Life in the big city

You meet the most interesting people when you take public transportation. Traveling by bus is always at least a potential adventure, and trains are both fun and fascinating, but subways are almost an ecosystem all their own. Maybe it’s the whole underground thing—it effectively separates and distances you from life on the surface, and with nothing to see outside the windows except the station stops, the city above retreats into mind and memory and ceases to be a presence. At least until you exit and return to the surface. (more…)

Hard-working suits at Subversion

LTHOUGH MANY OF HIS OTHER products are not aimed at all of us, men of any orientation should know about and probably own some of Prynce Llewellyn‘s finely composed and hard-working suits. These are strongly-styled but structurally simple suits, with no fussy prim attachments but plenty of layers and options.

Tweed Suit is probably my favourite. Wear it with a retro, pale matching sweater, or a traditional white button-down shirt. Wear the shirt with the collar buttoned or unbuttoned or with a necktie of matching colour. Everything just matches, everything just works. (more…)

I double dog dare ya

Every once in a while, my inner kitty wants to get out and play.

He has different moods. Mostly he’s friendly and playful, but sometimes he’s territorial and defensive. Once in a blue moon, usually after he’s watched “X-Men” yet again, he’s bold and aggressive. You might even call him scrappy. You’d definitely want to watch out for the claws. (more…)

David Suit at Eros Designs

a crazily optimistic statement about our self-understanding as human beings. That an artist like Keth Mommsen puts the effort and energy into designing virtual clothing as distinguished and elegant as her ‘David’ suit for men, and that apparently there are now enough men who value such quality to make these efforts rewarding, warms my analogue heart.

It’s a black tux, there are no grey or white or brown versions. And the shirt is always white. But there is a veritable rainbow of colours of vest and matching cravat ties. Oh, and what ties. It was the cravat that made David a must-own for me. Rich, extravagant bunched fabric, almost more a scarf but tied like a tie; lovely! (more…)

Dress Shirts at Connors

HREE WORDS about ConnorsDress Shirts, gentle reader: Consider the Fatpack.

I mean, just look at the fabric of Dress Shirt in Navy. The pattern of light and shade is beautiful in itself, but where there is light, you can almost see each thread in the weave. And the jewel-like depth of the colour blue is nothing short of delicious.

It’s summer here in Europe, so the shirt being so unbuttoned isn’t worrying me. But don’t let the irony pass you by. This is a dress shirt, but made to be worn in the most comfortable and casual way.

Now prepare yourself for a surprise and the reason for my advice about the fatpack. (more…)

Breathe deep the gathering gloom

It’s unlikely (although just barely possible) that you require an introduction to Lapointe & Bastchild, the collaborative goth brand by Paul Lapointe and Bastchild Lotus. After all, the brand has been around since, oh, somewhere around forever in SL terms. Why, even I myself have worn the occasional L&B design, whether shoes, jewelry or what have you. But woe unto me—for whatever reason or combination of reasons, before now I haven’t shown off any full outfits or significant clothing items. It’s more than past time for me to correct this error in my ways. (more…)

Kaine & Karnal Shirts at Flavor

or me to wear a shirt on top rather than a jacket or coat, it has to be special. I found just such a shirt at Traken Damone‘s shop Flavor: this is Kaine button-up shirt in Gold.

The styling is good and the prim pieces fit even my unusual shape, which is always a relief. But it is particularly the richness of the colours that makes this shirt so special to me. It’s called gold, but the rich earthy browns and soaring sky blue highlights are spectacular.

