New: Men’s jewelry @ The Perfect Gift

compass_ring_bracelet.jpgYou may remember an announcement not too long ago regarding a quality freebie, a men’s bronze pendant necklace by dionysia Elytis.  At the time, dionysia was just starting to design jewelry for men, and we had some fascinating chats about men and their likes and dislikes.  Apparently I managed not to dissuade her entirely, as she has created a total of four different sets of matched jewelry pieces for men.

dionysia’s design approach is different from that of some other designers whose work I love–her pieces are simple and sturdy rather than delicate or elaborate.  The bold shapes allow her beautifully detailed textures to take center stage. (more…)

Designer: JHZ Store for Men

JHZ_01.jpgI’m back again, this time with a review of JHZ. JHZ is a small store that advertises as selling High Definition clothes for men. The style is somewhat urban with baggy, worn jeans and tight T shirts.

Some of the shirts they sell are branded with first life brand logos. I won’t cover these by blog policy. I’ll cover the jeans, some original t shirts and some layered tees though. The store also makes some accessories, of which I’m showing the bracelets in my review.

I’ll start with the jeans. The texture is quite ‘crispy’ and sharp. The only blurry area I saw on the jeans was around the crotch, but that was completely the fault of the SL mesh. I’m sure we’ve all seen how SL distorts baggy or loose clothing. Since the pants are modify enabled I fixed it for myself by lowering the crotch height from 33 to 15. (more…)

Building the perfect neko

neko_picnic.jpgI had a hell of a time finding a neko skin I liked.  I looked all around, asked people for recommendations, tried on demos like you wouldn’t believe.  My thing was, I wanted a skin that, kitty markings aside, would also look good as a skin on its own.  I wanted a skin that still left me looking like Ryan, but not Ryan turned feral.  What about neko tattoos? you may be wondering.  You’re right, some of those look very good, and of course the big plus is that you can wear them with your favorite skin.  This approach may well work for you.  But I wanted markings on my face, too, and what if I wanted to wear them with some specific clothing and I had a layer conflict?  What if I wanted to wear other tatoos?  What if I wanted to wear them with underwear?  (Nekos get nasty, too, you know.)  Maybe, if they came on all the clothing layers…  No, what I really wanted was a skin.  A really good neko skin. Blogger Style Throwdown: Afterhours Businessman under 2500L (vs. Oscar Page)

While Law was busy handing out favors and bribes for votes these past two weeks, I’ve been busy with yet another throwdown. This time I’m up against Oscar Page, a relative new guy on the block when it comes to blogging but who has been fashionable in SL for ages (2004, that is). (more…)

Day the First at Miskatonic U.

welcome_to_miskatonic.jpgIt was a dark and stormy night when the taxi dropped me off at the high iron gates of Miskatonic University, at Arkham, Massachusetts. The driver seemed nervously distracted and sped away quickly into the darkness after unceremoniously hurling my heavy bags to the curb, but not, I noticed, without first grimacing in apparent annoyance at the paucity of the tip I had given him. I am, after all, a struggling student—now officially so—and as a consequence I must carefully mind my budgetary expenditures. (more…)

Designer Review: Primitive Design

PD_Zipper.jpgPrimitive Design is one of those stores I’ve been familiar with for quite some time, and had on my list of places to review for nearly just as long. For some reason I’ve never gotten to it however, I should blame my lack of time in the past. A few days ago the creator Geyer Schnyder gave me a full tour of the store however after a mention of Ryan - and now here I am, finally writing the review I’ve been meaning to do for ages.

The store makes items of a grungy urban/street style. They sell pretty much everything you need for a full avatar, including skins since a few days ago. The skins are only available in two white skintones however, so I can’t review them. Luckily I’ll already have my hands full enough with the clothes and accessories.

I have put two full outfits together with the store’s items, and will show those in the review. There’s so much more for sale though that you should definitely check the place out. My goal here is to give you an idea of the designer’s work in general, so I’ll try to keep it as short as I can by not spending more than a paragraph on each individual item. (more…)

New: “Dysis” @ RFyre

dysis_full.jpgI wonder what it’s like inside the mind of Raven Pennyfeather? I imagine a vast, dimly lit chamber draped in heavy, dark velvet, with plush carpets underfoot. Great paned windows look out into the starry, starry night like inquisitive eyes. Scattered about are immense wooden chairs, elaborately carved and with deep upholstery, perfect for pausing to reflect on one of the many ideas that flit about quickly, glittering in the dark.

