Halloween 2008 [vi] : A Very Sinister Holiday Indeed

grave_digger_at_work.jpgAlthough I had some other stuff lined up for Halloween coverage here, I fear this will be my last article for Halloween 2008 (tomorrow being the 31st and all).  I guess my plans were more than usually ambitious, and I’ve been slammed with RL work and family stuff the last several days, which has kept me away from SL more than I expected.  Such is life. Halloween 2008 [v] : Giver of the Dark Gift

blood_fountain.jpgHe saw her at dusk, standing at the Blood Fountain.  He had only just arisen for the night, and she must have known that, must have been waiting.  She was brave, or reckless, perhaps thoughtless, certainly foolish–but, however mildly curious he might be, in the end he knew it was of no importance.  She was there; that was all that mattered.  She could not possibly have made herself more an offering, no matter if she had tried for an eternity.  She was beautiful, which was pleasing if unnecessary, and she was daringly attired, which was unsurprising.  Her bared neck and shoulders amused him, her prayerful stance struck him as forceful if unoriginal, but her rosary necklace pushed him almost to the brink of laughter.  It was not that the Christian cross had no power–no, not at all.  But it was after all only a symbol, and meant little in the absence of belief, however limited.  And he did not sense from her anything like belief.  From her he sensed only anticipation, expectation…resignation?  Was it?  With most it would have been, but not with her.  Interesting.

He knew she was his when she deigned to notice his presence. (more…)

New: Entropy @ Silent Sparrow

FirstPhoto.jpgHello; my name is Mr. Oh and I’m a Sparroholic. But I have to show you this suit, even though Ryan has just written about Thorns and in his article mentioned how addicted I am.

Entropy is the latest triumph in hyasynth Tiramisu’s efforts to bring beautifully textured full-length suits to the men and women of Second Life. (As usual, please click the photos for more detail.)

amberDetail1.jpgThe piece you’ll notice first is the jacket. It’s floor-length, with a flexi-prim that flows nicely when you walk or turn or dance. There are also prim attachment sleeve-cuffs. What makes the jacket so desirable, though, is the way the light is reflected and absorbed by luxurious cloth with its wonderful and intricate patterning. (more…)

Halloween 2008 [iii] : I’m not wearing a costume,

a.k.a. Skully Slacker

skully_slacker_sit.jpgYou know the type.  You see them hanging around at family holiday parties, off to the side.  This one’s just like all the rest–he’s your typical goth/emo/slacker boy, or whatever they’re into now.  God only knows.  He looks like he might be one of your wife’s cousin’s kids.  And what’s with the attitude?  This one’s sullen, broody, moody, like he’s disappointed by the world.  You can’t get a word out of him, so don’t bother trying.  You’d think his lips really were sewn shut or something.  Don’t expect him to step up for karaoke, much less put on an actual costume.  At least he made his face up, give him credit for that.  But it’s a little too scary, really.  That kid is seriously weird.  I mean, what’s wrong with a cheap plastic mask?  And would it kill him to bob for apples with the little kids?  At least it would make his mother happy.

The thing is, he’s both more and less ”dressed up” than he realizes.  He thinks he’s so special, but really they’re all more alike than different.  He and his friends try to rebel, and the result is that you can’t tell one “rebellious” gothboy from another.  Trying not to be posers, they end up posing like crazy.  We were nothing like that when I was his age.

Kids these days…who can understand them? (more…)

Halloween 2008 [ii] : Lord of Thorns

lord_of_thorns_night.jpgI am the stone that breaks all hearts.  I am the nails that bound the Christ to his cross.  I am the arrow that pierced a King’s eye.  I am the necessary suffering that makes us all stronger. … I maintain the Great Experiment, watching over it, and sitting in judgement on all who might seek to disrupt or tamper with its essential nature.  I am the scalpel that cuts out infection, and the heartbreak that makes men wiser.  I am the Lord of Thorns, and I know you all.

New: Unseelie @ RFyre

Un01.jpgSecond-man.com regulars need no introduction to the work of Raven Pennyfeather. RFyre outfits are always richly detailed, deeply coloured, and usually full of options and amazing prim features. The latest outfit, Unseelie, is clearly and unmistakeably in that tradition.

Terribly romantic rather than pure gothic, Unseelie consists of tight leather trousers, a rough white cable-knit shirt, either a jacket with prim belt and bottom, complementary collar and shoulder-guards (with a greenish tinge); or a waistcoat, which which the prim belt and bottom also work. If you wear the jacket, prim “sleeves” join the gloves in a great design. If you wear the waistcoat, the woolen shirt has some bunched sleeve cuffs with lace extentions. The shirt also comes with a loose and gauzy collar. Socks are also included, but not boots. (more…)

Halloween 2008 [i] : Angel of Death

angel_of_death_perch_560.jpgThis year, rather than doing one big “round-up” of Halloween ideas, I thought I’d put together a series of costumes and post them individually in the several days leading up to Halloween.  I thought this would not only be more fun, but might also give you a little extra time to do your shopping.  I have no idea how many posts there will ultimately be in this series, but I’m hoping for something in the neighborhood of “several,” so check back for more! Blogger Style Throwdown: Emo under 2000L (vs. Creamy Cooljoke)

Late again due to RL interference, but still just as good as ever :P Back in the mid-80s, some hardcore punks started doing these “emotional” stage performances. As the 90s came around, they mellowed out into a more indie style. But singing emotionally and wearing geek chic wasn’t enough. Some band needed to dress in black and wear eye shadow to convey the depth of their emotion. Legions of rebellious suburban kids followed suit, the “emo” style that we all know was born. Here to explore and enjoy the fad is Creamy Cooljoke, queen of the freebies at Free*style. (more…)

New: Zneeks @ ShooZ

wickeddice.jpg

Xekello Shilova’s company, ShooZ, makes few things for men. But a number are unisex and these are some you’re going to like. Top quality graffiti for your feet, wrapped onto one of the best sculpted sneaker shapes you’ve ever seen; you can feel the sponginess of the rubber-substitute in those toe pieces.

