St. Patty’s Day Freebies

waking up green and confused... ah.. St. Patrick's Day So supposedly the pope says St. Patrick’s Day was the 15th, because of Holy Week. The Dropkick Murphys say its the 17th cuz of their show. So I figured I’d play it safe — wear green and get wasted from the 15th to 17th. Now, sitting on my ass unsure how to get up, I decided to try and remember how I ended up here. I’m wearing the Fleur newbie skin in Buff, available for 1L at GNUbie or for free if you’re under 30 days old. The shirt and pants, which I haven’t changed in three days, are from Stellar Designs, and available as part of the March group gift. The shoes… well shoe.. I don’t know where the other went.. is from Free Dove. I tinted the (surprisingly) modifiable Anjo’s adorables blue camo shoes so that they were green. Socks are from Arai, available in the store as a pack called daily socks. The hair though.. I don’t know what happened. I could have sworn I had Platinum hair when I started drinking Saturday (ETD’s Sleek, $1L) but I guess I decided to tint it at some point. I picked up the hat off a leprechaun at the House of Nyla.. or at least I thought it was a leprechaun.. except they were big, and on a sign. And the tattoos.. well.. those weren’t there Saturday either either.. but I vaguely remember dropping by etchd.. I wonder if lasering off whatever else is on me is gonna be a freebie too…

Note to self: Next year lay off the green booze… (more…)

New: Wearing the green @ Gaslights Emporium

shamrock_collection_full.jpgThe wearing of green has been associated with the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day since the 19th century, and the tradition is followed today not just on the Emerald Isle but around the world.  Vincente Shepherd’s Victorian steampunk stamp is clear on his new “Shamrock Collection,” just released at Gaslights Emporium.  In its entirety, the collection is a complete ensemble, including clothing and accessories, so if you have no fear of a suit that is very green indeed, you may be able to outfit yourself from head to toe in one quick stop in Port Babbage.

The St. Patrick’s Day Green Shamrock Suit includes wool jacket with flexi tails, wool trousers, simple white formal shirt, shamrock-pattern waistcoat, and prim bow tie.  The suit’s green is the bright, fresh color of raucous meadows in spring–no quiet forest glen or moss-covered stones here.  Although stylistically similar to some of Vincente’s other, more restrained attire for Victorian gentlemen, this suit is set apart by its vibrant color and the elaborate, almost baroque pattern of the cloth used for the waistcoat, both front and back. Isn’t It Romantic? Part 3 - Valentine’s Day tees @ Civvies

vday_heart_n_skull.jpgWe’re getting close to the 14th, so this may be the last Valentine’s Day stuff I’m going to mention here, but no promises.  They’re simple pleasures this time, these long-sleeved tees by Posy Trudeau–nothing elaborate or over-the-top, just what’s needed.  The artwork is themed for V-Day, yet still a bit grungy and rough around the edges…kind of a nice change for those who might find themselves tiring of Cupids and flowers.

This design on grey is called Heart-n-Skull.  The heart is mostly black, with only a sliver of traditional romantic red.  The skull feels old and chalky, and a scattering of small crosses seem to flutter about.  The shirts have hemmed collar and cuffs, and the wrinkles in the fabric feel natural but don’t overwhelm the artwork. New: Holiday briefs @ Brief Encounter

holiday_2007_gift_pack.jpgIn what threatens to become an annual tradition if he keeps it up, Dragontat Zagato has released the 2007 edition of his holiday collection of briefs and trunks at Brief Encounter.  There are eight different designs this year: Blue Yule, Canes, Ho! (no puns, please), Xmas Mosaic, Naughty, Xmas Paisley, Xmas Plaid and Rudolph.  As always, all designs are available both brief and trunk styles, and all are provided on both underwear and pants layers, for wear with tattoos and other layering convenience.  I personally prefer the trunk style, and in my humble opinion it seems a bit more forgiving of the inevitable “tearing” at the edges as your avatar moves and assumes different poses.  In fairness, pattern stretching is arguably worse on trunks as the fabric extends onto the upper leg, so it may come down to which you find less objectionable, or (imagine!) simple personal preference. Christmas freebies

winter_outfit_full.jpgIn addition to the Santa hats at Chicanery and the Candy Cane at Gaslights Emporium, I found a number of great holiday freebies this year. One man’s no-brainer is another man’s brilliant inspiration, and rather than sit on these selfishly I decided to share just a few of my favorites here. I hit the holiday jackpot, so to speak, at Wilted Rose, where I found this Winter Outfit by Lotti Lusch for just L$1. This really is a complete outfit–the set includes pants, shirt-layer V-neck sweater with prim cuffs, chunky prim shoes, long flexi scarves in red and grey, and fuzzy ear muffs. The sweater, pants and scarves are very nicely done, with realistic fabric textures. The pants in particular look like they feel soft, comfortable and happily worn. If you only spend a single L$ on yourself this holiday season, drop it on this outfit–it’s easily the best quality-and-value bang for your Linden buck. Ladies note–the set includes a women’s version too! (more…)