Or maybe this is just Raven’s design studio. It certainly seems that only such a place could possibly be origin to her outrageously elaborate gothic haute couture clothing designs. Her new ensemble for men is called “Dysis,” perhaps named after the Greek goddess of the hour of the sun’s setting. This would seem appropriate, perhaps on more levels than that most immediately obvious. (more…)

Casual elegance for summer:

Common Thread by meriwell Faddoul

threads_button_tee_green.jpgIf you’ve been searching for the perfect casual wardrobe for summer, you may need look no further than Common Thread by meriwell Faddoul.  I didn’t know what to expect when I made my first visit to meriwell’s shop, but the clean designs and gelato-bar color palette brought back memories of Don Johnson in “Miami Vice.”  In the best possible way, of course!

I’ll start with simple and classic.  The Threads Button Tee (L$100) has a button-up front, collar and chest logo, so for my money it’s more polo than tee.  I’m not going to quibble, though.  It’s available in a handful of colors, and shown here in Green and White.  Here and throughout I’m also wearing meriwell’s Light Linen Trousers (L$100).  The fabric has a delicate crosshatch texture, and meriwell mentioned that he left off the side seam because he preferred the softer, casual feel that provided.  Three styles are included: belted, unbelted, and tapered at the ankle for wear with sculpted cuffs. Always chasing rainbows @ Mhaijik Things, SLAB

crono_polo_light_blue.jpgI have a confession to make: I haven’t been to a pride festival in a few years. It’s not that I don’t live in a city that has a large one every year–I live in Los Angeles, and L.A. Pride is one of the largest pride events in the U.S. (The 2008 festival was this past weekend, June 6, 7 and 8…and no, you wouldn’t have seen me there.) It’s not that I’m not proud–my friends would be the first to agree that excessive humbleness has never been my problem. ;) And it’s not that they aren’t fun–they certainly can be, I’m always up for a good time, and if you want to try your target marketing on me, knock yourself out.

I suppose you’d be justified in wondering if I’ve just gotten lazy, and can’t be bothered to turn out (so to speak). But I think it’s more that my life has simply become very domestic, and we like to stay home or just chill and hang out with friends. (more…)

New: Celtic design rings @ Biju by Muna

cargan_black.jpgI love jewelry and other design work inspired by Celtic artwork.  In RL I wear an inexpensive silver ring, simply designed to resemble interlocking knotwork, that I bought from a street vendor in Dublin about four years ago.  One of the highlights of that trip to Ireland was a visit to Trinity College, where I was able to view two folios from the Book of Kells, the artwork of which still informs Celtic designs today.  Muna Arai’s new  line of rings for men honors that tradition by making inspired use of knotwork and other design elements in balance and harmony with the beauty of precious metals. Review: Kalico Kreations by Kenny Sleeper

welcome_sign.jpg“They say the city of Kalico was once an industrial hub, where most people in the country congregated, worked, and lived.  I, personally, find that extremely damn hard to believe anyone came to this city because they wanted to.  They came because they had to.  They came because everything was here.  Everywhere else had nothing!  Nothing at all!  It’s like someone decided to slap every technological, social, and business aspect of living into one giant concrete hell.  We don’t know much about what life was like before ‘it’ happened, but we definitely know what ‘it’ is.  Everyone does.  It’s the stuff of stories that parents would tell their little kittens so that they would sleep at night.  But ‘it’ definitely happened, and ‘it’ destroyed everything.”  –  So begins the roleplay info notecard for Kenny Sleeper’s new-and-in-progress “Kalico City.”  I was familiar with some of Kenny’s emo/neko/punk designs from his shop Kalico Kreations, and Aidan featured some of his designs in a previous post, but his new venture sounded intriguing (although I find I don’t have enough time to devote the amount that serious RP calls for).  When he mentioned that he had also been creating some new designs so players can trick themselves out in style, it was clear that a visit to Kalico City was called for.  Who knew what grungy, post-apocalyptic wonders would await? In Which I Cram As Much as I Can

