New: Hair @ Random

April 24th, 2007 at 01:22pm Ryan Darragh

ryan_hair.jpgI know, I know–more hair.  Listen, if this style had been out at Hair Fair it would have gone home with me immediately and you’d have seen it in that coverage for sure.  Designer Garbage Prototype of Random just released this new men’s hairstyle called “Ryan” (just a coincidence, as far as I know).  This is is a longer, somewhat shaggy style with flexi sections that give it greater realism.  This is also the first dyeable hair I’ve bought, and just so you’ll be able to derive some benefit from my own tragic experience I’ll confess to you that I managed to screw the whole thing up almost immediately.  My first advice to you:  There’s an instructional notecard included–read it!  And follow the instructions carefully.  Before you even start, it’s important to understand that the hair is dyeable one time only via script.  This is clearly stated on the first line of the notecard, in all caps no less, and still I managed not to grasp the concept.  :(

ryan_right.jpgWhat this means, of course, is that you need to decide up front what color you want your dyeable hair to be–forever.   This is a dyeable hairstyle, not infinitely re-dyeable.  With some 60 colors available, this may seem a daunting task, but there’s a “color swatch” notecard available in the shop so you can check out the colors in advance.  The same notecard is also included with the hair, just in case.  The color selection is split about fifty-fifty between more photoreal and more stylized textures.  I ended up settling on Lava Red, one of the more stylized colors, and that is pictured here.

ryan_side.jpgMy only other advice:  Be patient!  You will see a notification message after you select your hair color, while the color change is being made, that this process can take several seconds.  This may vary depending on lag or other factors, but mine took between 30 and 45 seconds to complete, which isn’t that long but seems like a very long time when you’re waiting for something  to happen.

In case you’re wondering, what I did wrong was apparently a combination of not realizing that the hair could be dyed only once and not being patient enough to wait for the process to complete properly.  I tried dyeing it one color, thought it wasn’t working properly, tried another color, and ended up with a mix of the two.  Garbage laughed and said, “Uh-oh.”  Clearly it’s not supposed to happen like that.  So, be patient and wait for the process to complete properly.  If you run into any problems, drop Garbage a notecard with details and she’ll help you out.

ryan_back.jpgBut enough with the technical details already!  As important as they are in this case, it’s really about the hair and how it looks.  The style is full and slightly shaggy, with some feathering on the sides and strands that want to be unruly in the back.  Although in RL the hair falling in front of the ears would drive me crazy, quick fast and in a hurry, I’m always a little jealous of those who can make this look work.  I’m liking it a lot on my SL persona…one more reason for the typist to be envious of the avatar.  ;)

“Ryan” is priced at L$150.  (Don’t read that the wrong way and get wrong ideas in your head.)  If you want more than one color, you need to buy the appropriate number of hairpieces.  Garbage did tell me (while she was graciously replacing the hair I had so thoroughly destroyed) that multi-packs are in the works for those who might want to have several colors available.

Available at Random (Louise 56, 108, 651).

Okay, not sure why being able to dye your hair one time only is a key selling point? Seems like I must be missing something here.

I know when I’ve looked at hair before at different locations, they easily had 60 swatches of colours to choose from, so why not make the decision at that time, perhaps with a demo even, before buying one that you have to dye once, anyway?

(Basically, I know I would screw it up and have to go running to Garbage instantly and often, lol.)

If it could switch between two colours, now that would have definite appeal for me, I should think.

Anyway, excellent style and the textures look great! :)

I wondered that too, and Garbage explained that this is really more of an inventory and shop management effort for her–she can sell one hair item, but you can choose from 60 colors. This allows her to have a much simpler shop display, and one that undoubtedly takes up far fewer prims. Most hair demos I’ve seen don’t represent the actual colors anyway–the available colors and textures are just reference pictures on the vendor. This is a different way of doing it, and I thought it was worth going into some detail because the experience is so different for the buyer. At this price, I wouldn’t expect to get more than one color option anyway, so although the process is different the price is completely fair.

Also, one-time dyeable hair suggests the possibility of giving hair as a gift, and the recipient can choose the color. Of course the hair would have to be transferrable. A shop gift certificate (if available) is another option and obviously allows the recipient to choose the style as well.

I share Wrath opinion. The interest of only-once-modable hair is totally poor, and apparently the process is not hassle free.

I look forward to modable hair for sure! What a bless for the inventory ! but please, not only once!

Too bad, I do love that haircut.

I too love the idea of fully moddable hair, where you can choose new color textures at will. I have limited and not always satisfactory success recoloring hair–I can always buy a blond and tint it more red, but sometimes the hair textures get washed out. And in my experience darker hair can’t really be recolored at all.

I think the real blessing of moddable hair would be that we would only have to adjust once for size, fit and individual strand placement, rather than having to make all those adjustments for each color variation of the style. Sign me up! :D

My apologies if I’ve given the impression that Garbage’s “dye” process is too troublesome to be worth it. I think it’s a very clever idea–I can’t even imagine how much trouble the scripting must have been–and it surely does help with her inventory and shop management. I went into such detail with my own experience in hopes of helping others to avoid making the mistakes I made. And remember, Garbage is just a notecard away!

