But hey, doesn’t everybody? So I figure I’m not alone in that, not hardly. Surely you yourself are fond of getting a good deal. Here’s the thing: there are any number of other great blogs that focus on the great freebies, dollarbies and other bargains you can find in SL. As much as I like me a good bargain, bargains aren’t my main emphasis here. That said, if as you’re reading this you’re thinking, “Well, I love bargains, I’m killer at finding them, and I wouldn’t mind writing about the ones I find”…hey, give me a shout. We can do a deal, Mr. Bond! Today, though, I’ve got some great (I think they’re great) all-but-freebie items to show off. I’m hoping at least one or two of them will entice you do a little low-budget, high-value shopping.
The items making up my various outfits are all (with some few exceptions) from Slanted Fox. I’m sure I had visited Slanted Fox at some point in the past, but if I took anything home with me I’ve lost track of it somehow since then. I forget exactly what I was searching for the other day, when I ended up visiting again, but I think the phrase “3L$ Store” jumped out at me from the search listings. Apparently I must have clicked the link because there was a telltale whoosh, and next thing I knew I was in Harajukubox Town. You know, sometimes stuff just happens, and all you can do is roll with it. (more…)

The Ruffian
The kid had earned something of a bad reputation for himself in New Babbage. He supposed that was due in no small part to his tendency to, shall we say, not always pay for everything he put into his pockets on Market Day. Also, quite possibly, the fact that, when he did make payment in actual coin, that coin had not necessarily been earned by way of actual honest labor. He rolled his eyes and sighed; such distinctions were boring and tedious, and they made him feel tired. And they were pointless as well, when there was such fun to be had! (more…)

I think it may have been Oscar I was talking to when we mutually agreed that, if for some reason we could only and forever dress in risey Arai’s clothing designs, that would really be okay with us. I mean, of course we would miss the artistic approach and creative touches of any number of other designers, not to mention the simple joy of sheer variety. But risey’s designs are so comfortable, so carefully put together, so flat-out beautiful that it’s hard to imagine feeling especially deprived if for some reason my wardrobe were mysteriously limited to things I could find at :sey.
Today I’m showing off a handful of risey’s more recent releases—just a few, but they’re all sweet. Most if not all of risey’s clothing designs are characterized by excellent use of sculpties, and these are no exception. Forgive me if I run out of superlatives; it’s an occupational hazard. (more…)

Do you ever get a crazy question stuck in your head, and you just can’t shake it? You know what I mean. It’s usually an “I wonder” type of question, typically one with no readily apparent answer. For a kid it may be, “I wonder why the sky is blue?” Adults may venture into the philosophical with “How do they get all those clowns in that little clown car?” And then there’s the eternal classic: “How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?”
Well, recently for me it was “I wonder how elves dress in summer?” I know—it’s not exactly earth-shattering. And yet…I really wondered. How do elves dress, anyway, for say a summer picnic? Or a cruise, maybe, or just business casual? Try though I might, I just couldn’t shake it. (more…)

I like a good pun as much as the next guy. So it was, unsurprisingly, with a fair bit of amusement that I first visited the shop of Photos Nikolaidis, the puntastically named A:S:S. I seem to recall reading (in a notecard or somewhere?) that the name at least loosely stands for Another Stupid Shirt Shop, or some such. I admire a healthy dose of self-deprecation as much as or maybe even more than the next guy, so I heartily approve. Also, it makes me laugh, and what more do you really need? Hey, let’s see how many puns I can make! Go ahead, groan all you want, it won’t help.
Photos’ main shop is good, even impressive size–I had no idea that anyone’s A:S:S could be that big–and it’s well stocked with a wide variety of casual clothing for both men and women, including some unisex designs. I don’t mind admitting that I had some trouble deciding on a manageable handful of things to share with you here. (Setting my sights idealistically but unrealistically high is a recurring bad habit of mine.) I decided to start with a few designs that were just fun, and then go from there. (more…)

We still have a few weeks left of Spring, but Summer’s coming on fast. I can feel it sometimes in the air, and already we’ve had to run the a/c for a day or two here and there. I’ve pulled out my shorts for the season in RL, and it seems appropriate to do the same in SL.
And there’s a bonus–in SL (although not in RL, at least not yet), I have some favorite new cargo shorts. And cargo pants. All in one. I’m talking about Masaru Raymaker’s new 4-Way Cargo Pants. What exactly are 4-Way Pants? you may well be wondering. Never fear! I shall tell you.
It’s fairly straightforward, actually. The name pretty much tells the whole story. By mixing and matching from an impressive selection of clothing-layer pieces and sculpted pockets and cuffs, Masaru’s 4-Way Cargos can be worn in four different ways, for four different looks: as shorts; cropped, or rolled to just below the knee; with the standard “system” pants cuffs we all know and love/hate; and with flared, slouchie cuffs. Not only are these impressively flexible, like all of Masaru’s designs they’re amazingly good-looking. (more…)

