Its back. Yup, for our 20th Blogger Style Throwdown I’m up against Ranger Theas, a friend of my partner Luna Jubilee. Ranger used to blog on her site for a while, but decided to take a break from SL. He recently told us that he’d decided to come back to SL for a bit (supposedly a woman lured him back, but you didn’t hear it from me). To celebrate his return, I invited him to a throwdown that will hopefully get him back into the blogging grind.
Ranger managed to select the “look of the day” theme, which made its first appearance with Nic and Dahlia last winter. This time the theme was taken a bit more literally as “what would you wear out today?” with 2500L to explore our respective styles.

This follow up post is only.. oh.. about two weeks late. Autumn kicked my ass with 34 votes to my 15, so she gets a shiny trophy. She seems bored of it already.

As for next week, there won’t be another throwdown just yet. This so-called “real life” thing has been keeping me busy and will continue to do so till the end of the month. As a result, the next throwdown will be up on June 12th, so check back then.

There have been music-based throwdowns in the past, but there’s always something special about rock stars. Whether it be for their music skills, on stage presence, or armies of fans, rock stars have “made it big.”
Here to explore the world of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll with me this week is Autumn Hykova, owner of the hair store Tiny Bird. Autumn doesn’t seem to use her personal blog, Second Living on the Edge, any more but has nonetheless managed to stay in the blogosphere. A clear master the art of cameo blogging, Autumn put a lot of work into the Victorian Bushfire Appeal, has been modeling over at Of Deer & Dogs, and is the Bonus Jewnas. She even managed to cameo on Men’s Second Style.

Well, after being neck and neck all week long Niko managed to pull ahead for a 32 to 31 vote victory. I guess he’s the real 外人 with style.

Next week I’m switching gears from Harajuku to rocker, since Autumn Hykova and I have 2500L each to rock your socks off. Autumn hasn’t posted on her personal blog, Second Living on the Edge, for a while, but for good reason. She’s been busy, taking a huge part in the Victorian Bushfire Appeal and more recently opening a new hair store, Tiny Bird. She hasn’t quite disappeared from the blogosphere, though, poppin up over at Of Deer & Dogs and as Bonus Jewnas with the Jewnas Bros. Seein as she’s hanging with the Jewnases, rocking out should be a piece of cake, eh?

Finally, a break in the stream of accessory-based throwdowns. Instead, some Harajuku goodness for y’all. That’s right, that Japanese neighboorhood in Tokyo which is basically home to Japanese street fashion.
The theme was chosen by none other than the mix master Niko Lyle, who blogs over at A Shout and A Whisper. A DJ and a fashion blogger, I actually was listening to his latest mixtape while putting this post together. Give it a listen, its good.

Sometimes RL smacks you in the face, shaking you up while yelling, “Pay attention to me!” That’s why you didn’t get any throwdown results yesterday. However, the voting did close yesterday and Raul beat me handily — 49 votes to my 25. I guess I’ll be writing about the loss in my Cry Cry diary.

Next week I’m against blogger and DJ Niko Lyle, from A Shout and a Whisper. Niko uses his blog to document playlists from his various sets and has recently released a couple of mixtapes. He also likes to features various favorite outfits he’s constructed, which is why I know he’ll have no trouble dressing up Harajuku-style for under 3000L next week.

Will the stream of accessory-based throwdowns ever end? This week the accessory of choice is a book. Picked by none other than photographer and builder Raul Crimson. Chronicling his slife over at A Crimson World, he doesn’t often cover fashion on his own blog. Maybe its because every time I’ve seen him he’s been the epitome of style, and if had to cover all of his great outfits we’d never get to see any other content. Lets’s see how he’ll fare in the Throwdown. (more…)

Who says experience doesn’t matter? Over two years of machinima experience definitely shone through as Hawks pulled ahead for a total of 34 votes over my 20. Luckily though, a crash course through machinima was not all in vain because I ended up needing some of those skills for RL work this week.

Next up I’m up against Raul Crimson, of A Crimson World. While Raul occasionally dabbles in machinima, he also is a photographer and builder. He doesn’t cover fashion persay on his blog, but he definitely has quite a bit of style. He’s managed to keep up the streak of accessory-based throwdowns, happening to select a book as the accessory to feature. So we’ve got 3000L to make our respctive tomes look good.

