Dusting off the Old Inventory for Summer

Neko Gear Beach WearSo summer is in full swing for me. That means humidity and frequent thunder storms. But back home, on the other coast, summer means sun, beaches, and kicking back to relax and take care of things you forgot over the last few months. So I brushed the dust off my inventory and took a look at what freebies have been sitting there unused and untouched.

First off is a bit of beach wear from Neko Gear. This stuff is at least a good month old, gathering dust in my inventory as I’ve got way too much swim wear. Some of this stuff was covered by Adaire and Gecko over at free*style about a month ago. I’m wearing the beach towel freebie over my shoulder (you can lay it down too), along with a beach shirt, board shorts, and flip flops. I tend to avoid wearing logo branded freebies just because I don’t like being a walking advertisement, but the ones here aren’t that bad or overly flashy. They all kinda just fit together. Out of the box, the flips are a tad small but all of this stuff is modifiable and thus can be resized to fit rather easily. (more…)

Men’s Corner: RFL in style

rfl_2007.jpg
Chances are that you’ve at least heard of Relay For Life, the annual overnight fundraising walk benefiting the American Cancer Society. The event is designed to further awareness of cancer prevention, treatments and cures; to remember those who have been lost to cancer and celebrate survivors; and to raise money for ongoing cure research. The Second Life embodiment of this effort is Relay For Life of Second Life. In 2007, through the efforts of 40 teams RFL of SL raised a grand total of over L$118,000! (more…)

Taking it easy @ Sc Design

steve_grey_billy_grey.jpgAlthough I certainly have my steampunk, goth and grunge leanings, contemporary casual menswear is still a staple in my wardrobe.  Designer Scherina Montgomery is doing some fairly impressive design work in this arena.  These items, recently released at Sc Design, are today’s case in point.  For me, one of the fun things about designs like this is that they’re often non-specific enough, stylistically speaking, to mix it up successfully with other, more obviously “genre” gear.  Today I’ve thrown together a kind of bad-boy emo-neko grunge-kitty look that I think kind of works.  Come on, it’s fun, try it!  You know you want to.  ;)

steve_shirt_grey.jpgScherina’s “Steve” shirts have the look and lines of a classic polo, and I know what you’re thinking–everybody’s got polos, they’re a dime a dozen.  Look closely, though, and you’ll see that the front buttons run full length, not just two or three at the collar.  The pattern of horizontal stripes is an eye-grabber, and eight different color combos are available.  I was apparently feeling the monochromatic thing and ultimately restricted myself to shades of grey, but you can also choose from some brighter colors.  These shirts are priced at L$99 for singles, which includes tucked and untucked versions on various clothing layers.  Two different packs of shirts in four color combos are also available for L$299 each.  The “Billy” shorts (available in Grey and Blue Washed) are just L$59 each.  Note the “accidentally” undone top button. (more…)

[insert cool name]. Whoa.

[insert cool name] & naimaMy friend Itny told me to head to a store called [insert cool name] a while ago, but (as is usual) I forgot. She reminded again a few days ago, and this time I went right after she told me. I found a nice box of goodies there for 1L. Curious to see if I could find more, I checked through the group history and found a few more things. As I was busy poking around, I ran into Malte Antfarm, the owner of the store. Malte is a pretty nice guy, and we ended up talking for a bit. As I was talking to him, the topic of his next freebie came up.

I mentioned that guys tend to get plenty of shirts, but everything else is much less common. Therefore, why not make his next freebie a pair of pants? Sure enough, a day or two later, Malte dropped the shirt and pants I’m wearing here on the group. I’m pretty sure he mentioned that they’d be packaged in the box as well for when they age out of the archives. Anyway, enough back story, on to the clothes. (more…)

Hot town, summer in the city: SHIKI by Shinichi Mathy

bouquet_shirt_blue_denim.jpgDesigner Shinichi Mathy described himself to me as “a newcomer to the SL fahion scene.”  He may have arrived relatively recently, but I hope he sticks around for a while.  His shop SHIKI presents a generous collection of unabashedly colorful, breezy casual designs for men, and a handful of items for women.  I’m pretty sure the shop was redesigned within the last few days–it had a completely different layout when I made a quick last-minute visit last night.  Things do come and go so quickly around here.

