Hard-working suits at Subversion

LTHOUGH MANY OF HIS OTHER products are not aimed at all of us, men of any orientation should know about and probably own some of Prynce Llewellyn‘s finely composed and hard-working suits. These are strongly-styled but structurally simple suits, with no fussy prim attachments but plenty of layers and options.

Tweed Suit is probably my favourite. Wear it with a retro, pale matching sweater, or a traditional white button-down shirt. Wear the shirt with the collar buttoned or unbuttoned or with a necktie of matching colour. Everything just matches, everything just works. (more…)

David Suit at Eros Designs

a crazily optimistic statement about our self-understanding as human beings. That an artist like Keth Mommsen puts the effort and energy into designing virtual clothing as distinguished and elegant as her ‘David’ suit for men, and that apparently there are now enough men who value such quality to make these efforts rewarding, warms my analogue heart.

It’s a black tux, there are no grey or white or brown versions. And the shirt is always white. But there is a veritable rainbow of colours of vest and matching cravat ties. Oh, and what ties. It was the cravat that made David a must-own for me. Rich, extravagant bunched fabric, almost more a scarf but tied like a tie; lovely! (more…)

Yukata and Kimono from Sweetaholic

WEET SWEET SIMPLICITY and sumptuous rich, detailed texture: this is what Asalt Eames offers at the Sweetaholic Kimono Shop. The owner and creator of both the Sweetaholic and grasp lines has created what might must be the garment in all of SL that best combines subtle elegance with comfort.

I refer to the Yukata number 04. Darkly luxurious, it is the reverse of ostentatious, and thus forms a paradox: the inky depth of black speaking of formality and gravity in such an informal garment. One is tempted to reply to one’s wisecracking friends “This is no bathrobe, it’s a Yukata,” except that, in Japanese, Yukata actually means “bathing clothes.”

But what a bathrobe! Up close, this is detailed and wonderful. The complex stripes and geometric designs in the fabric are very contemporary takes on traditional motifs and then there is the absolutely knockout enigma of a silver fleur-de-lis on a chain attacted to the obi (belt). There are, I’m told, similar symbols in many cultures, including Japanese. But it is so like the French representation. So beautiful, so perfect… yet… what in the world is it doing there? (more…)

Breathe deep the gathering gloom

It’s unlikely (although just barely possible) that you require an introduction to Lapointe & Bastchild, the collaborative goth brand by Paul Lapointe and Bastchild Lotus. After all, the brand has been around since, oh, somewhere around forever in SL terms. Why, even I myself have worn the occasional L&B design, whether shoes, jewelry or what have you. But woe unto me—for whatever reason or combination of reasons, before now I haven’t shown off any full outfits or significant clothing items. It’s more than past time for me to correct this error in my ways. (more…)

An almost perfect place

He had traveled much of the world, enough (he was confident) that his opinion could be considered an informed one.  He had seen much of what there was to be seen, stood and walked in places few men had ventured, and eaten foods that most could not begin to imagine.  He had visited places beautiful and forbidding, civilized and savage, welcoming and hostile.  It was difficult if not all but impossible to surprise him.  Imagine, then, his astonishment when he stepped off the boat at Adelaide, onto the dock, and into Paradise. Night and the city

bruised_outfit_dont_walk.jpg
It is a sad and unfortunate truth that things sometimes sit in my inventory for…a while…before I get to them.  There can be any number of reasons for this sad state of affairs.  Time, that’s a good one, or rather the lack thereof.  Forgetfulness is a classic—I forget how great something looked in the shop and it doesn’t come properly to mind when I notice it in the vast array of inventory folders.  Lack of organization, though, is the culprit far more often than not.  No matter how valiant my efforts to impose order upon the giant heap of chaos that is my inventory, like Sisyphus I face a never-ending, impossible task. When on earth

belial_collar_necktie.jpgBelial was one of the four crown princes of the Underworld—or was it seven?  He could never keep track—and his pride knew no bounds.  He was especially proud of his own appearance, metaphysical though it might be.  He was constantly tweaking and re-working his more fluid aspects, looking for he knew not what, at least not quite, but he was confident he would know it when he found it.  This fascination set him distinctly at odds with all the rest of the legions of Hell, who rarely if ever made changes to their settled appearance.  Even the Morning Star, Lucifer himself, seemed to have grown tired and jaded.  It had easily been a thousand years since he had last been seeing wearing the shining, supernaturally beautiful face that had made him so famous in Heaven, before the Fall.  And that, Belial was pretty sure, had been for a Samhain party or some other costume thing Persephone had put on. Bon Voyage Cybersuit at LeeZu

opening.jpgO SING THE BODY CYBERNETIC; to celebrate the electron winds that blow us into being. Spirit is wind, is wind not spirit? These packets of information slipping and zipping down cables to reassemble before my eyes, are they the body only? Or contain they the soul?

