Ronin Jeans & Things @ WMD

jeans.jpgI don’t care how cut up they are, they’re currently my favourite pair of jeans and I’m going to wear them. They’ve got a lot of life left in them and they’re comfortable and they’re so London. The Union Jack on the front is ok, innit? But the London Underground logo on the back pocket is well bad. And I’ve washed the things so many times that the reds and blues are just faded enough. But the best part — you ready for this? — the best part of all is I can wear ‘em with anything. ‘Cos they’re actually two jeans in one. Low risers, for sure, you’ll see them in the other photos, but these are the high risers. Both in the same folder, pick whichever suits your top. Safe. They’re handmade for you by Maruko Sakigake of WMD — how can you not love a company named Weird Monkey Design? They come in lots of colours and designs; mine are Ronin London Edition; L$199 for the two pairs. There’s also a plain blue set for the special knock-down of L$50. Go get ‘em. (more…)

Review: Izumiya Outfits

Izumiya Outfit 4Izumiya is a wonderful store that I’ve been meaning to post about but never got around to actually doing it. Till now that is. I mentioned one item in an earlier post, but Izumi Homewood’s work deserve so much more attention than that.

Izumiya consists of mutually complementing halves. The second floor is all freebies and dollarbies. There are accessories, shirts, pants, hats(with hair), a suit, and even poses to be found up there. Creamy Cooljoke, of Free*style, and I coincidentally discovered this store at the same time, and she (unlike me) already covered the freebie side of things, esp. the dollarbie suit. So I’ll focus on the other half, the only slightly more expensive first floor.

Downstairs, prices range between 5L and 70L. Items range from pendants, hats, and hair to belts, bags, jackets. My favorite part, however, are the prepackaged outfits.

Freebies from Rich People Stores

Rich Folk Outfit 1Remember me? For the few of you who do.. no I didn’t die. I’ve just been very busy with RL and then “relaxed” a bit with a week of summer vacation. My vacation isn’t quite over yet, but I felt that I had to cover some freebies that might disappear soon. My laptop’s onboard graphics aren’t good enough SL so I snuck onto a friend’s machine to install SL to snap a few pics for this post. Thus, this post is brought to you by my friend with no desktop password :P

Anyway, a long time ago I said that I couldn’t buy fancy clothes cuz I’m poor. Well, now a good number of those rich stores have freebies all in one spot: KMADD Enterprise. KMADD had a lot of gifts out from their opening, which disappeared a lil while back, before I could cover them (I hadn’t started blogging when they disappeared). Its not all bad though, because they replaced them with different gifts from a handful of the KMADD stores, including Tonic, Tango NY, Endeavor, Indigo, Redgrave, Mechanism, Mhaijik Things, SF Design, and of course MADesigns. New: Sculptie/flexi hoodie @ GearShift;

Or, The Return of Donovan Brennen

guile_jacket_full.jpgA few days before I headed out on my vacation trip (having a great time, wish you were here!), I ran into Donovan Brennen as he was updating his shop at Plunder.  I do think I literally ran into him, or at least landed very nearly on his head when I materialized at the landing area as I logged in.  I didn’t actually realize that he was there until he said, “Hey Ryan, what are you doing here?”  I could only respond honestly: “Um, I think this must be where I was when I last crashed.  And gave up.  Last night.  And please note that I say ‘crashed’ rather than ‘logged out.’”  Which I guess is, more than anything, a sad commentary on the state of my five-year-old PC and the trouble it has with the newer SL clients.  But that’s another story.  Anyway, he laughed and sympathized and we chatted for a while about life, the universe and everything, including his recently renewed creative efforts in SL.  You might have read on Don’s blog that he’s been taking a bit of a break.  But he’s back now, creative juices flowing, and he’s getting busy. So I Tried to Look Preppy

Valiant and UBUWavie Haller of Valiant has been getting a bit of press recently, and for good reason. He’s a bit of the new kid on the block in men’s fashion. Thing is, the new kids get older and wiser and he’s been no exception.

