Hard-working suits at Subversion

LTHOUGH MANY OF HIS OTHER products are not aimed at all of us, men of any orientation should know about and probably own some of Prynce Llewellyn‘s finely composed and hard-working suits. These are strongly-styled but structurally simple suits, with no fussy prim attachments but plenty of layers and options.

Tweed Suit is probably my favourite. Wear it with a retro, pale matching sweater, or a traditional white button-down shirt. Wear the shirt with the collar buttoned or unbuttoned or with a necktie of matching colour. Everything just matches, everything just works. (more…)

David Suit at Eros Designs

a crazily optimistic statement about our self-understanding as human beings. That an artist like Keth Mommsen puts the effort and energy into designing virtual clothing as distinguished and elegant as her ‘David’ suit for men, and that apparently there are now enough men who value such quality to make these efforts rewarding, warms my analogue heart.

It’s a black tux, there are no grey or white or brown versions. And the shirt is always white. But there is a veritable rainbow of colours of vest and matching cravat ties. Oh, and what ties. It was the cravat that made David a must-own for me. Rich, extravagant bunched fabric, almost more a scarf but tied like a tie; lovely! (more…)

Old and New at Baiastice

Nathaniel1.jpgithin the last week or two, Italian designer Sissy Pessoa has brought in a wealth of new men’s shirts and trousers for summer. I’ll show you a few of those in a minute. First, though, let me tell you about my favourite outfit that’s been out for a while. This is Nathaniel Suit in blue from Baiastice. (As usual, click the picture to see the full-sized version.)

There’s something very casual about the cut of the jacket. And it doesn’t hurt that the material looks like denim, especially on the blue version. The light and colour play on the fabric wonderfully, making it a fascinating garment to look at. The trousers in particular win my admiration. Note that since they are low-waisted, a shirt that is only on the shirt- or undershirt-layer will leave a gap. Even wearing the jacket there’s a tiny triangle of a hole where the underlying layer shows through at the waist. But with the right shirt (here I’m wearing an Oxford from Schadenfreude), I find these are currently my favourite trousers. (more…)

Rogues of New Babbage: Part the Second

vincent_full.jpgThe Dandy

His grandfather, Eustacio Babbage, had founded the great steamworks that had first allowed the great city of New Babbage to rise like a phoenix from the squalor of the grubby hamlet most now dismissed with no small contempt as Old Babbage, but which had then been simply Babbage.  He himself now ran that steamworks, greatly expanded since its initial construction, and was immensely proud of the fact that it provided the power that drove most of New Babbage.  Indeed, it was the steamworks that drove Industry itself and made life possible at their current impressive level of technological advancement, with all the accompanying creature comforts that the citizenry enjoyed so thoroughly. Best wishes for a very dramatic New Year’s Eve

frock_coat_full.jpgI love New Year’s Eve.  In some ways, it reminds me of my senior prom.  It’s an opportunity to get all glammed up, go out to a fabulous party, and play for an evening at being grown-up, or maybe at being rich.  Or both.

And a great beauty of SL is that you don’t have to be rich to play at being rich.  For the equivalent of the cost of a mocha latte or two, you can outfit your SL self in stunning style, with attire and accessories that would be the envy of even the hottest flavor-of-the-moment supermodel.  Not that supermodels care all that much, anyway; wearing beautiful clothing is just a job to them.

It’s become something of an annual tradition for me to feature formalwear from Styles of edo.  I guess that shouldn’t be too surprising—edo Tone’s formals are among the best I’ve seen, and they’re always some of my favorites.  I’ve chosen a few designs from his 2009 collection that I think are especially noteworthy.  Hopefully you’ll think so, too. The beauty of flexibility: Suits by Musashi-Do

evening_in_roma_close.jpgShiryu Musashi has been designing for the SL fashion scene for coming up on five years now—his store, Musashi-Do, officially opened on November 27, 2004.  I don’t know about you, but this is significantly earlier than my own rez date.  He has a well-earned reputation for painstaking perfectionism, and his hand-painted fabric textures are beyond reproach.  Shiryu has recently released some new suits for men—something that’s always nice to see!—and these are accompanied by his own innovation in dress neckwear:  the InfiniTIE. The Plague Doctor

Plague01.jpg
Plague never rests for long.

