I came to with a start, my head jerking up. It ached and my eyes hurt. I laid my face back down on the cold concrete floor. Everything was buzzing and spinning, the world had become fuzzy. I could hear the sound of shoes scuffling on the floor but my eyes wouldn’t focus. 1MelRemnant1.jpgNow if I could just remember how I got here and what I was doing here. The last thing I could remember was being in a bar in Capistran, a small harbor town. I had finally found some peace. It had been months since the encounter with the bounty hunter and had to run, paranoia following me everywhere I went. It was impossible to be in a populated area and still be able to sleep and eat. I saw Luminares minions everywhere, whether they were real or not. Every stare or quick glance had shivers running up my spine and me looking for a place to hide or run to. Finally I decided the safest place for me would be in a farming community, so I took to the road at night and walked till I came across the small village of Sandfall. It was a sleepy town, full of hard working men and women just trying to survive and keep their kids safe. I still had plenty of money from the bounty hunter, but I kept that hidden on me and took a job as a worker on a small farm. It was small enough to only employ one keeper, and that was me. I didn’t have to worry about bunking with any nosy extra hands around. I threw away my exquisite clothes once again and donned the garb of a farm hand. It took a while, but finally I could sleep sounds in the small room in the barn, get up each day and do my chores, eat some of the best food I’d had in months. The farmer’s wife was a friendly womand and loved to cook. I couldn’t complain. The Fleeters would come to take their cut of the produce every month, I just stayed out of the way. What could I do anyway, except get myself killed. It was an event they put up with here and it was none of my business. The harvest finally came, I’d been working with them for half a season. The famer wanted to take me to Capistran to sell the crop. I’d never been there, but I knew muscle was good in any town, and I did have muscle. It took two days to drive the horses and wagon to town and another day to sell and unload the goods. By the third night I was tired. The farmer gave me an extra week’s pay and told me to enjoy the town. I felt an ease here, my paranoia was finally gone. I was just a farm hand. The farmer pointed out the local watering hole and I headed off in that direction. Inside was dank and dark. It was barely half full. I found my way to an empty table and waited for service. A bar wench finally decided I might could pay and tip, so she made her way over and I ordered a strong Pikak. MelnKandieRemnant1.jpg

A cold, hard boot hit me in the rib cage, my elbow went to my side and I groaned involuntarily. So, you are awake. It was a female voice! As I blinked my eyes, trying to focus, it became clear, as I lay face down on the floor, my whole front side was cold. I was naked! I was still weak from what, a drug? From being unconscious for…..how long? I felt the boot slip under me and nudge me over on my side, exposing my front. Hmmm, might find some use for you yet! I head the female voice say. I pooled my energy and forced myself back onto my stomach. Blackness.

When I woke again, I felt something laying across my back. This time the room cleared up with blinking. It was empty. Well, it was empty of people. There were crates and boxes of all sorts and all conditions in the room. I felt behind me and pulled the object on my back into view. It was clothing, a full set. Black and brown leather, patched together in places. I sat up and separated out the clothes. MelNKandieRemnant2.jpgI held up the jacket. It was greyish leather, frayed around the edges, patched around the middle with brown leather. Strips of grey leather were used as fasteners instead of buttons, leaving a gap in the middle, which was good since it was too small to pull together. There was a fastener and straps with metal loops on one side, and leather fasteners to fasten up the long sleeves. This was a jacket made for working and had been worked in a lot. The pants had been worked in even more. They were black leather with brown leather patches and straps, canvase patches covering the patches in the middle of the thighs. A brown leather belt obviously held the pants up and a second darker belt with metal studs with pouches and fasteners was included, probably a work belt. MelNKandieRemnant3.jpgThe shirt was brown cloth and if it had been silver I would have sword I’d worn it before. I looked over the clothes again. Hmmm, it looks like DoC has made his way out here to. The feel of the leather was very familiar and the cut of the shirt was unmistakable. Not only did DoC make the best looking clothes, the wore well in a hard work environment. I shuffled on the clothes, figuring out the second belt hung low beneath the main one. They were comfortable and I somehow felt at home again. I stood up and looked around at the stark room. Some of the crates were broken open and half empty. I turned around and looked out the large window. There was a decrepit tramp steamer docked just outside.

