New: Casual shirts @ Sidewalk

dragon_tribal_full.jpgtribal_dkgrey_polo.jpgRhyph Somme has been doing some interesting and beautiful design work since re-branding and re-working his clothing line as Sidewalk (formerly RS Creations) in January.  For some reason it’s been since around then that we featured any of his streetwise casual designs here.  Shame-faced, I figured I was overdue for a visit.  I’m glad I dropped by, too, as Rhyph has just released some new polo shirts and tank tees with striking graphic designs that deserve some attention.

The polo designs you see here are called Dragon Tribal (above left, below left in detail), Tribal Dark Grey (above right) and Sun Tribal (below center and right).  All three feature subtly colored, ornate graphics on front and back.   The trim at collar and sleeve cuffs picks up the coloring of the artwork and contrasts nicely with the dark fabric of the shirt.  Fold shading on the front and back gives the impression of fluidly wrinkling cloth.  These are provided on the shirt and jacket layers, so you can wear them tucked or untucked.  Priced at L$69 each.

As if that weren’t enough, Rhyph also has for us three new tank tees.  As seen below, left to right, the designs are Mad Love, Tribal and Bio.  These tanks come on the shirt, undershirt and jacket layers for tucked and untucked wear.  The undershirt option gives you additional layering options with other shirts and jackets you may have.  The wrinkle and fold shading is more apparent on these tanks, possibly due to their lighter coloring, and there’s also some pec definintion, which seems not at all out of place on skin-tight shirts like these.  Available for L$69 each.

I like this guy (And the tanks).

His stuff is getting better with each release.

I’ve been on the lookout for both new tanks and polos for a while. These tanks are certainly worth a look, and possibly the Sun Tribal polo.

But what comes to mind with the two darker polos is whether there’s a Mac vs. PC gamma difference coming into play. It’s hard to be sure because we have different monitors, but the design that looks ok on my partner’s Mac is barely visible on my PC.

Obviously there are other factors that come into play, including personal preference. But I wonder if it’s necessary to evaluate some items on different monitors and with different RL room lighting.

Hmm, my partner is Mac and I’m PC. (No Justin Long jokes, please. ;) ) I didn’t notice any particular differences between the two but I can check more closely tonight. Of course there are also tweaks that can be made to monitor settings, separate and apart from differences due to the graphics card or display technology (CRT vs. LCD). And then there are the various settings that can be changed in the SL client itself.

Thanks for raising the concern, Kidd. Honestly, I’m not sure how much we’ll be able to do to address it. I can’t speak for Cat and Aidan, but I pretty much have access only to my own PC at home, a fairly crappy laptop at work, and over-the-shoulder glances at my partner’s MacBook. It’s doubtful that we’ll be able to do much in terms of comparison on different monitors.

The pictures you see here will always make the clothing look as good as we can manage, so the lighting etc. will be as flattering (not necessarily neutral) as we can realistically make it. In the spirit of journalistic integrity (or whatever), I make at most minimal adjustments to the images I use–for instance, I may boost the overall brightness a bit if an image is a little too dark, but I don’t boost color levels. If an image is going to need a lot of manipulation to be usable, I’ll just go take the picture again. After all, I want the items to look good, but I also want you to be able to get an honest look at them. We’ll continue to consider this as we go forward.

I’d be interested to hear if others have run into this at all. Any other experiences with clothing designs, images etc. that look great for others but not for you? Let us know. If it’s a widespread issue, it would definitely be nice to work out some way to address it.

Yes, I’ve heard people complain about images looking like shit on the PC and great on the Mac. I think the solution is simple….MacBook Pros all around!