Think back to high school. Go on, you can do it, it wasn’t that long ago. Now, be honest–with yourself, if no one else: Were you a 98-lb. weakling? A math geek? A member of the Chess Club? Here, I’ll go first. I was all of the above (okay, French Club, not Chess Club, but still). I was a geekboy, and proud of it! Well, I’m proud of it now. So it’s with no small frisson of delight (French Club, remember?) that I first surveyed and then tried on myvegancookbook Bolissima’s line of geekboy couture, out now at Adjunct. It’s all there, everything you remember–well, everything but the plastic pocket protector. And who knows? That could be in the works even as we speak.
Consider this classic ensemble. Maybe this was you, or another boy in your class, but somebody in your experience dressed just like this. Maybe he (you?) had no choice then, but now we do, and it’s empowering to take it back. The Short Sleeve Dress Shirt I’m wearing here can only be worn tucked in, of course–what self-respecting geekboy wears a dress shirt untucked? There’s a front patch pocket, and the white buttons are buttoned all the way to the top. No one would expect otherwise. Three colors, L$100 each. (more…)

Supposedly, the sport of surfing has Polynesian roots — where chiefs of certain tribes were the members of the tribe who were best at riding the waves on wooden boards. In Hawaii, surfing was a art that was tied into religion. What we know as surfing today only came about in the last 100 years, spread from Hawaii by Olympian and actor Duke Kahanamoku. Surfing is considered a sport by some and a lifestyle by others, with some surfers devoting a large part of their life to “finding the perfect wave” and furthering sport for those around them. Even Second Life has a large and thriving surf community, with organizations such as the SLSA and others documented on Surf Watch.
Unfortunately, being an outdoor sport, surfing is a little rough for vampires. In Cold Blood blogger Winter Jefferson stepped up to the task and even de-fanged himself to hit the beach and catch a few waves.

Summer may be over where you are–it is where I live, at least technically–but it’s always summer somewhere in SL. Even if the days are no longer warm outside your RL window, you can still catch a wave or work on your tan in SL. Here are just a few ideas to get you rolling.
Whether it’s at the beach, poolside, or just running through the backyard sprinklers, getting wet is a summer tradition. To make a proper appearance at any aquatic event or gathering, it’s essential to be properly outfitted. And I’m not just talking about swimwear, either, although that’s a very good start. No, you’re going to need more than a pair of trunks. You’re also going to need accessories, equipment, and maybe some toys. What boy, of any age, doesn’t love his toys?

Hey, you there! Yes, you. I know what you’re thinking, but it’s not true. Well, I suppose you’d have that same silly grin if I had titled this post “She Bop.”
I love exploring sims that showcase builds and other creative work by Japanese designers. Whether it’s clothing at Back and Forth, jewelry and accessories by Yukirei Greene, hair at Zero Style, or skins, hair and clothing at Z#road Men’s Shop, the design work often reflects the influences of both historical and contemporary Japanese culture as well as anime, manga and other forms of art. There’s a unique sensibility and a distinct “feel” to much of the design work by members of the Japanese community in SL. I find it appealing, refreshing, and just…fun. (more…)

Free to a good home–one kittyboy, male (natch), unaltered, house trained, occasionally sulky. Good sense of humor, Protestant work ethic, has his own wardrobe. Affectionate but kind of a handful. Answers when he feels like it to Ryan and Hey Dumbass. Call after 6pm SLT.
I love it when an outfit comes together. I started with the fab new “Deadman Walking” layered jacket by Juwan Lane, because once I tried it on I realized I didn’t want to take it off–maybe ever. (I then realized I couldn’t think of anything that completed the look and felt “right”…but more on that in a moment.) The lovingly detailed jacket has gorgeous, almost velvety-looking fabric texture all around and big, bold artwork in back. I’m also wearing the optional “puffer” shirt, which fills out the sleeves and adds just a little bulk. The jacket’s shading is neither male- nor female-specific, and the prim collar with flexi tie is included in both male and female versions. I found that the tie called for some non-trivial but not terribly difficult adjustment via Edit Linked Parts, so the tie wouldn’t poke through to the inside of the collar. Permissions are Modify / Copy / No Transfer. Juwan’s layered jackets are available in five different styles (L$200 each) at Ju Ju’s Closet (HollandCoast 2 65, 188, 32).

