Men’s Corner: RFL in style

rfl_2007.jpg
Chances are that you’ve at least heard of Relay For Life, the annual overnight fundraising walk benefiting the American Cancer Society. The event is designed to further awareness of cancer prevention, treatments and cures; to remember those who have been lost to cancer and celebrate survivors; and to raise money for ongoing cure research. The Second Life embodiment of this effort is Relay For Life of Second Life. In 2007, through the efforts of 40 teams RFL of SL raised a grand total of over L$118,000! (more…)

Men’s Corner: The Great Outdoors

safari_outfit.jpg

The last few days, I’ve been hoping on and off (more on than off) that the “unseasonably warm” temperatures in my RL home city (Los Angeles) will return quickly to milder and more usual weather. Please, God, let the meteorologists be meaningfully right, just for once. I know it will be 110 Fahrenheit degrees plus in September, but right now it is quite frankly too damn early in the season for this nonsense. (more…)

Men’s Corner: Best Of

I was in a barren and empty sim, the hour was late and it was dark (I had forced midnight) when a mysterious message urgently demanded my attention. “Your mission, should you choose to accept it: for the next issue of Second Style, highlight some of the best individual designs in SL fashion of the last twelve months. This IM will self-destruct in ten seconds. Nine. Eight….”

I logged out quickly, but not before triggering a sly smile ( }:-> ). I knew that this assignment would challenge me like no other, and I would have to rely on all my skills and training. How to select just a handful of items from the many released over the past year? It seemed…impossible. ;)

Hopefully my superiors will agree that I have succeeded. All of these creations epitomize the best of what SL design has to offer. In chronological order by month of release: (more…)

Men’s Corner: International Style

In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, this issue of Second Style is focusing on international style. It seemed appropriate to see what’s out there along those same lines for the male of the species. Hey, I’m all in favor of solidarity with our fashionista sisters!

qui_kimono_full.jpgThe kimono (the Japanese characters literally mean “something worn”) is the national costume of Japan. Over time, the word “kimono” has come to represent a particular type of traditional full-length garment: T-shaped, straight-lined robes that fall to the ankle, with collars and wide, full-length sleeves. Kimonos are wrapped around the body, always with the left side over the right (except when dressing the dead for burial) and secured by a wide belt called an obi, which is usually tied at the back. Today, men wear kimonos most often at weddings, tea ceremonies, and other very special or very formal occasions. The Qui Kimono by Zen Deledda (L$400) features flexi robe sleeves, a prim obi, and an elaborate dragon design embroidered in gold and red on the deep black robe. Because of the way the prim robe sleeves attach, some poses do cause the flexi robe sections to hang less naturally, so you may find that some poses in your AO work better thanothers. Permission are Modify / Copy / No Transfer. Available at House of Zen (Hinode Shima 195, 98, 25).

Men’s Corner: Isn’t It Romantic?

charlatan_coat_white_full.jpgWhenever I heard the word “romantic” I am immediately reminded of a scene in the movie “Moonstruck.” You know the scene—where Raymond Capomaggi, still madly in love with his wife Rita after many years together and apparently all but undone by the lovers’ moon that seems to be influencing everyone in sight, sings aloud a snippet of Rogers and Hart’s “Isn’t It Romantic?” Apparently, he was a tiger last night. ;)

One thing we can take away from this delightful moment is that romance is not the exclusive province of the young and beautiful—anyone can be romantic. Maybe this is a bit of a stretch, but I think this also suggests that dressing romantically doesn’t just mean lipstick-kissed boxer briefs (not that there’s anything wrong with that)—it can be anything that represents an effort to connect to your significant other and make something special happen for both of you. Men’s Corner: Skins and hair

antonio_pale.jpgIn Second Life we have the opportunity to express ourselves, via our avatars, in ways that may not be easily accessible to us or even possible in real life.  Designer clothing may be daily wear for us in SL, while in real life it’s a luxury that may or may not be possible for us.  Changing our skins and hair, though, is a different story—neither quick nor easy in real life, but a matter of a few simple clicks in SL.  This issue’s theme is “The Body,” and in this column I want to share with you designs by a few of my favorite skin and hair designers–some new, some old favorites, some you might not have heard of, but I think all are doing great work.

One of my favorite skins in every aspect is “Antonio,” by Funk Schnook.  When checking out a skin, I find that I always look first at the face, and I love the way Antonio’s feature detailing (including all the facial hair choices, which are very well done) works on my avatar.  Two levels of muscle definition are available, and I remember Funk being a little surprised that he felt the skin worked well on my slim shape, as he had designed it with more “built” shapes in mind.  Here you see the less-defined in the Pale skin tone, with the Stubble with Soul Patch facial hair option.  L$1850 for a single skin, or L$4500 for a four-pack; demos available in the store.  Available in four tintable skin tones and a variety of facial hair and makeup options at FNKY! (FNKY Cake 136, 69, 24). (more…)

Men’s Corner: Winter Wear

So what if, as the song says, the weather outside is frightful?  I’m such a whore for sweaters and coats as it is, I barely need winter as an excuse.  This month you get to benefit from my hedonistic accumulation of cold-weather wardrobe items, as I’m sharing some of my favorites, both old and new.

peacoat_blue.jpgFirst up, an old favorite of mine.  These Pea Coats by Donmai Frederick, released last winter, have classic lines and a beautiful wool fabric texture.  The set includes coats in six colors:  Beige, Black, Blue (as shown here), Brown, Gray and Green.  A simple undershirt also adds shape and bulk to the coat, so you look like you’re layering properly for the cold weather, just like your mother told you.  As if that weren’t enough, you also get four flexi scarves, plain and striped, in short and longer lengths.  Undershirt and scarves are tintable, so you can customize to your heart’s content.  Also available in a set styled for women.  Pick these up for L$300 for the set at Back and Forth (Metabirds 192, 71, 25). Men’s Corner: Gentleman’s wear

englishman_suit_closed_blue_tie.jpgWhen I was growing up, my mother always told me that there’s a difference between being a man and being a gentleman.  As with so many things my mother told me, I’ve learned over time that this is true.  I think it’s safe to say that this rule applies equally in Second Life.  What makes one a gentleman?  The term is usually associated today with a certain propriety and courtesy in one’s conduct, but historically also had connotations of belonging to a good family and perhaps even having the right connections.  While I can’t help you with your manners or breeding, I can suggest some clothing and accessories without which no gentleman should venture into polite society.  Feel free to take these necessarily specific recommendations and implement them more generally in your own gentlemanly pursuits.

Men’s Corner: Halloween 2007 Roundup

halloween2006.jpgI had a great time decorating for Halloween last year.  I think one of the appeals of Second Life is the opportunity to do things that can’t be done reasonably or maybe even at all in Real Life.  In addition to going a little crazy with the house and yard decorations, I also had, um, several different costumes for myself.  You may not feel the need to go quite that far, but surely you’ll need at least one.  Here are some ideas I’m playing with for this year, some new and some that have been around for a while.  I only wore one of these last year, though, so I’m not just recycling things that are already sitting in my inventory!  I’ve tried to include a mix of clothing costumes and avatars, although some costumes can be so elaborate that the line between often seems blurred.  These are just some personal favorites of mine, and we’re by no means done for the season–you’ll undoubtedly see at least a few more seasonally themed items in the next few weeks.  :D (more…)
