Bon Voyage Cybersuit at LeeZu

opening.jpgO SING THE BODY CYBERNETIC; to celebrate the electron winds that blow us into being. Spirit is wind, is wind not spirit? These packets of information slipping and zipping down cables to reassemble before my eyes, are they the body only? Or contain they the soul?

LeeZu Baxter has been creating beautiful and clever clothes for women, and a few for men, for a long time. When friend Harper Beresford blogged about LeeZu‘s new cybersuit, Bon Voyage, I rushed over the store to see if I could possibly wear it. The good news is that a men’s version was on the way. I do love me a bargain

holy_relic_uniform_full1.jpgBut hey, doesn’t everybody?  So I figure I’m not alone in that, not hardly.  Surely you yourself are fond of getting a good deal.  Here’s the thing:  there are any number of other great blogs that focus on the great freebies, dollarbies and other bargains you can find in SL.  As much as I like me a good bargain, bargains aren’t my main emphasis here.  That said, if as you’re reading this you’re thinking, “Well, I love bargains, I’m killer at finding them, and I wouldn’t mind writing about the ones I find”…hey, give me a shout.  We can do a deal, Mr. Bond!  Today, though, I’ve got some great (I think they’re great) all-but-freebie items to show off.  I’m hoping at least one or two of them will entice you do a little low-budget, high-value shopping.

The items making up my various outfits are all (with some few exceptions) from Slanted Fox.  I’m sure I had visited Slanted Fox at some point in the past, but if I took anything home with me I’ve lost track of it somehow since then.  I forget exactly what I was searching for the other day, when I ended up visiting again, but I think the phrase “3L$ Store” jumped out at me from the search listings.  Apparently I must have clicked the link because there was a telltale whoosh, and next thing I knew I was in Harajukubox Town.  You know, sometimes stuff just happens, and all you can do is roll with it. Rogues of New Babbage: Part the First

laurin_full.jpgThe Ruffian

The kid had earned something of a bad reputation for himself in New Babbage.  He supposed that was due in no small part to his tendency to, shall we say, not always pay for everything he put into his pockets on Market Day.  Also, quite possibly, the fact that, when he did make payment  in actual coin, that coin had not necessarily been earned by way of actual honest labor.  He rolled his eyes and sighed; such distinctions were boring and tedious, and they made him feel tired.  And they were pointless as well, when there was such fun to be had! [Guest Style Consultant] : Nothing Quan

nothing_067.jpgIn spite of my recent holiday foray into latex, this isn’t really an area I’ve explored in any depth.  As admirable as a lot of the design work is, it just doesn’t speak to me personally, and as a result I haven’t featured it here.  There’s no denying that there’s some quality work being done in the genre, though, and Nothing Quan kind of nudged (teased?) me to cover more…or rather, less.  I nudged right back and suggested that he bring his more extensive experience and expertise to bear on the topic.  The result is the sampling of specialty gear from Elixir you see before you today.  Open your mind, limber up your expectations, and feast your eyes!  I’ll let Nothing take it from here.  – Ryan (more…)

High-gloss accessories: YV by Yvette Vultee

yv_01.jpg
I don’t often venture into the realm of what could be called High Fashion.  I guess it’s just not my thing.  Now, when I say High Fashion I don’t mean Italian suits, expensive tuxedos, diamond-studded watches, that kind of thing.  No, I’m talking about slick, celebrity-worthy clothing and accessories that in RL have price tags that range from extravagant to exorbitant to unthinkable, at least for you and me.  The kind of designs you see on models in high-gloss layouts in big, shiny style magazines.  The ones you leave out on your coffee table so people will think you’re Somebody. [Guest Style Consultant] : Elric Anatine