It was a dark and stormy night when the taxi dropped me off at the high iron gates of Miskatonic University, at Arkham, Massachusetts. The driver seemed nervously distracted and sped away quickly into the darkness after unceremoniously hurling my heavy bags to the curb, but not, I noticed, without first grimacing in apparent annoyance at the paucity of the tip I had given him. I am, after all, a struggling student—now officially so—and as a consequence I must carefully mind my budgetary expenditures. (more…)

Although I certainly have my steampunk, goth and grunge leanings, contemporary casual menswear is still a staple in my wardrobe. Designer Scherina Montgomery is doing some fairly impressive design work in this arena. These items, recently released at Sc Design, are today’s case in point. For me, one of the fun things about designs like this is that they’re often non-specific enough, stylistically speaking, to mix it up successfully with other, more obviously “genre” gear. Today I’ve thrown together a kind of bad-boy emo-neko grunge-kitty look that I think kind of works. Come on, it’s fun, try it! You know you want to.
Scherina’s “Steve” shirts have the look and lines of a classic polo, and I know what you’re thinking–everybody’s got polos, they’re a dime a dozen. Look closely, though, and you’ll see that the front buttons run full length, not just two or three at the collar. The pattern of horizontal stripes is an eye-grabber, and eight different color combos are available. I was apparently feeling the monochromatic thing and ultimately restricted myself to shades of grey, but you can also choose from some brighter colors. These shirts are priced at L$99 for singles, which includes tucked and untucked versions on various clothing layers. Two different packs of shirts in four color combos are also available for L$299 each. The “Billy” shorts (available in Grey and Blue Washed) are just L$59 each. Note the “accidentally” undone top button. (more…)

Designer Shinichi Mathy described himself to me as “a newcomer to the SL fahion scene.” He may have arrived relatively recently, but I hope he sticks around for a while. His shop SHIKI presents a generous collection of unabashedly colorful, breezy casual designs for men, and a handful of items for women. I’m pretty sure the shop was redesigned within the last few days–it had a completely different layout when I made a quick last-minute visit last night. Things do come and go so quickly around here.
Although I’m not featuring them here today, you’ll also find a few decidedly informal suits…perhaps just the thing for a summer garden party or evening cocktail cruise. The pieces I’m wearing here are just a small selection from Shinichi’s Spring and Summer ’08 collections. (more…)

Now, I don’t mean “guywear” in the sense that it’s clothing Lloyd Dobler would wear. (“The world is full of guys. Don’t be a guy. Be a man.”) It’s just that “menswear” seemed somehow not quite right here. Yes, I’m making it up as I go along. Anyway, Lloyd might well wear some of this stuff. I’m thinking by the end of the movie.
I seem to recall that Garbage Prototype had dropped one or two vague hints during the two months or so it took him to redesign and rebuild his shop and completely revamp his clothing and body lines for men and women. I think he just likes to tease like that. This is the kind of thing that just nags away at me from the back of my brain, kind of like my mother, or my conscience if I had one, or the approach of Christmas when I was a kid. I had also visited his website and seen his teaser video, so I knew that interesting things were afoot at the Circle-K. When he finally said, “Okay, I’m not ready to open yet, but come and take a look if you want to!”–I most definitely wanted to.
I honestly don’t know what my expectations were. I didn’t expect the shop’s casually elegant atmosphere to so slyly reflect Garbage’s creative approach. I know that I was surprised by some of the designs–wow, Garbage did a suit?–and impressed by the range of items and choice of colors. As a collection it felt focused, consistent, and very much an expression of a designer’s vision. I couldn’t wait to pick his brain. (more…)

