Rite of Spring

Every year, about this time, I find myself on the lookout for an outfit, ensemble, accessory—something—that’s at least vaguely Easter-y in theme or tone. I’m not really sure why. It’s not like I’m looking for Valentine’s Day outfits every time February 14 rolls around. How many times can you dress up like Cupid, anyway? Read the rest of this entry »

Small packages

Bigger is not necessarily better. I know, I know—size matters, and all that. People do say that. But as always, it’s not what you’ve got: it’s what you do with it that matters. Read the rest of this entry »

Not your typical Christmas angel

No shepherds here. No wise men. No baby. No stable, either. No bright, bright star up in the sky. Just an angel. Read the rest of this entry »

A scandal in New Babbage

When he stepped off the train into the empty station, he felt not fear or apprehension but, rather, simple annoyance. He hesitated for a moment and turned to signal the porter, but the porter had vanished back into the car and the train was already pulling out of the station in chuffing clouds of steam. He was annoyed because it had been no small task to secure passage to New Babbage on such short notice (notwithstanding the urgent nature and secretly noble origins of the request), especially in a style to which he was most comfortably accustomed. He was annoyed because he could see clearly that, in spite of all extravagant promises to the contrary, no one was there to meet him. He was annoyed because he could see that the nearby hostelry was the Mechanix Arms—no doubt a fine enough establishment, but it was not the Brunel Hall Hotel, where he had rooms reserved for his immediate occupancy. Baby, it’s cold outside

One of the beautiful things about SL is that I can (virtually) wear things I wouldn’t, couldn’t, or simply have no need to wear in real life. Although I do tend to express my own personal and particular tastes more often than not, I’ve also learned to find the fun in putting together looks for different “personalities” of my avatar that aren’t Ryan. Sometimes this is more challenging (I imagine because of a combination of “I know Ryan so well” and “There’s already a lot of me in Ryan”–both of which are of course true), but other times everything seems to come together almost as if by magic. Good things come to those who wait

Lo these many or at least several months ago, so long ago I’m not sure exactly when, I remember receiving an IM one evening from someone I knew by reputation, but not personally. “We’re making new stuff! We’re opening a shop! We’re so excited!” The “we” in question was Ghost Harris and Willow Caldera, and the ensuing chat was friendly, humorous and altogether enjoyable. In all honesty, at this point I’m not really sure which one of them I was chatting with that evening. Was it Ghost? Was it Willow? Does it matter? Nah, not really. It was good news, and I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. Read the rest of this entry »

Putting it together–for under L$200

You’ve probably heard of organized weekend shopping events like Fifty Linden Fridays and Sixty Linden Weekends. With their (as you can no doubt guess) discounted sale items, designed to get you in the door, they’re great for bargain-hunters of all preferences and persuasions. I’ve been known to take advantage of these myself, but I’m rarely able to share the joy here, at least not while the sale is still on—the weekends are so short, after all. So don’t get used to this, not at all. That said…I guess there’s a first time for everything. This ensemble was put together all in one stop at JohnnyD Posthorn’s Juice (Jet Lag 97, 119, 21). You too can pick up the Hucker Hoodie, ultra-low-cut Dixie Jeans and unisex Tonka Boots for just L$60 each. Choose copy/mod permissions or mod/transfer, if you want to give them as gifts. But don’t wait! The sale ends at midnight SLT tomorrow (as I write this), Sunday, June 19. After that, you’ll be paying full price.

Iniquity and Redemption in the Wastelands

When the Gunmage arrived at Fort Stygian, he was struck by the sheer desolation of the place. He supposed that should have been surprising—after all, what did one expect of a place its residents had decided to call Stygian? And apparently with no irony whatsoever. His trek across the desert had been long and arduous, so imagine his dismay when he discovered that the fortified town had been built not encircling a spring or oasis but on the edge of a live volcanic crater, heaving with molten rock almost to the surface. It was truly a sight to behold, if one could manage to do more than squint in the sulfurous smoke and shimmering heat. He had heard that the magma well was reputedly a fantastic power source, although the means of extraction or conversation was apparently (and understandably) a profound secret. Hopefully this meant that he would have no trouble obtaining charge for his plasma-bulb weapons. Read the rest of this entry »

Old Man Winter, be gone!

Although the weather where I live has been weirdly back-and-forth the last few weeks, even so I can tell that Spring is on the metaphorical horizon.  (In fact, today–seemingly out of nowhere–it was almost 90F.)  In SL, too, designers are seeing and feeling the change of seasons, and this shows clearly as they release new lines for warm, long days and pleasant nights. Here for your consideration: a few of Giz Seorn’s new creations—from her Summer 2011 collection, but I think they’ll work just as well for Spring. Read the rest of this entry »

Steampunk royale

I was more than a little amused when I read a recent comment from Rhys, something along the lines of “going more steampunk.” It was funny because I was already putting together a steampunk feature in my head, having realized that it had been a while since I had been to Babbage. Unfortunately, finishing it up took longer than I had anticipated—but here we are at last! Read the rest of this entry »