LeeZu Baxter has been creating beautiful and clever clothes for women, and a few for men, for a long time. When friend Harper Beresford blogged about LeeZu‘s new cybersuit, Bon Voyage, I rushed over the store to see if I could possibly wear it. The good news is that a men’s version was on the way. I do love me a bargain

holy_relic_uniform_full1.jpgBut hey, doesn’t everybody?  So I figure I’m not alone in that, not hardly.  Surely you yourself are fond of getting a good deal.  Here’s the thing:  there are any number of other great blogs that focus on the great freebies, dollarbies and other bargains you can find in SL.  As much as I like me a good bargain, bargains aren’t my main emphasis here.  That said, if as you’re reading this you’re thinking, “Well, I love bargains, I’m killer at finding them, and I wouldn’t mind writing about the ones I find”…hey, give me a shout.  We can do a deal, Mr. Bond!  Today, though, I’ve got some great (I think they’re great) all-but-freebie items to show off.  I’m hoping at least one or two of them will entice you do a little low-budget, high-value shopping.

The items making up my various outfits are all (with some few exceptions) from Slanted Fox.  I’m sure I had visited Slanted Fox at some point in the past, but if I took anything home with me I’ve lost track of it somehow since then.  I forget exactly what I was searching for the other day, when I ended up visiting again, but I think the phrase “3L$ Store” jumped out at me from the search listings.  Apparently I must have clicked the link because there was a telltale whoosh, and next thing I knew I was in Harajukubox Town.  You know, sometimes stuff just happens, and all you can do is roll with it. Rogues of New Babbage: Part the Second

vincent_full.jpgThe Dandy

His grandfather, Eustacio Babbage, had founded the great steamworks that had first allowed the great city of New Babbage to rise like a phoenix from the squalor of the grubby hamlet most now dismissed with no small contempt as Old Babbage, but which had then been simply Babbage.  He himself now ran that steamworks, greatly expanded since its initial construction, and was immensely proud of the fact that it provided the power that drove most of New Babbage.  Indeed, it was the steamworks that drove Industry itself and made life possible at their current impressive level of technological advancement, with all the accompanying creature comforts that the citizenry enjoyed so thoroughly. Rogues of New Babbage: Part the First

laurin_full.jpgThe Ruffian

The kid had earned something of a bad reputation for himself in New Babbage.  He supposed that was due in no small part to his tendency to, shall we say, not always pay for everything he put into his pockets on Market Day.  Also, quite possibly, the fact that, when he did make payment  in actual coin, that coin had not necessarily been earned by way of actual honest labor.  He rolled his eyes and sighed; such distinctions were boring and tedious, and they made him feel tired.  And they were pointless as well, when there was such fun to be had! [Guest Style Consultant] : Nothing Quan

nothing_067.jpgIn spite of my recent holiday foray into latex, this isn’t really an area I’ve explored in any depth.  As admirable as a lot of the design work is, it just doesn’t speak to me personally, and as a result I haven’t featured it here.  There’s no denying that there’s some quality work being done in the genre, though, and Nothing Quan kind of nudged (teased?) me to cover more…or rather, less.  I nudged right back and suggested that he bring his more extensive experience and expertise to bear on the topic.  The result is the sampling of specialty gear from Elixir you see before you today.  Open your mind, limber up your expectations, and feast your eyes!  I’ll let Nothing take it from here.  – Ryan (more…)

Dressing for the after-party: My Philosophy (ahem)

after_hours_salmon.jpgI guess I’m getting a little ahead of myself here.  I have some beautiful formalwear to show you—possibilities for a highly dramatic New Year’s Eve party—but I thought that first I’d go directly to the after-party.  Do not pass Go, do not collect L$200.  Now, it’s understandable if you feel that the main event deserves most of your sartorial time, attention and budget.  But don’t make the mistake of thinking that what you wear to the after-party somehow matters less.  In its own way, it’s just as important.  You’re still making an impression, after all!  You can’t just throw on khakis and a polo and let it go at that.  (Jeans and a t-shirt can work, though…if they’re the right jeans and the right t-shirt.)  No, you still need to put some time, effort and attention into your after-party attire.  Don’t worry, though.  I’m here to help. Naughty? Or nice?