Although I’m not featuring them here today, you’ll also find a few decidedly informal suits…perhaps just the thing for a summer garden party or evening cocktail cruise.  The pieces I’m wearing here are just a small selection from Shinichi’s Spring and Summer ‘08 collections. (more…)

Dressing as an Alphamale

Alphamale OutfitLast Sunday, rather early in the morning, I saw a notice for new freebies from Alphamale. The first thought that crossed my mind was, “Finally, took Yelmer long enough … the girls had some freebie lingerie months ago!” I had been waiting a while for this and I was quite excited. Normally, when I get notices from large groups about an item, I tend to wait an hour because fighting for a spot on a full sim isn’t worth it — you can just wait a bit and there will be no one around landing on your head, etc. But after waiting about 30 seconds, I thought “Screw the others, I want that freebie” and teleported in. Luckily for me, not a lot of people are on Sunday mornings and the sim wasn’t too too crowded.

After chatting it up with Yelmer a bit (for the record, Yelmer and Mariska are very nice people — if you see them at the store y’all should say hello) I head home and tried on the new clothes. The wait was definitely worth it. (more…)

Fashion Show Gift @ World of Beauty

I never covered these because I figured they’d be gone too quickly. However, 3 weeks later these dollarbie gifts are still around so head over there before they actually do get yanked. There’s a nice red top and green pants, as shown by my friends at free*style.

Box of Freebies at MadHouse 88

Madhouse 88 OutfitI honestly hadn’t heard of this store before I got a landmark by way of the Free*Style group notices a few weeks ago. I finally head in to the store and I must say I’m glad I did. First of all, the store is really cool. The build is excellent quality, and its just a nice place to look at. On top of that, there are cool-looking clothes that aren’t same stuff you find everyone else wearing. Who doesn’t like being special like that? On top of that, and more important for this post, the owner has been quite generous and has a box full of cool clothes so we can try out his stuff.

The hat, shirt, pants, and gloves are all from MadHouse 88. Lets start from the top. The hat is a close-fitting Jeep Cap and comes in three different colors: gray, green, and red. Its easiest to wear with no hair underneath, so a skin with hair drawn on would probably come in really handy. If you don’t have one, it covers enough of your head most people wouldn’t give it a second thought. Its relatively easy to resize so long as the top of your head is generally circular. (more…)

Ronin Jeans & Things @ WMD

jeans.jpgI don’t care how cut up they are, they’re currently my favourite pair of jeans and I’m going to wear them. They’ve got a lot of life left in them and they’re comfortable and they’re so London. The Union Jack on the front is ok, innit? But the London Underground logo on the back pocket is well bad. And I’ve washed the things so many times that the reds and blues are just faded enough. But the best part — you ready for this? — the best part of all is I can wear ‘em with anything. ‘Cos they’re actually two jeans in one. Low risers, for sure, you’ll see them in the other photos, but these are the high risers. Both in the same folder, pick whichever suits your top. Safe. They’re handmade for you by Maruko Sakigake of WMD — how can you not love a company named Weird Monkey Design? They come in lots of colours and designs; mine are Ronin London Edition; L$199 for the two pairs. There’s also a plain blue set for the special knock-down of L$50. Go get ‘em. (more…)

Just Another Freebie Sunday

Forgetful OutfitThe best part of being in contact with other freebie bloggers is that they remind you of items you’ve picked up and then totally forgotten. Half the stuff I’m wearing in this post have been available for a long time and been in my inventory for months, till I was reminded of them by seeing others wear them, mention them, or somehow remind me of them.

