Being classy on Second Life in a predominantly hip-hop environment is not easy. I’ve been on the game for well over one year and from the first day to the day I wrote this I can honestly say certain scenes on SL have and will never change. Every group, every clique, every organization has a particular style they represent. In the hip-hop community it’s usually as follows:
1 pair of Nike Uptown styled sneakers (tennis shoes for those of you in the south)
1 pair of baggy jeans
1 sports jersey
1 excessively over-primmed platinum chain and matching earrings
And last but not least, 1 oversized baseball cap representing the local team (more…)

It’s official–swaffette has gone a little bit mad.
In the best way possible, I mean. Her new Performance Suit, released earlier this month, may just be the most impressively flexible suit I’ve ever worn. Dozens of pieces provide for what seems like tons of mix-and-match wear options. I tried to count up the possibilities, but I gave up when I lost track and had to start over. Twice. I kid you not.
swaffette’s creation is a classic English three-piece suit, in an attractive slim cut, with two-button jacket. This simple description doesn’t begin to convey the extensive planning and effort that have clearly gone into such a generous “single garment” offering. If that doesn’t signify some kind of madness, I don’t know what does. But you be the judge. (more…)

There’s a big “Fire Sale” going on at Blaze! All Tuxes, Suits, Dresses and Pumps are just L$100, Gowns L$100-200, bundles for even less. The sale ends June 14, and many items will be retired, so don’t wait around!

It will come as no surprise to you when I observe the truism that Spring and Summer are, sartorially speaking, quite different from Fall and Winter. Fabrics are lighter in weight, brighter in color, bolder in pattern, and layering for hot and cold weather are entirely different things. Even though the climate where I live is overall pretty mild, my RL wardrobe for warm weather is very different than for the cooler seasons. Temperatures and precipitation aside, Spring and Summer just feel more casual to me–I wear a lot of shorts, linen trousers and casual shirts, and apparently I’ll wear sandals with anything. But what to do when the sun is blazing down, but the occasion is formal, and a linen suit simply won’t do? (more…)

I recently received an intriguing note from edo Tone, designer of fantastic formalwear. In the note (and I’m paraphrasing here), edo acknowledged the problematic nature of white clothing in SL and nonetheless stated his firm belief that men still want white suits and tuxedos. With this in mind, he had recently completed a white tuxedo of which he was very proud, and it was his humble hope that others would admire it too. He included a couple of snapshots for my reference.
I was intrigued. I decided to take a closer look. After all, short of nuking the site from orbit, it’s the only way to be sure. edo’s White Tuxedo for 2009 is a beautiful piece of work. I think it compares most favorably with Shai’s Classic Tux in white, which has been my go-to white tux for the last several months. It’s good to have options. (more…)

I love dressing up and going out. I mean, hey, who doesn’t? There’s just something about looking good that makes you feel good. Plus, as my granny used to say, “Looking nice shows people you care.” If there’s one thing my sisters and I have learned in life it’s that, over time, our granny and our mom are always right.
What does it take to “look good”? Of course there’s no simple way to answer that question, but I’m going to take a fairly traditional approach today and start with a suit. If you’re worried that this means I’m suggesting that “looking good = stuffy,” fear not! And trust me.
Although it’s not a new discovery, I truly feel you just can’t go wrong with the classic Wool Suit by Blaze Columbia. There are certainly plenty of other suits out there, and I own a number of other fine ones, but this is the one I keep coming back to–the lines are clean, the style classic, the detailing meticulous, and the colors to die for. I love this luxurious, softly shiny blue like I love my dog. Well, like I imagine I would love my dog, if I had a dog. (more…)

After two years in Second Life (SL) I am only now realizing how much SL mimics Real Life (RL) — be it personalities, behaviours, creations, fashions and more (1). I dare say, without trying, my RL self has bled almost fully into my SL self. When I first entered SL I knew I wished to explore the Victorian gentleman aspect of myself. Being a clothes whore in RL, it was natural for me to insist on finding just the perfect outfits that I had envisioned towards my creation. Two years ago, the selection of Victorian clothing available was miniscule and in many cases, not exactly what I was looking for. I suffered my fashion crisis in silence, but remained vigilant in keeping a spectacled eye towards growing and new designers. (more…)

