My affinity for “contemporary casual” clothing—and surely you know this about me by now—is both a gift and a curse. (In fact, I kind of hate the phrase itself. If anyone knows of or has come up with a better description, please please please let me get what I want…er, leave a comment!) It’s a gift because there’s a lot of it out there to choose from. It’s a curse because, let’s face it, a lot of what’s out there is sadly repetitive, derivative, unoriginal, ordinary, or just not very interesting. It was the fabulous fabulist Theodore Sturgeon who famously observed that “90% of everything is crap.” (Okay, what Ted actually said was “crud,” but I’m fond of the misquotation.) The challenge lies in the finding of the 10% that isn’t.

Every once in a while, my inner kitty wants to get out and play.
He has different moods. Mostly he’s friendly and playful, but sometimes he’s territorial and defensive. Once in a blue moon, usually after he’s watched “X-Men” yet again, he’s bold and aggressive. You might even call him scrappy. You’d definitely want to watch out for the claws. (more…)

But hey, doesn’t everybody? So I figure I’m not alone in that, not hardly. Surely you yourself are fond of getting a good deal. Here’s the thing: there are any number of other great blogs that focus on the great freebies, dollarbies and other bargains you can find in SL. As much as I like me a good bargain, bargains aren’t my main emphasis here. That said, if as you’re reading this you’re thinking, “Well, I love bargains, I’m killer at finding them, and I wouldn’t mind writing about the ones I find”…hey, give me a shout. We can do a deal, Mr. Bond! Today, though, I’ve got some great (I think they’re great) all-but-freebie items to show off. I’m hoping at least one or two of them will entice you do a little low-budget, high-value shopping.
The items making up my various outfits are all (with some few exceptions) from Slanted Fox. I’m sure I had visited Slanted Fox at some point in the past, but if I took anything home with me I’ve lost track of it somehow since then. I forget exactly what I was searching for the other day, when I ended up visiting again, but I think the phrase “3L$ Store” jumped out at me from the search listings. Apparently I must have clicked the link because there was a telltale whoosh, and next thing I knew I was in Harajukubox Town. You know, sometimes stuff just happens, and all you can do is roll with it. (more…)

Well, Valentine’s Day 2010 is shaping up to be a bit of a casual affair for me this year, in SL as well as RL-–I still don’t have RL dinner reservations! (I know, I know.) The very casual ensemble I’ve put together for your consideration isn’t exactly appropriate for an intimate dinner at a fine restaurant. Think more romantic picnic in the park and you’ll be just fine.
The Grunge Tanktop and Flame Red Swim Trunks are both by Shinichi Mathy. As always, fine fabric texture work is the hallmark of Shinichi’s garment designs, whether casual, dressy or more formal. The busy print on the swim trunks helps the optional prim leg extensions to blend in better than they might in a solid color. I did mod the taper of the prims just slightly to fit my fairly thin avie a little better. These are the February 2010 Shiki group gift for guys. You’ll need to join the Shiki group (if you aren’t already a member) and visit the shop Shiki 91, 153, 22 to pick up your gift. Head down the red hallway (on your right as you walk down the main aisle) to the special Members Only area to find the gift vendors. Available at Shiki Designs (Shiki 91, 153, 22). (more…)

I love New Year’s Eve. In some ways, it reminds me of my senior prom. It’s an opportunity to get all glammed up, go out to a fabulous party, and play for an evening at being grown-up, or maybe at being rich. Or both.
And a great beauty of SL is that you don’t have to be rich to play at being rich. For the equivalent of the cost of a mocha latte or two, you can outfit your SL self in stunning style, with attire and accessories that would be the envy of even the hottest flavor-of-the-moment supermodel. Not that supermodels care all that much, anyway; wearing beautiful clothing is just a job to them.
It’s become something of an annual tradition for me to feature formalwear from Styles of edo. I guess that shouldn’t be too surprising—edo Tone’s formals are among the best I’ve seen, and they’re always some of my favorites. I’ve chosen a few designs from his 2009 collection that I think are especially noteworthy. Hopefully you’ll think so, too. (more…)

