So, the Discord Nightmare City sim is amazingly awesome. First off, its just got awesome atmosphere — divided into smaller streets and sections each with its own feel and type of product. I will admit, though, it is a little bit tough to move around since there is no flying and no teleporting. Second — the prices are rather low. The most expensive items I saw were AOs and extremely prim-heavy outfits, including typing animations, at 250L. And third (and definitely most important) the content is just frickin’ awesome.
Before I prattle on about the owner and his stuff, let me get my announcement out of the way. Starting, well, since the first of the month there’s a hunt/prize/whatever ya wanna call it at the sim. Currently, there are two outfits (one for a guy, and one for a girl) scattered throughout the sim as 12 heart shaped boxes. These boxes are tough to find. Which is why you have a lot of time to find em. Six boxes are parts for the guys, and six boxes are parts for the girls. The six parts for the guys include jacket, pants, prim skirt, left sleeve, right sleeve, and collar/tie. All together, they form the sei-sou outfit (in hana orange) that I’m wearing in the picture. Hunts liked these are planned as part of the future of the sim, so there will always be somethin goin on. (more…)

Especially now that I’m no longer in the competition, I figured why not discuss the “freebie” version of my entry to the Muism Contest. The majority of the items will of course come from Muism, but a bunch of others come from other spots.
To figure out what to wear, I decided to go through all the Muism freebies I’d collected over time. My first Muism product I ever tried on was their Xmas gift from last year, a red suit. I don’t get to wear that suit often enough. Next, I put on their racing jacket (which is still available, btw — it was recently added to the archives again). See, I told you it’d be handy in a costume
.Anyway, I noticed a bit of a common trend — Muism seems to like red in freebies. Perhaps I’m (actually I know I am) taking a bad sample space, but I decided to try on a few other red things. (more…)

I was in a barren and empty sim, the hour was late and it was dark (I had forced midnight) when a mysterious message urgently demanded my attention. “Your mission, should you choose to accept it: for the next issue of Second Style, highlight some of the best individual designs in SL fashion of the last twelve months. This IM will self-destruct in ten seconds. Nine. Eight….”
I logged out quickly, but not before triggering a sly smile ( }:-> ). I knew that this assignment would challenge me like no other, and I would have to rely on all my skills and training. How to select just a handful of items from the many released over the past year? It seemed…impossible.
Hopefully my superiors will agree that I have succeeded. All of these creations epitomize the best of what SL design has to offer. In chronological order by month of release: (more…)

“Sweeney Todd meets Artful Dodger meets Vogue. You can wear this Whenever.” So says the notecard included with Raven Pennyfeather’s new extravagant ensemble for men, called “Timeless.” Raven has a veritable gift for creating elaborate themed clothing designs that blur the lines of era, style and gender, so I’m inclined to take her at her word on this.
Part Carpathian warlord, part vintage dandy, part bondage master, “Timeless” is not simply appropriate but de rigeur for any number of pastimes, from arguably innocent to highly questionable. As you put it on, and then begin to take layers back off, your racing mind will no doubt envision multitudinous scenarios in which to explore all it has to offer. It is the perfect expression for your more decadent, lustier side. Come, fall into that pool of hedonism with me. (more…)

Two questions for you: (1) Do you love sword & sorcery role-playing in Second Life? (2) Do you collect memorabilia from the Lord of the Rings films?
OK, yeah, me neither.
So why am I standing here in front of a map of ‘Middle Earth’ wearing clothes with names that are spelled a little like Welsh railway stations? If you have to ask, you clearly haven’t clicked the photos to enlarge them. These are beautiful beautiful clothes, detailed and rich and luxurious. I’m telling you, the role-players are better dressed than you. (more…)

This is the second part of a two-part designer review of Kavar Cleanslate’s clothing designs, available at Exile. You can read the first part here.
Let’s just pick up where we left off, hey? Up next is “London Punk” (L$550), an outfit with a distinctive look that for most needs no further description (but pictures are always helpful, so you’re getting some). In the box you get two jackets (one with tartan-and-black sleeves, one sleeveless), a barely-there “spidertrap” shirt, red tartan pants with prim side pockets, black facial jewelry, plus collar, belts and various armbands and legbands. The facial jewelry is linked as a single attachment, so you will need to use Edit Linked Parts to position the various pieces precisely for your avatar–I found this to be fairly simple. This is another of Kavar’s “deluxe sets,” and in addition to the clothing items you also get his “Revenge” mohawk hair style, shown here in blonde with dark tips. This style so reminds me of a guy I knew in high school, who used large quantities of egg whites, dyes and bleach to get his hair to look just like this. I admired his dedication. Right-click-and-wear is much simpler.

Just so you’ll know, I do occasionally learn from my own experiences. Although I’m embarking here on an overall designer review (rather than a specific new release), I will endeavor not to make again the tactical error I made when I reviewed Gaia Goodnight’s Darkstar Designs earlier this month, namely the ill-advised decision to include umpteen different outfits and items in a single post. And don’t get it wrong–the temptation to do so again with Kavar Cleanslate’s designs at Exile was very, very strong. However, I’m confident that you are a gentle and patient people, and you’re willing to accept delayed rather than instant gratification. If not, you can just TP over to the shop and check things out for yourself.
Kavar mentioned to me that he’s really into themed outfits and costumes right now, and I want to cover a couple of his new releases for you here. Imagine the possibilities for themed nights at your favorite club! Hmm, sometimes there are cash prizes…I’m just sayin’. (more…)

“Master D’Orsay, the time for delivering has long since past.” D’Orsay’s valet AO’d something of his own creation, wherein he tapped the side of his leg impatiently with his left hand while raising one Spocklike eyebrow. It was a deft piece of script, designed to indicate exasperation, cheek and no small measure of the insolence that invariably comes with familiarity. “We are expected.”
“I am aware, Tiro,” D’Orsay acknowledged with his usual equanimity. The fact was, the drafts the Lady Astarte has commissioned of him were perhaps half complete, and his valet Tiro called him now to an appointment for which he was more than a little underprepared. Tiro’s impatience was just; and their conversation was holed with the vacuum-bell pauses indicative of one who is doing some work offline and ALT-Tab’ing back and forth between World and Word. D’Orsay was, rather guiltily, engaging his deadline pace.