Santa Claus is coming to town!

naughty_santa_full.jpgYou’ve almost certainly heard the Christmas song “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.”  If you’re of a certain age, you probably remember well from the childhood the old Rankin-Bass holiday TV special of the same name.  What’s important here is Santa’s role as judge, jury and (metaphorical) executioner, at least as far as Christmas gifts are concerned.  Who wants a lump of coal in his stocking?

You do remember that key section of the lyrics, don’t you?  It actually sounds kind of scary, when you think about it.  I mean, what, Santa knows everything?  All the stuff I’ve done this year?  Even that one thing?  I only did that once, I swear.  Okay, two or three times.  But still, what happened to my right to privacy?  I still deserve presents, don’t I?  I’m a good boy, I am! Pea coats for winter at SF Design

pea_coat_close.jpgWow, where does the time go?  More importantly, where does it come from?  By which I mean, where can I get more?

As you can see, I haven’t been around all that much lately.  Believe me, it’s not for lack of wanting.  RL (work in particular, as I may have mentioned) has been kinda crazy, and of course it’s the holiday season, and there’s only so much time to go around…never quite enough, it seems.  I do have some good stuff I want to share with you, though–some coats and scarves, festive party attire, stuff like that–and I’m hoping to get in at least a small handful of posts between now and the end of the year.  They may be short and sweet, but hopefully you’ll still find something worth shopping for. Zero Warrior

xcross_white_winter_strap_pants.jpgHe did not know his own name.  It was an interesting conundrum, but neither entirely uncomfortable nor, it seemed, wholly unfamiliar.  He felt that he floated somehow in a peculiar limbo of personality.  He knew some things—what languages he spoke, what foods he enjoyed, that he had never known his parents—but little about his own self.

He did not know his own name, but he knew that he could fight.  His mind might be all but blank, but his sense memory was strong, and his body could do things he did not remember learning or training to do.  He felt his muscles tense and thrum as he moved, wanting to defend, yearning to engage, aching to attack.  He pitied the ill-advised fool who attempted to draw him into conflict; his day would not end well. Tod Browning’s freak you was

Some time back, blog reader Miron Jarman emailed to me some pictures of himself in truly fabulous glam-rock drag—it was oh so very “Velvet Goldmine.”  He suggested that this look might be worth exploring for presentation here, and in true Lazy Ryan fashion I tried to recruit him for the mission.  In all honesty, he had done such a good job with his own look that I felt he ought to present and take credit for it.  Unfortunately, although I tried my best, he simply wasn’t able to make that commitment at the time, and left the suggestion with me.  I felt like I couldn’t simply copy his look for myself, partly because it didn’t feel fair, partly because it wouldn’t be “me.”  I needed to do glam my own way. The battle lies far to the east

crusader_full.jpgI was just going to add this as a postscript to my previous Deadwool post, but at the last minute I decided that the design work here deserves its own notice, albeit a quick one.  It hasn’t been all that long, so you’ll no doubt remember that I was quite impressed by Masa Plympton’s Old West-inspired suits at Deadwool.  It turns out that Masa has been busier than I realized–the medieval clothing designs I mentioned just briefly are in fact now available inworld.  And they are no less impressive.  The Crusader Armour ensemble I’m wearing here is available in your choice of white, red and black, and due to the flexibility of its construction it can be worn in a variety of ways that actually approximates the wear of real clothing.  Each set includes tunic, leggings and gloves, plus a vast array of sculpted add-ons, including boots, belt, cape, greaves, chain mail armorhood and helmet.  No weapons are provided, but you do get a beautifully textured shield.  It appears to be actually useful for personal defense, and in fact has already taken a couple of arrows.  The set also includes an imposing Crusader shape, which I am wearing here, in part because I was lazy and it made everything just fit.  You’ll also find a similarly equipped but differently detailed set of Medieval Armour.  L$999 each.

Available at the Medieval Church at Deadwool (Isola Gavia 8, 141, 1714).  Beware the crumbling old structure doesn’t collapse on you!