Kaine is also available with other designs, ranging from innocuous broad appeal like the deep dark violet Kaine Celt, or nearly oriental flower “Kaine Blood” in dark maroon and black, to the manga-drawn Kaine Guns and Lovecraft-esque Kaine Mech. (more…)

Glorious excess

I’m fairly certain I’ve said here before that I could wear clothing by risey Arai exclusively for the rest of my second life, and be perfectly happy. risey’s designs for :sey are so realistic, accomplished and comfortable-looking that there’s something not just to admire but to love in every one. I’ve featured my share (or more) of his creations here in the past, including some that are all of the above and sexy as well. This time out, I’ve got not just one but (count ‘em!) five shirts, jackets and hoodies, each of which is all but impossible to resist. This may seem like overkill, but I prefer to consider it abundance. If it’s excessive, it’s a glorious excess. (more…)

The whole of creation in one syllable

One of the many things I like about SL is the opportunity it provides to explore, albeit virtually and to a necessarily limited extent, aspects of cultures other than one’s own. Like me, you probably have several favorite places to visit in SL, and I’m willing to bet that at least some of them don’t look like your RL neighborhood.  Perhaps you like Paris in springtime, Barcelona in the fall, or the dark side of the Moon.  A recent series of more-or-less random TP hops brought me to a fairly impressive replica of the Taj Mahal, and I was inspired to outfit my avatar appropriately for a return visit. An almost perfect place

He had traveled much of the world, enough (he was confident) that his opinion could be considered an informed one.  He had seen much of what there was to be seen, stood and walked in places few men had ventured, and eaten foods that most could not begin to imagine.  He had visited places beautiful and forbidding, civilized and savage, welcoming and hostile.  It was difficult if not all but impossible to surprise him.  Imagine, then, his astonishment when he stepped off the boat at Adelaide, onto the dock, and into Paradise. Bad kitty! Bad! Bad!

naughty_kitty.jpgWell, I had pretty much zero luck a while back when I tried selling myself off, or at least adopting myself out, with the pathetic kitty look.  I thought it was surefire, a complete no-brainer, but no such luck.  Oh sure, a few people made offers in the comments, but did anyone ever come through with anything real?  I’m talking about money, houses, gourmet caviar and gold-plated, diamond-studded scratching posts here, not just a litterbox in the corner.  I figured anyone and everyone would love a sad kitty.  Hey, it works for puppies, right?  So where and how had I gone so wrong?  I resolved that I would figure this out or cry trying. Old and New at Baiastice

Nathaniel1.jpgithin the last week or two, Italian designer Sissy Pessoa has brought in a wealth of new men’s shirts and trousers for summer. I’ll show you a few of those in a minute. First, though, let me tell you about my favourite outfit that’s been out for a while. This is Nathaniel Suit in blue from Baiastice. (As usual, click the picture to see the full-sized version.)

There’s something very casual about the cut of the jacket. And it doesn’t hurt that the material looks like denim, especially on the blue version. The light and colour play on the fabric wonderfully, making it a fascinating garment to look at. The trousers in particular win my admiration. Note that since they are low-waisted, a shirt that is only on the shirt- or undershirt-layer will leave a gap. Even wearing the jacket there’s a tiny triangle of a hole where the underlying layer shows through at the waist. But with the right shirt (here I’m wearing an Oxford from Schadenfreude), I find these are currently my favourite trousers. (more…)

High Collar Coat and Pinstripe Shirts at Laqroki

HighCollarCoat.jpgecause my avatar is unusually short and slight by SL standards, the growing trend of shirts and jackets to have prim cuffs, collars and lapels (sensible as it is to use 3D objects to represent parts of RL garments that are 3D) is unsettling. But in a few pieces, Winter DiPrima of Laqroki has managed to create prim-based collars that work — at least for me.

Buying myself garments with important sections that are prims is a form of gambling. Laqroki‘s High Collar Coat in Navy Blue was, my friends, the jackpot. It’s available in a range of colours, white, beige, grey, dark grey, military green and black, but the navy blue version seemed to me an exceptionally deep and beautiful hue. As well as the garment, given to us on undershirt, shirt and jacket layers, there is a prim skirt, prim sleeve details and the prim collar, which also adds the 3D pockets. All the pieces are tied together visually not only wtih the navy blue colouring, but also with some very distinctive large metal rings.