New: Festive Suit for the holidays @ Gaslights Emporium

festive_suit_green_full.jpgIf you’ve been searching for a new suit that’s just right for Christmas caroling, holiday parties and other celebratory gatherings, you may need look no further than the Festive Suit, newly released by Vincente Shepherd at Gaslights Emporium.  This is a richly textured, finely tailored suit with detailing that is festive indeed, as its name promises.  This is what Father Christmas would wear to parties, if he had any time during this of all seasons to hobnob with other smart gentlemen and ladies.

The suit includes trousers, jacket, flexi jacket bottom, black waistcoat, and prim white fur collar and lapel.  I’ve added a white Victorian shirt from another of Vincente’s suits, but any simple white or contrasting shirt will do.  The jacket is blessed with an eye-catching, slightly asymmetrical placket, close-fitting flexiprim tails, and elaborately detailed fur collar and lapels. New: Christmas headgear @ Chicanery

xmas_tree_hat.jpgChicanery Turnbull has produced some of the quirkiest, most whimsical creations I’ve seen in SL.  I have four of his bouncy-spring playground animals, and they make me smile every time I see them (okay, and ride them).  In plenty of time for enjoyment throughout the Christmas season comes this collection of beautifully sculpted and textured Christmas-themed hats.  I’ll start with my favorite, which has to be the decidedly traditional-and-yet-not Xmas Tree Hat I’m wearing here.  As you can see, this is kind of a stealth tree, as the tree design doesn’t straight straight up from your head and so isn’t obvious from the front.  Don’t be surprised if you see me wearing mine around the whole month of December.  Permissions are Modify / No Copy / Transfer, so you can resize as needed and give as a gift to someone lucky.  L$1,000 worth of fun for just L$100. Men’s Corner: Halloween 2007 Roundup

halloween2006.jpgI had a great time decorating for Halloween last year.  I think one of the appeals of Second Life is the opportunity to do things that can’t be done reasonably or maybe even at all in Real Life.  In addition to going a little crazy with the house and yard decorations, I also had, um, several different costumes for myself.  You may not feel the need to go quite that far, but surely you’ll need at least one.  Here are some ideas I’m playing with for this year, some new and some that have been around for a while.  I only wore one of these last year, though, so I’m not just recycling things that are already sitting in my inventory!  I’ve tried to include a mix of clothing costumes and avatars, although some costumes can be so elaborate that the line between often seems blurred.  These are just some personal favorites of mine, and we’re by no means done for the season–you’ll undoubtedly see at least a few more seasonally themed items in the next few weeks.  :D (more…)

Commit Adultery @ Casa Del Shai

adulterer_suit_full.jpgOkay, so you got me–this suit isn’t exactly brand new.  Here’s the thing:  I had chosen it for inclusion in my “Men’s Corner” column in the Valentine’s Day issue of Second Style magazine (download Issue #7 here) and didn’t want to beat the issue to the punch.  Although Second Style is an electronic publication, there are still content, layout and other press deadlines and timelines to deal with, all kinds of things I don’t understand, and its production is far more complicated than my little blog posts…ah, technology.  Wasn’t it Egon Spengler who said, “Print is dead”?  Nearly 25 years later, and he’s nearly right.  But I wanted to feature the suit here, too.  The solution?  As with so many things in life, it’s all about the timing.  That issue should be on newsstands any minute now, so here’s a little more coverage of this great suit.  Just in time for Valentine’s Day, this is the perfect way to show your love and constancy…or lack thereof.  In this bad boy, you look like a bad boy, a little rumpled but no worse for the wear.  ;) (more…)

Valentine’s Day stress relief

For some of us, Valentine’s Day can be…traumatic.  You know who you are.  If you’re in that crowd, I want to do something a little different for you here.  Here are a few great V-Day ideas I’ve run into recently.  Hopefully, some of these will work for you.  :)  First up, a few things to wear, then on to some gift ideas.