I did something new and unusual this year. I took vacation over the Christmas and New Year holidays. Two weeks off from work, to be precise. I had no travel plans, as my immediately family members all live fairly close to one another, but I wanted to try out a less busy and stressful holiday season, to see what that was like. I had all these plans for fun and productive things I was going to do, and some of these were actually accomplished. But mostly I, um, sat around and was pretty mellow.
As fallout, I suppose, of all this calm and relaxation, the holidays seemed for me perhaps not to pass more slowly but somehow to last longer, if that makes sense. Here it is, January 8, and I’m still feeling festive. Hey, we’ve only just passed Twelfth Night! In fact, our tree is still up.
I’m also still (so far) going strong with winter formalwear, although I might be just about ready to wrap this series up. Today’s installment features new creations by swaffette Firefly, longtime SL resident and designer, currently available at her new über classy formalwear boutique, High Society. (more…)

Is there such a thing as casual formalwear? Some would call the very idea an oxymoron, an impossibility. Yelmer Pfeffer clearly believes the answer is Yes, and he makes a compelling case in some of his winter design offerings. (more…)

In my previous “Winter formals” post I featured some contemporary but classic men’s formal-dress items by edo Tone. You may still be searching for the perfect suit to wear, though, if the formal winter festivities you’ll be attending are a little less conventional, a little more…gothly. If that’s the case, I dare say you may need look no further than the Revenant Suit by Allegory Malaprop. Although sloe-eyed Frosty here seems indifferent to its charms, not to mention my own, I can assure you that it’s a remarkable piece of sartorial engineering indeed. It has, in fact, already prompted unsolicited compliments (the best kind) from unexpected quarters. You really must take a closer look. (more…)

He saw her at dusk, standing at the Blood Fountain. He had only just arisen for the night, and she must have known that, must have been waiting. She was brave, or reckless, perhaps thoughtless, certainly foolish–but, however mildly curious he might be, in the end he knew it was of no importance. She was there; that was all that mattered. She could not possibly have made herself more an offering, no matter if she had tried for an eternity. She was beautiful, which was pleasing if unnecessary, and she was daringly attired, which was unsurprising. Her bared neck and shoulders amused him, her prayerful stance struck him as forceful if unoriginal, but her rosary necklace pushed him almost to the brink of laughter. It was not that the Christian cross had no power–no, not at all. But it was after all only a symbol, and meant little in the absence of belief, however limited. And he did not sense from her anything like belief. From her he sensed only anticipation, expectation…resignation? Was it? With most it would have been, but not with her. Interesting.
He knew she was his when she deigned to notice his presence. (more…)

Hello; my name is Mr. Oh and I’m a Sparroholic. But I have to show you this suit, even though Ryan has just written about Thorns and in his article mentioned how addicted I am.
Entropy is the latest triumph in hyasynth Tiramisu’s efforts to bring beautifully textured full-length suits to the men and women of Second Life. (As usual, please click the photos for more detail.)
The piece you’ll notice first is the jacket. It’s floor-length, with a flexi-prim that flows nicely when you walk or turn or dance. There are also prim attachment sleeve-cuffs. What makes the jacket so desirable, though, is the way the light is reflected and absorbed by luxurious cloth with its wonderful and intricate patterning. (more…)

I am the stone that breaks all hearts. I am the nails that bound the Christ to his cross. I am the arrow that pierced a King’s eye. Second-man.com regulars need no introduction to the work of Raven Pennyfeather. RFyre outfits are always richly detailed, deeply coloured, and usually full of options and amazing prim features. The latest outfit, Unseelie, is clearly and unmistakeably in that tradition.
Terribly romantic rather than pure gothic, Unseelie consists of tight leather trousers, a rough white cable-knit shirt, either a jacket with prim belt and bottom, complementary collar and shoulder-guards (with a greenish tinge); or a waistcoat, which which the prim belt and bottom also work. If you wear the jacket, prim “sleeves” join the gloves in a great design. If you wear the waistcoat, the woolen shirt has some bunched sleeve cuffs with lace extentions. The shirt also comes with a loose and gauzy collar. Socks are also included, but not boots. (more…)