I have a lot of coats in my inventory, but High Collar Coat has got to be one of my two or three favourites. Much to my surprise, one of my favourite features is the collar, which is just a wee bit exagerrated… just a wee bit manga. What a brilliant piece of artistry. (more…)

Night and the city

bruised_outfit_dont_walk.jpg
It is a sad and unfortunate truth that things sometimes sit in my inventory for…a while…before I get to them.  There can be any number of reasons for this sad state of affairs.  Time, that’s a good one, or rather the lack thereof.  Forgetfulness is a classic—I forget how great something looked in the shop and it doesn’t come properly to mind when I notice it in the vast array of inventory folders.  Lack of organization, though, is the culprit far more often than not.  No matter how valiant my efforts to impose order upon the giant heap of chaos that is my inventory, like Sisyphus I face a never-ending, impossible task. When on earth

belial_collar_necktie.jpgBelial was one of the four crown princes of the Underworld—or was it seven?  He could never keep track—and his pride knew no bounds.  He was especially proud of his own appearance, metaphysical though it might be.  He was constantly tweaking and re-working his more fluid aspects, looking for he knew not what, at least not quite, but he was confident he would know it when he found it.  This fascination set him distinctly at odds with all the rest of the legions of Hell, who rarely if ever made changes to their settled appearance.  Even the Morning Star, Lucifer himself, seemed to have grown tired and jaded.  It had easily been a thousand years since he had last been seeing wearing the shining, supernaturally beautiful face that had made him so famous in Heaven, before the Fall.  And that, Belial was pretty sure, had been for a Samhain party or some other costume thing Persephone had put on. I do love me a bargain

holy_relic_uniform_full1.jpgBut hey, doesn’t everybody?  So I figure I’m not alone in that, not hardly.  Surely you yourself are fond of getting a good deal.  Here’s the thing:  there are any number of other great blogs that focus on the great freebies, dollarbies and other bargains you can find in SL.  As much as I like me a good bargain, bargains aren’t my main emphasis here.  That said, if as you’re reading this you’re thinking, “Well, I love bargains, I’m killer at finding them, and I wouldn’t mind writing about the ones I find”…hey, give me a shout.  We can do a deal, Mr. Bond!  Today, though, I’ve got some great (I think they’re great) all-but-freebie items to show off.  I’m hoping at least one or two of them will entice you do a little low-budget, high-value shopping.

The items making up my various outfits are all (with some few exceptions) from Slanted Fox.  I’m sure I had visited Slanted Fox at some point in the past, but if I took anything home with me I’ve lost track of it somehow since then.  I forget exactly what I was searching for the other day, when I ended up visiting again, but I think the phrase “3L$ Store” jumped out at me from the search listings.  Apparently I must have clicked the link because there was a telltale whoosh, and next thing I knew I was in Harajukubox Town.  You know, sometimes stuff just happens, and all you can do is roll with it. Quilted Jacket and Ties at NY Couture

NYC1.jpg

OLOURED PIXELS MAPPED in deliberate patterns rush down optical cable to my computer, then somehow leap across the short distance from the screen through curved lenses and into my eyes. Rods and cones fire synapses along optic nerves to parts of this wetware brain that I don’t understand. I smile.

And somehow, art has happened.

It was my friend Chris who sent me the landmark to Charles2 McCaw’s “NY Couture.” And when I looked through the shop, there were a few things that caught my eye, things I’d not seen in other shops, things of colour – complex things that were simple things: things of artistry. (more…)

Rogues of New Babbage: Part the Second

vincent_full.jpgThe Dandy

His grandfather, Eustacio Babbage, had founded the great steamworks that had first allowed the great city of New Babbage to rise like a phoenix from the squalor of the grubby hamlet most now dismissed with no small contempt as Old Babbage, but which had then been simply Babbage.  He himself now ran that steamworks, greatly expanded since its initial construction, and was immensely proud of the fact that it provided the power that drove most of New Babbage.  Indeed, it was the steamworks that drove Industry itself and made life possible at their current impressive level of technological advancement, with all the accompanying creature comforts that the citizenry enjoyed so thoroughly. Rogues of New Babbage: Part the First

laurin_full.jpgThe Ruffian

The kid had earned something of a bad reputation for himself in New Babbage.  He supposed that was due in no small part to his tendency to, shall we say, not always pay for everything he put into his pockets on Market Day.  Also, quite possibly, the fact that, when he did make payment  in actual coin, that coin had not necessarily been earned by way of actual honest labor.  He rolled his eyes and sighed; such distinctions were boring and tedious, and they made him feel tired.  And they were pointless as well, when there was such fun to be had! Classic Jeans and Isis Shirts at Zaara

