Blogger Style Throwdown: Rockabilly under 2500L (vs. Achariya Maktoum)

The term rockabilly is a portmanteau of rock and hillbilly. The former is short for rock ‘n roll and the latter is a semi-derogatory reference to country music. As one of the earliest styles of rock ‘n roll, rockabilly music reveals a lot of about rock ‘n rolls origins developing out of blues, r&b, country, and gospel music. There’s always been a few styles associated with the movement — the gaudy stage clothes of stage performers, the clean cut pastel suits as those performers started to perform on television, and of course the “retro” style of the bad boys and pinup girls from the 50s. Because back then rock ‘n roll was just starting to be accepted by the masses as acceptable for the youth of the country. Here to reminisce with me is Achariya Maktoum of achariya.net. I don’t think I can classify her to a single style, since every time I go to her page I see a new one — she seems to have em all covered. Either way, that just makes this throwdown more challenging and fun.

Blogger Style Throwdown: Emo under 2000L (vs. Creamy Cooljoke)

Late again due to RL interference, but still just as good as ever :P Back in the mid-80s, some hardcore punks started doing these “emotional” stage performances. As the 90s came around, they mellowed out into a more indie style. But singing emotionally and wearing geek chic wasn’t enough. Some band needed to dress in black and wear eye shadow to convey the depth of their emotion. Legions of rebellious suburban kids followed suit, the “emo” style that we all know was born. Here to explore and enjoy the fad is Creamy Cooljoke, queen of the freebies at Free*style. (more…)

Review: Body art by Negko Devinna

humaga_tana.jpgI don’t wear a lot of tattoos in SL. I have none at all in RL, although I have been contemplating one on and off for a while now. But tattoos are yet another area where it’s fun, rewarding, even enlightening to express yourself in SL, even though I might not indulge at all (or yet) in RL. Not just any ink will do. It has to be the right artwork, the right style, the right outer expression of something inner–these make all the difference.

Negko Devinna’s tattoo designs came to my attention by way of a reader recommendation. (Thanks, Viola!) I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I arrived at Negko’s shop–although Viola had mentioned Negko’s blog, I, um, hadn’t actually checked it out yet. :/ As a result, everything was new to me as I stepped into the Great Unknown…which was perhaps a good thing. Brought to You Courtesy of Lucky Chair

Black Maria meets F.A.T.So, when I made that horribly long post a week or two back I said I’d hoped I hadn’t forgotten anything. I did. But don’t worry, forgetting made this post a lot better. I probably wasted just about all my luck on lucky chairs, but I managed to grab three E’s from two chairs in a span of 24 hours while I was at two stores.

So what I forgot was the Camo Tank from F.A.T. Designz that I picked up a few weeks ago. I only remembered the tank when I received a reminder that F.A.T. Designz was celebrating its first birthday with a weekend-long party. The part I find coolest is that the designer, Alfred Kabuki, has pushed his designs back into real life as well. Which means you can tell the real world what you do to the dj’s wife just like in SL. On top of having relatively reasonable prices (most products from my glance last weekend in the 80 to 110L range) the store also has a lucky chair and camper chairs for extra free stuff. Both switch between various products. I happened to see an “E” on the chair and received the RAW I pants when I checked to see if the tank was still out. (more…)

Review: Kalico Kreations by Kenny Sleeper

welcome_sign.jpg“They say the city of Kalico was once an industrial hub, where most people in the country congregated, worked, and lived.  I, personally, find that extremely damn hard to believe anyone came to this city because they wanted to.  They came because they had to.  They came because everything was here.  Everywhere else had nothing!  Nothing at all!  It’s like someone decided to slap every technological, social, and business aspect of living into one giant concrete hell.  We don’t know much about what life was like before ‘it’ happened, but we definitely know what ‘it’ is.  Everyone does.  It’s the stuff of stories that parents would tell their little kittens so that they would sleep at night.  But ‘it’ definitely happened, and ‘it’ destroyed everything.”  –  So begins the roleplay info notecard for Kenny Sleeper’s new-and-in-progress “Kalico City.”  I was familiar with some of Kenny’s emo/neko/punk designs from his shop Kalico Kreations, and Aidan featured some of his designs in a previous post, but his new venture sounded intriguing (although I find I don’t have enough time to devote the amount that serious RP calls for).  When he mentioned that he had also been creating some new designs so players can trick themselves out in style, it was clear that a visit to Kalico City was called for.  Who knew what grungy, post-apocalyptic wonders would await? St. Patty’s Day Freebies