Another one of those accessory-based throwdowns, this one is about umbrellas. The concept is an ancient one: if the sun is too hot or the rain is too wet, use something to block the undesirable element from affecting you directly.
So who chose this topic? That’d be HawksRock Gunawan. While he may not be a photographer or fashion blogger, the man does have a long resume. After finally killing off Are We Not Men?, Hawks teamed up with former mean girls JellyBean Madison and Rosie Shark to start The SL Revolution. He’s also a dj for Clockwork in Topgol and even more importantly for us, the man’s a machinimaniac. That’s right, cuz of Hawks this post has not one but two embedded videos featuring umbrellas for you to watch alongside the usual throwdown fare. (more…)

Well, ya win some and ya lose some. Definitely seems to be the case with the throwdowns. Venturino thoroughly laid some smackdown, beating my 23 votes with his 79.

Hopefully, though, that won’t be the case again next week when I’m against Hawksrock Gunawan. Formerly writing for the male-oriented blog Are We Not Men?, Hawks has since teamed up with former mean girls JellyBean Madison and Rosie Shark to bring forth The SL Revolution. He’s also managed to get himself into a throwdown, with 2500L on the line to make an umbrella look good.

That’s right, the last type of throwdown. Featuring knives or daggers, so less. Who chose that theme? Venturino Benson of My Second Life on the D-list. Venturino’s one of the few guys who still cover male freebies, so definitely keep an eye out for the goodies he covers. Venturino’s also the man behind V-Poses, a fun store full of singles and couples poses. Now that introductions have been made, lets get on with this knifing business. (more…)

I guess y’all liked The Grapes of Wrath more than you liked Scarface. I beat Prad, 42 to 7. Let’s just hope somebody doesn’t put out a hit on me.

I hope so, cuz I want to make it till next week when I’m up against Venturino Benson of the freebie blog My Second Life on the D-list. Venturino managed to pick the last type of throwdown, so next week is going to be the first “item-based” throwdown. You might be be scratching your head wondering what I mean by that. “Item-based” throwdowns require the outfits to be based a certain type of item, usually an accessory. Venturino picked “knife/dagger,” so both of us have 3000L to pick up a knife and make it look good.

You’re wondering if you read that right, huh? That’s right, period wear. One of those things on the spinning wheel that no one has landed on — yet. My opponent this week, Prad Prathivi, picked out 1930s period wear.
I’m not sure that Prad needs an introduction. Blogger, artist, dj, businessman… it’s tough to find a hat Prad can’t put on his head. He’s even been named one of SL’s hottest male avatars of 2008. With 2500L to find himself 1930s period wear, now is his chance to add fashionisto to his hat stand. (more…)

Seems y’all like Stokely’s souvenirs better than mine. Maybe I should have gotten some for you instead of showing mine off. I’ll have to remember that for next time. This time though, Stokeley beat me, 46 to 27.

Next week I’m up against SL Renaissance man Prad Prathivi. Honestly, I’m not sure if there’s something in Second Life that Prad hasn’t tried his hand at. Between blogging at Metaversally Speaking, DJing at Crown and Pearl, and building for Amodica, he seems to be able to do just about everything. So I decided to put a throwdown on his plate as well. Prad had the good fortune of selecting a type of throwdown we’ve never had before — period wear. So blame Prad that we now have 2500L to explore fashion from the 1930s.

Everyone who has ever travelled to another country knows that feeling. The feeling of being the outsider, the one who doesn’t blend it, that everyone knows is totally outta place. And most of us know that when some tourist shows up in your home town, you feel the exact same way about them. Some try their best to blend in, others don’t care that you laugh at them.
In Second Life, due to the sheer number of people and sims, its inevitable that someday you’ll end up somewhere where you just don’t fit. Stokely Mayfair, who blogs over at From Stokely’s Closet, and I both tried our hands at being stylish tourists for under 3000L.

The streak of losses is broken! Finally. Everyday the votes were climbing back ‘n forth, resulting in a record shattering 203 total votes. Wow, just wow. Votes were pouring in for both me and James until the last second, with the finally tally at 117 for me and 86 for James. After the dust settled and I gave James his trophy, he proved to us all that its not the size that matters but how you use it.

Next week I’m up against Stokely Mayfair, of From Stokely’s Closest. Stokely’s a bit new on the blogging scene, but he’s got a distinctive look and style that makes for a refeshing read. On top of that he posts more often than I do. Stokely managed to choose “tourist” as his theme, so come back next week when we show of our souvenirs.