As part of the aging process, Wavie’s decided to retire a few of his earlier designs and offer them as freebies. That’s how I got my hands on the Relax Blue Shirt I’m wearing. There’s currently also a pink v-neck t and a light gray cardigan in the freebie bag, available on the front counter at his main store. These shirts all have tiny flaws, ranging from slightly mismatched seams to blurry edges, but most aren’t noticeable unless you stare. The only big complaint I had was over the length — most shirts were short even on the jacket layer. I had to dig a bit before I found the Brown D&G Pants to go with them. They’re from Jonquille Noir on the 3rd floor at GNUBie, in a pack of assorted Men’s clothing. (more…)

Casual Browns @ Alphamale

wood.jpgThing is, sometimes you just want simple. Simple and comfortable. Simple and comfortable and quality. It’s the last one that’s often the difficulty. Understandably, great designers tend to tackle difficult things — complex pieces with many layers and brocades and stripes and often prim add-ons. And, yeah, we love ‘em. But sometimes, you just want simple.

So here’s a set. Alphamale is an up-and-coming shop, maybe even an up-market-and-coming-on-strong shop. Yelmer Pfeffer is the main alphamale and his partner, Mariska Simons, runs Blacklace next door. They’ve been up and running for months, but when I stopped in this week, they were going through an impressive and extensive remodelling and an expansion that included culling older pieces with which Yelmer was no longer satisfied. He was wearing some excellent blue jeans with a blue t-shirt. I turned immediately to the vendors but bought this colour instead. It’s a set they call, simply enough, Brown Jeans with Two Tees. And the contents are exactly as stated. (more…)

Just Starting Out: Part II (Redux)

gnubiepartdeux.pngI take a break for a week and an entire store moves on me. The GNUbie Store decided to up and move from Indigo to Powder Mill. It got a makeover and an upgrade in the process though, so its all good :) . Unfortunately, some of the older stuff from the original store is no longer available.I’m guessing that the designers are no longer active and couldn’t move their things. Luckily, all of my old favorites from Rebel Hope, Bryce Tully, and Torrid Midnight are still there though. The best part is that there are new items and new designers — more fun freebies for everyone!

Both Adam ‘n Eve and Fleur are offering skins in their stalls at 1L apiece, with some of them free if you are under 30 days old. I’m wearing the Fleur Vivant Bronze Newbie skin. A word of warning (though you can’t see it here) is that most of these skins come with a clothing under layer as part of the skin. If I weren’t wearing the long sleeves undershirt, the undershirt from the skin would peek out under the sleeves of the the tee. Another GNUbie veteran, Fallingwater Cellardoor, has decided to add her awesome freebie painter shoes (which were already available at Shiny Things) to the GNUbie collection as well. (more…)

Just Starting Out: Part II

In my last post I featured some of my favorites at Free Dove so in this post I’ll focus on the GNUbie Store. Unlike Free Dove, GNUbie is organized by designer. Each one has a stall, wall, or display and whatever items they have offered are available together. What you find and at what price varies from designer to designer, but everything there is either free or $1L and modifiable.

Rebelation JeansOne of my favorite freebie jeans, especially when I first started, is available on the second floor of GNUbie. There are six different types of Rebelation jeans from Rebel Hope of RH Designs, available in black and blue, with various tattoo-like designs and patterns on them. The textures aren’t flat and dull, but actually look like jeans. The seams though, admittedly, need a more than just a little bit of work. All in all these are a solid set of jeans that go for 0L. Out of the box, I found these jeans are tad bit on the baggy side, so I went and modified them down to a shape I preferred. (more…)

Just Starting Out: Part I

To start off, I figured I’d do a two-parter post where I go back to the basics. When I first jumped into this virtual world, I followed a few online guides to help me “get started.” Two stores always came up as the places to go: Free Dove and GNUbie. These two places are are pretty solid start. I’ll focus on some of my favorites at Free Dove in this post, and follow up on my favorites at the GNUbie store in the next one.

Free Dove is organized as a bunch of tables with signs on them. The store is pretty self explanatory and everything is free — zero lindens. “Men’s Clothing” and “Men’s Shoes” are both to the left of the teleport spot. As a word of warning, Free Dove, unfortunately, is for “humans” only so if you’re trying to be a stylish anthro make sure you throw on a normal skin before you go there. (more…)

Shirts @ Style Starts Here

paisley.jpgWell-made and inexpensive. When clothes fit that description, what more do you need to say?

