be able to mod the bottom of your coat, either by scaling it larger overall, or rotating so the back is a little higher… I have an apple bottom booty, so I have to mod pretty much every prim skirt that I buy this way. And if you mess up, just IM me and I’ll happily give you a new one :-)

If your pants show through the coat only when you’re standing still, you shouldn’t have much trouble adjusting to cover that. More problematic for me is when only certain movements or animated AO stances cause show-through. After a certain point, I think you just have to accept it and move on–it’s an imperfect second world, after all. ;)

I understand that prim skirts often come with “modesty pants” (terminology? help me out here) with the same pattern/texture as the skirt prims, to help avoid or minimize show-through. Not sure how effective this would be with men’s coats, as we don’t necessarily want to wear pants in the same finish as the coat.

Cool – thank you for the tips, Posy!! I am excited (and still a bit nervous, hehe) to try and see if I can make that minor adjustment.

Needs to be done, however – as that coat is just way too nice to collect dust in my inventory. ;-)

And please keep making men’s clothing!!!!

I also like the Brotherhood of the wolf film, especially the long leather coats at the start of the film. I was wondering if any one knew where I would be able to purchase a replica piece, i have been looking everywhere on the net.

  • 17. Ryan Darragh  |  January 3rd, 2009 at 12:38 pm

I have not yet found a “Brotherhood of the Wolf” coat available for purchase, but I did run across the website for AbbyShot, a specialty clothier that has created some replica items. Apparently they solicit suggestions and track interest as they decide what projects to pusue next. One idea mentioned some time back (wow, February 2006) is a “Brotherhood” coat. You can check out the newsletter item here (scroll toward the bottom), and contact them to express your interest. Good luck!