The plague doctor moves through dark cities, his heavy cloak rustling with each step, his leather shoes a whisper on the damp streets.  The world groans with sickness, and where there are labored breaths, aching shivers under blankets, and disease-dizzied minds, the doctor will go. (more…)

{AHC} by AlexanderHunter Rembrandt

ahc_valenciaga_shop_lounge.jpgIn SL, I try to get out of my RL box, from time to time at least.  Isn’t that a big part of what SL is for, really?  My recent Prince of the Underworld is miles removed from anything I’d wear in RL, probably even for Halloween, if only for practical reasons.  Stuff like that is a lot of fun, and it’s good to stretch.  I do have my comfort zone, though, and every once in a while I run into some new designs that seem quite literally tailor-made for me and my own tastes.  AlexanderHunter Rembrandt’s just-opened {AHC} (the initials stand for “AlexanderHunter’s Couture”) houses just such a collection.  AlexanderHunter says that his goal with {AHC} is “class and excellence with just a hint of sexiness for both men and women…haute couture and accessories inspired by real life’s top designers.  The collections are seasonal and therefore available only for a few months, making every design a limited edition.”  The names of the various specialty shops at {AHC} reflect these inspirations:  Dulce & Ghanel women’s wear; Valenciaga men’s wear; Prava men and women’s footwear; Vuittior men and women’s jewelry, handbags, and additional accessories; and San Lauren men and women’s skins and hairstyles.  They also convey a slyness and sense of fun suggesting that AlexanderHunter isn’t taking himself too seriously. Death takes a holiday

garrett_red_close.jpgMortis was bored.  He hadn’t gone anywhere in ages.  Well, unless you counted going to and fro on the earth, and walking up and down upon it.  Which he, himself, did not count.  He couldn’t believe he had ever let Lucifer talk him into that one.  When you came right down to it, it was hardly an enjoyable pastime—in fact, it was worse than jogging—and it wasn’t like he needed the cardio.  No, he wanted to go out and have some fun.  He wanted to go dancing.  Goth black boots or no, his feet were nimble and he knew how to trip the light fantastic.  If you asked Mortis, dancing hadn’t been the same since the end of disco.  That Travolta was one mortal who knew how to move.  Well, he had some moves of his own, if he did say so himself.  God, but the Seventies had been great.  On earth, anyway—everywhere else they had kind of sucked. Deadwool by Masa Plympton

otto_suit_full.jpgThey told me I could find the tailor’s cabin out in the forest of Isola Gavia.  I was at first a bit taken aback—this would be no easy trek of a day or two and, as I would not be able to bring my horse across the channel, I would be on foot on the island.  I was given further pause when I learned that my guns would not be welcome.  What manner of place was this?  I was assured that my safety would be in no way compromised.  This tailor, Masa by name, was reputed to be among the very best, and I was, after all, in great and dire need of one or more new suits of clothing.  So saddled up and I undertook the journey with high hopes and, truth be told, some small apprehension.

The traveling directions I had been given were clear and accurate, and I was met at the channel crossing by a man of quiet demeanor and serious but not dour expression.  We negotiated payment for the crossing and return.  “Will you be staying the night, sir?  There are accommodations to be found, and entertainments to be enjoyed.”  I felt certain that I could not sleep the night without my guns nearby, and told the man I would meet him to return an hour before sundown.  He nodded, and then he helped me to stable my horse and silently took my guns when I offered them.  I found myself feeling not just vulnerable but somehow unclothed without them. Fashioning an Elegant Fursona

elric_027.jpg
Akin to humans, furs come in all shapes and sizes, with the added complexity of species to consider.  Perhaps a little more challenging, albeit very rewarding, is customizing your furry self.  Unlike humans, furry avatars do not have an easy to use slider system for changing the shape and size of various attributes.  And while clothes may make the man, they most definitely make the fur–as do accessories; for it is the easiest way to express individuality when bound by a (usually) difficult-to-modify avatar.  Before I jump into apparel however, I do wish to say a few words about some of the customizations possible with a furry avatar.  Results vary, as does everyone’s desire to modify his or her base furry avatar. An Elf in Summer

garden_flowers.jpg
Do you ever get a crazy question stuck in your head, and you just can’t shake it?  You know what I mean.  It’s usually an “I wonder” type of question, typically one with no readily apparent answer.  For a kid it may be, “I wonder why the sky is blue?”  Adults may venture into the philosophical with “How do they get all those clowns in that little clown car?”  And then there’s the eternal classic: “How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?”