Rahz II and RandomI’ve been having some recurring issues with my wrists of a late, so typing has become more of a pain. Therefore, I’ll let the pictures do more talking and minimally explain the relevant information. First off, I’m wearing a free sweater, scarf, and sunglasses from the Rahz II Store. There’s also a free necklace available there too. The store has a 50L sale going on where some of the items (often packs of 2 to 3 shirts) are sold for only 50L. It doesn’t apply to every item in the store though, so keep an eye on prices. The items are mod no copy so pick up a few and tint away. The hair is Sleek in “Faded Chestnut”, available for 1L from ETD. (more…)

What is Love?

Baby Don't Hurt Me...Phew.. Easter is over. Should be good till the next giant holiday.. is it Mother’s Day? Anyway, back to business as normal.. or business I forgot about because I was too busy egg hunting.

Adam n Eve recently opened a new boutique at Genesis for a line of high class fancy clothes. In order to celebrate the opening, sachi Vixen decided to put up two freebies — a polka dot dress for the ladies and polka dot shirt for the guys. Now when I saw the shirt the first thing that came to mind was disco. Unfortunately, I’m a bit too young to remember disco, so I decided to inspire myself with the closest thing I do know to ridiculous dancing and outfits — A Night at the Roxbury. More specifically, my speakers were thumping Haddaway for a half hour as I put this outfit together. (more…)

Elegant steampunk accessories by Pavig Lok

oculus_glasses_vintage_pocketwatch.jpgSerendipity makes me happy.

There I was, minding my own business the other night, and I can’t remember if I was bored or not but I was certainly open to adventure, or at least a diversion. So when I more or less idly asked Posy what she was doing, and she responded “Trying on some new glasses I bought, and there’s a beautiful pocket watch too!” I immediately said, “TP me? Please?” In short order I arrived at the small but handsomely appointed shop of Pavig Lok. Although Posy hadn’t gone into specifics, she knew that Pavig’s gorgeously detailed steampunk creations would be right up my forbidding Victorian alley. She’s a temptress that way. And she was right–Pavig’s vendors showcased some very intriguing glasses and a truly elegant pocket watch. I thought to myself, “I’ll have the lot!”

Little did I know that I would receive so much more than I expected, based on the unassuming advertising placards I saw in the shop. (more…)

Today’s forecast: casual, with touches of elegance

clash_shorts_outfit.jpgThe weather where I live in RL has been what might be called “unseasonably warm”–I think it was supposed to be 85F today, and it’s still winter, at least technically, for another couple of weeks.  Just so you’ll know, when I’m dressing more realistically for SL (as opposed to indulging my steampunk fetish or trying out other fantasy wear), I tend to lean toward things that would be appropriate for the current RL season and weather where I am.  Given the recent uptick in temperatures, I was happy to see the new Clash Shorts by serjordan Bonetto of Emery.  These are crisply textured and very casual, with plenty of folds and wrinkles–why iron if you’re just going hiking?  Rolled cuffs add some dimension, and the prim side pockets have interesting tab-and-buckle detailing.  You can get them in four subtle colors: Blue, Brown, Green, and Grey.  Permissions are Modify / No Copy / Transfer.  L$100 a pair at Emery (Quest III 155, 31, 22). Isn’t It Romantic? Part 2 - Eros Designs, JCS Shoes, Mhaijik Things

james_after_hours_full.jpgSince one round of Valentine’s Day-appropriate ideas seems hardly sufficient, I thought I’d share a few more suggestions with you.  Here’s hoping that one or more of these designs will fit into your romantic plans.  And remember–sometimes, something you buy for yourself is also a gift for some else…if you do it right.  ;)

Keth Mommsen’s “James After Hours” (L$150) is part of the “Signature Line” at Eros Designs.  It seems to be conceived and presented primarily as an add-on to the James Tuxedo (L$500), but it also stands on its own as great, inexpensive “after-party” formal attire. (more…)

Men’s Corner: Isn’t It Romantic?