Usually nothing. But in the case of Simone Stern’s “Style Starts Here” collection, that’s only the beginning. Let’s begin at that beginning. This paisley shirt, for instance (as usual, do please click the photos for a more detailed version). To make such a complex pattern work on a second life garment is outrageously ambitious: muted contrasts, shading and, on top of all that, seam-matching. As in a real life shirt, it’s not possible to make the pattern continuous across seams, but some shirts’ seams will work while others won’t and, of course, the shading and wrinkles must look consistent across the parts. There is no way that this shirt should work as well as it does. But it does. For £50. Every shirt I’ll show you is £50. (more…)

Designer review: Akeyo

Akeyo_Brown.jpgA few days ago I got myself a freebie Benz from Akeyo, probably the best free car in SL at the moment. A couple hours later I get an IM asking if I was interested in covering her clothing line. I ported in to check out the store and after looking at the items there, of course I was.

The store offers a variety of clothing and accessories, mostly using sculpties for the prim parts. She sticks to using sharp and bright textures and offers her stuff for reasonable (though not excessively cheap) prices.

The items I’m covering in this review are the shoes, hoodies and caps. The shoes and caps are both offered in 2 lines currently. For the shoes that’s slippers and sneakers, for the caps that’s jeep caps and baseball caps.

New Glasses @ primOptic

hawke.jpgBased on the glasses worn by Bruce Willis in “Hudson Hawke,” this is Hawke by Nibb Tardis (as always, click the photo to see a larger version). Lots of companies make great glasses and sunglasses in Second Life. But you could not compile a shortlist of the finest without including primOptic. As soon as you try on a demo, you are struck by the quality. These glasses are not nice pictures clipped from the internet and slapped onto a stretched cube on your face. Mssr Tardis handcrafts these from lots of tiny prims, expertly and precisely shaped, tapered and positioned. They are the work of a craftsman, an architect.

Yet an amazing amount of control has been handed to us, the wearers. (more…)

Coats and Jackets @ Cubic Effect

CubicEffect_Military_1.jpgI’ve written reviews of coats and jackets that have lots of prim attachments with high-tech gizmos or buckles. But mirai Jun’s creations for Cubic Effect are remarkable for their use of organically-shaped sculpted prims. And these aren’t exactly attachments or ornaments, but rather the attachments are the coat or jacket, as with that Soreal sporty jacket reviewed by Daman a few days ago. You may have some hair that’s similar… where a hair ‘garment’ lays down some basic colour on your scalp in strategic locations and then a prim attachment forms the main part of the hair. These jackets and coats are a little bit like that.

CubicEffect_Military_2.jpgMy favourite is the military jacket. Look at that collar, lazily flapping back from that wide open neck. Wonderful! It’s an attachment to the spine and provides some of the shape of the coat’s back as well as the collar. There’s also a sculpty attachment to your pelvis that provides the skirt. If you’re ‘blessed’ with a slow enough computer or internet connection, you’ll be able to see it ‘bloom’ in that way sculpted prims have of first rezzing as a little lump and then unfolding themselves into their proper shape. Then there are also prim versions of bunched up sleeves. The jacket-layer garment really is only there to lay down a stretch of similar colour to the boring areas. All the pockets and other main features are done with (or on) the prims. (more…)

Leather Jackets @ Sey

sey_riders_blue.jpgOne of my self-imposed rules was I would never buy anything with a skull on it. I guess such rules are made to be broken. Risey Arai signed that rule’s death warrant by creating the some of the best leather jackets on Second Life. I’m not a big leather jacket fan and until this week, I felt pretty certain that Nihil Graves’s Tiger Tank jacket was the only leather jacket I’d ever need. Well, this week I bought four leather jackets. And two of them feature skulls prominently. But, oh my, they’re worth breaking a few rules for when you look at the details.sey_riders1.jpg

