Blogger Style Throwdown: Afterhours Businessman under 2500L (vs. Oscar Page)

While Law was busy handing out favors and bribes for votes these past two weeks, I’ve been busy with yet another throwdown. This time I’m up against Oscar Page, a relative new guy on the block when it comes to blogging but who has been fashionable in SL for ages (2004, that is). (more…)

New: Mallory Shirts @ Casa Del Shai

WavesDay.jpgOK, let’s just pretend that I’ve written and you’ve read a couple of paragraphs of playful banter about my being on holiday and the sun and sand on the beach. I’m too eager to cut to the chase: Look at the way the light plays on the bunched cloth! No one can do this like Shai Delacroix. (As usual, click the picture to see the full-size image.)

Other designers’ clothes have well-drawn, even artistic, wrinkles; only Casa del Shai’s clothes have laugh lines. (more…)

Freebies at Alphamale

In addition to the freebie pack on the table display (leather jacket, jeans, tee), you’ll also find a couple of L$1 items this week at Alphamale.  Look for the Faded Jeans in Gray and the Alphamale Belt in Brown.

Designer Review: Primitive Design

PD_Zipper.jpgPrimitive Design is one of those stores I’ve been familiar with for quite some time, and had on my list of places to review for nearly just as long. For some reason I’ve never gotten to it however, I should blame my lack of time in the past. A few days ago the creator Geyer Schnyder gave me a full tour of the store however after a mention of Ryan - and now here I am, finally writing the review I’ve been meaning to do for ages.

The store makes items of a grungy urban/street style. They sell pretty much everything you need for a full avatar, including skins since a few days ago. The skins are only available in two white skintones however, so I can’t review them. Luckily I’ll already have my hands full enough with the clothes and accessories.

I have put two full outfits together with the store’s items, and will show those in the review. There’s so much more for sale though that you should definitely check the place out. My goal here is to give you an idea of the designer’s work in general, so I’ll try to keep it as short as I can by not spending more than a paragraph on each individual item. (more…)

Noir gentleman @ DE Designs

1846_vest_shirt.jpgSo, I picked up this period suit a little while back, with a certain larger, themed article in mind.  For a variety of reasons, that didn’t quite work out–it happens, unfortunately.  Ever since, it’s been sitting in my inventory, waiting patiently, reminding me every so often that it’s still there, still beautiful, eager to be worn.  Absent the larger article’s context, I couldn’t decide how to present it.  Finally, last night, it came together in my head…with, as the song says, a little help from a friend.

DoC Eldritch’s “1846 (Blackened)” suit has a fantastic Old American West feel–I can easily see Al Swearengen wearing it just to intimidate Cy Tolliver or impress Mr. Wu, unlikely though he might be to achieve success in either endeavor.  It represents true, lovingly maintained gentleman’s finery of an era when true finery might be found but rarely, and then it was quite likely to be ill cared-for and shabby.  Not so here. New: “Dysis” @ RFyre

dysis_full.jpgI wonder what it’s like inside the mind of Raven Pennyfeather? I imagine a vast, dimly lit chamber draped in heavy, dark velvet, with plush carpets underfoot. Great paned windows look out into the starry, starry night like inquisitive eyes. Scattered about are immense wooden chairs, elaborately carved and with deep upholstery, perfect for pausing to reflect on one of the many ideas that flit about quickly, glittering in the dark.

Or maybe this is just Raven’s design studio. It certainly seems that only such a place could possibly be origin to her outrageously elaborate gothic haute couture clothing designs. Her new ensemble for men is called “Dysis,” perhaps named after the Greek goddess of the hour of the sun’s setting. This would seem appropriate, perhaps on more levels than that most immediately obvious. (more…)

Lurking Bondage Pants @ Schadenfreude

goth_sleeveless.jpgUsually I try to cover new stuff, this time I’m reviewing something a little older though. Not old as in “take out the featherduster and remove the cob-webs“, but definitely not new anymore by SL standards. I saw this gothic outfit at Schadenfreude, and felt like I absolutely had to cover it. Consider it a part of me going back to my roots. After all, when I joined Men’s Second Style, I told Ryan I wanted to bring some alternative styles into the spotlight. When I look at my previous reviews however, many of them are preppy and mainstream casual instead.

