Winter formals [iv] : High Society by SF Design

hamilton_tux_black_gold_coat.jpgI did something new and unusual this year.  I took vacation over the Christmas and New Year holidays.  Two weeks off from work, to be precise.  I had no travel plans, as my immediately family members all live fairly close to one another, but I wanted to try out a less busy and stressful holiday season, to see what that was like.  I had all these plans for fun and productive things I was going to do, and some of these were actually accomplished.  But mostly I, um, sat around and was pretty mellow.

As fallout, I suppose, of all this calm and relaxation, the holidays seemed for me perhaps not to pass more slowly but somehow to last longer, if that makes sense.  Here it is, January 8, and I’m still feeling festive.  Hey, we’ve only just passed Twelfth Night!  In fact, our tree is still up.

I’m also still (so far) going strong with winter formalwear, although I might be just about ready to wrap this series up.  Today’s installment features new creations by swaffette Firefly, longtime SL resident and designer, currently available at her new über classy formalwear boutique, High Society. Winter formals [iii] : Alphamale

casual_tux_festive.jpgIs there such a thing as casual formalwear?  Some would call the very idea an oxymoron, an impossibility.  Yelmer Pfeffer clearly believes the answer is Yes, and he makes a compelling case in some of his winter design offerings. (more…)

Winter formals [ii] : Schadenfreude

revenant_suit_festive.jpgIn my previous “Winter formals” post I featured some contemporary but classic men’s formal-dress items by edo Tone. You may still be searching for the perfect suit to wear, though, if the formal winter festivities you’ll be attending are a little less conventional, a little more…gothly. If that’s the case, I dare say you may need look no further than the Revenant Suit by Allegory Malaprop. Although sloe-eyed Frosty here seems indifferent to its charms, not to mention my own, I can assure you that it’s a remarkable piece of sartorial engineering indeed. It has, in fact, already prompted unsolicited compliments (the best kind) from unexpected quarters. You really must take a closer look. (more…)

Winter formals [i] : Styles of edo

winter_formal_styles_of_edo.jpg

So, I had this crazy idea that I would do a series of posts featuring formal wear for the holidays. This thing called Christmas kinda got in my way, but I’m kicking it off anyway.  I’ve got a few things already lined up; we’ll see how far I get. Consider these recommendations for winter parties in general, holiday or otherwise. Hey, New Year’s Eve is still coming! (more…)

Blogger Style Throw–nevermind…

So y’all might be wondering what happened to the throwdown. Basically, my last opponent had a lot of RL issues come up halfway through the round and I’ve had RL and SL issues so we called it off for a bit. I had been planning to introduce something new, so that’s coming to you now.

The process of choosing a theme is basically spinning a big wheel. I use two random numbers. One of them acts as a bit of salt, choosing where the wheel starts spinning from. The other, usually much larger, is the equivalent of actually spinning the wheel. I get the numbers in different ways — sometimes I use a website and other times I just ask my opponent to pick a number.

I’m thinking of using yet another wheel. Up till now I’ve used a somewhat vague theme, that both my opponent and I can interpret as we see fit. But more and more, those outfits and feeling like costumes and not actually something most folks could wear on a day to day basis. To remedy the situation, I just need to have more types of themes — another wheel. (more…)

ARGRACE : Fall/Winter collection

argrace_mood.jpgThe ARGRACE Fall/Winter collection by AIR Winx is, in a word, impressive.  A good double handful of the designs have been burning a hole in my inventory for several days now–I’m long overdue sharing them with you.  Although I love and enjoy exploring some of the incredible variety of themed clothing you can find in SL, there’s still a place in my heart (and room in my wardrobe) for contemporary designs.  A beautiful sweater, a handsome jacket, an eye-catching accessory: these all make me happy.  If they do the same for you, I’d be surprised if you don’t find something here worth taking home. More stuffs with skulls, just because I can

In which Ryan indulges yet again his skull motif fetish.  He has yet to admit that he has a problem, but clearly he needs help.  Is there a support group?  Quick, somebody call an intervention!

skullie_rockerboy.jpgSometimes I’m just not able to restrain myself.  Honestly, sometimes it isn’t even my fault, not really.  There I am, minding my own business, just shopping, sometimes just browsing, and something with skulls on it just leaps from the vendor and lands in my inventory.  I don’t even remember clicking Buy.  It’s like it just happens.  Well, if I’m going crazy, I figure you may as well come along with me.