Back in the 50s, a “rave” was a crazy bohemian party in London full of Soho beatniks. A “raver,” then was a mod party animal. It took another 30 years before the term “rave” began being applied to dance parties with electronic music and light shows. Starting with the European Acid House scene, the rave trend spread around the word, carrying with it techno, PLUR, and a lot of pretty colors.
Now what can I say about James Schwarz that y’all already would know? The man is an artist, whose works grace flickr and will be displayed inworld at the KMADD Gallery very soon. He also is a blogger and writer, having submitted to various in world publications. And, if NWN’s list of top ten hottest avatars of 2008 is any sort of indicator, he seems like quite the catch — though unfortunately for the ladies it seems he was recently claimed. Now in the spirit of all things PLUR and glowstick, James and I each have 3000L to be the best ravers we can be.

Well, seems there’s a reason he’s the Editor in Chief here. Despite a rocky start, Ryan served and delivered, beating me 29 to 21. Which means I’ll be payin’ for his drinks at the next office party.

Next week I’m up against the multi-talented artist, writer, and blogger extraordinaire James Schwarz. Between his artwork and writing duties for various inworld publications, it’s no wonder that posts on his personal blog are so infrequent and rare. Hopefully, participating in the next throwdown should give him a little more to post up there. You got 3000L to be the best raver you can be, James — it’s on like Donkey Kong.

Before I talk about Jazz, y’all might be wondering what a busker is. Buskers are street performers.
Now, about Jazz. There’s no easy way to define what Jazz is but that’s what makes this a fun theme for the throwdown. From swing to bebop to jazz fusion *shudders*, there’s no easy way to define jazz. And there definitely is no easy way to peg someone as a jazz peformer. That’s why Ryan Darragh, our resident editor in chief, and I decided to each put down 3500L to start our own jazz ensemble.

Looks like Diva and I will have to make up for ditching school for a Snow Day. Its not too bad, though, since the teachers who watch over detention always nap in the teacher’s lounge instead actually paying attention to us. That’ll leave us up to our own devices.

But, Nic and Dahlia totally beat us this time, with 52 votes to our paltry 8 votes. Couldn’t beat the fun of tobogganing and cuteness of tiny fawns. Yup, I blame Bambi for this loss. I hope he gets his fair share of their winning cookies.
Next week is the first throwdown of the new year. I decided to go for an in-house battle this time. Yep, that’s right.. I’m going up against our very own editor in chief, Ryan Darragh. He had the luck of falling on a theme that I came up with while putting together another throwdown ages ago. So, come back next week when Ryan and I each have 3500L to make ourselves jazz buskers.

That’s right, the throwdown is back! As I told you last week, we’ve got twice as many people this time around for a tag team throwdown. I’m up against Nicolas Sinatra and Dahlia Eilde of the couples fashion blog, Bonnie & Clyde. Both are experienced models, currently employed by Nex-Core Model Management. On top of that, Bonnie & Clyde is one of the first couples fashion blogs for Second Life, so they have plenty of experience working together. I’ll be teaming up with my lovely wifey, TheDiva Rockin, Chief of the SL Fashion Police, and hoping we can keep pace with em.
Our theme is “Snow day.” Why’s that? Because a good portion of the Northern Hemisphere has experienced snow in the past few weeks. Basically, its too cold for me go outside. Luckily, SL lets us play in the snow without the cold, the wet, the mushy, and the soggy.
It’s a win-win for everyone.

So y’all might be wondering what happened to the throwdown. Basically, my last opponent had a lot of RL issues come up halfway through the round and I’ve had RL and SL issues so we called it off for a bit. I had been planning to introduce something new, so that’s coming to you now.
The process of choosing a theme is basically spinning a big wheel. I use two random numbers. One of them acts as a bit of salt, choosing where the wheel starts spinning from. The other, usually much larger, is the equivalent of actually spinning the wheel. I get the numbers in different ways — sometimes I use a website and other times I just ask my opponent to pick a number.
I’m thinking of using yet another wheel. Up till now I’ve used a somewhat vague theme, that both my opponent and I can interpret as we see fit. But more and more, those outfits and feeling like costumes and not actually something most folks could wear on a day to day basis. To remedy the situation, I just need to have more types of themes — another wheel. (more…)

Votes are in and Winter came out on top with with 93 votes to my 71. While we were neck and neck at the first, Winter managed to pull away after an inspired campaign at Armidi. Granted, the man does look good in a pink miniskirt. After getting his trophy, it looks like Winter decided to cover himself up in sunscreen and take to the waves at night — if any of the surfer chickas wake up in the morning feeling anemic you’ll know who to blame.
As for next week, there won’t be any throwdown. Yep, you read that right, no throwdown. I had one all lined up with a complicated new theme and all that but due to RL complications my opponent had to back out. So I guess I’ll save my explanation and the theme for next Friday.