I’m in love with the red hair texture that Garbage uses so this doesn’t apply to me, but a “fix” that a friend has found around the one-time-only dying issue.

Choose a blonde hair texture to dye it to and then tint that whatever shade you prefer, since blonde is pretty much the equivalent of a blank slate (while still having low and highlights).

I’m very happy for the maker if this system is better for her.
As a consumer, I must be a dummy or something, but I can’t find the interest.

  • 7. Ryan Darragh  |  April 24th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

Ben, I am 1000% certain that you are not a dummy. If this approach to dyeable hair doesn’t appeal to you, that is absolutely a valid perspective. I’m sure that designers want to hear all opinions–that’s how they know what their customers want!

    Garbage is a guy.

I love love love his hair. Not a fan of this one, but his more “emo” styles are the best out there IMO.

I think it was a good idea to make the change of it being dyable once…. you figure…When you shop for hair elsewhere you buy in packs or singles. They dont give you all 47 hair colors for the price of one. So by allowing people to change to ANY color, he was losing money. Now, you buy it and its just like any other place…you get one hair color for your moneys worth..want another color? Buy it again, just like any other place.

I think this script is cool, and seems like a lot less work. Just put it in your hair instead of re-texturing every hair over and over for every new color you want to release.

Hello! Haha Jesseaitui for stating the fact that yes I do, infact have a penis! :D

(some people just get confused becasue I use a female avi sometimes haha)

Oh, the whole story behind the name “Ryan” in case anyone was wondering I was building it in front of Camie Cooper, I asked what her thoughts were on the hairstyle, and she was like “It reminds me of my brothers hair, Ryan” and I was like “Oh ok I’ll name it Ryan then.” just a coincidence that Ryans name is well Ryan!

I was reading the feedback about the hair texture script and well as a response to Wrath, there are demos.. and believe it or not with the demos they also have the fancy script so you can test out any of my hairtextures on my hairstyles even on the demos. The script was created by Johannah and made it simple, I also even included a whole long notecard with all hairstyles even demos to show everyone how the dyeing feature works and also snapshots of all how the hair textures look like on the hair and included that in the notecard as well. It’s not rocket science in brief explantion you just type “/dye blonde” and within 2-3 minutes the hairstyle will be dyed to blonde.

In response to Decadent Rothschild yes I encourage you all to try tinting in these hair textures it can be very fun! If any of you have not purchased Gurl 6 for men hair you should it also is scripted hair which is super fancy you simply click the hairstyle and this dialoque box pops up allowing you to tint it in preset colors and all its pretty neat was going to do that but decided to go with actuall textures.

Another great thing about this script is that when I get around to it if I make a whole new set of hair textures (lets say I make 100 new textures) I can sell “Hair Texture Expansion Sets” which will be a notecard called “Colours” which contain all 100 new hair textures and you will be able to use those on all [Random] hairstyles! All you would have to do is rez a copy of the hair that has not been dyed yet go into contents and then simply delate the Colour cord within that copy and replace it with the hair texture expansion set.. ill go more detail into later when I actually do it.

The only downfall on the scripted hair is that at first the hair is displayed as “No Copy/ No Mod/ No Transfer” but after you dye the hair style then it displays the mods correct which is “Copy / Mod / No Transfer” oh and also it may take a few minutes so please be paitent like Ryan said haha.

Also as said in the post by Ryan I do plan on selling all the hairstyles in different packs so for example just to give you a visual, the box with the display will be on the middle, below will be a demo box, and to the right of the display ad will be 3 more prims which will be the packs. Im still considering the sizes but so far I’ve thought of a Single pack (150L possibly being lowered to 100L) a 5-Pack which includes 5 copies of the hairstyle allowing you to dye the hairstyle to 5 different colors (about 500L possibly 450) and then the 10 pack which would be the same as the 5 pack only with 10 (for about 1,000L possibly 900L) im trying to be fair and give everyone options.

Anywho I also plan to make a youtube video soon explaining all this it may be intimidating at first but I’m sure after you use it once you will be used to it and the second time will be a breeze!

Im typing this and very sleepy so sorry for all the typos. If anyone has any problems what so ever do not hesitate to IM me I don’t bite!

Thank you Ryan for the lovely post

Pretty much every time I see Garbage in SL, it’s as a female avatar, so she’s always “she” to me. ;)

  • 11. Dery Lufbery  |  April 25th, 2007 at 8:53 am

Very interesting way of choosing hair colours and I am sure the future of switchable colours / textures on a single hair isn’t very far from now, although it might be easier to just open up the inventory and replace with another hair. I am very tempted to get myself this hair just to be part of that hair-dyeing experience. :)

Well obviously you have not seen my hair. I give out 56 color tones within one hair. And you can swithch the tone and texture as often you want. And it takes only few seconds.

I understand the issue about earning money there. I rather give out diverse options so you can explore your true self… to toy with the tone and make it match your said outfit.

My price-range is about 120 to 350L per hairdo. And you can pick any bangs to go with it, to have even more options.

    A little advertice, sorry *laughs*

  • 15. Ryan Darragh  |  June 6th, 2007 at 12:21 pm

I recently checked out Cay’s re-colorable hair, at her invitation, and the impressive tinting process works just as advertised. You can look forward to a review here of at least one style in the near future. :)