Gecko Gorilla, the new resident male freebie hunter at Free*Style, reminded me of my Amsterdam free shirt, the subscribomatic joining gift from Hoorenbeek. He wore the blue shirt so I decided I’d wear the brown shirt. I also seem to have a brown sports jacket from Hoorenbeek which I suspect came from either a sale or the subscribomatic, but I’m honestly not sure. If it was from the subscribomatic, I suspect its long been flushed from history. Either way, clicking on the sign still gets you two free shirts. Poking through the history will most definitely get you some notecards and perhaps a sports jacket. (more…)

Always chasing rainbows @ Mhaijik Things, SLAB

crono_polo_light_blue.jpgI have a confession to make: I haven’t been to a pride festival in a few years. It’s not that I don’t live in a city that has a large one every year–I live in Los Angeles, and L.A. Pride is one of the largest pride events in the U.S. (The 2008 festival was this past weekend, June 6, 7 and 8…and no, you wouldn’t have seen me there.) It’s not that I’m not proud–my friends would be the first to agree that excessive humbleness has never been my problem. ;) And it’s not that they aren’t fun–they certainly can be, I’m always up for a good time, and if you want to try your target marketing on me, knock yourself out.

I suppose you’d be justified in wondering if I’ve just gotten lazy, and can’t be bothered to turn out (so to speak). But I think it’s more that my life has simply become very domestic, and we like to stay home or just chill and hang out with friends. (more…)

Freebies from Rich People Stores

Rich Folk Outfit 1Remember me? For the few of you who do.. no I didn’t die. I’ve just been very busy with RL and then “relaxed” a bit with a week of summer vacation. My vacation isn’t quite over yet, but I felt that I had to cover some freebies that might disappear soon. My laptop’s onboard graphics aren’t good enough SL so I snuck onto a friend’s machine to install SL to snap a few pics for this post. Thus, this post is brought to you by my friend with no desktop password :P

Anyway, a long time ago I said that I couldn’t buy fancy clothes cuz I’m poor. Well, now a good number of those rich stores have freebies all in one spot: KMADD Enterprise. KMADD had a lot of gifts out from their opening, which disappeared a lil while back, before I could cover them (I hadn’t started blogging when they disappeared). Its not all bad though, because they replaced them with different gifts from a handful of the KMADD stores, including Tonic, Tango NY, Endeavor, Indigo, Redgrave, Mechanism, Mhaijik Things, SF Design, and of course MADesigns. Some of these things are not like the others

divinity_thermal.jpg…and yet they all belong.

Sometimes a guy just wants a new shirt or two.  It’s not that there’s nothing else to wear, or that the old ones suck now.  It’s just that there’s nothing else quite like a cool new shirt.  Tell me I’m wrong.  For today’s SL style outing, I’ve pulled together a double handful of new and newish shirts that might just do it for you, along with some great new hairstyles by Aemilia Case.

For starters, check out these thermal shirts by Zabitan Assia.  These have been out at FORM (and have been sitting in my inventory) for a little while now, but as usual I can’t get over the quality of the texture work and the subtlety of the imagery.  The design at left is called “Divinity,” and it prominently features an elaborate cross done in dusty, muted colors. Sumptuous leather coats @ NAIMA Fashion

roma_coat_brown_open.jpgI’m blaming Marcus for this one.  In fact, I so hold him responsible that I roped him into modeling for me…not, mind you, that I had to bully him, or even beg very hard.  It’s just that Marcus clearly knows my weaknesses, and when he dropped me a landmark and sent me an oh-so-innocent IM, I didn’t realize it but the hunt was on.  The bait in the trap he set for me was the Roma Leather Coats by Naiman Broome.  That Marcus is a devious one.

In fairness, it’s not exactly a deep, dark secret that I’ve got a thing for coats.  (Offered in evidence: links to just a few of my favorites.)  In addition to the gorgeously textured leather of the coat itself, Naiman has thoughtfully included components for several different wear options as well as some great accessory items.  The result is a coat with at least some of the flexibility of a real garment, with fewer limitations than you might expect. (more…)

Men’s Corner: The Great Outdoors

safari_outfit.jpg

The last few days, I’ve been hoping on and off (more on than off) that the “unseasonably warm” temperatures in my RL home city (Los Angeles) will return quickly to milder and more usual weather. Please, God, let the meteorologists be meaningfully right, just for once. I know it will be 110 Fahrenheit degrees plus in September, but right now it is quite frankly too damn early in the season for this nonsense. (more…)

So I Tried to Look Preppy

Valiant and UBUWavie Haller of Valiant has been getting a bit of press recently, and for good reason. He’s a bit of the new kid on the block in men’s fashion. Thing is, the new kids get older and wiser and he’s been no exception.