“They say the city of Kalico was once an industrial hub, where most people in the country congregated, worked, and lived. I, personally, find that extremely damn hard to believe anyone came to this city because they wanted to. They came because they had to. They came because everything was here. Everywhere else had nothing! Nothing at all! It’s like someone decided to slap every technological, social, and business aspect of living into one giant concrete hell. We don’t know much about what life was like before ‘it’ happened, but we definitely know what ‘it’ is. Everyone does. It’s the stuff of stories that parents would tell their little kittens so that they would sleep at night. But ‘it’ definitely happened, and ‘it’ destroyed everything.” – So begins the roleplay info notecard for Kenny Sleeper’s new-and-in-progress “Kalico City.” I was familiar with some of Kenny’s emo/neko/punk designs from his shop Kalico Kreations, and Aidan featured some of his designs in a previous post, but his new venture sounded intriguing (although I find I don’t have enough time to devote the amount that serious RP calls for). When he mentioned that he had also been creating some new designs so players can trick themselves out in style, it was clear that a visit to Kalico City was called for. Who knew what grungy, post-apocalyptic wonders would await? (more…)

The weather where I live in RL has been what might be called “unseasonably warm”–I think it was supposed to be 85F today, and it’s still winter, at least technically, for another couple of weeks. Just so you’ll know, when I’m dressing more realistically for SL (as opposed to indulging my steampunk fetish or trying out other fantasy wear), I tend to lean toward things that would be appropriate for the current RL season and weather where I am. Given the recent uptick in temperatures, I was happy to see the new Clash Shorts by serjordan Bonetto of Emery. These are crisply textured and very casual, with plenty of folds and wrinkles–why iron if you’re just going hiking? Rolled cuffs add some dimension, and the prim side pockets have interesting tab-and-buckle detailing. You can get them in four subtle colors: Blue, Brown, Green, and Grey. Same great style in a fancy new box.
It’s no secret. For several weeks Truth Hawks has been on the move to redesign the vibe of his branding. According to his philosophy, phase one was the logo change and phase two is the grand redesign of his headquarters. He has made a conscious effort to break away from initial inspirations for TRUTH Designs.
Just over a week ago the guru of casual fashions invited me down into the lush Odessa Luxurious sim to take a sneak peak at his new fashion house, which has been designed in monumental beachfront style by architect Bethany Heart and scripter Echo Seigo of EB Creations who expertly create anything from homes and stores to entire sims.
The build includes a runway stage with a flashing spotlight effect on the entrance curtains, dark mahogany accents and subdued wall texturing with dramatic lighting effects throughout. The composition utilizes clean, simple lines and detailed texturing to create an atmosphere that exudes a sense of luxury closer to the equator. It’s classy yet casual – just like the goods found within. Bethany endeavoured to make Truth’s vision of an edgy, sexy and chic store materialize into an edifice fully deserving of the brand’s existing and future offerings. (more…)

I’ll keep this short and sweet. This week marked the appearance of some really fun, satirical and all around distinguished articles on the men’s fashion scene. Being a joker-at-heart, as soon as I saw Gadget Gobo and Caroline Apollo’s comical devices I ran down to their stores to take a peek for myself – laughing all the way. Sometimes we all need a little ludicrously funny distraction for our wardrobes. As always designers for all categories of items put out primo content whether you seek the ludicrous or the distinguished that we just can’t help but share with the masses.
While chasing answers to a reader inquiry I had the great fortune to stumble across a skin which may be something worth investigating for those looking for a non-athletic touch.
Dive in and see if there’s something within that suits your tastes.

The very talented Catero Revolution started the review of the first and brand new men’s collection from Paper Couture. I take the relay for the following!
I was dragged in the Paper Couture’s shop by my dear friend and favourite stylist Iumi Cline. She wanted to show me the first Lu sisters’ release for men, and also to play doll with my avie. Girls
The shop at Tableau is delicately designed and deliciously early 20th century styled. This was the first good surprise. The picture of the Lu sister above the big stairs gives the tone: women of taste with a strong personality. Just like the new spring-summer 2007 collection for men! The clothes are hanging, just like in a real boutique. There is space to walk around and to easily use the camera. The music stream broadcasts classical music (where in SL do you find a shop with a classical music’s stream?). One of the best shopping experiences I had in SL. Omg, time to start, let’s try those new outfits, I can’t wait! (more…)

I wear cargo shorts a lot in RL. I live in Los Angeles, so that means from spring, all through summer, and well into fall. They’re quick, they’re comfortable, all the pockets are handy, and they can be more than reasonably attractive and stylish. I have a lot more clothing options in SL than I do in RL, but still…good cargos are a must. Dragontat Zagato recently released these at Desert Moon Clothiers , and they’re well worth checking out. Late last week at Stellar Designs, I noticed these spiff new Messenger Shorts from designer Lexi Morgan. These are perfect for the warmer spring weather that’s starting to sneak up on us, at leastin some parts of the world. They come to about mid-calf, so the cuffs won’t get caught in your bicycle chain as you zip around town on important business or get wet when you go surf-walking at the beach.
The plaid pattern is eye-catching without being too busy, and makes for a nice change of pace from the solid colors shorts always seem tocome in. I think these look great with a simple tank, tee or other casual shirt and sandals or sneakers–you may have other great ideas, so feel free to innovate. Although if you manage to make these work with anything involving a bow tie, I’ll be surprised and impressed. And I’ll want to see pictures.