An Elf in Summer

garden_flowers.jpg
Do you ever get a crazy question stuck in your head, and you just can’t shake it?  You know what I mean.  It’s usually an “I wonder” type of question, typically one with no readily apparent answer.  For a kid it may be, “I wonder why the sky is blue?”  Adults may venture into the philosophical with “How do they get all those clowns in that little clown car?”  And then there’s the eternal classic: “How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?”

Well, recently for me it was “I wonder how elves dress in summer?”  I know—it’s not exactly earth-shattering.  And yet…I really wondered.  How do elves dress, anyway, for say a summer picnic?  Or a cruise, maybe, or just business casual?  Try though I might, I just couldn’t shake it. (more…)

Further outside the box: Menlosophy [ii]

This post is Part II of my coverage of Menlosophy, designs by Amanda Bolero and ziamela Loon.  You can read Part I here.

chess_shirt_black.jpgOne of the more traditional Menlosophy designs is undoubtedly the Chess shirt.  When I say “traditional,” I don’t mean it as a slam–it’s not code for “conventional” or even ”old-fashioned”–and I mention it at all only because I’ve said so much in this context about getting outside the box.  This shirt may still have one sleeve inside the box, but it’s such a handsome design, in such a challenging fabric print, that I can’t help but love it.  The cut is flattering, and the tight check print is potentially problematic but done so well that it looks better than it has any right to do.  Sculpted collar and cuffs are pretty much de rigeur for dressy shirts these days, and many casual shirts as well.  Here the collar is casual but smart, with sharply creased edges and crisp points.  The cuffs are equally casual but softer, rounder, and they looked comfortably turned-up.  L$150. Outside the box: Menlosophy [i]

velvet_jacket_verde.jpgYou’ve heard it.  So have I.  People complain not just about the relative dearth of menswear designs in SL (in comparison to the vast selection available for women, and although I suffer no shortage of fine items to feature here I think this is still generally true), but about the “sameness” we often see as well.  (Sometimes it seems like everyone with Photoshop and a Wacom tablet has a shop selling jeans, tees and polos.)  They want something interesting, fresh, original–”outside the box.”  Hey, I’ve been known to join in that chorus myself.  I’m a big fan of contemporary casual clothing, too, but within that fairly broad category it seems like there should be more room for exploration.

With their new collection at Menlosophy, design partners Amanda Bolero and ziamela Loon push the envelope and stretch the boundaries more than just a bit.  Sure, much of the collection qualifies as “contemporary casual”–what’s not to love?–but few of any of the designs are simple or ordinary.  One of my favorite pieces is the Velvet jacket, shown here in Verde.  (more…)

What Would Vasean Do? : Rococo Couture @ Miau Haus

rococo_couture.jpgI don’t often get the chance to attend inworld fashion shows these days.  Largely that’s due to timing–a lot of these events seem to take place during my RL workday, which makes it impossible for me to attend.  It’s also my own SL availabiity, which is limited by RL commitments (I do have a real life, and striking the balance is an ongoing challenge).  Fashion shows are a lot of fun, but they can be something of a mixed bag in terms of “bang for the buck.”  It’s not that the designs aren’t worth seeing.  No, the problem for me is that the experience tends to be, shall we say, less than optimal.  Clothing textures can take so long to rez for me that I can’t really get a good look at the designs before the next model hits the catwalk, much less come away with any usable pictures.  This may be just the nature of the beast, but it really can be frustrating. Gothic Aristocracy: BlueBlood and The Black Canary

Thanks for the intro Ryan!

Greetings, gents and.. well.. gents! My name is Micheru Mathys, and I’m the newest writer for Men’s Second Style! This is my first review, so please be gentile. ;) Before I go into the clothing I’m reviewing, I’ll give a bit of background on myself, since I’m the new guy. I’m twenty eight, and I’ve been inside of Second Life since November of 2005. I’ve experienced a lot of awesome things here, and made friends that are more real than some of the real life people I know.

