Don’t ever let Ryan know, dear reader, but our night out on the clubs and its aftermath have indeed left me more than somewhat intoxicated and tired from the top of my spinning head to the tips of my danced-out feet. If only these Supersprints by Detour Sideways had come to my attention sooner! Their clean minimalist lines and scuff-resistant shiny exterior might even have escaped the notice of franks places’s style police for formal wear (well, perhaps not the pink ones). I could have used their soft yet firm support on the dance floor; and, as you may know, there are times when I certainly could have used the ability to run swiftly.

The yacht club is a venerable institution among the monied classes. If nothing else, it provides an outlet for spending said money, drinking liquor, lounging about on hot lazy summer afternoons, and dancing away the evenings, as immortalized in Fats Waller’s 1938 song “Yacht Club Swing.” Not to mention providing a good place to keep one’s yacht, or yachts. I’m just hoping that upcoming regatta doesn’t turn into a three-hour tour. Please don’t let me end up on an island populated by the Skipper, his Little Buddy and the rest of their motley crew (although, in all honesty, I wouldn’t mind a weekend swapping style tips with Ginger Grant). Fortunately, you don’t have to maroon yourself on an uncharted desert isle just to be one of the Idle Rich. In swaffette Firefly’s new “SF Design Henley” outfit, you too can be Thurston Howell, III. All you need to provide is your very own Lovey. (more…)

So summer is in full swing for me. That means humidity and frequent thunder storms. But back home, on the other coast, summer means sun, beaches, and kicking back to relax and take care of things you forgot over the last few months. So I brushed the dust off my inventory and took a look at what freebies have been sitting there unused and untouched.
First off is a bit of beach wear from Neko Gear. This stuff is at least a good month old, gathering dust in my inventory as I’ve got way too much swim wear. Some of this stuff was covered by Adaire and Gecko over at free*style about a month ago. I’m wearing the beach towel freebie over my shoulder (you can lay it down too), along with a beach shirt, board shorts, and flip flops. I tend to avoid wearing logo branded freebies just because I don’t like being a walking advertisement, but the ones here aren’t that bad or overly flashy. They all kinda just fit together. Out of the box, the flips are a tad small but all of this stuff is modifiable and thus can be resized to fit rather easily. (more…)

I was in a barren and empty sim, the hour was late and it was dark (I had forced midnight) when a mysterious message urgently demanded my attention. “Your mission, should you choose to accept it: for the next issue of Second Style, highlight some of the best individual designs in SL fashion of the last twelve months. This IM will self-destruct in ten seconds. Nine. Eight….”
I logged out quickly, but not before triggering a sly smile ( }:-> ). I knew that this assignment would challenge me like no other, and I would have to rely on all my skills and training. How to select just a handful of items from the many released over the past year? It seemed…impossible.
Hopefully my superiors will agree that I have succeeded. All of these creations epitomize the best of what SL design has to offer. In chronological order by month of release: (more…)

Reaction has an Easter Sale going on from the 19th, until the the 23rd of March. All items will be 50L or less, so a shirt, pants, and shoes set will definitely be under my weekly limit of $150L. The Alternation crew (Reaction, Reaction Girl, and WRONG) have a long history of generous freebies. Back around Christmas time last year, they released a series of daily gift freebies. In addition, the owner of Reaction, Radical Twang, was handing out gift cards up to $1500L for relatively minimal work. The giftcards were even more useful when the Alternation crew pulled a Crazy Day sale in early February, featuring prices as low as $3L for a shirt and $8L for shoes. Needless to say, I’ve picked up quite a few Reaction items over time.
Reaction is primarily a surf shop, so expect a wide variety of board shorts. In the picture to the left, I’m wearing the Skullies boardies with a black Rashie. All of Radical’s textures are created from scratch, and his detail work shines through. He’s managed to find just the right amount of shading and wrinkling so that his clothes look neither flat nor photo-sourced. (more…)