elric_03.jpgAfter two years in Second Life (SL) I am only now realizing how much SL mimics Real Life (RL) — be it personalities, behaviours, creations, fashions and more (1).  I dare say, without trying, my RL self has bled almost fully into my SL self.  When I first entered SL I knew I wished to explore the Victorian gentleman aspect of myself.  Being a clothes whore in RL, it was natural for me to insist on finding just the perfect outfits that I had envisioned towards my creation.  Two years ago, the selection of Victorian clothing available was miniscule and in many cases, not exactly what I was looking for.  I suffered my fashion crisis in silence, but remained vigilant in keeping a spectacled eye towards growing and new designers. Winter formals [ii] : Schadenfreude

revenant_suit_festive.jpgIn my previous “Winter formals” post I featured some contemporary but classic men’s formal-dress items by edo Tone. You may still be searching for the perfect suit to wear, though, if the formal winter festivities you’ll be attending are a little less conventional, a little more…gothly. If that’s the case, I dare say you may need look no further than the Revenant Suit by Allegory Malaprop. Although sloe-eyed Frosty here seems indifferent to its charms, not to mention my own, I can assure you that it’s a remarkable piece of sartorial engineering indeed. It has, in fact, already prompted unsolicited compliments (the best kind) from unexpected quarters. You really must take a closer look. (more…)

Blogger Style Throwdown: Snow Day Tag Team under 5500L (vs. Nicolas Sinatra and Dahlia Eilde)

That’s right, the throwdown is back! As I told you last week, we’ve got twice as many people this time around for a tag team throwdown. I’m up against Nicolas Sinatra and Dahlia Eilde of the couples fashion blog, Bonnie & Clyde. Both are experienced models, currently employed by Nex-Core Model Management. On top of that, Bonnie & Clyde is one of the first couples fashion blogs for Second Life, so they have plenty of experience working together. I’ll be teaming up with my lovely wifey, TheDiva Rockin, Chief of the SL Fashion Police, and hoping we can keep pace with em.

Our theme is “Snow day.” Why’s that? Because a good portion of the Northern Hemisphere has experienced snow in the past few weeks. Basically, its too cold for me go outside. Luckily, SL lets us play in the snow without the cold, the wet, the mushy, and the soggy.

It’s a win-win for everyone.

Blogger Style Throw–nevermind…

So y’all might be wondering what happened to the throwdown. Basically, my last opponent had a lot of RL issues come up halfway through the round and I’ve had RL and SL issues so we called it off for a bit. I had been planning to introduce something new, so that’s coming to you now.

The process of choosing a theme is basically spinning a big wheel. I use two random numbers. One of them acts as a bit of salt, choosing where the wheel starts spinning from. The other, usually much larger, is the equivalent of actually spinning the wheel. I get the numbers in different ways — sometimes I use a website and other times I just ask my opponent to pick a number.

I’m thinking of using yet another wheel. Up till now I’ve used a somewhat vague theme, that both my opponent and I can interpret as we see fit. But more and more, those outfits and feeling like costumes and not actually something most folks could wear on a day to day basis. To remedy the situation, I just need to have more types of themes — another wheel. (more…)

Halloween 2008 [v] : Giver of the Dark Gift

blood_fountain.jpgHe saw her at dusk, standing at the Blood Fountain.  He had only just arisen for the night, and she must have known that, must have been waiting.  She was brave, or reckless, perhaps thoughtless, certainly foolish–but, however mildly curious he might be, in the end he knew it was of no importance.  She was there; that was all that mattered.  She could not possibly have made herself more an offering, no matter if she had tried for an eternity.  She was beautiful, which was pleasing if unnecessary, and she was daringly attired, which was unsurprising.  Her bared neck and shoulders amused him, her prayerful stance struck him as forceful if unoriginal, but her rosary necklace pushed him almost to the brink of laughter.  It was not that the Christian cross had no power–no, not at all.  But it was after all only a symbol, and meant little in the absence of belief, however limited.  And he did not sense from her anything like belief.  From her he sensed only anticipation, expectation…resignation?  Was it?  With most it would have been, but not with her.  Interesting.