In SL, I try to get out of my RL box, from time to time at least. Isn’t that a big part of what SL is for, really? My recent Prince of the Underworld is miles removed from anything I’d wear in RL, probably even for Halloween, if only for practical reasons. Stuff like that is a lot of fun, and it’s good to stretch. I do have my comfort zone, though, and every once in a while I run into some new designs that seem quite literally tailor-made for me and my own tastes. AlexanderHunter Rembrandt’s just-opened {AHC} (the initials stand for “AlexanderHunter’s Couture”) houses just such a collection. AlexanderHunter says that his goal with {AHC} is “class and excellence with just a hint of sexiness for both men and women…haute couture and accessories inspired by real life’s top designers. The collections are seasonal and therefore available only for a few months, making every design a limited edition.” The names of the various specialty shops at {AHC} reflect these inspirations: Dulce & Ghanel women’s wear; Valenciaga men’s wear; Prava men and women’s footwear; Vuittior men and women’s jewelry, handbags, and additional accessories; and San Lauren men and women’s skins and hairstyles. They also convey a slyness and sense of fun suggesting that AlexanderHunter isn’t taking himself too seriously. (more…)

As they pulled you out of the oxygen tent
You asked for the latest party…
Tod Browning’s freak you was
Some time back, blog reader Miron Jarman emailed to me some pictures of himself in truly fabulous glam-rock drag—it was oh so very “Velvet Goldmine.” He suggested that this look might be worth exploring for presentation here, and in true Lazy Ryan fashion I tried to recruit him for the mission. In all honesty, he had done such a good job with his own look that I felt he ought to present and take credit for it. Unfortunately, although I tried my best, he simply wasn’t able to make that commitment at the time, and left the suggestion with me. I felt like I couldn’t simply copy his look for myself, partly because it didn’t feel fair, partly because it wouldn’t be “me.” I needed to do glam my own way. (more…)

I don’t wear a lot of jewelry in real life. Oh, I have a few items I love and wear regularly. Pretty much every day I wear the Celtic knot ring in silver that I bought from a street vendor in Dublin, as well as a simple but unusual fleur-de-lis pendant I found in New Orleans. I also have my grandfather’s gold high school class ring (Class of 1932), which gets pride of place on my right hand (the middle finger—he was a big man) on special occasions. From time to time, I wear a watch, although mostly these days I rely on my mobile phone to tell me the time—strictly functional, not especially classy.
But SL is different. And I don’t mean just because in SL I can afford all kinds of extravagant jewelry that I could never even dream of touching in RL. I mean, that’s true of course—I can do that if I want to, and I certainly have. But that’s not the only difference. Equally real is the possibility of exploring different aspects of one’s personality by venturing into different genres, styles and themes that in RL might not take first priority or even be accessible. I must confess: I took Elric’s recent feature as something of a personal challenge. Not that he oh so gracefully threw down an elegantly embroidered velvet gauntlet, or anything like that. Oh, no—it was far more subtle than that. You had to read between the lines, quite literally. I’ve been fascinated by the furry culture in SL—who hasn’t?—but I never felt any personal interest in taking that particular plunge. I suppose the closest I’ve come to date has been my neko alter-ego. But Elric presented a furry of refinement and sophistication, and that seemed infinitely more accessible to me.
Elric’s gentleman fox was, however, most decidedly not a creation to be casually copied or imitated. In any case, I still didn’t feel any special pull or calling to be a fox myself, however gentlemanly a fox I might manage. I decided to ponder on what might appeal and even speak to me, and to be on the lookout for something intriguing as I shopped and explored around, as is my occasional wont. (more…)

All this talk lately about N1H1 Flu has got me thinking – why do we always have to look our best in SL? What about those days when you’re just not feelin’ it and want your AV to reflect that? My friend Miko has an answer, a folder with her Sick/Mental Health Day Outfit complete with bathrobe, hair towel, fuzzy slipper, eye covering cucumber slices and a mud mask, all perfect for just such a day. She tops it off with a tag reading “Haven’t had my Coffee” and a steaming mug. It’s hilarious! (more…)

As I mentioned in my last post, I was wearing a new skin by Namida Akami. Typically, if I plan to give a new skin a formal review, I try to do so before wearing it in a post primarily featuring clothing or other designs. This time out, I broke with tradition—I thought that Namida’s skin had just the right tone and facial features for my summer elf. I had already put the outfits together, but I made an atypical last-minute change and swapped out the skin. That’s taking a certain risk, and I wouldn’t normally do it, but in the end I think it worked out very well.
Namida’s new skin is called “Edwen”. Although I don’t know if this was Namida’s intention, the name immediately struck me as a blend of Arwen and Edward. Half-elven Arwen Undómiel, of course, was the daughter of Elrond and Celebrían, granddaughter of Galadriel, and ultimately wife of Aragorn in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The most popular Edward in fiction these days is probably Edward Cullen, Stephenie Meyer’s ethereally beautiful boy vampire, who sparkles rather than burns to ash in sunlight. (more…)

