The Good, the Bad, and the Problematic

(with ruminations on “Me” in SL)

In my last post, I wrote about petite mesh avatars and the fun I’ve been having with mine. In recent months, we’ve also seen the introduction and increasing popularity of mesh feet and hands. Many if not most of us see the distinct aesthetic advantages of mesh feet, as the default SL avatar’s feet are sad little spade-like appendages that simply don’t hold up under close inspection. Toes? We don’t need no steenkin’ toes! Well, you know, actually we do. At least it would be nice.

Small packages

Bigger is not necessarily better. I know, I know—size matters, and all that. People do say that. But as always, it’s not what you’ve got: it’s what you do with it that matters. Read the rest of this entry »

Closing sale at [dekade]

Today is the last day to buy sale-price skins (including three for men) at dekade, which is closing at 12pm SLT today, 20 May 2012. All items are at least 50-70% off, and all skins will be retired at the end of the sale.

Mesh Baggyz from Neurolab Inc.

I’m still exploring the Wonderful World of Mesh, slowly but steadily. It’s interesting and encouraging to see the increasingly polished and sophisticated design work being done. Of course here I’m thinking specifically of clothing items, but I’ve seen some remarkable pieces of furniture and other creations as well. Although opinions vary and mesh is by no means a magic bullet for any of the clothing issues we’ve grumbled about for so long, I think it has some great features. Properly rigged, mesh garments are able to move impressively with your avatar—and neither skin-tight, like garment-layer clothing items, nor segmented, as prim or sculptie attachments that span joints necessarily are. I also love the level of textural detail that’s possible, which far surpasses what can be done with garment-layer clothing textures. Read the rest of this entry »

Ghost boys are scary, too

In J-horror (and to a certain extent in horror from Asian countries other than Japan) there’s a well known archetype: the scary girl with long hair. She is traditionally a ghost or spirit, often with a horrifying face and inhuman skin, and she is most definitely scary. She is almost always bent on vengeance for wrongs done to her in life. Think of the central supernatural figures in “Ringu” (“The Ring”), “Ju-On” (“The Grudge”), and “Janghwa, Hongryeon” (“A Tale of Two Sisters”, actually an example of K-horror )—you’ll know just what I mean. The synergy of shape and skin [i]

Those of you who have been following along here for a while will surely know that for quite a long time I wore almost exclusively my own shape, for pretty much everything. What you may not know is that, while I’m still recognizable as that boy who emerged fresh from Orientation Island in July 2006, my shape has indeed changed over the years. I have the whole “History of Ryan” in my inventory, from Ryan 1.0 on up—I think the current version is 3.2b. All the changes have been relatively minor, some less so than others, and I haven’t made many changes at all in probably the last year or so. Read the rest of this entry »

They tried to make me go to rehab, but I said no, no, no

[BEGIN TRANSCRIPT]

Hey, is that thing on? Okay, I see the light blinking. Fresh batteries, right? Make sure you get it all down now, because don’t think you’re calling me back for a second round because your batteries died. Oh, and I want a copy—not that I don’t trust you, but still. Just for reference. Don’t send it to me, send it to my agent. She takes fifteen percent, she might as well do something once in a while. Read the rest of this entry »

Not quite the First Deadly Sin, but still

Every once in a while, I find it impossible to resist the temptation to indulge in a shopping spree of wild abandon. It’s been a while since the last time, and I thought maybe I had somehow been cured. But it happened again just recently, and for this latest fall from grace I really must blame Mr. Oh, if not for the indulgence itself then at least for the temptation. You see, it was he who told me about Scars, suggesting that I should drop by and at least take a look, as he suspected that I would like what I saw. And so I found myself, having walked into Sin Knoller’s beautifully situated little main shop, almost entirely unable to walk back out (or teleport, for that matter) without pretty much buying the place out. Mr. Oh, j’accuse! Read the rest of this entry »
