Building the perfect neko

neko_picnic.jpgI had a hell of a time finding a neko skin I liked.  I looked all around, asked people for recommendations, tried on demos like you wouldn’t believe.  My thing was, I wanted a skin that, kitty markings aside, would also look good as a skin on its own.  I wanted a skin that still left me looking like Ryan, but not Ryan turned feral.  What about neko tattoos? you may be wondering.  You’re right, some of those look very good, and of course the big plus is that you can wear them with your favorite skin.  This approach may well work for you.  But I wanted markings on my face, too, and what if I wanted to wear them with some specific clothing and I had a layer conflict?  What if I wanted to wear other tatoos?  What if I wanted to wear them with underwear?  (Nekos get nasty, too, you know.)  Maybe, if they came on all the clothing layers…  No, what I really wanted was a skin.  A really good neko skin. Industrial steampunk, now with crunchy neko bits

steampunk_neko_full.jpgBefore we start, you must first know that my friend Zazen always has the coolest toys imaginable. This is important information for you to know. So, the other day I was hanging out on my mile-high work platform (okay, it’s about 600 meters or so) when I heard a thump. This was quickly followed by a muttered “Oh dear.” A quick camera check showed that, as you may already have suspected, Zazen was indeed hovering just beneath the platform, where he had unwittingly bonked his head trying to fly up and see if that dot at altitude on the minimap might be me. It’s always nice to have the opportunity to catch up with Zazen–any excuse will do, really–and as I mentioned there’s the cool toy factor. This time my notice was irresistibly drawn to his boots, which were impressively constructed and animated with some really spiff effects. I had to know, so I asked. A landmark was immediately forthcoming. I went, I saw, I shopped. And here we are. (more…)

Discord Nightmare City Treasure Hunt

Discord Nightmare CitySo, the Discord Nightmare City sim is amazingly awesome. First off, its just got awesome atmosphere — divided into smaller streets and sections each with its own feel and type of product. I will admit, though, it is a little bit tough to move around since there is no flying and no teleporting. Second — the prices are rather low. The most expensive items I saw were AOs and extremely prim-heavy outfits, including typing animations, at 250L. And third (and definitely most important) the content is just frickin’ awesome.

Before I prattle on about the owner and his stuff, let me get my announcement out of the way. Starting, well, since the first of the month there’s a hunt/prize/whatever ya wanna call it at the sim. Currently, there are two outfits (one for a guy, and one for a girl) scattered throughout the sim as 12 heart shaped boxes. These boxes are tough to find. Which is why you have a lot of time to find em. Six boxes are parts for the guys, and six boxes are parts for the girls. The six parts for the guys include jacket, pants, prim skirt, left sleeve, right sleeve, and collar/tie. All together, they form the sei-sou outfit (in hana orange) that I’m wearing in the picture. Hunts liked these are planned as part of the future of the sim, so there will always be somethin goin on. (more…)

Review: Kalico Kreations by Kenny Sleeper

welcome_sign.jpg“They say the city of Kalico was once an industrial hub, where most people in the country congregated, worked, and lived.  I, personally, find that extremely damn hard to believe anyone came to this city because they wanted to.  They came because they had to.  They came because everything was here.  Everywhere else had nothing!  Nothing at all!  It’s like someone decided to slap every technological, social, and business aspect of living into one giant concrete hell.  We don’t know much about what life was like before ‘it’ happened, but we definitely know what ‘it’ is.  Everyone does.  It’s the stuff of stories that parents would tell their little kittens so that they would sleep at night.  But ‘it’ definitely happened, and ‘it’ destroyed everything.”  –  So begins the roleplay info notecard for Kenny Sleeper’s new-and-in-progress “Kalico City.”  I was familiar with some of Kenny’s emo/neko/punk designs from his shop Kalico Kreations, and Aidan featured some of his designs in a previous post, but his new venture sounded intriguing (although I find I don’t have enough time to devote the amount that serious RP calls for).  When he mentioned that he had also been creating some new designs so players can trick themselves out in style, it was clear that a visit to Kalico City was called for.  Who knew what grungy, post-apocalyptic wonders would await? Art Deco & Oh Goes Neko @ LPP

LPP_Deco.jpgMen’s liberation time! The extremely talented aoimizuno Meili of LPP (le petit prince) created these wonderful Art Deco / Valve-Tech attachments with women in mind. In fact, they’re just a small part of a collection called ‘Digital Doll.’ But most of the items in the series aren’t really gender-specific and they are gorgeous.

There are several pieces to talk about in the first photo (as usual, be sure to click on it to enlarge). Let’s start with the Art Deco Headset (180L$). I don’t want to know how many prims are in there; I probably can’t count that high. The detail is amazing, but it’s the overall feel of smooth clean parallel precision that will win you over. The headphones attach to your ear, so your nose is free for your glasses. The glasses I’m wearing look like part of the set, but in fact they’re my trusty old primOptic Arctics, with the colour scripting utilized to match the LPP stuff (set frame colour 1 to ’sienna’ and frame colour 2 to ‘dark grey’ if you’re following along at home). New (at one time): Man in Black and Masked Assassin by BareRose

Snapshot_010.pngSculpties abound in this pair of outfits designed by June Dion for Bare Rose. A casualty of my break, these outfits don’t really count as new anymore, but look at the pictures. They deserve coverage.

I was unimpressed with the first sculptie attachments to clothing. Bell sleeves, flared cuffs– what could sculpties do for fashion that couldn’t be accomplished with regular prims? Well, June showed me. In this first outfit, Man in Black, the hood comes in both regular and neko, the shape suggesting cat ears beneath. It’s a look that’s not replicable with any method other than sculpties. Maybe there’s something to these prims after all.

New: Vampire slayer gear @ Neko Gear

slayer_belt_set.jpgI have a confession to make:  I’ve never seen a single episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”  There, now you know.  They say confession is good for the soul.

Recently I had the opportunity to chat with Neko Gear designer DarkLour Watanabe, and I asked him about his newly released Slayer Gear.  What made him think of vampire slayer gear as part of his line of neko designs?  “Well, it’s Halloween and I was like, ‘Hmm, gotta make something [for] Halloween.’  I just started getting into the SL role-play sims and there’s tons of Vampires (my girl’s a Vampire, by the way–she loves this set.  LOL  I joke about when she hugs me, that she has to watch out for the garlic) and tons of Neko and Humans and Demons–well, lots of stuff.  So I thought, ‘Hmm, lemme make some slayer gear.’  I did a little searching, [I] see there’s not too much of that and thought, ‘Hmm, I’m going to have some fun!’  So [I] made the boots.  Then it evolved into ‘These look cool, lemme make some more things,’ and hence a slayer belt and leg strap set.  Then why not some props?  Thus Neko Gear’s Slayer Gear.”  :) (more…)

New: Neko island gear @ BroGear

neko_islander_full.jpgHe barely remembers being on the ship any more–it was too long ago, and he was too young.  It’s hard to know what to make of the confusing memories of being in the great wooden box, floating on the water, surrounded by it on all sides.  The feeling he has in the memories seems to him something like the way he feels when he’s safe at home in the tree houses, but not nearly so pleasant, and out in the middle of water.  This he does not understand.  After all, none of them care much for water, except to drink.  Falling into pools of it is very unpleasant, not that he ever does that any more–he suddenly feels much more powerful and graceful now than he did before, his footing more sure–and crossing the great expanse of water that surrounds their little ball of land is…not forbidden so much as inconceivable.  Why forbid it?  It would be like saying, “You shall not walk to the Moon.”  What difference would that make? (more…)