I work for a corporate entity known as Max March Industries, and I’m involved in metaversal branding. I’ve been involved in a number of businesses here in SL, and I’ve got a heavy wardrobe here of formal clothes for black tie events. My other primary styles are Gothic Aristocratic, upscale casual, and occasionally a good set of T-shirt and jeans. (more…)

Gangster of New York: “Elijah” @ INDI Designs

elijah_close_collar.jpgI happened to run into Oscar last night, still dressed as you see me here, and he said, “Oh, you look very Gangs of New York in that outfit.”  I responded with something like, “But hopefully less bloody.  And, frankly, less muddled and tedious.”  Sorry, Marty, but I thought it was kind of a mess…a glorious mess, but still.  Hey, I loved “The Age of Innocence”!

Oscar’s right, though: I do look like I’m either running dubious errands for Bill the Butcher, or on the run from him.  I may be no Leo, but in this outfit at least I’ve got some style.  This is “Elijah” by Jamie Holmer, recently released at INDI Designs.  Although they’re quite different in the details, Elijah reminds me more than a little of Shai’s Newsboy outfit–not in any particular detail, but in the spirit of the era it evokes.  While Shai’s newsboy ensemble delights with its youthful energy, to me Jamie’s outfit feels more mature, well suited for the former newsboy now older and working in his first apprenticeship.  Sadly, every boy grows up; every youth becomes a man.  The beauty of SL is that we can still go back at will, or whim, not just look back longingly from years down the road. Three’s Company: Shacking up with Devon, Epo & Aleri*

jonas_outfit_seated.jpgSometimes I’m just not sure what approach to take when I’m putting together an outfit or outfits for an article. I mean, putting outfits together obviously follows a certain basic process that doesn’t change much–clothing that makes for a certain look, shoes that play along nicely or even make a statement, maybe some jewelry or other accessories that tie it all together.  And there’s always the question of hair, and possibly a particular or even themed skin…but I digress.

So, anyway, yes, the process is pretty well defined, but for me the question is always, “What’s the hook?” By which I mean, What makes it special? Where’s the fun? What’s the challenge this time? What’s in it for me? (more…)

New: Boy Next Door @ MUWU

boy_next_door_brown.jpgYou’ve seen them everywhere you’ve ever lived.  Judy Garland immortalized them in 1944′s Meet Me in St. Louis.  Maybe, like Judy, you’ve wanted to make the acquaintance of one, or maybe you’ve wanted to be one.  In SL, all things are possible.  Namida Akami’s new “Boy Next Door” is a beautifully textured casual ensemble that can be worn in several different ways, so you’re not limited to a single “look.”  I’m a big fan of flexibility, and I appreciate it when designers create clothing that can be worn in ways that approximate RL clothing.  Don’t get me wrong–I don’t think that SL is all about recreating RL experiences in a virtual setting, although you can certainly do that and have fun.  Some of my favorite clothing and accessory items are designs that would be completely impossible in RL, or possible but completely unaffordable.  But there’s plenty of room in the world for realistic casual wear that’s also realistically flexible, and as I said, I’m a big fan.  :) (more…)

Newish: Track suits (no, really!) & sneaks

mia_tracksuit_long_sleeves.jpgI don’t know about you, but all that dressing up over Halloween took a lot out of me. As fun as it was, afterward I really just wanted to grab something easy and casual out of my virtual dresser drawer and throw it on. I reached in and, lucky for me, at the top of the pile I found these spiff new track suits by Donovan Brennen. Now, I understand if you’re smiling grimly and thinking, “Ahh, hmm, track suits…” with great skepticism. But hear me out, because really these just beg to be worn. You can choose from two different styles: “M.I.A.” in warm earth tones and “Zion,” in shades of blue and green. Each set includes a jacket that can be worn with long or rolled sleeves, plus matching pants. The jackets have sculpted turned-up collar and cuffs, and the pants have sculpted slouchie cuffs and a prim drawstring. (more…)

SchoolBoy @ SweetestGoodbye

SchoolBoy1.jpg

One attended a private school, of course, nothing so vulgar as going to an ordinary establishment of learning. Not for one and one’s friends the normal education — insipid, cliched quotations, incomplete sentences, and individuals who can’t detect the minute yet compelling differences between SL and RL. No; Latin, rugby and advanced studies were the order of the day. The food one received in halls was a disgrace, of course, but at least one was not distressed by one’s school uniforms, since they were beautfully designed by Morphine Janick of SweetestGoodbye.

One is here wearing SchoolBoy in Mint and Grey. The wonderful white trousers have prims that look like bunched up cuffs… because dear old ma-Ma wanted to give one lots of growing room. (more…)