IsisOpening.jpgHESE ARE the thinking man’s version of the t-shirt and jeans ensemble: Isis Shirts and Classic Jeans from Zaara. There is, of course, a simplicity born of shallowness. But when you achieve simplicity through rich colour and intricacy of detail, you have arrived at intelligence. “Smart casual” indeed.

Zaara Kohime’s clothes and jewelry for women have always been full of grace, colour and hints of the exotic. The story goes that she created men’s versions of her hand drawn jeans after spotting males wandering the grid wearing the women’s version. Her small collection of men’s garments are very welcome. We can only hope that the range expands. (more…)

V-Day 2010

roller_boy.jpgWell, Valentine’s Day 2010 is shaping up to be a bit of a casual affair for me this year, in SL as well as RL-–I still don’t have RL dinner reservations!  (I know, I know.)  The very casual ensemble I’ve put together for your consideration isn’t exactly appropriate for an intimate dinner at a fine restaurant.  Think more romantic picnic in the park and you’ll be just fine.

The Grunge Tanktop and Flame Red Swim Trunks are both by Shinichi Mathy.  As always, fine fabric texture work is the hallmark of Shinichi’s garment designs, whether casual, dressy or more formal.  The busy print on the swim trunks helps the optional prim leg extensions to blend in better than they might in a solid color.  I did mod the taper of the prims just slightly to fit my fairly thin avie a little better.  These are the February 2010 Shiki group gift for guys.  You’ll need to join the Shiki group (if you aren’t already a member) and visit the shop Shiki 91, 153, 22 to pick up your gift.  Head down the red hallway (on your right as you walk down the main aisle) to the special Members Only area to find the gift vendors.  Available at Shiki Designs (Shiki 91, 153, 22). Jeans and tees? Seriously? Yeah, seriously.

hand_tee_leather_pants.jpgI get a fair bit of crap for how I largely ignore t-shirts and jeans.  It’s true—I don’t often give a lot of love to jeans and tees.  I honestly don’t mean to be elitist.  Most of the time—the vast majority, in fact—I think I’m completely justified in not paying particular attention to these particular staple wardrobe items.  For starters, you can find them pretty much anywhere and everywhere.  I don’t think I’ll run into much disagreement there.  Also, most guys are pretty good at picking out and picking up tees and jeans that suit their personality and budget.  I’m not sure they really need any help from me.  So, in general, I think my rule is a pretty good one.  That’s my story, and I’m sticking with it. nothing_067.jpgIn spite of my recent holiday foray into latex, this isn’t really an area I’ve explored in any depth.  As admirable as a lot of the design work is, it just doesn’t speak to me personally, and as a result I haven’t featured it here.  There’s no denying that there’s some quality work being done in the genre, though, and Nothing Quan kind of nudged (teased?) me to cover more…or rather, less.  I nudged right back and suggested that he bring his more extensive experience and expertise to bear on the topic.  The result is the sampling of specialty gear from Elixir you see before you today.  Open your mind, limber up your expectations, and feast your eyes!  I’ll let Nothing take it from here.  – Ryan (more…)

Outstanding in its field

sport_polo_mocca.jpgIt isn’t too unusual that I find myself impressed by a single clothing item or accessory.  In fact, the creativity and ingenuity of SL designers never ceases to amaze me—they constantly find ways around inherent limitations in the virtual world, and they manage to amaze and delight in spite of the technical ties that bind them.  Even so, it’s not often that I’m surprised and taken aback by something as seemingly basic and utilitarian as a polo shirt.  After all, aren’t they everywhere?  A dime a dozen, basically?  Well, yes…and no.

It’s nice to be surprised now and then. (more…)