As its name suggests, the Skull Romance Polo (L$70) by Drusus Ducasse is something of a two-for-one special.  The two-tone grey/white shirt is decorated not just with skulls but with hearts as well.  Rather than suggesting Young Cadavers In Love, the artwork here is bold and friendly, almost cartoony, with wide-eyed white skulls-and-crossbones (notice the absence of threatening teeth) and pink Valentine’s Day paper-cutout hearts.  The polo comes on the shirt and jacket layers, so you can wear it tucked or untucked (although there’s no underwear-layer extension for tucking into low-rise jeans).  The Union 82 Basic Torn Jeans (L$98) by Theodore Ducasse are pretty much barely hanging together, due to copious rips and tears.  I also noticed the same exact worn spot that my jeans in RL get from the corner of my wallet, right at the bottom of the back pocket.  Polo and jeans are available at Zanzo (Splintered Rock 224, 172, 714). Blogger Style Throwdown: Surfer under 3000L (vs. Winter Jefferson)

Supposedly, the sport of surfing has Polynesian roots — where chiefs of certain tribes were the members of the tribe who were best at riding the waves on wooden boards. In Hawaii, surfing was a art that was tied into religion. What we know as surfing today only came about in the last 100 years, spread from Hawaii by Olympian and actor Duke Kahanamoku. Surfing is considered a sport by some and a lifestyle by others, with some surfers devoting a large part of their life to “finding the perfect wave” and furthering sport for those around them. Even Second Life has a large and thriving surf community, with organizations such as the SLSA and others documented on Surf Watch.

Unfortunately, being an outdoor sport, surfing is a little rough for vampires. In Cold Blood blogger Winter Jefferson stepped up to the task and even de-fanged himself to hit the beach and catch a few waves.

Three’s Company: Shacking up with Devon, Epo & Aleri*

jonas_outfit_seated.jpgSometimes I’m just not sure what approach to take when I’m putting together an outfit or outfits for an article. I mean, putting outfits together obviously follows a certain basic process that doesn’t change much–clothing that makes for a certain look, shoes that play along nicely or even make a statement, maybe some jewelry or other accessories that tie it all together.  And there’s always the question of hair, and possibly a particular or even themed skin…but I digress.

So, anyway, yes, the process is pretty well defined, but for me the question is always, “What’s the hook?” By which I mean, What makes it special? Where’s the fun? What’s the challenge this time? What’s in it for me? (more…)

Blogger Style Throwdown: Rockabilly under 2500L (vs. Achariya Maktoum)

The term rockabilly is a portmanteau of rock and hillbilly. The former is short for rock ‘n roll and the latter is a semi-derogatory reference to country music. As one of the earliest styles of rock ‘n roll, rockabilly music reveals a lot of about rock ‘n rolls origins developing out of blues, r&b, country, and gospel music. There’s always been a few styles associated with the movement — the gaudy stage clothes of stage performers, the clean cut pastel suits as those performers started to perform on television, and of course the “retro” style of the bad boys and pinup girls from the 50s. Because back then rock ‘n roll was just starting to be accepted by the masses as acceptable for the youth of the country. Here to reminisce with me is Achariya Maktoum of achariya.net. I don’t think I can classify her to a single style, since every time I go to her page I see a new one — she seems to have em all covered. Either way, that just makes this throwdown more challenging and fun.

New: Boy Next Door @ MUWU

boy_next_door_brown.jpgYou’ve seen them everywhere you’ve ever lived.  Judy Garland immortalized them in 1944’s Meet Me in St. Louis.  Maybe, like Judy, you’ve wanted to make the acquaintance of one, or maybe you’ve wanted to be one.  In SL, all things are possible.  Namida Akami’s new “Boy Next Door” is a beautifully textured casual ensemble that can be worn in several different ways, so you’re not limited to a single “look.”  I’m a big fan of flexibility, and I appreciate it when designers create clothing that can be worn in ways that approximate RL clothing.  Don’t get me wrong–I don’t think that SL is all about recreating RL experiences in a virtual setting, although you can certainly do that and have fun.  Some of my favorite clothing and accessory items are designs that would be completely impossible in RL, or possible but completely unaffordable.  But there’s plenty of room in the world for realistic casual wear that’s also realistically flexible, and as I said, I’m a big fan.  :) (more…)

Halloween 2008 [v] : Giver of the Dark Gift

blood_fountain.jpgHe saw her at dusk, standing at the Blood Fountain.  He had only just arisen for the night, and she must have known that, must have been waiting.  She was brave, or reckless, perhaps thoughtless, certainly foolish–but, however mildly curious he might be, in the end he knew it was of no importance.  She was there; that was all that mattered.  She could not possibly have made herself more an offering, no matter if she had tried for an eternity.  She was beautiful, which was pleasing if unnecessary, and she was daringly attired, which was unsurprising.  Her bared neck and shoulders amused him, her prayerful stance struck him as forceful if unoriginal, but her rosary necklace pushed him almost to the brink of laughter.  It was not that the Christian cross had no power–no, not at all.  But it was after all only a symbol, and meant little in the absence of belief, however limited.  And he did not sense from her anything like belief.  From her he sensed only anticipation, expectation…resignation?  Was it?  With most it would have been, but not with her.  Interesting.