The exact outfit I’m reviewing this time is called lurking bondage pants, after the style of the pants it comes with. For the record, these pants have little to no connection with the BDSM/bondage scene, and are in real life mostly a part of musical subcultures such as goth and punk.

The top is ripped open on the chest with safety pins holding the tear together. The pants come with zippers on several locations and bolts on the calves and waist. Black straps connect these bolts. Stylised flames adorn the textures of both top and pants. There are 8 versions of the outfit, with the difference in the colour of the flames. I am reviewing the black version.

Casual elegance for summer:

Common Thread by meriwell Faddoul

threads_button_tee_green.jpgIf you’ve been searching for the perfect casual wardrobe for summer, you may need look no further than Common Thread by meriwell Faddoul.  I didn’t know what to expect when I made my first visit to meriwell’s shop, but the clean designs and gelato-bar color palette brought back memories of Don Johnson in “Miami Vice.”  In the best possible way, of course!

I’ll start with simple and classic.  The Threads Button Tee (L$100) has a button-up front, collar and chest logo, so for my money it’s more polo than tee.  I’m not going to quibble, though.  It’s available in a handful of colors, and shown here in Green and White.  Here and throughout I’m also wearing meriwell’s Light Linen Trousers (L$100).  The fabric has a delicate crosshatch texture, and meriwell mentioned that he left off the side seam because he preferred the softer, casual feel that provided.  Three styles are included: belted, unbelted, and tapered at the ankle for wear with sculpted cuffs. Review: Styria by VincentTalent Maximus

black_city_sepulture_full.jpgAt some of his club gigs lately, my friend Kaj has been wearing some intriguing and unfamiliar jeans and shirts–detailed design work, rich colors skewing to the dark side, goth influences but nothing heavy-handed.  He was kind enough to put me in touch with the designer, VincentTalent Maximus, whose work was new to me.  Vince’s “2di4″ collection so far isn’t extensive, but it’s well executed, beautifully artistic and growing.  We were able to beat our schedules into submission and make time for an inworld chat, so in addition to my usual blather you’ll be hearing from Vincent himself regarding his design work.

“Right now I’m experimenting with a few things,” Vince says.  “I’m really into goth influences (not hard core), spend lots of time listening to dark ambient music, things like the Legendary Pink Dots.  [I] love Tim Burton and the lighter side of dark.  Vampires are great, but they should be sexy!”  I find myself in agreement with the sexy vampires idea.  After all, they’re not just Max Schreck. Blazers/suits @ Z#road

drkblue.jpgIt was Ryan who last mentioned Yukimaru Koba’s Z#road shop, back in January. He was reviewing some skins. I found myself in the shop for the first time this week and it was the blazers that impressed me. I think the best of the lot is the dark blue blazer with matching trousers. It’s one of the sharpest suits I own now. The fabric is so soft and comfortable. Some suits in SL are all perfect creases and smooth, straight lines, and some SL suits have wrinkles that have become permanent creases. The Z#road blazers and trousers are marvelously in the middle. There are some sharp creases in the right places, and no creases in the wrong places, but other than that, this almost liquid feel — it ripples rather than wrinkles. And I love it.

The red jacket is pale, almost salmon, and clearly on the ’strong’ side of the border with pastel. The trousers that come with it are called white, but in fact they are more eggshell off-white. The debonair cheerfulness of this bright outfit (more…)

New: Sexy threads for sexy cats @ Miau Haus

seiki_kazuho_full.jpgA little while back, Posy was lamenting that she hadn’t done any new design work for Miau Haus in what she thought was far too long.  The next thing I knew she was asking, “Are these shirts sexy enough?”  Well, now, let me just take a look.

Yes…yes, I think they might be.  Break out your favorite skin with a treasure trail, because you’re going to need it.