So what if, as the song says, the weather outside is frightful? I’m such a whore for sweaters and coats as it is, I barely need winter as an excuse. This month you get to benefit from my hedonistic accumulation of cold-weather wardrobe items, as I’m sharing some of my favorites, both old and new.
First up, an old favorite of mine. These Pea Coats by Donmai Frederick, released last winter, have classic lines and a beautiful wool fabric texture. The set includes coats in six colors: Beige, Black, Blue (as shown here), Brown, Gray and Green. A simple undershirt also adds shape and bulk to the coat, so you look like you’re layering properly for the cold weather, just like your mother told you. As if that weren’t enough, you also get four flexi scarves, plain and striped, in short and longer lengths. Undershirt and scarves are tintable, so you can customize to your heart’s content. Also available in a set styled for women. Pick these up for L$300 for the set at Back and Forth (Metabirds 192, 71, 25). (more…)

I came to with a start, my head jerking up. It ached and my eyes hurt. I laid my face back down on the cold concrete floor. Everything was buzzing and spinning, the world had become fuzzy. I could hear the sound of shoes scuffling on the floor but my eyes wouldn’t focus.
Now if I could just remember how I got here and what I was doing here. The last thing I could remember was being in a bar in Capistran, a small harbor town. I had finally found some peace. It had been months since the encounter with the bounty hunter and had to run, paranoia following me everywhere I went. It was impossible to be in a populated area and still be able to sleep and eat. I saw Luminares minions everywhere, whether they were real or not. Every stare or quick glance had shivers running up my spine and me looking for a place to hide or run to. Finally I decided the safest place for me would be in a farming community, so I took to the road at night and walked till I came across the small village of Sandfall. It was a sleepy town, full of hard working men and women just trying to survive and keep their kids safe. (more…)

Sculpties abound in this pair of outfits designed by June Dion for Bare Rose. A casualty of my break, these outfits don’t really count as new anymore, but look at the pictures. They deserve coverage.
I was unimpressed with the first sculptie attachments to clothing. Bell sleeves, flared cuffs– what could sculpties do for fashion that couldn’t be accomplished with regular prims? Well, June showed me. In this first outfit, Man in Black, the hood comes in both regular and neko, the shape suggesting cat ears beneath. It’s a look that’s not replicable with any method other than sculpties. Maybe there’s something to these prims after all.

This is Gaku-Gen by Orange Meili of Discord. The white version in particular whispers “simplicity,” albeit intelligently decorated. The stylized tribal/flame design in contrasting colour is avoids cliche with its restraint and asymmetry, especially on the trousers. There’s something anime about the exaggerated flare of the trousers and length of the jacket/robe. The robe bottom is a skirt-layer garment rather than a prim attachment, so strike a kung-fu pose and the design will stretch like it’s printed on a rubber band. Somehow I find this adds to, rather than subtracts from, the anime feel of the outfit.

Look. Now look hard. This is Banneret, the latest release from artist hyasynth Tiramisu of Silent Sparrow. There are more clothes for women than for men at the shop, but the outfits for men, like Banneret, are exceptional. There are four versions (400L$ each, fat pack 1200L$). Each is the same shape, each has prim cuffs and the innovative straight prim collar with buttons. And each comes with gloves, trousers and a jacket that can be worn on its own or with a flexi-prim tunic extension. This version is called Twilight. Think it’s just black? Look again. Look at that purple piping trim. Each has different coloured details. Now look harder. Each has a different intricate brocade pattern, soft black on hard black. There are secrets about black. But the real story of Silent Sparrow is the story of colours you cannot see. (more…)

The Pirate of the Seas
Ah, the lonely life of the pirate. There’s something darkly romantic about the idea of the dangerous gentleman (or scoundrel) who make his risky and unconventional living plying the sea lanes for riches, rum, and other desirable commodities. Designer swaffette Firely of SF Design brings her considerable talents to bear on this interpretation of the classic pirate captain’s attire of choice. The new Captain’s Frock Coat (L$180) comes in both Black, as shown here, and a dashing Red. Either will impress the surly midshipman, craven deckhand, or about-to-be-boarded adversary. Clearly, the man wearing this coat is not one to be trifled with. (more…)

I had a great time decorating for Halloween last year. I think one of the appeals of Second Life is the opportunity to do things that can’t be done reasonably or maybe even at all in Real Life. In addition to going a little crazy with the house and yard decorations, I also had, um, several different costumes for myself. You may not feel the need to go quite that far, but surely you’ll need at least one. Here are some ideas I’m playing with for this year, some new and some that have been around for a while. I only wore one of these last year, though, so I’m not just recycling things that are already sitting in my inventory! I’ve tried to include a mix of clothing costumes and avatars, although some costumes can be so elaborate that the line between often seems blurred. These are just some personal favorites of mine, and we’re by no means done for the season–you’ll undoubtedly see at least a few more seasonally themed items in the next few weeks.