I don’t often venture into the realm of what could be called High Fashion. I guess it’s just not my thing. Now, when I say High Fashion I don’t mean Italian suits, expensive tuxedos, diamond-studded watches, that kind of thing. No, I’m talking about slick, celebrity-worthy clothing and accessories that in RL have price tags that range from extravagant to exorbitant to unthinkable, at least for you and me. The kind of designs you see on models in high-gloss layouts in big, shiny style magazines. The ones you leave out on your coffee table so people will think you’re Somebody. (more…)

Being classy on Second Life in a predominantly hip-hop environment is not easy. I’ve been on the game for well over one year and from the first day to the day I wrote this I can honestly say certain scenes on SL have and will never change. Every group, every clique, every organization has a particular style they represent. In the hip-hop community it’s usually as follows:
1 pair of Nike Uptown styled sneakers (tennis shoes for those of you in the south)
1 pair of baggy jeans
1 sports jersey
1 excessively over-primmed platinum chain and matching earrings
And last but not least, 1 oversized baseball cap representing the local team (more…)

It’s been a little while since we’ve had a Guest Style Consultant feature, so I’d say it’s about time. Roland Zepp shares his personal style, advice and suggestions in his own blog, Roland Zepp’s Fashion Sense. He was kind enough to agree to appear here, and it was a great opportunity for us to meet “in person” at last! — Ryan
I’ve gone through a lot of looks in my time here. Starting with the newbie/freebie and working up to writing about fashion and participating in the fashion world as a model and photographer, I’ve discovered a lot of styles, designs, and designers.
It’s hard to nail down exactly what my look is. At heart, I’m a minimalist kinda guy. Less is more in my book. It may not seem like it when you see all my various contests and looks and all, but when I’m just hanging out on the grid, I like to keep it pretty basic. I don’t wear a lot of extra crap in RL and I don’t see any reason to do it here.

We still have a few weeks left of Spring, but Summer’s coming on fast. I can feel it sometimes in the air, and already we’ve had to run the a/c for a day or two here and there. I’ve pulled out my shorts for the season in RL, and it seems appropriate to do the same in SL.
And there’s a bonus–in SL (although not in RL, at least not yet), I have some favorite new cargo shorts. And cargo pants. All in one. I’m talking about Masaru Raymaker’s new 4-Way Cargo Pants. What exactly are 4-Way Pants? you may well be wondering. Never fear! I shall tell you.
It’s fairly straightforward, actually. The name pretty much tells the whole story. By mixing and matching from an impressive selection of clothing-layer pieces and sculpted pockets and cuffs, Masaru’s 4-Way Cargos can be worn in four different ways, for four different looks: as shorts; cropped, or rolled to just below the knee; with the standard “system” pants cuffs we all know and love/hate; and with flared, slouchie cuffs. Not only are these impressively flexible, like all of Masaru’s designs they’re amazingly good-looking. (more…)

It begins here for me on this road. How the whole mess happened I don’t know, but I know it couldn’t happen again in a million years. Maybe I could’ve stopped it early, but once the trouble was on its way, I was just goin’ with it. Mostly I remember the girl. I can’t explain it–a sad chick like that, but somethin’ changed in me. To begin with, in second life, I’m a DJ and manager at The Wharf. I host events for other Djs, as well. If you’ve never been to the Wharf, you are missing out on a fantastic place. Chester Howley and Finnegan Chesnokov are the dynamic duo that own the place, and have made it into the awesome place it is today. I love to talk to and meet people. And I love to share my music – hence the DJ thing.
You could say that I spend a great deal of time in and around music on SL. I enjoy exploring various places, whether its a music club, seeing interesting builds, or going shopping and doing things with my friends. I have met some fantastic people, and have grown very close to a few. (more…)

I love dressing up and going out. I mean, hey, who doesn’t? There’s just something about looking good that makes you feel good. Plus, as my granny used to say, “Looking nice shows people you care.” If there’s one thing my sisters and I have learned in life it’s that, over time, our granny and our mom are always right.
What does it take to “look good”? Of course there’s no simple way to answer that question, but I’m going to take a fairly traditional approach today and start with a suit. If you’re worried that this means I’m suggesting that “looking good = stuffy,” fear not! And trust me.
Although it’s not a new discovery, I truly feel you just can’t go wrong with the classic Wool Suit by Blaze Columbia. There are certainly plenty of other suits out there, and I own a number of other fine ones, but this is the one I keep coming back to–the lines are clean, the style classic, the detailing meticulous, and the colors to die for. I love this luxurious, softly shiny blue like I love my dog. Well, like I imagine I would love my dog, if I had a dog. (more…)

