New: Couture Designer Clothing for Every Resident

June 7th, 2008 at 09:40am Express Zenovka

See its my rezzday on Monday and I had this great and (at least in my head) funny plan to make a post with this title and end up featuring pic of the default male and Ruth. I was then gonna go through all of male freebie outfits as if they were a normal review and then put together a few of them with other freebies to show they actually weren’t that bad.

But, it wasn’t meant to be. The picture that took 15 seconds in Photoshop to make (that is hidden after the cut) wasn’t so funny anymore. Why? Because the Linden Overlords decided to actually put some designer clothes in everyone’s inventory.
HAHAHA funny.. oh wait

Cardboard Box RobotYes, you read that right. Linden Labs has finally given newbies decent default avatars. No more white shirt and jeans. No more nightclub males, no more cyberpunk goths, or chic city males. And they’re getting rid of ruthing in the new RC builds. I also was having some trouble wearing the old default avatars — various prims accessories seem to be missing from the LL database. I’m wondering if those will disappear soon. Sadly, it seems most of the essential newb moments are becoming things of the past.

But, all is not sad. At least newbs can still rezz boxes on their heads. Speaking of which, I’m writing this post while walking around as the cardboard robot you see to the side. It is by far my favorite of the new default avatars in our libraries, and provided to us by Grendel’s Children. It’s short and looks hilarious shuffling around with the newbie walk. And I just love the crazy eye stare. It’s cute and creepy at the same.

But Flea Bussy isn’t the only one making these new avatars. There’s work from Adam ‘n Eve, Nylon Outfitters, Renegade Clothing, Philotic Energy, and Fairy’s Grove Creations. Skins, prim hair, prim shoes.. they get the works. The only complaint is that LL went back and changed the original shapes for some of them. Can ya guess who made what?

New Default Avatars for Men

I didn’t order the pics very carefully but I’ll start with the last one because it’s the easiest to identify. The Gamer Male elf is by Wraith Unsung of Fairy’s Grove Creations. Surprisingly, most of this outfit is done on the undershirt and underpants layers, possibly because it uses gloves as well. What isn’t just the basic elf shape or those clothes is all prims, including the cloak, gauntlets, hair, and boots.

Before that is the Dragonlet from Grendel’s Children. Like most animal avis, this lil guy is mostly prims. But its fully loaded, coming with a full perms AO (with full perms animations inside) and some cute gestures as well. Remember always that these items are fullperms, which means you can tint and modify them as you see fit.

To the left of that is the Musician male from Renegade Clothing. Kaejo DaSilva also made the outfit above that, called Boy Next Door. The hair for both avatars comes from Aemilia Case of Philotic Energy. Free hair, free shoes, newbies are definitely getting spoiled here.

The avatars in the bottom left corner and top right corner, Gamer Boy and Musician Boy, are from Nylon Pinkney of Nylon Outfitters. I happen to like the latter quite a bit, but both are distinctive and quirky, very different from the SL norm and the older defaults.

Finally we have the Professional Male on the top right and the Clubgoer Male in the spot I didn’t talk about yet. The latter is purely from Adam ‘n Eve while the former contains elements from both AE and Nylon Outfitters. Again, I can’t help but feel that newbie are getting spoiled. The shoes on the clubgoer male could easily be sold alongside the other male shoes at AE, but here they are for free and full perms so that we can tint they to match other outfits.

That said, I’m a little sad to say goodbye to the old defaults. They weren’t spectacular in any way, but you could always spot a newbie from a mile away and chuckle, remembering your time before you upgraded your look. All things considered, if you put on some prim hair, a new skin, and shoes decent shoes you could probably get away with wearing bits and pieces of the old defaults. As bit of a farewell to the old defaults, here’s a few shots that would have made it into my original post.

Also, I’m still bummed the Lindens pulled my rezz day joke out from under my feet. Oh well?

unfortunately, these were database errors. items weren’t available on the asset server end of things.

Wow, if the guys look this good, I can’t wait to see what’s in the girl’s folders the next time I am in-world. Have you seen what the choices are for starting an account through the CSI website? Designers like Lyra Muse, Kin Keiko, Torrid Midnight (I think) and Portia Sin contributed to those AVs, and they look VERY good! Upon my return to SL after leaving for a RL hiatus, I created my account through CSI and still wear a few things that I got from the default avatar.

It will definitely be harder to spot a newbie from a mile away now, but I guess we’ll still be able to spot the ones who have been in SL for 2 years and not bothered to upgrade their appearance from the newbie mullet.