charlatan_coat_white_full.jpgWhenever I heard the word “romantic” I am immediately reminded of a scene in the movie “Moonstruck.” You know the scene—where Raymond Capomaggi, still madly in love with his wife Rita after many years together and apparently all but undone by the lovers’ moon that seems to be influencing everyone in sight, sings aloud a snippet of Rogers and Hart’s “Isn’t It Romantic?” Apparently, he was a tiger last night. ;)

One thing we can take away from this delightful moment is that romance is not the exclusive province of the young and beautiful—anyone can be romantic. Maybe this is a bit of a stretch, but I think this also suggests that dressing romantically doesn’t just mean lipstick-kissed boxer briefs (not that there’s anything wrong with that)—it can be anything that represents an effort to connect to your significant other and make something special happen for both of you. New: Winter vest, belt, jewelry by Yukirei Greene

winter_down_vest_black.jpgMy home sim hates me. I don’t mean the estate region I live in; I mean the simulator hardware that runs it. I think it really hates me, and I’m pretty sure it’s because of the high-prim-count accessories I love so much. Sometimes I think I can feel it chug and grind as I click to put on a 200-prim hairstyle. It’s a terrible thing to be so vain. I don’t blame the designers–this failing is all mine, and I take full responsibility. After all, they only create their primtastic masterpieces; I decide on my own to wear them, nobody holds a scripted gun to my virtual head. That said, some of the “worst offenders” (in a good way) in my inventory are jewelry and accessories by Yukirei Greene. Even her apparently simple designs tend to be highly complex upon close inspection: chains are made of dozens if not hundreds of minuscule prim links; what might be highly detailed 2-D textures turn out to be “inlays” of tiny prims. You get the idea. (more…)

Last Chance @ Last Call, Moderno

It’s very much with mixed feelings that I share the following sale announcement.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. SL Time on Friday, 11 January 2008, all items created by Ginny Talamasca, Katterina Dagostino and Devyn Carmichael went on final sale for L$100 each.  Permissions for all items are now Modify / No Copy / Transfer.  All items will be permanently retired at the conclusion of the sale, which will run for approximately one month, possibly longer if demand permits.  (Details are according to entries on the Last Call website.)

Chances are you have heard about the sudden and unexpected passing in late 2007 of one of the two partners who together were Ginny Talamasca.  (The formal announcement can be found here.)  I don’t think it’s too great an exaggeration to use the phrase “end of an era” in attempting to describe what this means to the SL fashion world.  Ginny’s designs for women (those gowns!) were beautiful and distinctive.  The clothing lines for men were fascinating, striking and sometimes controversial.  It seems difficult to overstate the the importance of Ginny’s contributions.

I claim no special relationship with Ginny, in fact I met him only once, when I chatted with Devyn for about an hour for an interview.  What I remember most about our conversation was how passionate he was about the work, how invested in the creative process, and how much fun he was having, even in the midst of the craziness that was the Last Call grand opening.  It seems appropriate here to remember, appreciate and celebrate Ginny’s amazing clothing designs.  Whether or not you loved or wore all or any, you had to admire not only the items themselves but the care and passion that went into their creation. New: Seamaster watches @ SteinWerk

seamaster.jpgSometimes, I look at a new item, created with love and care by a gifted and talented designer, and it’s a moment of bliss.  Think of the exquisite detailing in shoes by Eponymous Trenchmouth, the velvety flow and fall of fabric in clothing by Shai Delacroix, the classic lines of a suit by Blaze Columbia.  This is rarefied company indeed, but the new “Seamaster” watch by Aveline Stein earns its place honestly and fits in beautifully.

seamaster_close.jpgThe Seamaster is meticulously crafted and constructed (171 detailed prims), and according to Aveline all textures were handmade in Photoshop.  In addition to showing the time (a must for me–sorry, I’m picky that way), the Seamaster features a working date window that adjusts correctly based on the selected timezone setting.  The list of additional features is lengthy, so I’ll mention just a few of the standouts.  An beep sounds the hour; you can adjust the sound volume or disable it entirely if you prefer.  A new “look at” animation makes your avatar look at the watch every hour or two, and can also be triggered as desired from the menu.  Two tasteful “bling” modes are provided, which you can use if you like, but the default bling setting is thoughtfully set to off.