As part of the aging process, Wavie’s decided to retire a few of his earlier designs and offer them as freebies. That’s how I got my hands on the Relax Blue Shirt I’m wearing. There’s currently also a pink v-neck t and a light gray cardigan in the freebie bag, available on the front counter at his main store. These shirts all have tiny flaws, ranging from slightly mismatched seams to blurry edges, but most aren’t noticeable unless you stare. The only big complaint I had was over the length — most shirts were short even on the jacket layer. I had to dig a bit before I found the Brown D&G Pants to go with them. They’re from Jonquille Noir on the 3rd floor at GNUBie, in a pack of assorted Men’s clothing. (more…)

Muism Contest Entry Breakdown

Six String SamuraiEspecially now that I’m no longer in the competition, I figured why not discuss the “freebie” version of my entry to the Muism Contest. The majority of the items will of course come from Muism, but a bunch of others come from other spots.

To figure out what to wear, I decided to go through all the Muism freebies I’d collected over time. My first Muism product I ever tried on was their Xmas gift from last year, a red suit. I don’t get to wear that suit often enough. Next, I put on their racing jacket (which is still available, btw — it was recently added to the archives again). See, I told you it’d be handy in a costume :P .Anyway, I noticed a bit of a common trend — Muism seems to like red in freebies. Perhaps I’m (actually I know I am) taking a bad sample space, but I decided to try on a few other red things. (more…)

Brought to You Courtesy of Lucky Chair

Black Maria meets F.A.T.So, when I made that horribly long post a week or two back I said I’d hoped I hadn’t forgotten anything. I did. But don’t worry, forgetting made this post a lot better. I probably wasted just about all my luck on lucky chairs, but I managed to grab three E’s from two chairs in a span of 24 hours while I was at two stores.

So what I forgot was the Camo Tank from F.A.T. Designz that I picked up a few weeks ago. I only remembered the tank when I received a reminder that F.A.T. Designz was celebrating its first birthday with a weekend-long party. The part I find coolest is that the designer, Alfred Kabuki, has pushed his designs back into real life as well. Which means you can tell the real world what you do to the dj’s wife just like in SL. On top of having relatively reasonable prices (most products from my glance last weekend in the 80 to 110L range) the store also has a lucky chair and camper chairs for extra free stuff. Both switch between various products. I happened to see an “E” on the chair and received the RAW I pants when I checked to see if the tank was still out. (more…)

Retro Work Clothes @ Hell Bop

bobshirt.jpgLiterally as well as figuratively right next door to Artilleri, designer Floatie Hock’s Hell Bop Bar and Clothing Garage in Saimaa sells retro clothes at great prices.

My favourite has to be this olive-coloured shirt. Perfect for bowling, but without any wordy or cheesecake logos, just this screaming tiki figurine (click the photo to enlarge), the 1950s olive colour and broad black stripe up the middle. Superb. It’s called Bob Olive Shirt and it comes on shirt- and jacket-layers for only L$75. (more…)

New: Guywear @ Random Fashions

random_designs_new_shop.jpgNow, I don’t mean “guywear” in the sense that it’s clothing Lloyd Dobler would wear.  (”The world is full of guys.  Don’t be a guy.  Be a man.”)  It’s just that “menswear” seemed somehow not quite right here.  Yes, I’m making it up as I go along.  Anyway, Lloyd might well wear some of this stuff.  I’m thinking by the end of the movie.