I walked over to get a better look and heard a door opening. I turned to find who I supposed the voice I heard belonged to. She was stunning, dark hair, firm body. Her clothing was almost a mirror of mine. I guessed they had been pieced together from remnants of worn outfits. So, you’re finally awake, she said. I didn’t respond. She laughed and put her hands on her hips. Well, you better be say something or I’m going to throw you back to the fishes, she said. Who are you and how did I get here? I asked. You don’t remember? My blank stare was enough of an answer. You better be glad you are here, otherwise you’d be slarp meat by now. The idea of being eaten by the giant fish turned my stomach. You better be glad I thought I could use you to. She continued. I know who you are and I know about that price on your head. She laughed at the shocked look on my face. I got no love for the Luminares and they’d as soon see me dead as you, she said. By this time shock and suprise had to be written all over my face. I stood by the window not knowing whether to attack her or run, whether we were alone here or there were fifty of her men just behind the door. She took a few steps closer and I turned to face her. She threw something at me and I caught it in the air. It was a pair of brown leather gloves. You better put those on, you have a lot of work to do, she said. I don’t know if it was confusion, shock or just plain stupidity, but I put on the gloves. MelRemnant3.jpgCome here, she said, having walked over to an open crate. I walked over and looked in at what appeared to be medical supplies in boxes. She filled her arms with the boxes and looked at me. Well? She said. I filled my arms up and follwed her out the door into the empty hall. Downstairs were even more crates and boxes of all shapes and sizes. We made our way outside to the dock. There was a fenced in freight yard beside the building with large containers either closed or broken open. One container was as bigh as three wagons. She lead me onto the tramp steamer and into the cargo hold. She put the boxes she was carying into a larger container and motioned for me to do the same. I complied and followed her back up the stairs and onto the deck. She had me follow her into the freight yard and opened up one of the containers. MelnKandieRemnant4.jpgIt was filled with boxes. Ok, today you’re going to load all these boxes on the ship. The hold is mostly empty so just put them anywhere down there. At this point I’d had enough of being led around. There wasn’t anybody around but she and I, it was a small island and desolated. I’d been brought here unconscious and put to work? Ok, I’d had enough! I turned to face her. Ok, she said, I’m not going to turn you in, you have a lot of people looking for you and here you’re safe. I need to sell these things to get money, money makes you live you know. Money! I was naked! No clothes means all my money was gone to! Where’s my clothes! I demanded. She stepped back a step, I don’t know, you were naked when I found you. Should I believe her? She wouldn’t have the money on her, if I killed her here I’d never find it. I didn’t even know where I was or which direction to go. And I certainly never sailed a ship before. She looked at me, waiting to see what I was going to do. What could I do. I turned around and grabbed a box and headed to the ship. It took me most of the day to empty the container to the ship. The woman brought out a tray with food for lunch about midday. We ate in silence and I took off my jacket in the hot sun. She had taken hers off somtime earlier. I looked at her shirt. It was made like mine but looked like half of it had been fed to the slarps. She looked good. We ate in silence thens he went back inside and I continued my work. By late afternoon I had finished. I sat down, wiping the sweat from my forehead just as she came out of the building. Lets go, she said. Where are we going, I asked. The ship’s loaded, we have to sell it. It was getting late, but who was I to ask when the market for these items was open. I followed her to the ship. Cast off the lines, she said as she walked the stairs to the bridge. I cast off all the lines and jumped aboard just as the engines were firing up. I made my way up to the bridge to find her behind the wheel. You have the run of the ship, check her out if you like. She’s a good ship. I turned and exited the cabin, walking along the gangway up top. The ship was making way slowly out of the small port. I leaned over the railing. The sun was sinking into the sea on the horizon. Ok, what’s next, I muttered to myself.

DoC has done it again, this time fashioning a set of clothes for the working class post apocolyptic set. These patched, frayed, worn clothes are tough enough to stand up to a day of toiling in the hot outback sun or fashionable enough to take your significant other to a late night dance at the oasis!

DoC’s outfits are no transfer, so gifting should be done through SLExchange where both the men’s and women’s styles sell for $L395.