Hey, you there! Yes, you. I know what you’re thinking, but it’s not true. Well, I suppose you’d have that same silly grin if I had titled this post “She Bop.”
I love exploring sims that showcase builds and other creative work by Japanese designers. Whether it’s clothing at Back and Forth, jewelry and accessories by Yukirei Greene, hair at Zero Style, or skins, hair and clothing at Z#road Men’s Shop, the design work often reflects the influences of both historical and contemporary Japanese culture as well as anime, manga and other forms of art. There’s a unique sensibility and a distinct “feel” to much of the design work by members of the Japanese community in SL. I find it appealing, refreshing, and just…fun. (more…)

Where do you go to get your wow outfits? The answer to that tells me a lot about you. But now… where do you go to get your staple clothes? That tells me even more. In your closet, it isn’t the dramatic outfits on their luxury form-fitting hangers that reveal your character as much as the rest of the stuff, hanging on wire hangers and folded up in your drawers.
And so it is that while I love the sudden thrill of finding a shop with something new and wild, I’m just as impressed when I can walk around the shop and gradually come to the conviction that, yeah, they sell just about everything and I could pretty much wear any of it quite happily.
Such a shop is Kerem Lunt’s King for Men.
Take for instance my first combination. The brown Canvas Trousers (L$145 in brown, light brown or black) have a nice earthy glow to them. They attract the eye, but are willing to yield attention back to the top, the red Argyle Sweater (L$135 in light brown, white, red, grey, green or brown; the white comes with a black shirt peeking through underneath, all the others have a white one). See what I mean, though? Wear an outfit like this and no one is going to gasp. But those with an eye, those with discernment, the ones you want to notice… they’ll notice. (more…)

It was Ryan who last mentioned Yukimaru Koba’s Z#road shop, back in January. He was reviewing some skins. I found myself in the shop for the first time this week and it was the blazers that impressed me. I think the best of the lot is the dark blue blazer with matching trousers. It’s one of the sharpest suits I own now. The fabric is so soft and comfortable. Some suits in SL are all perfect creases and smooth, straight lines, and some SL suits have wrinkles that have become permanent creases. The Z#road blazers and trousers are marvelously in the middle. There are some sharp creases in the right places, and no creases in the wrong places, but other than that, this almost liquid feel — it ripples rather than wrinkles. And I love it.
The red jacket is pale, almost salmon, and clearly on the ’strong’ side of the border with pastel. The trousers that come with it are called white, but in fact they are more eggshell off-white. The debonair cheerfulness of this bright outfit (more…)

There’s not much I enjoy more than finding, playing with and (eventually) writing about some remarkable SL creation. It’s even better if the remarkable thing in question includes numerous prim attachments. That is, quite simply, one of my favorite things. There’s just something about a big, beautiful pile of prim attachments–it’s kind of like a new car. I think it’s the smell. It smells like…victory. Or maybe plastic.
My latest toy-slash-obsession is the Steam-Powered Mechanical Suit by Zoe Llewelyn, who also happens to be the creator of my first and still much-loved neko ears and tail set. This amazing construct includes so many prim attachments that you can’t wear them all at the same time, so I’m in heaven. But wait, there’s more! Several of them are scripted to do cool stuff. Does it get any better? I think not. (more…)

