He hated the term. He hated it, but no matter what he did, no matter who he tried to be, he could not escape it. He had been trapped by it from the very beginning, from his very incept date, for the phrase had been prominently featured in his homeostatic promotional material—in shining, swirling letters, in multiple languages, and repeated in subliminal whispers that could barely be heard, yet made their way deep into the mind and all but guaranteed a purchase, if not actual satisfaction. In fact, if he had come with an interactive instruction manual—which he had not—the phrase would no doubt have been emblazoned across every virtual page.

“Clothes make the man.” So said American writer and humorist Samuel Langhorne Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain. Given what I do here, you’d think I’d be inclined to be in complete agreement. But I’ve got news for you—it takes a lot more than clothes to make a man. Skin, shape, hair, eyes, accessories and (yes) clothing all work together to make your avatar what you want it to be. He has different moods. Mostly he’s friendly and playful, but sometimes he’s territorial and defensive. Once in a blue moon, usually after he’s watched “X-Men” yet again, he’s bold and aggressive. Belial was one of the four crown princes of the Underworld—or was it seven?  He could never keep track—and his pride knew no bounds.  He was especially proud of his own appearance, metaphysical though it might be.  He was constantly tweaking and re-working his more fluid aspects, looking for he knew not what, at least not quite, but he was confident he would know it when he found it.  This fascination set him distinctly at odds with all the rest of the legions of Hell, who rarely if ever made changes to their settled appearance.  Even the Morning Star, Lucifer himself, seemed to have grown tired and jaded.  It had easily been a thousand years since he had last been seeing wearing the shining, supernaturally beautiful face that had made him so famous in Heaven, before the Fall.  And that, Belial was pretty sure, had been for a Samhain party or some other costume thing Persephone had put on. Ryan:  The first thing I noticed about Dimitri is that all of his prim accessories–clothing components, hair, jewelry, glasses–were perfectly fitted.  It’s not that I’m constantly going around and checking out how guys have fitted their prims…well, actually I guess I do in fact do that.  Hey, it’s part of the job!  But almost any guy will let one thing or another slide just a bit, or decide not to lose any sleep over that one last strand of hair.  Not Dimitri.  I’m pretty uptight about fitting hair myself, so I feel his angst.

Dimitri:  Well, I must admit, I was a little nervous when I sent in the application for the guest style consultant.  I have been interested in doing something like this for quite some time and when I saw [Ryan's] post on the web site, I jumped at the opportunity.  I have been in SL about five months now, but ever since the first month I have really been into men’s fashion.  I create my outfits with the intention of being noticed and standing out in a crowd.  I am more of a casual guy when it comes to clothes, but I don’t limit myself to that type of style.  I also love to dabble in other types. Supposedly, the sport of surfing has Polynesian roots — where chiefs of certain tribes were the members of the tribe who were best at riding the waves on wooden boards. In Hawaii, surfing was a art that was tied into religion. What we know as surfing today only came about in the last 100 years, spread from Hawaii by Olympian and actor Duke Kahanamoku. Surfing is considered a sport by some and a lifestyle by others, with some surfers devoting a large part of their life to “finding the perfect wave” and furthering sport for those around them. Even Second Life has a large and thriving surf community, with organizations such as the SLSA and others documented on Surf Watch.

Unfortunately, being an outdoor sport, surfing is a little rough for vampires. In Cold Blood blogger Winter Jefferson stepped up to the task and even de-fanged himself to hit the beach and catch a few waves.