He knew she was his when she deigned to notice his presence. (more…)

Blogger Style Throwdown: “Dystopian Masquerade Ball” under 3000L (vs. Iustinian Tomsen)

So one of the things that Throwdown winners get to do is come up with ideas for other throwdowns. Domch Raymaker had a great theme for me: “aristocracy”. Unfortunately for him, he told me this while changing from his old outfit into a pink Darth Vader suit, and SL didn’t play nice. The end result in my head was even more fun: “dystopian masquerade ball.” Honestly, I had no clue where to start with this one, but I think that helped level the playing field against my opponent Iustinian Tomsen. Model, magazine writer, contributor to many blogs and owner of SLStyle, Iustinian is one of the classiest dressing males on the grid. With a budget of 3000L, I’m sure he and I will both have interesting interpretations of the theme. (more…)

The last three things I bought at BareRose Tokyo

galaxy_train_ride_blue_full.jpg

Sometimes when I go shopping at June Dion’s BareRose Tokyo, it makes me crazy. That could be the lag, which can be ferocious. Or it could be that I can’t walk out of there without clicking BUY at least, oh, four or five times. I usually have a folder in my inventory that contains just the last few things I picked up there, so hopefully I’ll think of them when special occasions arise, or at least remember to try them on at some point. The very existence of this folder inspired the topic (and title) of this post. I’m only surprised it took so long. I’ve had these for at least a little while, so I won’t call them “new.” I checked last night, and there are a number of more recently released designs available now, so some of these have been moved out of the New Items towers at the front of the store. Such are the productivity and prowess of June’s CS3 monkeys.

The “Galaxy Train Ride” ensemble for men makes me happy. The name alone puts a smile on my face. I mean, honestly–can you not think of a dandy gentleman boarding a steam-powered rocket train for a quick jaunt to the center of the Milky Way? And, being a gentleman, of course he’d take along some bread, cheese, fruit and wine for a nice picnic lunch. (more…)

Jetcity Shop

Jetcity OutfitI’ve been a bit lazy about getting some freebies to you because freebies tend to come in batches. When you get one, you get twenty other stores doing something at the same time. They don’t really mean to be giving freebies out when everyone else does — it just happens around events like RL holidays or SL events like SL5B. It just so happens to be a bit of downtime between these freebie rushes, so I’m recovering from the burnout of mad freebie hunting by sifting on my butt and being lazy.

That said, I still have some good stuff to send to send your way. One of my latest finds is an awesome little shop called Jetcity. Everything in the store, by owner Jiru Jetcity, is free (as in free beer :P ). There isn’t much, but what is there is rather refreshingly different. Most of the stuff here looks better on skinny, lighter framed guys instead of the typical over muscled SL male. (more…)

Box of Freebies at MadHouse 88

Madhouse 88 OutfitI honestly hadn’t heard of this store before I got a landmark by way of the Free*Style group notices a few weeks ago. I finally head in to the store and I must say I’m glad I did. First of all, the store is really cool. The build is excellent quality, and its just a nice place to look at. On top of that, there are cool-looking clothes that aren’t same stuff you find everyone else wearing. Who doesn’t like being special like that? On top of that, and more important for this post, the owner has been quite generous and has a box full of cool clothes so we can try out his stuff.

The hat, shirt, pants, and gloves are all from MadHouse 88. Lets start from the top. The hat is a close-fitting Jeep Cap and comes in three different colors: gray, green, and red. Its easiest to wear with no hair underneath, so a skin with hair drawn on would probably come in really handy. If you don’t have one, it covers enough of your head most people wouldn’t give it a second thought. Its relatively easy to resize so long as the top of your head is generally circular. (more…)

That Stuff Everyone Blogged About A Few Days Ago

Muism Made a Freebie JacketSo, Muism dropped a freebie. It’s been blogged a few times. Honestly, I don’t like it much. The flexi prim bottom to the jacket looks a bit weird. While the prims come in a few sizes and are modifiable, they are no mod and the collar and tail are linked, limiting the proportions of the item so there’s a chance you can’t fit them correctly. However — its a freebie, and beggars can’t be choosers. Maybe you’ll need it for a costume. Who knows? I’m wearing it with the sleeves rolled up, but you can wear it with sleeves rolled down as well. The non-prim part can be worn on the jacket or shirt layer. Grab it by joining the Muism group and looking in the archives.

