Coming Up: Guest Style Consultants

March 2nd, 2009 at 12:08pm Ryan Darragh

It occurred to me a little while back that there might be guys out there who wouldn’t necessarily want to sign up for contributing regularly to this blog, but who might just be interested in kicking in some kind of one-off.  The question was, what form would that take?  Long story short, the concept I settled on is something I’m calling Guest Style Consultant.  I think that not only sounds but looks impressive, especially with the capital letters, and if you say it right you can almost hear them.

Here’s how it works: you have a great look, so you bring yourself to my attention or maybe I spot you somewhere and invade your personal space with an invitation.  Relying on your strong sense of personal style, you put together an outfit, write up a list of the items so others can track them down, and maybe write a few lines on why and how the outfit reflects your own style.  Then we work out a convenient time for a short photo shoot, I take a bunch of pictures and collect the details.  At this point your work is done, so you get to be lazy while I do the grunt work of assembling and publishing the post.  Then you get to brag and show off to your friends.  I do a lot of the work, you get all the glory!  How sweet is that?

If you’re interested in giving this a shot, drop me a notecard inworld with a snapshot or two so I can check out your look.  (You can also e-mail me: ryandarraghsl [at] gmail [dot] com.)  The post featuring my first victim Guest Style Consultant is ready to go, and I have tentative Yeses from a couple of other guys, but we’re having fun getting our schedules to play nice together.  So, I’m hoping this works out and turns into a semi-regular or at least semi-occasional feature.  Sign up now!  You know you want to.

Boring details … My inworld availability is typically between 6pm and 10pm SLT weeknights, Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons.  I’m open to other time windows, but the voice of experience says it will be difficult for us to connect if you have zero availability during my usual windows.  Male avies only, please, but you need not be male on the other side of the keyboard!  The stuff you wear doesn’t have to be new–classics and old favorites are great too.  Any style or genre is fair game.  Please be sure to include at least one or two snapshots in your notecard “application”, as otherwise I won’t be able to make an evaluation.  Snapshots only say so much, though, so I may ask to check out your outfit in person before signing you up.  Civilians/non-professionals/enthusiasts are specifically invited–you don’t have to have your own style blog.  The photo shoot should take no more than 20-30 minutes, but please block out a little more time to allow for sim crashes, connection failures, acts of God, etc.  I will not be responsible for packages lost or damaged during shipping.  If you’ve read this far, give yourself an extra pat on the back from me.

OK, and yeah, making comments works better if my brain keeps up with my fingers…

A great idea Ryan. You may remember you had me almost signed up a few months ago to write a review here (for a skin) but I did say I would be unlikely to be able to contribute regularly and that in fact happened.

I would be interested in this, and will contact you at some point with some ideas.

As a general point, you may actually find you get regular contributors out of this; some people may get the bug for it, and prove to have a talent, and you should snap them up!

Heya Leo! It was in fact your situation as well as other similar ones that got me thinking about how to make blog participation more accessible to others without requiring them to make a substantial time commitment. I gave it a fair bit of thought and I think/hope this approach will open it up to some who have interest but not necessarily the time to be a regular contributor. Although there’s only been the one so far (Kith), that was a good experience for both of us. If nothing else, it’s another way to have some fun. I’ll look forward to hearing from you! :)

Cool, thanks Ryan. I have a ‘look’ which isn’t my usual look but which is kind of eyecatching and unusual – and more importantly, isn’t something I’ve lifted from reviews here (and there are a lot of those :) ) – so I’ll be in touch about that soon. As an added bonus, no one from this blog has ever reviewed the maker of the outfit even though (I think) they’re really cool and they’ve been around a while.

Hmm… you know, i may actually be interested in this. Let me throw some of my favourite outfits together sometime, and see what you think

Just thinking Ryan, you might want to update the “Write for Us” page with this as a second option for someone who wishes to contribute to this blog. Once this post falls off the list, people may not know that they can approach you to submit a look for a one-off review.

Leo – you not only read my mind but motivated me to do more than just think about doing that very thing. :D