He knew she was his when she deigned to notice his presence. (more…)

New: Entropy @ Silent Sparrow

FirstPhoto.jpgHello; my name is Mr. Oh and I’m a Sparroholic. But I have to show you this suit, even though Ryan has just written about Thorns and in his article mentioned how addicted I am.

Entropy is the latest triumph in hyasynth Tiramisu’s efforts to bring beautifully textured full-length suits to the men and women of Second Life. (As usual, please click the photos for more detail.)

amberDetail1.jpgThe piece you’ll notice first is the jacket. It’s floor-length, with a flexi-prim that flows nicely when you walk or turn or dance. There are also prim attachment sleeve-cuffs. What makes the jacket so desirable, though, is the way the light is reflected and absorbed by luxurious cloth with its wonderful and intricate patterning. (more…)

Halloween 2008 [iii] : I’m not wearing a costume,

a.k.a. Skully Slacker

skully_slacker_sit.jpgYou know the type.  You see them hanging around at family holiday parties, off to the side.  This one’s just like all the rest–he’s your typical goth/emo/slacker boy, or whatever they’re into now.  God only knows.  He looks like he might be one of your wife’s cousin’s kids.  And what’s with the attitude?  This one’s sullen, broody, moody, like he’s disappointed by the world.  You can’t get a word out of him, so don’t bother trying.  You’d think his lips really were sewn shut or something.  Don’t expect him to step up for karaoke, much less put on an actual costume.  At least he made his face up, give him credit for that.  But it’s a little too scary, really.  That kid is seriously weird.  I mean, what’s wrong with a cheap plastic mask?  And would it kill him to bob for apples with the little kids?  At least it would make his mother happy.

The thing is, he’s both more and less ”dressed up” than he realizes.  He thinks he’s so special, but really they’re all more alike than different.  He and his friends try to rebel, and the result is that you can’t tell one “rebellious” gothboy from another.  Trying not to be posers, they end up posing like crazy.  We were nothing like that when I was his age.

Kids these days…who can understand them? (more…)

Men’s Corner: Getting Wet

tropical_bloom_golden_daze.jpgSummer may be over where you are–it is where I live, at least technically–but it’s always summer somewhere in SL.  Even if the days are no longer warm outside your RL window, you can still catch a wave or work on your tan in SL.  Here are just a few ideas to get you rolling.

Whether it’s at the beach, poolside, or just running through the backyard sprinklers, getting wet is a summer tradition. To make a proper appearance at any aquatic event or gathering, it’s essential to be properly outfitted. And I’m not just talking about swimwear, either, although that’s a very good start. No, you’re going to need more than a pair of trunks. You’re also going to need accessories, equipment, and maybe some toys. What boy, of any age, doesn’t love his toys?

Blogger Style Throwdown: “Dystopian Masquerade Ball” under 3000L (vs. Iustinian Tomsen)

So one of the things that Throwdown winners get to do is come up with ideas for other throwdowns. Domch Raymaker had a great theme for me: “aristocracy”. Unfortunately for him, he told me this while changing from his old outfit into a pink Darth Vader suit, and SL didn’t play nice. The end result in my head was even more fun: “dystopian masquerade ball.” Honestly, I had no clue where to start with this one, but I think that helped level the playing field against my opponent Iustinian Tomsen. Model, magazine writer, contributor to many blogs and owner of SLStyle, Iustinian is one of the classiest dressing males on the grid. With a budget of 3000L, I’m sure he and I will both have interesting interpretations of the theme. (more…)

New: Unseelie @ RFyre

Un01.jpgSecond-man.com regulars need no introduction to the work of Raven Pennyfeather. RFyre outfits are always richly detailed, deeply coloured, and usually full of options and amazing prim features. The latest outfit, Unseelie, is clearly and unmistakeably in that tradition.

Terribly romantic rather than pure gothic, Unseelie consists of tight leather trousers, a rough white cable-knit shirt, either a jacket with prim belt and bottom, complementary collar and shoulder-guards (with a greenish tinge); or a waistcoat, which which the prim belt and bottom also work. If you wear the jacket, prim “sleeves” join the gloves in a great design. If you wear the waistcoat, the woolen shirt has some bunched sleeve cuffs with lace extentions. The shirt also comes with a loose and gauzy collar. Socks are also included, but not boots. (more…)

(Somewhat) new: Brody Outfit @ WoE

WoE_001.jpgRyan forwarded me the review pack from WoE since we both agreed it’s more my style. Pretty much appreciated also. However, I was supposed to write this review when the item was still really new. My Second Life PC died but by now I managed to get things running very crudely on a old laptop. I’m on a pre-Windlight viewer, so the picture lighting is a bit crude sometimes (it’s easier than blaming my horrible photography skills). The outfit I’ll be reviewing is the Brody outfit. It’s for sale at 200 L$.