Based on the glasses worn by Bruce Willis in “Hudson Hawke,” this is Hawke by Nibb Tardis (as always, click the photo to see a larger version). Lots of companies make great glasses and sunglasses in Second Life. But you could not compile a shortlist of the finest without including primOptic. As soon as you try on a demo, you are struck by the quality. These glasses are not nice pictures clipped from the internet and slapped onto a stretched cube on your face. Mssr Tardis handcrafts these from lots of tiny prims, expertly and precisely shaped, tapered and positioned. They are the work of a craftsman, an architect.
Yet an amazing amount of control has been handed to us, the wearers. (more…)

When I visited SOREAL in the past days, I already got a sneak peak at the upcoming sneaker design. I remember I was quite impressed at first sight already, even if they were still not finished. Now that they’ve been released I’m even more impressed.
The sneakers share both characteristics that already made me fall in love with the jackets and sunglasses. The first is the exquisite use of sculpted prims to make the shape look as realistic as possible. The second is the scripting that’s been added to make the sneakers as easy to use as is possible.

One of my self-imposed rules was I would never buy anything with a skull on it. I guess such rules are made to be broken. Risey Arai signed that rule’s death warrant by creating the some of the best leather jackets on Second Life. I’m not a big leather jacket fan and until this week, I felt pretty certain that Nihil Graves’s Tiger Tank jacket was the only leather jacket I’d ever need. Well, this week I bought four leather jackets. And two of them feature skulls prominently. But, oh my, they’re worth breaking a few rules for when you look at the details.
I bought two versions of the Rider’s Jacket. The jackets are primarily black leather, but the top of the chest, back, shoulders and sleeves feature a panel of colour. Three of them are rich colours: blue, purple and red, and the other three are more muted: a drab green, grey and brown. On to these coloured panels, front and back, is printed the aforementioned skull design, somewhat faintly as if it’s wearing off. There is also writing, but it’s hard to make out. The brand name Sey is there, with bunches of numbers and then the sim location of the main store, Honmoku. The leather is nicely rippled with the attendent highlights and shadows and the coloured panel has a marbled-effect texture. In extreme close-ups, the resolution is lower than you’d like, but it only really shows on the zip running down the front of the jacket. It’s not a big problem, though, there’s a lot of other stuff to look at. (more…)

A few months ago I had the pleasure of meeting Kwamey Pinion at Booperfunk Island, probably the biggest store in Second Life dealing in dreadlocks, afros and other African ethnic hairstyles. Back then he had released his first hairstyle, a rasta bun, which I sadly didn’t buy. Then, last week a reader contacted us to tell us of an interesting store he found. Heading over there I noticed that the person running the store was the same I met earlier.
Currently, Soreal doesn’t have a huge gamma yet. In fact, they only sell 2 items as of yet: a sports jacket and a pair of sunglasses. His first shoes are under construction and I was already shown a work in progress version of them inworld. Which was enough to convince me to save up some more money for their release. (more…)

When Kandi Babe suggested we go on a cruise, well, I said, a cruise? In SL? Is there such a thing? Well, she just whipped out these brochures with this huge ship, a ship like I’ve never seen before. So, I thought, ok, a cruise might be nice. I mean, all this modeling work is hard you know. It would be nice to have a vacation you know. So, we signed up for a week and rented a cabin on the aftdeck and took a transport to the ship. And I must say, the brochures don’t do it justice! It’s amazing.
So ok, it’s the first day of the cruise and Kandi Baby pulls out these tennis outfits she’s packed. We need to do some sports, she says, and tennis is a good one to learn. So ok, I put on the outfit she handed me, and it’s a nice blue tennis outfit fit for a Wimbledon champ! A white and blue outfit with a tinge of light green, the blue running off the shoulders and a green swipe down the midriff on the shirt and the blue pants striped with the same green on the side. So, ok, maybe tennis would be a good sport to take up! It’s fairly early, Kandi Babe just likes to get up with the birds, and so not a lot of people are stirring yet. So we head out on deck, all decked out if you will with our tennis outfits and rackets, and Kandi Babe knows she’s seen a tennis court on the ship. Well, we headed out to the deck and started looking for the tennis court. (more…)