I bought two versions of the Rider’s Jacket. The jackets are primarily black leather, but the top of the chest, back, shoulders and sleeves feature a panel of colour. Three of them are rich colours: blue, purple and red, and the other three are more muted: a drab green, grey and brown. On to these coloured panels, front and back, is printed the aforementioned skull design, somewhat faintly as if it’s wearing off. There is also writing, but it’s hard to make out. The brand name Sey is there, with bunches of numbers and then the sim location of the main store, Honmoku. The leather is nicely rippled with the attendent highlights and shadows and the coloured panel has a marbled-effect texture. In extreme close-ups, the resolution is lower than you’d like, but it only really shows on the zip running down the front of the jacket. It’s not a big problem, though, there’s a lot of other stuff to look at. (more…)

Designer Review: Sports jacket and Halo sunglasses by Soreal

SOREAL_001.JPGA few months ago I had the pleasure of meeting Kwamey Pinion at Booperfunk Island, probably the biggest store in Second Life dealing in dreadlocks, afros and other African ethnic hairstyles. Back then he had released his first hairstyle, a rasta bun, which I sadly didn’t buy. Then, last week a reader contacted us to tell us of an interesting store he found. Heading over there I noticed that the person running the store was the same I met earlier.

Currently, Soreal doesn’t have a huge gamma yet. In fact, they only sell 2 items as of yet: a sports jacket and a pair of sunglasses. His first shoes are under construction and I was already shown a work in progress version of them inworld. Which was enough to convince me to save up some more money for their release. (more…)

Jackets / Outfits @ TheZoo

SubFront.jpgTheZoo features what look to be Army Surplus outfits created by Froddo Beck. The one that first caught my eye is called ‘Sub.’ The texture is more photo than hand-drawn. It’s got some nice detail in the buttons, straps and loops and, in person, a surprisingly convincing rubbery look to it. What really got my attention, though is the prim collar. Rather than the usual section of a tube, this one has a sort of reverse curve at one end, matching the way that the jacket’s neck opening is upright on one side and flopping down on the other. Very clever. It’s also got some nice details on it… the outside surface has some metal loops and a string that fits through it to draw it closed. (more…)

Staff Jacket @ S.I.C

radialblur.jpgFrom another Japanese dystopia, here’s a fine jacket bristling with prim add-ons. It’s by mk Curtiz and it’s called the S.I.C Staff Jacket. S.I.C apparently stands for Science Innovation Company. But it will also serve to remind you of the name of the sim, “sick.”

The jacket is available in three colours, dark green, grey and red. Allthough I love the dark ones, the prim attachments will show up better against a red background, so let me take you on a guided tour of that version of this complex piece of clothing.

New Shoes @ Perfect Tomorrow and Shiny Things

murphys_brown.jpgYou only have to glance once at the Linden template maps for textures to understand why it is that shoes, like skins, tend to be more expensive than shirts, jackets, trousers or even whole suits. A few names have become legendary for their mastery of the challenging art form of the humble shoe. Today we’ll look at the work of two designers. The first one is the legendary Fallingwater Cellardoor of Shiny Things, who has recently released a wonderful new line of shoes called Murphys. The second is someone you are far less likely to have heard of.

pt_orangetar.jpgIt’s a new name in shoe design, though it hasn’t exactly risen overnight. Perfect Tomorrow so far has only one basic design for men although it’s available in a huge variety of colours. When I first visited the shop a month or so ago, there were no demos available, though copies of the sculpted prim numbers were out on display. That has changed now and when I contacted Perfect Tomorrow about this review, I encountered a one-person band who had just overhauled the sizing of the whole product range completely and was now working through the customer list, sending each person updated versions of the shoes that they’d bought. The new versions are worth writing home about.

Here’s the bad news: I think you’re going to want to buy both designers’ shoes. Let me tell you why.

New: Camo Army Hoodie by Moth Sewell of Inone Style

Camo_Hoodie_Review.JPGLast weekend I got a notice from one of the fashion groups I’m in: 4 New Unisex Hoodies. In real life I wear hoodies just about every day, so of course I was interested.