be_mine_boxers.jpgIt’s a perennial, really.  Every year we see another round of Valentine’s Day-themed boxers for the guys–although I’m sure the girls can wear them too, yeah baby!  The catch is finding the good ones among the teeming masses.  Designer Ravelynn Templar of Liquid Velvet Studios has released her Silky Whispers boxers in two different designs for Valentine’s Day, “Be Mine” (shown at left) and “Kiss Me,” similar in design but scattered with lipstick kisses instead of red hearts.  Perfect for those special moments.  Priced at L$95 per pair and available now at Liquid Velvet Studios (Forsaken Enterprises 22, 175, 30). New: Holiday formalwear @ Blaze*

holiday_tux_jacket_silver.jpgAre you still searching for something perfect to wear to a New Year’s Eve party?  Look no further.  Not brand new, but new for this holiday season, designer Blaze Columbia has released Holiday Tux Jackets in Royal Maroon, Royal Green and Silver.  The lapels are accented with glittery highlights for some holiday glamour, and a prim boutonniere made of rose and poinsettia flowers is included (but not pictured here).  I wore the Maroon and Green jackets to various Christmas parties, but the Silver is perfect for ringing in the New Year!

These jackets are based on Blaze’s Regal Tux, just released in October.  The Regal Tux features a longer jacket than Blaze’s original Classic Tux, as well as shawl lapels.  The extra length on the jacket adds greatly to this tux’s presence, and the satin stripe on the pants has a beautiful shine that really sells the realism.  Here I am wearing the Holiday Tux Jacket in Silver with Wing Tip Shirt and Vest also in Silver.  Additional shirt/vest combinations are available in a wide variety of colors, so you can customize to get the perfect look.

The Holiday Tux is available for L$600, or in a pack with all three jackets for L$1000.  Holiday Tux Jackets only (if you already have the tux) are L$300 each, or L$500 for a pack of all three colors.  Available at Blaze Fine Fashions (Triumph 100, 137, 251).

Free! Xmas tee @ FORM Gear

skullflake.jpgZabitan Assia of FORM Gear has a special holiday gift for you.  The Skullflake Tee features Zab’s usual great fabric textures and slinky fit, plus cool holiday artwork that upon closer inspection…is kinda creepy.  And it’s free!  Just drop by the Xmas tree at The Block, just outside the FORM Gear store–you’ll know it, it’s the kind of goth Charlie Brown looking tree stuck in a burning barrel.  There’s a FORM ornament hanging from the tree which you can pay L$0 and the shirt will be given to you.  The shirt comes in both short/tucked (shirt layer) and long/untucked (jacket layer) versions.  This item is No Transfer, so you can’t give it as a gift yourself, but you can send your friends by to pick it up for themselves.

Be sure to check out the packages under the tree, as they too are gifts for you from other designers at The Block.  Also, take some time to visit FORM Gear and the other great shops while you’re there.  You’re bound to have a little holiday shopping left to do, and now is the perfect time to support these and your other favorite designers.  From my conversations with SL designers over the last few months, it’s clear that for many of them their design work is as much a labor of love as it is a business venture.  Show them a little love in return!  Isn’t that what the holidays are all about?  ;)

Available at FORM Gear (Endicott 196, 56, 507).

New: Mistletoe for Men @ Extraordinaire

mistletoe_for_men.jpgYou may have been nice all year, but Lollypop Extraordinaire knows you really wanted to be naughty.  Her new holiday ensemble is perfect for a Christmas Eve or Christmas morning surprise!  “Mistletoe for Men” includes a “Kiss Me Under the Mistletoe” tank tee, boxers, Santa hat, prim mistletoe attachment, and mistletoe kiss animation as a wearable attachment.  The boxers and hats are included in both red and green, so you can mix them up for different looks.  The mistletoe cleverly attaches by default in an especially naughty location–very appropriate, all things considered.  The hat attaches to the chin, so it won’t displace your prim hair, although you may have fun finding a hairstyle that won’t poke through the hat.  (Your best bet might be wearing a skin that includes hair as part of the skin texture.)  The white fur trimming the hat is somewhat flexi for a fun effect.

Available for L$275 for the whole set at Extraordinaire (Extraordinaire 143, 180, 23).  Also available in a version for the ladies!