Supposedly, the sport of surfing has Polynesian roots — where chiefs of certain tribes were the members of the tribe who were best at riding the waves on wooden boards. In Hawaii, surfing was a art that was tied into religion. What we know as surfing today only came about in the last 100 years, spread from Hawaii by Olympian and actor Duke Kahanamoku. Surfing is considered a sport by some and a lifestyle by others, with some surfers devoting a large part of their life to “finding the perfect wave” and furthering sport for those around them. Even Second Life has a large and thriving surf community, with organizations such as the SLSA and others documented on Surf Watch.
Unfortunately, being an outdoor sport, surfing is a little rough for vampires. In Cold Blood blogger Winter Jefferson stepped up to the task and even de-fanged himself to hit the beach and catch a few waves.

Wow.. that was a close one. Neck and neck all week but I managed to finally pull ahead at the end for 75 votes vs. Achariya’s 68. Phew! That said, we managed to hit a new record for votes — 143 total! Which, quite frankly, is awesome. I’m thinking of making certain end of the year awards, though I’m afraid people will be conservative and worry about votes instead of focusing on exploring a style and just having fun. Weigh in via comments, I like feedback on the process.
As for next week, Mr. Winter Jefferson is stepping up to bat. The self-proclaimed “sardonic Australian fashionisto Vampire knight” writes for two blogs, doing promo work for Rezzable and then covering his own style at In Cold Blood. Unfortunately for Winter, he managed to pick one of the worst themes for a vampire — surfing. I’m not quite sure how he’ll manage to surf out in the sun, but luckily there are plenty of spots in SL to surf at night too and he’s got 3000L to spend on SPF12315465 sunscreen. So expect both of us to be on the waves in one last summer-style throwdown before I succumb to the cold and admit the seasons are changing.

The term rockabilly is a portmanteau of rock and hillbilly. The former is short for rock ‘n roll and the latter is a semi-derogatory reference to country music. As one of the earliest styles of rock ‘n roll, rockabilly music reveals a lot of about rock ‘n rolls origins developing out of blues, r&b, country, and gospel music. There’s always been a few styles associated with the movement — the gaudy stage clothes of stage performers, the clean cut pastel suits as those performers started to perform on television, and of course the “retro” style of the bad boys and pinup girls from the 50s. Because back then rock ‘n roll was just starting to be accepted by the masses as acceptable for the youth of the country. Here to reminisce with me is Achariya Maktoum of achariya.net. I don’t think I can classify her to a single style, since every time I go to her page I see a new one — she seems to have em all covered. Either way, that just makes this throwdown more challenging and fun.

Sorry for being a few days late on these results, I was out of town last Friday and spent what part of the weekend that I was here trying to find Catero. You see, Catero’s a good friend of mine and when I didn’t see him online all weekend I got worried about him.

Seems my worry was justified. His partner wasn’t too happy when he lost the last style throwdown and decided to have a bit of “Alice in Wonderland fun” with him too. Poor guy. I may have finally pulled away with 42 votes vs. Cat’s 36, but it was a tough fought battle and there were plenty of times I was worries he would beat me. That’s probably because Catero’s the friend who helped me develop and refine the Blogger Style Throwdown format. Without Catero’s help, the throwdown’s would never have been the way they are today. On top of that, he’s always been there to help me out when I needed some advice to give an outfit a lil more punch. So send the man some aloe vera this week if you can. (more…)

In July of 1862, the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat up the River Thames with three little girls, the daughters of Henry George Liddell, the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and Dean of Christ Church as well as headmaster of Westminster School. During the ride, Dodgson apparently told the Liddell sisters a tale about a bored little girl named Alice.
Three years later, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by “Lewis Carroll” with illustrations by John Tenniel was published. Even the Queen of England loved the tale, and the tale has never been out of print since. While the tale has always been enjoyed by adults and children, the tale has always been a bit.. well.. creepy.
Alice’s journey “down the rabbit hole” has much in common with a nightmare. Isn’t that perfect for Halloween?