I seem to recall that Garbage Prototype had dropped one or two vague hints during the two months or so it took him to redesign and rebuild his shop and completely revamp his clothing and body lines for men and women. I think he just likes to tease like that. This is the kind of thing that just nags away at me from the back of my brain, kind of like my mother, or my conscience if I had one, or the approach of Christmas when I was a kid. I had also visited his website and seen his teaser video, so I knew that interesting things were afoot at the Circle-K.  When he finally said, “Okay, I’m not ready to open yet, but come and take a look if you want to!”–I most definitely wanted to.

I honestly don’t know what my expectations were. I didn’t expect the shop’s casually elegant atmosphere to so slyly reflect Garbage’s creative approach. I know that I was surprised by some of the designs–wow, Garbage did a suit?–and impressed by the range of items and choice of colors. As a collection it felt focused, consistent, and very much an expression of a designer’s vision. I couldn’t wait to pick his brain. (more…)

Casual Browns @ Alphamale

wood.jpgThing is, sometimes you just want simple. Simple and comfortable. Simple and comfortable and quality. It’s the last one that’s often the difficulty. Understandably, great designers tend to tackle difficult things — complex pieces with many layers and brocades and stripes and often prim add-ons. And, yeah, we love ‘em. But sometimes, you just want simple.

So here’s a set. Alphamale is an up-and-coming shop, maybe even an up-market-and-coming-on-strong shop. Yelmer Pfeffer is the main alphamale and his partner, Mariska Simons, runs Blacklace next door. They’ve been up and running for months, but when I stopped in this week, they were going through an impressive and extensive remodelling and an expansion that included culling older pieces with which Yelmer was no longer satisfied. He was wearing some excellent blue jeans with a blue t-shirt. I turned immediately to the vendors but bought this colour instead. It’s a set they call, simply enough, Brown Jeans with Two Tees. And the contents are exactly as stated. (more…)

That Stuff Everyone Blogged About A Few Days Ago

Muism Made a Freebie JacketSo, Muism dropped a freebie. It’s been blogged a few times. Honestly, I don’t like it much. The flexi prim bottom to the jacket looks a bit weird. While the prims come in a few sizes and are modifiable, they are no mod and the collar and tail are linked, limiting the proportions of the item so there’s a chance you can’t fit them correctly. However — its a freebie, and beggars can’t be choosers. Maybe you’ll need it for a costume. Who knows? I’m wearing it with the sleeves rolled up, but you can wear it with sleeves rolled down as well. The non-prim part can be worn on the jacket or shirt layer. Grab it by joining the Muism group and looking in the archives.

Anyway, I’m wearing more than just the jacket. Under it I’m wearing a white tank from Draconic Kiss, available for free in the far back corner of the store. It comes in four colors: white, black, red and blue. There’s also a tshirt pack with the same colors too. The back corner seems like a discount corner in general, there is other stuff for relatively cheap back there. All are available on the shirt layer only, which limits their usefulness. However, they do fit under jackets in a pinch and are quite useful like that, and the price can’t be beat. (more…)

Review: Kalico Kreations by Kenny Sleeper

welcome_sign.jpg“They say the city of Kalico was once an industrial hub, where most people in the country congregated, worked, and lived.  I, personally, find that extremely damn hard to believe anyone came to this city because they wanted to.  They came because they had to.  They came because everything was here.  Everywhere else had nothing!  Nothing at all!  It’s like someone decided to slap every technological, social, and business aspect of living into one giant concrete hell.  We don’t know much about what life was like before ‘it’ happened, but we definitely know what ‘it’ is.  Everyone does.  It’s the stuff of stories that parents would tell their little kittens so that they would sleep at night.  But ‘it’ definitely happened, and ‘it’ destroyed everything.”  –  So begins the roleplay info notecard for Kenny Sleeper’s new-and-in-progress “Kalico City.”  I was familiar with some of Kenny’s emo/neko/punk designs from his shop Kalico Kreations, and Aidan featured some of his designs in a previous post, but his new venture sounded intriguing (although I find I don’t have enough time to devote the amount that serious RP calls for).  When he mentioned that he had also been creating some new designs so players can trick themselves out in style, it was clear that a visit to Kalico City was called for.  Who knew what grungy, post-apocalyptic wonders would await?