sachi Vixen of Adam n Eve created one of my favorite themed outfits of the last several months, the Dandy Highwayman. I love its rich color and elaborately detailed design, and oh wow but it’s fun to wear (and show off). Perhaps more subtle and restrained but certainly no less impressive and thoughtfully designed are sachi’s new Hunter Tweeds. If you’ve been trying to find the proper attire for a fox-and-hounds event at your best friend’s country manor, or just weekend outings on horseback with the ladies and gentlemen who lunch, you may need look no further. The herringbone wool fabric is realistically textured, and double black buttons are smart and stylish without calling attention to themselves. The various prim accessories finish the outfit with sophistication and bring it to life. (more…)

Due to a massive power outage in my building I was unable to access the internet. After going through the five stages of grieving (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance) I decided not to stare at my blank computer screen and went out to enjoy the Canada Day atmosphere and celebrations across the city. Canadians and Americans, please enjoy your festivities.
And now on to fashion. As always, if you have your ear to the ground and stumble across a really great designer please send me an IM. Please note that for the month of July I’m taking a break from this weekly column.
Casa Del Shai. A follow up to the suave elegance of last week’s Barong Tagalogs with a westernized twist in the Amorsolo and Luna suits. The traditional Filipino shirts have been paired with a suit jacket that has been embroidered/screen printed on the back panel and a crisp pair of matching slacks. The ensemble sells @ 600L and can be purchased in Deco (112, 150, 30).
Sale @ Indie. Don’t forget to check out Indie Rainbow’s stores in Louise and Sede di Marte before July 5th and take advantage of the liquidation sale on his hand drawn goodies for men and women. Once the sale is over his current collection will be retired.
VR Phlux. Another addition to the swing collection. “Harris” is a sharp tweed suit with shirt and tie, vest with pocket watch detail layer, jacket layer and belted “Hollywood” slacks. The suit sells for 300L at phlux (169, 163, 35).

For those who have been hiding under a rock SL turns 4 years old this week. During all of our careers there have been many ups and downs - n’est-ce pas? - as we all go through our own growing pains in this surreal virtual space.
Within this anniversary week so much is in development or has occurred in the realm of culture relating to the Men’s Second Style blog as well as resident lifestyle in general.
Face of Asia Model Competition. Anyone who can coax those sliders in appearance mode to create a beautiful or handsome Asian shape is encouraged to enter this cultural modeling contest brought to us by the Asian Designers Summit. Contest guidelines can be found at the Women’s Second Style blog or by visiting the Men’s Second Style office, Casa Del Shai, Earthtones Boutique, Muse or Nicky Ree’s Boutique in-world. Face of Asia is open to all residents. Round 1 submissions close June 27, 2007 at midnight SLT.
Nora Body Skins by Sezmra Svarog. Since she teased audiences in mid-April with a sneak peak of her new generation of male skins in development I have been eagerly awaiting the release of her skins. This week, Sezmra displayed a more detailed vision of her skins - each appealing to a different segment of skin consumers: the toned “Hunter” and the svelte “David”. Nora is also offering up some SL4B freebies @ her shop and promises a rehaul of her store and sim.
Second Love Magazine. Tya Fallingbridge and Daphne Molinari announce this week the launch of Second Love Magazine on July 1, 2007. Second Love will be monthly PG publication covering a variety of issues affecting straight and gay residents whether in single, coupled or friendship relationships. The magazine will be accessible in-world and online. The launch party is set for July, 1st @ 7 P.M. SLT game time at Schmooze, Pixel Dreams (12, 146, 21).
As a reminder, if you are aware of any new designers or products that you discover during the week and would like to see included in this segment please look me up and IM me in-world.