Posy’s new “Seiki” shirts are devilishly disheveled and come in bright White and deep Black.  With each you get a jacket-layer shirt (untucked only, natch), prim collars with and without flexi nectkie, and scrunched, turned-up sculptie sleeves.  The shirt’s fabric weave is clear and easy to make out, even on the Black shirt, and finishing details include heavy rather than fine stitchwork and color-matched buttons. Jetcity Shop

Jetcity OutfitI’ve been a bit lazy about getting some freebies to you because freebies tend to come in batches. When you get one, you get twenty other stores doing something at the same time. They don’t really mean to be giving freebies out when everyone else does — it just happens around events like RL holidays or SL events like SL5B. It just so happens to be a bit of downtime between these freebie rushes, so I’m recovering from the burnout of mad freebie hunting by sifting on my butt and being lazy.

That said, I still have some good stuff to send to send your way. One of my latest finds is an awesome little shop called Jetcity. Everything in the store, by owner Jiru Jetcity, is free (as in free beer :P). There isn’t much, but what is there is rather refreshingly different. Most of the stuff here looks better on skinny, lighter framed guys instead of the typical over muscled SL male. (more…)

Attitude to spare: New stuff @ Aitui

tokyo_intake_charcoal.jpgLast time I saw Jesseaitui Petion, he was busy getting his new menswear designs set out, arranged to his satisfaction, and properly priced so he could re-open Aitui to the public.  Pretty much every time I’ve seen or talked with him, he’s been pretty mellow, but that night he was a man on a mission.  He said that he’d probably be pulling an all-nighter, and I thought, Wow, I thought we gave all that up when we finished college.  I guess some things don’t change.  He re-opened a few days ago now, so you may have already discovered his new collection, but I wanted to share a few of my favorite items with you here.

I don’t know if Jesse considers his Tokyo Intake Jacket (L$235) the centerpiece of his new collection, but to me it epitomizes the attitude and vibe of his new designs.  The jacket is cut high rather than low on the hip, and it can be worn with or without the untucked printed tee (the tee is not on a separate clothing layer and can’t be worn on its own).  Although I’m wearing one of Jesse’s scarves here–more on that in a moment–the jacket has a sculpted turned-up collar, which Jesse has thoughtfully provided pre-set for two different attachment points (chest and spine).  Several different fabric finishes are available; Charcoal is shown here.  I love love love this jacket and I’m already plotting what other cool tees I can wear with it. Dusting off the Old Inventory for Summer

Neko Gear Beach WearSo summer is in full swing for me. That means humidity and frequent thunder storms. But back home, on the other coast, summer means sun, beaches, and kicking back to relax and take care of things you forgot over the last few months. So I brushed the dust off my inventory and took a look at what freebies have been sitting there unused and untouched.

First off is a bit of beach wear from Neko Gear. This stuff is at least a good month old, gathering dust in my inventory as I’ve got way too much swim wear. Some of this stuff was covered by Adaire and Gecko over at free*style about a month ago. I’m wearing the beach towel freebie over my shoulder (you can lay it down too), along with a beach shirt, board shorts, and flip flops. I tend to avoid wearing logo branded freebies just because I don’t like being a walking advertisement, but the ones here aren’t that bad or overly flashy. They all kinda just fit together. Out of the box, the flips are a tad small but all of this stuff is modifiable and thus can be resized to fit rather easily. (more…)

Taking it easy @ Sc Design

steve_grey_billy_grey.jpgAlthough I certainly have my steampunk, goth and grunge leanings, contemporary casual menswear is still a staple in my wardrobe.  Designer Scherina Montgomery is doing some fairly impressive design work in this arena.  These items, recently released at Sc Design, are today’s case in point.  For me, one of the fun things about designs like this is that they’re often non-specific enough, stylistically speaking, to mix it up successfully with other, more obviously “genre” gear.  Today I’ve thrown together a kind of bad-boy emo-neko grunge-kitty look that I think kind of works.  Come on, it’s fun, try it!  You know you want to.  ;)