Well, recently for me it was “I wonder how elves dress in summer?”  I know—it’s not exactly earth-shattering.  And yet…I really wondered.  How do elves dress, anyway, for say a summer picnic?  Or a cruise, maybe, or just business casual?  Try though I might, I just couldn’t shake it. (more…)

renji_008.jpgBeing classy on Second Life in a predominantly hip-hop environment is not easy.  I’ve been on the game for well over one year and from the first day to the day I wrote this I can honestly say certain scenes on SL have and will never change.  Every group, every clique, every organization has a particular style they represent.  In the hip-hop community it’s usually as follows:

1 pair of Nike Uptown styled sneakers (tennis shoes for those of you in the south)
1 pair of baggy jeans
1 sports jersey
1 excessively over-primmed platinum chain and matching earrings

A return to classicism

performance_suit_full.jpgIt’s official–swaffette has gone a little bit mad.

In the best way possible, I mean.  Her new Performance Suit, released earlier this month, may just be the most impressively flexible suit I’ve ever worn.  Dozens of pieces provide for what seems like tons of mix-and-match wear options.  I tried to count up the possibilities, but I gave up when I lost track and had to start over.  Twice.  I kid you not.

swaffette’s creation is a classic English three-piece suit, in an attractive slim cut, with two-button jacket.  This simple description doesn’t begin to convey the extensive planning and effort that have clearly gone into such a generous “single garment” offering.  If that doesn’t signify some kind of madness, I don’t know what does.  But you be the judge. When formality is called for

signature_tux_gray_full.jpgIt will come as no surprise to you when I observe the truism that Spring and Summer are, sartorially speaking, quite different from Fall and Winter.  Fabrics are lighter in weight, brighter in color, bolder in pattern, and layering for hot and cold weather are entirely different things.  Even though the climate where I live is overall pretty mild, my RL wardrobe for warm weather is very different than for the cooler seasons.  Temperatures and precipitation aside, Spring and Summer just feel more casual to me–I wear a lot of shorts, linen trousers and casual shirts, and apparently I’ll wear sandals with anything.  But what to do when the sun is blazing down, but the occasion is formal, and a linen suit simply won’t do? New: Formals in white @ Styles of edo

white_tuxedo_2009_close.jpgI recently received an intriguing note from edo Tone, designer of fantastic formalwear.  In the note (and I’m paraphrasing here), edo acknowledged the problematic nature of white clothing in SL and nonetheless stated his firm belief that men still want white suits and tuxedos.  With this in mind, he had recently completed a white tuxedo of which he was very proud, and it was his humble hope that others would admire it too.  He included a couple of snapshots for my reference.

I was intrigued.  I decided to take a closer look.  After all, short of nuking the site from orbit, it’s the only way to be sure.  edo’s White Tuxedo for 2009 is a beautiful piece of work.  I think it compares most favorably with Shai’s Classic Tux in white, which has been my go-to white tux for the last several months.  It’s good to have options. Dressing up and going out

dressing_up_and_going_out_full.jpgI love dressing up and going out.  I mean, hey, who doesn’t?  There’s just something about looking good that makes you feel good.  Plus, as my granny used to say, “Looking nice shows people you care.”  If there’s one thing my sisters and I have learned in life it’s that, over time, our granny and our mom are always right.

What does it take to “look good”?  Of course there’s no simple way to answer that question, but I’m going to take a fairly traditional approach today and start with a suit.  If you’re worried that this means I’m suggesting that “looking good = stuffy,” fear not!  And trust me.