I never heard of Inone Style before, but considering the Second Life age of the designer I think that’s forgiveable. Moth’s profile says he joined Second Life in September 2007. This weekend he released the following 4 hoodies to increase the catalogue of his relatively small but beautiful store: a camo hoodie with Army print, a brown hoodie with skull print, a striped blue hoodie and lastly a checkered grey hoodie.

The hoodies use the jacket layer, and are accompanied by a undershirt. The prim hoods come in two presets: male and female. They’re also modifiably so you can turn them into a perfect fit. The hoodies cost 125 L$ each, a very reasonable price if you ask me. They come as Copy/Modify/No Transfer. (more…)

Army Tank Boy by June Dion @ Bare Rose

Camo_Review_SMALLER.JPGHello all, my name is Daman Tenk, and this will be my first Second Life fashion review. As my first review pick I chose a set called Army Tank Boy, by June Dion of Bare Rose. Just in case you never heard of it before, Bare Rose is a store that offers clothing for both men and women, divided in many categories. Most outfits are for sale at very reasonable prices, especially considering the quality of June’s work.

This outfit is available in the men’s casual section for 130 L$ and comes with pants, skirt layer belts, three jacket layer tank tops, one shirt layer tank top, several prim pockets, and a bullet necklace for the finishing touch. The outfit is set as modify/no copy/transfer. (more…)

Inexpensive Treasures (1) @ Westy’s

janitor_left.jpgjanitor_right.jpg
Here’s a piece I love, a stereotypical Japanese work cover-all, apparently called a Tunagi. Your typical westerner making work-clothes wouldn’t be able to resist grunging it up with grease and sweat and so on. This one is shiny and spotless. You have to love it — it’s so ordinary and yet so illustrative of the difference between our cultures. And so unfashionable, it’s cult fashionable. You can see Yoshimi Zabelin’s talent in the shading and shadows; this is no amateur production. It comes in three different colours, but the orange is probably the most … industrial. Each color is — get this — 5L$. No, there’s no discount available for the fatpack. The broom is free at any number of campsites, I’m wearing a generic t-shirt underneath and the customizable name tag is by elka Lehane of [BF] Boing Fromage for 1L$.

sandshack_snapshot_001.jpgDuring the first week in September Emma Gilmour unveiled Sand Shack’s new main store with the grand opening of the Caribe retail district in the Lions Shore sim. Other stores and kiosks include products from artilleri, Boing Fromage, I <3 Juicy, miw and Random. On opening day I went down to window shop and was pleasantly surprised by the area altogether. The tropical atmosphere took me back to a time spent walking along dusty Caribbean streets amidst colourful buildings and lazy royal palms, ultimately resurrecting the tune to a great Bobby Darin song. Good times.

Save for several pieces from artilleri and Random a majority of the products were geared towards female avatars, so, I wandered while my friend cooed at all the goodies and shopped. For quite some time now Emma Gilmour’s Surf Couture line has been synonymous with beach fun and boho attire, and it wasn’t long after the new surroundings that Sand Shack Surf Co. rolled out with a men’s line in Emma’s usual colourful palette. “When I was new, I was photosourcing clothes for both men and women, but when I got my tablet and started hand-drawing everything, the creative juices seemed to be sending me more towards female clothing. Before I knew it, that was all I was selling. So I had been meaning to sit myself down and create some stuff for men … but never got around to it until recently.” (more…)

Interview: Broder Kubrick of BroGear

brogear_snapshot_001.jpgIn 1949 George Orwell’s cautionary tale against totalitarianism and democratic socialism was published. Within the world of the novel 1984, social and political upheaval have resulted in a dystopian future. Institutional propaganda, complete subordination to political cause, sexual oppression, concentration camps and leader worship (Big Brother) weigh down on the masses. Personal expression is a crime.

Though his main store location is influenced by the novel and movie, Broder Kubrick’s creations attempt to break away from the standard issue to provide his own brand of gritty clothing and accessories in BroGear. The derelict shop is situated within an isolated, stone-set market amid large Stalin-esque banners of Broder, His Supreme Imminence, that warn “Big Broder is Watching” and “War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength”. As shoppers peruse the goods within, loudspeakers intermittently blaze with news of wartime progress. (more…)