For those suffering from an unwanted “limp wrist” syndrome, Last Call has concocted an effective Rx guaranteed to stiffen those radiocarpal joints. In a recent release of outdoorsy and street savvy gear designed to stroke your sense of machismo, LC provides you with clothes you can be confident in while chopping wood, whitewater rafting, or simply walking your bull mastiffs through the park in.
Boardwalk (275L). Take yourself off the beaten path with these plaid cargo shorts with toggle-tied prim pockets and vintage flecked t-shirt. A nice casual alternative to classic denim, Boardwalk may be ideal for the frat boy or outdoors man looking to throw back a few beers in the woods.
The tee is offered in untucked and half-tucked versions – the latter adding a nice twist that meets the usual tucked and untucked shirt options at a happy medium. With the screened graphics on its reverse the shirt is reminiscent of a memento picked up in remembrance of one’s travels. The plaid patterning of the long shorts lends itself to an air of sophistication. All-in-all the outfit is created for a look of comfort paired with a carefree style.
Pictured left in original colours, Boardwalk is also available in berry stain, jungle, noticed, steel and ultramarine. (more…)

I hadn’t stopped by Little Rebel Designs in a while, and when I got there the other day I saw that, as usual, designer Jonquille Noir has a selection of new items handily available right at the front ofthe Men’s section. What really caught my eye were these Stripe Spring Shirts and Safari Shorts. From the first warm day of spring (or late winter) through the last bearable day of autumn, my RL wardrobe pretty much consists of cargo shorts, lightweight shirts and sandals. Boring? Maybe, but so comfortable. I do try for morevariety in SL, but still…the weather’s changing and who wears a suit out on a hike, anyway? Here I’m wearing the Stripe Spring Shirt in Sand and Safari Shorts in Green. (more…)

You may have seen Celebrity’s post over at Second Style earlier today about Storma Amarula’s upcoming release Saturday at 12:01am at midnight Sunday/Monday (postponed 24 hours due to the grid downtime). She is moving the popular X2 brand to a mega store on the newly created Exotica Island and coordinating it with the release of a bunch of new stuff.
Storma contacted me earlier in the week and gave me a preview of her new X2: Exotica male Hyperfusion skins, as well as the Urban Warrior clothing bundle. Along with the Urban Warrior comes a set of brand new Wet Ikon geek toys from the uber-talented Francis Chung.
I had hoped to post this sooner, Storma mentioned she might have had a few more outfit previews for me, but I guess she was too busy getting ready
Update: Storma passed me whole bunch of preview stuff just before I went to bed last night. I was going to post some pictures this morning, but of course the grid is down. Suffice it to say there are some great baseball tees, collared shirts, and a western style that I saw quickly, among some others. Update 2: The pictures of these new items have been added above. The descriptions are after the jump. (more…)

First off, a thank-you shout out to Sean for turning me on to this great casual beachwear for men at Nicky Ree’s Boutique, at Plush Lambda 152, 21, 22. (The main store in Plush Lambda is pretty large, and men’s items are also available at the smaller store at Dublin 58, 222, 26, which may be easier to shop in.) If you’re looking for something new and fun to wear to that upcoming tiki party, look no further! These color-coordinated Batik-design outfits include a short-sleeved shirt, pants, long swim shorts, and swim trunks. They are available in seven colors (red, purple, blue, brown, grey, blue-grey, and green) for a very reasonable L$200 per set. The design artwork is very nicely done, and all the clothing pieces have a great casual feel. (more…)

As I sit writing this in RL, it’s a gloomy, drizzly day outside, apparenly the first day of fall before summer is even properly over. I had to run back inside for my umbrella as I was leaving for work. Blah.
Enough of that. As Nick pointed out to me the other day, “Dude…it’s always summer in SL.” And of course he’s right. With that established, I want to let you know about some great new board shorts I picked up the other day. You’ll probably find me sunning on some SL beach in these after I get home from work tonight, even if it’s pouring down rain outside in RL. Ah, escapism…