Although it’s not a new discovery, I truly feel you just can’t go wrong with the classic Wool Suit by Blaze Columbia.  There are certainly plenty of other suits out there, and I own a number of other fine ones, but this is the one I keep coming back to–the lines are clean, the style classic, the detailing meticulous, and the colors to die for.  I love this luxurious, softly shiny blue like I love my dog.  Well, like I imagine I would love my dog, if I had a dog. elric_03.jpgAfter two years in Second Life (SL) I am only now realizing how much SL mimics Real Life (RL) — be it personalities, behaviours, creations, fashions and more (1).  I dare say, without trying, my RL self has bled almost fully into my SL self.  When I first entered SL I knew I wished to explore the Victorian gentleman aspect of myself.  Being a clothes whore in RL, it was natural for me to insist on finding just the perfect outfits that I had envisioned towards my creation.  Two years ago, the selection of Victorian clothing available was miniscule and in many cases, not exactly what I was looking for.  I suffered my fashion crisis in silence, but remained vigilant in keeping a spectacled eye towards growing and new designers. Winter formals [iv] : High Society by SF Design

hamilton_tux_black_gold_coat.jpgI did something new and unusual this year.  I took vacation over the Christmas and New Year holidays.  Two weeks off from work, to be precise.  I had no travel plans, as my immediately family members all live fairly close to one another, but I wanted to try out a less busy and stressful holiday season, to see what that was like.  I had all these plans for fun and productive things I was going to do, and some of these were actually accomplished.  But mostly I, um, sat around and was pretty mellow.

As fallout, I suppose, of all this calm and relaxation, the holidays seemed for me perhaps not to pass more slowly but somehow to last longer, if that makes sense.  Here it is, January 8, and I’m still feeling festive.  Hey, we’ve only just passed Twelfth Night!  In fact, our tree is still up.

I’m also still (so far) going strong with winter formalwear, although I might be just about ready to wrap this series up.  Today’s installment features new creations by swaffette Firefly, longtime SL resident and designer, currently available at her new über classy formalwear boutique, High Society. Winter formals [ii] : Schadenfreude

revenant_suit_festive.jpgIn my previous “Winter formals” post I featured some contemporary but classic men’s formal-dress items by edo Tone. You may still be searching for the perfect suit to wear, though, if the formal winter festivities you’ll be attending are a little less conventional, a little more…gothly. If that’s the case, I dare say you may need look no further than the Revenant Suit by Allegory Malaprop. Although sloe-eyed Frosty here seems indifferent to its charms, not to mention my own, I can assure you that it’s a remarkable piece of sartorial engineering indeed. It has, in fact, already prompted unsolicited compliments (the best kind) from unexpected quarters. You really must take a closer look. (more…)

blood_fountain.jpgHe saw her at dusk, standing at the Blood Fountain.  He had only just arisen for the night, and she must have known that, must have been waiting.  She was brave, or reckless, perhaps thoughtless, certainly foolish–but, however mildly curious he might be, in the end he knew it was of no importance.  She was there; that was all that mattered.  She could not possibly have made herself more an offering, no matter if she had tried for an eternity.  She was beautiful, which was pleasing if unnecessary, and she was daringly attired, which was unsurprising.  Her bared neck and shoulders amused him, her prayerful stance struck him as forceful if unoriginal, but her rosary necklace pushed him almost to the brink of laughter.  It was not that the Christian cross had no power–no, not at all.  But it was after all only a symbol, and meant little in the absence of belief, however limited.  And he did not sense from her anything like belief.  From her he sensed only anticipation, expectation…resignation?  Was it?  With most it would have been, but not with her.  Interesting.

He knew she was his when she deigned to notice his presence. (more…)

New: Entropy @ Silent Sparrow

FirstPhoto.jpgHello; my name is Mr. Oh and I’m a Sparroholic. But I have to show you this suit, even though Ryan has just written about Thorns and in his article mentioned how addicted I am.

Entropy is the latest triumph in hyasynth Tiramisu’s efforts to bring beautifully textured full-length suits to the men and women of Second Life. (As usual, please click the photos for more detail.)

amberDetail1.jpgThe piece you’ll notice first is the jacket. It’s floor-length, with a flexi-prim that flows nicely when you walk or turn or dance. There are also prim attachment sleeve-cuffs. What makes the jacket so desirable, though, is the way the light is reflected and absorbed by luxurious cloth with its wonderful and intricate patterning. (more…)