waking up green and confused... ah.. St. Patrick's Day So supposedly the pope says St. Patrick’s Day was the 15th, because of Holy Week. The Dropkick Murphys say its the 17th cuz of their show. So I figured I’d play it safe — wear green and get wasted from the 15th to 17th. Now, sitting on my ass unsure how to get up, I decided to try and remember how I ended up here. I’m wearing the Fleur newbie skin in Buff, available for 1L at GNUbie or for free if you’re under 30 days old. The shirt and pants, which I haven’t changed in three days, are from Stellar Designs, and available as part of the March group gift. The shoes… well shoe.. I don’t know where the other went.. is from Free Dove. I tinted the (surprisingly) modifiable Anjo’s adorables blue camo shoes so that they were green. Socks are from Arai, available in the store as a pack called daily socks. The hair though.. I don’t know what happened. I could have sworn I had Platinum hair when I started drinking Saturday (ETD’s Sleek, $1L) but I guess I decided to tint it at some point. I picked up the hat off a leprechaun at the House of Nyla.. or at least I thought it was a leprechaun.. except they were big, and on a sign. And the tattoos.. well.. those weren’t there Saturday either either.. but I vaguely remember dropping by etchd.. I wonder if lasering off whatever else is on me is gonna be a freebie too…

Note to self: Next year lay off the green booze… (more…)

Designer Review: Slinked Tattoos by Edward Palace

aztec_half_sleeves.jpgThe tattoos I wear tend to be rather discreet and on the small side, but there’s some really beautiful work being done by a variety of artists in larger sleeve, vest, and full-body styles.  I’m a big fan of Zabitan Assia’s “Henkei” tattoo series, and Truth Hawks has some beautiful designs in his store as well.  Edward Palace and his shop Slinked Tattoos were new to me, though, so when he recently invited me to check out his tattoo designs, I put a visit to his shop on my schedule.  I think it was well worth my time, and I hope you agree.

The “Aztec Half Sleeves” tattoo (L$200) shown here is drawn in deep black, with a repeating motif of round designs reminiscent of depictions of the Aztec calendar.  The detailed sleeves connect smoothly to the chest/back yoke, which rises high enough at the neck to form a collar. (more…)

New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: June 24 - 30, 2007

Due to a massive power outage in my building I was unable to access the internet. After going through the five stages of grieving (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance) I decided not to stare at my blank computer screen and went out to enjoy the Canada Day atmosphere and celebrations across the city. Canadians and Americans, please enjoy your festivities.

And now on to fashion. As always, if you have your ear to the ground and stumble across a really great designer please send me an IM. Please note that for the month of July I’m taking a break from this weekly column.

casadelshai_snapshot_006.jpgCasa Del Shai. A follow up to the suave elegance of last week’s Barong Tagalogs with a westernized twist in the Amorsolo and Luna suits. The traditional Filipino shirts have been paired with a suit jacket that has been embroidered/screen printed on the back panel and a crisp pair of matching slacks. The ensemble sells @ 600L and can be purchased in Deco (112, 150, 30).

sale_indie_snapshot_001.jpgSale @ Indie. Don’t forget to check out Indie Rainbow’s stores in Louise and Sede di Marte before July 5th and take advantage of the liquidation sale on his hand drawn goodies for men and women. Once the sale is over his current collection will be retired.

vrdesigns_snapshot_006.jpgVR Phlux. Another addition to the swing collection. “Harris” is a sharp tweed suit with shirt and tie, vest with pocket watch detail layer, jacket layer and belted “Hollywood” slacks. The suit sells for 300L at phlux (169, 163, 35).

Woo. This week had been … well … different. With the dawn of sculpted prim (”sculptie”) capability, many designers have wasted no time in incorporating this new feature into their products. The results are impressive.

There were actually quite a few new articles I wanted to include in this week’s round-up, however, there was just so much stuff that I couldn’t humanly cram it all in. That being said, I’ll quickly give those who don’t regularly check the forums or other style blogs the heads up that:

  • Garbage Prototype of [Random] has created some jeans as well as a set of vest-and-tee combos (fyi, he’s really feeling Lily Allen at the moment).
  • Jesseaitui Petion of Aitui Tattoo & Piercing/Renown has rolled out a slew of non-full body tattoos for both sexes at Aitui. He’s also put out flexi neck bandanas and v-necked longsleeves called “Three4th” in 4 colours. And lastly, he’s beefed up his Advance skins which now boasts over 70 skins in 3 light to dark skintones with various facial hair options.
  • Lost Thereian of Naughty Designs has released some long-awaited short styles for men (“Dare” and “Modern Edge”).
  • Mystikal Faddoul of Mystikal Hair Designs came out with “Brat”, a flexifed style with scultped hat.
  • Nephilaine Protagonist of Pixeldolls puts sculpties to the test with a collection of tintable longleeves, jeans, and a velvet jacket.