Sometimes I really miss the idea of the Sixties and Seventies. I say the idea because because I’m not actually old enough to have memories of those decades–not adult ones anyway, the kind that could contribute to actual nostalgia. No, what I’m talking about here is the misty-eyed kind of idealized, arguably faux nostalgia for bygone eras, or rather for romanticized notions of bygone eras. Styles and fashion are a classic trigger for this kind of heartfelt pining. I’m reminded of my sister who, when she was about fifteen, was mooning over Fifties fashions in a book and wished aloud that poodle skirts would make a comeback. My mother snorted and said, “Poodle skirts! I hope I never see another one. They weren’t comfortable, they only looked good on you if you had just the right figure, and it was a chore to keep them looking nice. Phooey on poodle skirts.” My sister was immediately deflated. Real memories vs. faux nostalgia…see the difference? (more…)

Like (I am sure) many of you, I’ve been seeing some pretty amazing things coming from the designers and content creators associated with Rezzable. I was lucky enough to receive the gift of a truly amazing sculpture by Light Waves, and this is just the tip of an impressive collective creative iceberg. Located in the Rezzable sim, the goth-punk shop Crimson Shadow features clothing creations by a variety of designers, including Tox1c Chemistry and Draconic Lioncourt.
Now, hyasynth Tiramisu of Silent Sparrow is contributing her own luxe goth design sensibilities to Crimson Shadow in the form of her new Batpunk Suits. They’re elegant, even refined in design but daring, sensual, and confident in execution. The colors (Blue, Orchid and Blood, shown here) are strong and perhaps not for the faint of heart. (more…)

Now, I don’t mean “guywear” in the sense that it’s clothing Lloyd Dobler would wear. (”The world is full of guys. Don’t be a guy. Be a man.”) It’s just that “menswear” seemed somehow not quite right here. Yes, I’m making it up as I go along. Anyway, Lloyd might well wear some of this stuff. I’m thinking by the end of the movie.
I seem to recall that Garbage Prototype had dropped one or two vague hints during the two months or so it took him to redesign and rebuild his shop and completely revamp his clothing and body lines for men and women. I think he just likes to tease like that. This is the kind of thing that just nags away at me from the back of my brain, kind of like my mother, or my conscience if I had one, or the approach of Christmas when I was a kid. I had also visited his website and seen his teaser video, so I knew that interesting things were afoot at the Circle-K. When he finally said, “Okay, I’m not ready to open yet, but come and take a look if you want to!”–I most definitely wanted to.
I honestly don’t know what my expectations were. I didn’t expect the shop’s casually elegant atmosphere to so slyly reflect Garbage’s creative approach. I know that I was surprised by some of the designs–wow, Garbage did a suit?–and impressed by the range of items and choice of colors. As a collection it felt focused, consistent, and very much an expression of a designer’s vision. I couldn’t wait to pick his brain. (more…)

Gonna make this short and sweet. There’s a hunt going on at the Haute Couture sim until 8 am 5 pm SLT tomorrow. There’s one gift for guys at the Chez store there, the charcoal pinstripe suit. Mr. Jacobus reviewed this suit last year. Its double-breasted and its a pinstripe suit. I like that. a lot. And its layered with separate jacket, tie, and shirt layers for flexibility with a wide variety of other shirts and ties. I haven’t shown them, but the shirt comes with prim cuffs for wear without the jacket. They’re a bit big but can be modified to size.
Also, I’m wearing free hair and eyes from UncleWeb, following a tip from Creamy on Free*style. My only beef with these eyes is that they have reddening (like real eyes) near the edges, and it makes those disaffected, aloof “model shots” where you look off to the side look rather ugly. The hair only comes in specific colors, though I was decently successful at tinting the browns into reds and darker browns. Also, I was unable to the find the first style of freebie hair (I found 2, and am wearing 3, and 4 is for women). If anyone sees the first style, tell me. I’ll give you a donut.
Finally, I decided to let Mike Oxlong wear his original skin, the LF0y male skin from Eloh Eliot, that Creamy packages with the shape at Free*style HQ. LF0y has a fancy manicure and pedicure going on due to its heritage as a female skin. If you want to fix it, just head over to Eloh’s blog and download the textures yourself. A bit of time in photoshop and you can fix em