Anyway, I’m wearing more than just the jacket. Under it I’m wearing a white tank from Draconic Kiss, available for free in the far back corner of the store. It comes in four colors: white, black, red and blue. There’s also a tshirt pack with the same colors too. The back corner seems like a discount corner in general, there is other stuff for relatively cheap back there. All are available on the shirt layer only, which limits their usefulness. However, they do fit under jackets in a pinch and are quite useful like that, and the price can’t be beat. (more…)

Review: Hair and gear @ Darkstar Designs

gears_thrash_gensho.jpgWe all go a little crazy sometimes. It even happens to me. Fortunately in this case I’m not talking Norman Bates crazy; I just got a little click-happy and kept buying, and buying…and buying. I blame Posy (that’s my story, and I’m sticking with it) because she’s the one who dropped on me the landmark to Gaia Goodnight’s shop, Darkstar Designs. Hopefully this isn’t old news to everyone but me, but Gaia’s shop showcases some great design work with clear anime, steampunk and cyperbpunk influences, all at extremely reasonable prices. The beauty of this is that when you do go crazy (and you will, I say this with confidence), the effect on your L$ balance won’t be devastating. :)

Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of men’s clothing designs beyond a few tees (although there are plenty of things for the ladies just across the way at Sh!t Happens), but as you’ll see I came home with hair styles and accessories enough to put together seven different looks. I may not have mixed-and-matched the way Gaia had in mind, or the way you would do, but that’s the further beauty of having such an embarrassment of riches to play with.

Let’s start kind of simple and work our way up from there. (more…)

Designer Review: Angry Monkey by Vas Legend

banjo.jpgfirst.jpgThe desert was the apotheosis of all deserts, huge, standing to the sky for what looked like eternity in all directions. It was white and blinding and waterless and without feature save for the faint, cloudy haze of the mountains which sketched themselves on the horizon and the devil-grass which brought sweet dreams, nightmares, death. An occasional tombstone sign pointed the way, for once the drifted track that cut its way through the thick crust of alkali had been a highway. Coaches and buckas had followed it. The world had moved on since then. The world had emptied.

Interview: Vas Legend of Angry Monkey

angrymonkey_snapshot_001.jpg

The Angry Monkey product selection was brought to my attention by Saeya Nyanda when I was looking for outfit components to support a review I was working on for Steam Powered Industries’ Jump Boots. Upon entering the store one immediately notices two things: (1) the level of texture realism embodied in the work and (2) the salvage yardian feel of the goods. I walked away with the Splinter Bracers and a lasting impression of the calibre of goods – the Junkyard Patriot flag being one of the most striking alternative accessories I’ve seen.

The quality of Vas Legend’s work speaks for itself. In fact, when I donned the pieces from his his newer “Distruzio”, “Road Warrior” and hobo-esque releases and wandered around the grid many people instantly reacted to the pieces. “Great gear” and “That is some ding dang diggity dong cool sh*t you have on!” were some of the comments aimed at the gear. If they weren’t strapped on tightly someone would have walked away with ‘em ([21:18] Aenea Nori touches Cat’s banjo. [21:18] Catero Revolution slaps Aenea’s hand).

Not too long ago Mr. Legend was kind enough to entertain some questions about his store, his content creation philosophies and his latest releases. (more…)

Grand Opening @ Civvies Wearables

civvies_storefront.jpgPosy Trudeau has been busy. Yes, that Posy Trudeau, she ofMiau Haus fame. She has embarked on a new (ad)venture and just opened Civvies Wearables, her new clothing shop for men and women. As the very name suggests, the emphasis here is on wearability, and in fact many oftheseitems have clearly been worn before. But, as Posy says, “…every rip, hole and stain tells a story.” The design of the shop carries out this theme as well, with its construction and furnishings giving the impession of having been knocked together from scavenged construction materials and other found items.