Review: -[Kalico Kreations]- by Kenny Sleeper

crouch.jpgThe first thing you will learn about me is that I am obsessed with the apocalypse. Give me a mass disaster, burned-out cities, and the straggling remnants of people struggling to rebuild civilization, and I’m good to go. In theory, anyway. I doubt it’s as much fun to live in as to play with.

Postapocalyptic neko-emo-wear isn’t what you’d expect to find in a store called Kalico Kreations, but the collection by Kenny Sleeper is packed with everything you might expect to find in a nuclear-blasted wasteland. I found clothes, scarves, collars, nose spikes, a gas mask, even a jetpack made from an old propeller. Given my lust for all things Road Warrior, it was really difficult to keep from blowing my entire wad. I had L$56 left when I was through. No lie. (more…)

Following some constructive and pointed feedback from our valued readers the format of this segment as been slightly adjusted. You are really making me work for this. But I enjoy a good challenge. Items have been arranged in categories and descriptions have been made more concise (3 to 5 short sentences each). Due to time and resource constraints designer-created images have been used in the product highlights. If there are any further comments you may have on the changes please feel free to post.

Is it any wonder that this was also a week that was rife with male fashion content? We’ve got a fairly diverse round-up with amongst the categories in addition to two sales. And of course I felt obligated to write about the quality products I saw and/or tried on.

event_hairfair_bandanaday.jpgToday marks the closing day of Hair Fair and most significant is the association with Bandana Day. Residents are encouraged to take their wigs off and replace them with one of the varying bandana styles, colours and patterns that have been created by the Hair Fair showcase designers. All proceeds from bandana sales go to the Locks of Love children’s charity. Stop by the Hair Fair sims (Hermit Heaven and Prim Paradise) and grab one or more of the 50L bandanas at the three display tables provided.

New: Henkei tattoo @ FORM Gear

henkai_07_tank.jpgI’ve had my eye on the Henkei Tattoo Series by Zabitan Assia of FORM Gear for a while now.  The artwork for all of the earlier entries in this series has been intricate and amazing, but the design work on the new addition, seventh in the series, especially wowed me.  I decided I was ready to move beyond the (more or less) discreet tattoos I’ve been wearing and try something with more substance and presence.  This gorgeous upper-body tattoo–with detailed artwork available to cover the arms, shoulders, collarbone, and back–is just the inspiration I needed.

Zab was a little mysterious when I asked him about inspirations for the artwork.  “Just the typical dragons I like to use.  I use them a lot…[as a] symbol of power, strength, and [they] just generally look cool.”  What, you can’t make up a story?  “HAHAHA!  If there was one worth tellin’, I’d tell ya.  :P” (more…)

Hana Tattoo @ Form

FormHanaTat.jpgI am trying my hand at CS2 so let me know if you like this picture or if I should just stick to the plain white background. I’ll let the readers decide!

Am I the only one who logs in to SL thinking ‘I wonder if Zab released a new tat today?’ lol. Well yesterday my prayers were answered! I know a lot of you are thinking, yeah he makes the greatest tattoos ever but I cant afford $1500. Well my friends, you dont have to. Even though it is a limited release, it comes with a not so limiting price tag, just L$500! Even all you kids who rely on camping for your income can afford that price… but you better get busy cause time is running out.

When I first seen the advert for Hana I was a little weary of the jacket-style, but after putting it on, I think it is absolutely amazing! The detail and shading on this thing absolutely blew me away. You really do have to see it in person to appreciate how well it is crafted.
It comes in two different styles, with or without the kanji down the middle. Personally I think the kanji down the middle sets it off, but believe it or not, not everyone thinks exactly like me. I know, its hard to believe, but I will leave it up to you to decide which you love better but one thing is for certain, you are going to love it!!
forums_HanaTattooAd.jpg

Some thoughts from the designer:

“It’s a more traditional Yakuza jacket-style tattoo. Comes with and without the kanji down the middle. I tried to keep it unisexy, so hopefully it’ll appeal to both guys and gals. Undershirt layers only, and not compatible with the Henkei tatts. Please try the demo before you buy. Mod/Copy/No Trans, so no refunds. This is a limited release and special price, so get it before it’s gone!”