steve_shirt_grey.jpgScherina’s “Steve” shirts have the look and lines of a classic polo, and I know what you’re thinking–everybody’s got polos, they’re a dime a dozen.  Look closely, though, and you’ll see that the front buttons run full length, not just two or three at the collar.  The pattern of horizontal stripes is an eye-grabber, and eight different color combos are available.  I was apparently feeling the monochromatic thing and ultimately restricted myself to shades of grey, but you can also choose from some brighter colors.  These shirts are priced at L$99 for singles, which includes tucked and untucked versions on various clothing layers.  Two different packs of shirts in four color combos are also available for L$299 each.  The “Billy” shorts (available in Grey and Blue Washed) are just L$59 each.  Note the “accidentally” undone top button. [insert cool name]. Whoa.

[insert cool name] & naimaMy friend Itny told me to head to a store called [insert cool name] a while ago, but (as is usual) I forgot. She reminded again a few days ago, and this time I went right after she told me. I found a nice box of goodies there for 1L. Curious to see if I could find more, I checked through the group history and found a few more things. As I was busy poking around, I ran into Malte Antfarm, the owner of the store. Malte is a pretty nice guy, and we ended up talking for a bit. As I was talking to him, the topic of his next freebie came up.

I mentioned that guys tend to get plenty of shirts, but everything else is much less common. Therefore, why not make his next freebie a pair of pants? Sure enough, a day or two later, Malte dropped the shirt and pants I’m wearing here on the group. I’m pretty sure he mentioned that they’d be packaged in the box as well for when they age out of the archives. Anyway, enough back story, on to the clothes. (more…)

Hot town, summer in the city: SHIKI by Shinichi Mathy

bouquet_shirt_blue_denim.jpgDesigner Shinichi Mathy described himself to me as “a newcomer to the SL fahion scene.”  He may have arrived relatively recently, but I hope he sticks around for a while.  His shop SHIKI presents a generous collection of unabashedly colorful, breezy casual designs for men, and a handful of items for women.  I’m pretty sure the shop was redesigned within the last few days–it had a completely different layout when I made a quick last-minute visit last night.  Things do come and go so quickly around here.

Although I’m not featuring them here today, you’ll also find a few decidedly informal suits…perhaps just the thing for a summer garden party or evening cocktail cruise.  The pieces I’m wearing here are just a small selection from Shinichi’s Spring and Summer ‘08 collections. (more…)

Dressing as an Alphamale

Alphamale OutfitLast Sunday, rather early in the morning, I saw a notice for new freebies from Alphamale. The first thought that crossed my mind was, “Finally, took Yelmer long enough … the girls had some freebie lingerie months ago!” I had been waiting a while for this and I was quite excited. Normally, when I get notices from large groups about an item, I tend to wait an hour because fighting for a spot on a full sim isn’t worth it — you can just wait a bit and there will be no one around landing on your head, etc. But after waiting about 30 seconds, I thought “Screw the others, I want that freebie” and teleported in. Luckily for me, not a lot of people are on Sunday mornings and the sim wasn’t too too crowded.

After chatting it up with Yelmer a bit (for the record, Yelmer and Mariska are very nice people — if you see them at the store y’all should say hello) I head home and tried on the new clothes. The wait was definitely worth it. (more…)

Box of Freebies at MadHouse 88

Madhouse 88 OutfitI honestly hadn’t heard of this store before I got a landmark by way of the Free*Style group notices a few weeks ago. I finally head in to the store and I must say I’m glad I did. First of all, the store is really cool. The build is excellent quality, and its just a nice place to look at. On top of that, there are cool-looking clothes that aren’t same stuff you find everyone else wearing. Who doesn’t like being special like that? On top of that, and more important for this post, the owner has been quite generous and has a box full of cool clothes so we can try out his stuff.

The hat, shirt, pants, and gloves are all from MadHouse 88. Lets start from the top. The hat is a close-fitting Jeep Cap and comes in three different colors: gray, green, and red. Its easiest to wear with no hair underneath, so a skin with hair drawn on would probably come in really handy. If you don’t have one, it covers enough of your head most people wouldn’t give it a second thought. Its relatively easy to resize so long as the top of your head is generally circular. (more…)