WoE sells urban clothes for both men and women. If you like baggy pants and graphic shirts it’s a good place to visit on your search for clothes. Did I mention they’re fairly priced as well? Enough about the store, on to the meat of the review.

The outfit contains a pair of baggy pants, two belts, a graphic t shirt and a longsleeve to wear underneath. The shirt uses the jacket layer, the longsleeve is available on undershirt and shirt layer. The prim parts are no-mod but come with a resize script. The clothing parts are no-mod as well, which means you can’t retouch the pants shape.

spyder_clopped_scarf.jpgHey, you there! Yes, you. I know what you’re thinking, but it’s not true. Well, I suppose you’d have that same silly grin if I had titled this post “She Bop.”

spyder_tee_beige.jpgI love exploring sims that showcase builds and other creative work by Japanese designers. Whether it’s clothing at Back and Forth, jewelry and accessories by Yukirei Greene, hair at Zero Style, or skins, hair and clothing at Z#road Men’s Shop, the design work often reflects the influences of both historical and contemporary Japanese culture as well as anime, manga and other forms of art. There’s a unique sensibility and a distinct “feel” to much of the design work by members of the Japanese community in SL. I find it appealing, refreshing, and just…fun. (more…)

Blogger Style Throwdown: Emo under 2000L (vs. Creamy Cooljoke)

Late again due to RL interference, but still just as good as ever :P Back in the mid-80s, some hardcore punks started doing these “emotional” stage performances. As the 90s came around, they mellowed out into a more indie style. But singing emotionally and wearing geek chic wasn’t enough. Some band needed to dress in black and wear eye shadow to convey the depth of their emotion. Legions of rebellious suburban kids followed suit, the “emo” style that we all know was born. Here to explore and enjoy the fad is Creamy Cooljoke, queen of the freebies at Free*style. (more…)

Designer: JHZ Store for Men

JHZ_01.jpgI’m back again, this time with a review of JHZ. JHZ is a small store that advertises as selling High Definition clothes for men. The style is somewhat urban with baggy, worn jeans and tight T shirts.

Some of the shirts they sell are branded with first life brand logos. I won’t cover these by blog policy. I’ll cover the jeans, some original t shirts and some layered tees though. The store also makes some accessories, of which I’m showing the bracelets in my review.

I’ll start with the jeans. The texture is quite ‘crispy’ and sharp. The only blurry area I saw on the jeans was around the crotch, but that was completely the fault of the SL mesh. I’m sure we’ve all seen how SL distorts baggy or loose clothing. Since the pants are modify enabled I fixed it for myself by lowering the crotch height from 33 to 15. (more…)

Blogger Style Throwdown: Cowboy under 2500L (vs. Domch Raymaker)

Most folks tend to associate cowboys with “gunslingers” cuz of Western movies. I’d think that between the cattle drives, working around the ranch, and just tending to cattle a cowboy ends up pretty damn busy. In fact, that may be why Domch Raymaker of SLMen fame couldn’t make it to the throwdown on Friday. But, here he is on Sunday with an awesome entry. (more…)

Review: Kari by Menno Ophelia

hoodie_rebel_jeans.jpgI was so impressed with the beautiful Emvee Cuba build by Menno Ophelia that I did “location photography” there for not just one but two of my recent posts–and I still haven’t exhausted all of its possibilities.  It seemed something of an interesting coincidence, then, when I heard about Menno’s new clothing and accessories shop, Kari.  It took me a few days (I got sidetracked by Hair Fair, so shoot me), but on my first visit to Menno’s shop I found myself grinning more often than not as I perused the eclectic selection.

roborock_tee_rebel_jeans.jpg“Kari has been in creation for over a year,” says Menno.  “My style is not the easiest to describe, but basically it is unisex clothes, sculpted shoes, accessories,  posed props and whatever I feel like making.  My influence comes from personal things I wear, like to wear and see on the streets [of Amsterdam] on a daily basis.”  I can only speak for myself, but I admire designers who follow their bliss, so to speak, simply creating things that appeal to them.  I honestly believe that, when a designer is excited, passionate and having fun, that shows through in their work.

“If you build it, they will come”?  Yeah, it’s a cliché, I know.  But still.  :D

Plaid Jacket & Variles @ Mechanism

PlaidJacketExperiment.jpg

The collar is a prim of course. Somehow, despite the very tricky plaid pattern, Kobe Flatley has managed to blend the join seamlessly (except some facelights will cause a shadow). With that cut-out, it looks like a jacket lapels that have been turned up and securely buttoned up. I honestly don’t see how anyone can live without at least one of these. (more…)