“Ten-HUT!”
DE Designs’ newest release is Military Brat, a stylish takeoff of camo wear in three colors– “Urban” (blue/gray), “Desert” (tan/olive), and “Recon” (black/gray). Designer DoC Eldritch has created a fine interplay of texture that fits into a coherent whole. The pants are a low-contrast camo design with a coarse mesh weave. The fabric must not hold together very well, as a rip in one thigh is repaired with grommets and lacing, and the other thigh is repaired with a bandanna tied in place. The wrinkles in the pants and bandanna are particularly well done. Another bandanna, riveted in place, patches up rips near the waistband of the pants, and continues around the front to act as a second belt. And on that belt– D-rings! God, I’m a sucker for metal in an outfit. (more…)

I’ll keep this short and sweet. This week marked the appearance of some really fun, satirical and all around distinguished articles on the men’s fashion scene. Being a joker-at-heart, as soon as I saw Gadget Gobo and Caroline Apollo’s comical devices I ran down to their stores to take a peek for myself - laughing all the way. Sometimes we all need a little ludicrously funny distraction for our wardrobes. As always designers for all categories of items put out primo content whether you seek the ludicrous or the distinguished that we just can’t help but share with the masses.
While chasing answers to a reader inquiry I had the great fortune to stumble across a skin which may be something worth investigating for those looking for a non-athletic touch.
Dive in and see if there’s something within that suits your tastes.

When I first entered SL some of the first clothes I bought were from a small store inside the Miau Haus in Yelas. I browsed around while the designer was in-store setting up new vendors. There were some hoodies, a tee and a pair of jeans that caught my eye and I ended up buying them. Some of the best purchases I’ve made in SL. In the following weeks I ended up rotating between these and other items in my meager wardrobe. What continues to appeal to me about the clothes are their finishing details (the hood attachment and neck cinch strings), the sleeve extensions in the glove layer, and lastly - but certainly my favourite - the uneven crosshatch strokes in the base fabric. The slick texturing technique created a visual impact that reminded me of the comic book art I digested in my youth.
As such, it didn’t surprise me to find out that Donovan Brennen of GearShift is a hopeless comic book junkie. And lucky for the SL male population Donovan has super powers of his own - a metahuman ability to turn pixels into sharp urban apparel. (more…)

If upon hearing any reference to the rules of Fight Club your mind first runs on Winter Moon’s Tyler Durden collection you are an official Second Life addict and a complete Arbel Vogel junkie. There’s no hope for you. Your only consolation is in the fact that it’s time to get your next WM fix. Whether you’re riding your Vespa down the narrow cobblestone of Parioli, letting your Ducati loose on the streets of Barcola or lounging at The High Society in Otherland you’re sure to streamline your performance with these sleek Cycle jackets.
Arbel has christened the year with a unisexy collection of 3 sets of rugged mandarin-collar leathers. The initial aesthetic appeal of the jackets lies in the attentiveness in detailing. The Specialty leathers in particular are unique - layered with brusque motifs: biting metal, unabashed nationalism and the restlessness of the witching hour. The artistic approach somewhat softens the harshness, attributing to the gender flexibility of the clothing. (more…)

Designer Sol Columbia does most of her work for the ladies, but here’s something for for the guys as well. You can get a jump on the winter sports season with this great new outfit she calls “Ski Patrol.” The pack includes a sporty ski patrol sweater (men’s and women’s versions included) and faded, beat-up jeans (unisex). The sweater is really fun and original, with a great authentic design and nice woolly texturing–you can almost feel warmer already. The jeans have a fantastic “lived-in” vibe. They ride low on the hips but still work well on a guy’s shape.
This set is perfect for a day out on the slopes or relaxing with a hot toddy in front of a roaring fire back at the chalet. Accessorize with your own hat, gloves, or scarf, depending on how cold you get. As a bonus, you also get a rideable snowboard, Sol’s own original design! The set is available for L$295 at Luminosity (Ibgo 62, 43, 30).