I have a terrible confession to make. Are you ready? Please don’t make me say this more than once, it’s bad enough as it is. Okay, here goes: Stuff gets lost in my inventory sometimes.
There, I said it. Wow, I feel about a thousand times better already! Confession really is good for the soul.
Does this ever happen to you? It’s not just me, right? Tell me it’s not. Maybe “lost” is too strong a word, though. It’s really more about organization, or rather lack thereof, and therefore the possibility or impossibility of actually finding things, and less about items somehow going *poof*. Unfortunately, what this sometimes means is that interesting things I’ve acquired but not yet featured here end up falling by the virtual wayside. (more…)

You never know what a billionaire might look like. Not all of them look like Rockefellers. It might be the guy sitting next to you on the bus (improbable), or the woman with the gaudy jewelry and the loud voice in the ladies’ room at the opera (more likely). Chances are it’s not the checker at the supermarket, although a recent lotto win is at least technically possible. But it certainly could be the guy sitting in front of you at the racetrack–you know, the guy in the fedora, very casually dressed, sitting alone, doesn’t talk much, never even glances at the racing form. The one who never cheers or has any reaction at all to the outcome of the races. The one who never seems to win or lose, just makes silent trips to the mutuel window every so often. The guy who pays zero attention to the cute blond jockey-ette to his right (although that could be her choice of skin, which although pretty is a demo). He could definitely be a billionaire, or at least a millionaire, especially if it’s a weekday, when the gainfully employed are typically at work, gainfully pursuing their employment. So, yeah, you never know what a billionaire might look like. I mean, look at Bill Gates.

Ryan: The first thing I noticed about Dimitri is that all of his prim accessories–clothing components, hair, jewelry, glasses–were perfectly fitted. It’s not that I’m constantly going around and checking out how guys have fitted their prims…well, actually I guess I do in fact do that. Hey, it’s part of the job! But almost any guy will let one thing or another slide just a bit, or decide not to lose any sleep over that one last strand of hair. Not Dimitri. I’m pretty uptight about fitting hair myself, so I feel his angst.
Dimitri: Well, I must admit, I was a little nervous when I sent in the application for the guest style consultant. I have been interested in doing something like this for quite some time and when I saw [Ryan's] post on the web site, I jumped at the opportunity. I have been in SL about five months now, but ever since the first month I have really been into men’s fashion. I create my outfits with the intention of being noticed and standing out in a crowd. I am more of a casual guy when it comes to clothes, but I don’t limit myself to that type of style. I also love to dabble in other types. (more…)

Nothing says “I love you” like jewelry. And I’m not just talking about the ladies here–it’s a not-very-secret secret that guys like jewelry, too. I think it’s because there’s so little good lingerie out there for us. I mean, hey, a good pair of boxer briefs and we’re done. (Although, hmm, there are always silks…) I’m not talking about watches, either, at least not today. I love watches, but for me they’re more an accessory item than jewelry. Jewelry is something you wear just because it’s pretty. There, I said it and I’ll say it again: pretty. Deep down, you know it’s true.
In case you haven’t noticed, Valentine’s Day is coming right up, check your calendar! For your gift-giving consideration, I thought I’d suggest some jewelry items that I love and admire. I’m hoping that you (or your man) might like them too.

When I recently put together a new and very different avatar for myself (in response to a Style Throwdown challenge from Express), I never intended for him to be a one-shot deal. Frankly, the investment (in skins, hair, and attitue) was not exactly insignificant, and I not only planned but promised to bring him back now and then. I figured, if nothing else, he’d provide a way for me to explore and present some designs that might not otherwise be quite Ryan’s style.
Trevor Turner has been creating the Young Urban line for a good while now, refining his technique along the way, and his recent designs, while still low-key and relatively straightforward, have been ever more polished and interesting. Take for example the Vest shown here. The neckline scoops casually low, the fabric texture is slightly, comfortably rough rather than refined and smooth, the shading depicts realistic tugs and tension in the fabric rather than arbitrary wrinkles. Wear it alone, with tee, or with short-sleeved white shirt and prim cuffs. L$190 each in four colors: Black, Blue, Brown and Grey. (more…)