The first ones I show you have to be Wicked Dice with their vivid colours and striped laces. Here the graffiti is wild spray acrylic paints. I seem to have gotten a shopworn demo copy, as the toes are not in pristine shape. Before I forget, I should tell you that these zneeks all have software size control. Click on a sneaker and a dialogue box appears allowing you to change its size by increments. (more…)

The last three things I bought at BareRose Tokyo

galaxy_train_ride_blue_full.jpg

Sometimes when I go shopping at June Dion’s BareRose Tokyo, it makes me crazy. That could be the lag, which can be ferocious. Or it could be that I can’t walk out of there without clicking BUY at least, oh, four or five times. I usually have a folder in my inventory that contains just the last few things I picked up there, so hopefully I’ll think of them when special occasions arise, or at least remember to try them on at some point. The very existence of this folder inspired the topic (and title) of this post. I’m only surprised it took so long. I’ve had these for at least a little while, so I won’t call them “new.” I checked last night, and there are a number of more recently released designs available now, so some of these have been moved out of the New Items towers at the front of the store. Such are the productivity and prowess of June’s CS3 monkeys.

The “Galaxy Train Ride” ensemble for men makes me happy. The name alone puts a smile on my face. I mean, honestly–can you not think of a dandy gentleman boarding a steam-powered rocket train for a quick jaunt to the center of the Milky Way? And, being a gentleman, of course he’d take along some bread, cheese, fruit and wine for a nice picnic lunch. (more…)

New: “Dysis” @ RFyre

dysis_full.jpgI wonder what it’s like inside the mind of Raven Pennyfeather? I imagine a vast, dimly lit chamber draped in heavy, dark velvet, with plush carpets underfoot. Great paned windows look out into the starry, starry night like inquisitive eyes. Scattered about are immense wooden chairs, elaborately carved and with deep upholstery, perfect for pausing to reflect on one of the many ideas that flit about quickly, glittering in the dark.

Or maybe this is just Raven’s design studio. It certainly seems that only such a place could possibly be origin to her outrageously elaborate gothic haute couture clothing designs. Her new ensemble for men is called “Dysis,” perhaps named after the Greek goddess of the hour of the sun’s setting. This would seem appropriate, perhaps on more levels than that most immediately obvious. (more…)

Lurking Bondage Pants @ Schadenfreude

goth_sleeveless.jpgUsually I try to cover new stuff, this time I’m reviewing something a little older though. Not old as in “take out the featherduster and remove the cob-webs“, but definitely not new anymore by SL standards. I saw this gothic outfit at Schadenfreude, and felt like I absolutely had to cover it. Consider it a part of me going back to my roots. After all, when I joined Men’s Second Style, I told Ryan I wanted to bring some alternative styles into the spotlight. When I look at my previous reviews however, many of them are preppy and mainstream casual instead.

The exact outfit I’m reviewing this time is called lurking bondage pants, after the style of the pants it comes with. For the record, these pants have little to no connection with the BDSM/bondage scene, and are in real life mostly a part of musical subcultures such as goth and punk.

The top is ripped open on the chest with safety pins holding the tear together. The pants come with zippers on several locations and bolts on the calves and waist. Black straps connect these bolts. Stylised flames adorn the textures of both top and pants. There are 8 versions of the outfit, with the difference in the colour of the flames. I am reviewing the black version.

Review: Styria by VincentTalent Maximus

black_city_sepulture_full.jpgAt some of his club gigs lately, my friend Kaj has been wearing some intriguing and unfamiliar jeans and shirts–detailed design work, rich colors skewing to the dark side, goth influences but nothing heavy-handed.  He was kind enough to put me in touch with the designer, VincentTalent Maximus, whose work was new to me.  Vince’s “2di4″ collection so far isn’t extensive, but it’s well executed, beautifully artistic and growing.  We were able to beat our schedules into submission and make time for an inworld chat, so in addition to my usual blather you’ll be hearing from Vincent himself regarding his design work.

“Right now I’m experimenting with a few things,” Vince says.  “I’m really into goth influences (not hard core), spend lots of time listening to dark ambient music, things like the Legendary Pink Dots.  [I] love Tim Burton and the lighter side of dark.  Vampires are great, but they should be sexy!”  I find myself in agreement with the sexy vampires idea.  After all, they’re not just Max Schreck. Chances are that you’ve at least heard of Relay For Life, the annual overnight fundraising walk benefiting the American Cancer Society. The event is designed to further awareness of cancer prevention, treatments and cures; to remember those who have been lost to cancer and celebrate survivors; and to raise money for ongoing cure research. The Second Life embodiment of this effort is Relay For Life of Second Life. In 2007, through the efforts of 40 teams RFL of SL raised a grand total of over L$118,000! (more…)

New: Batpunk Suits @ Crimson Shadow

batpunk_cardigan_blood.jpgLike (I am sure) many of you, I’ve been seeing some pretty amazing things coming from the designers and content creators associated with Rezzable.  I was lucky enough to receive the gift of a truly amazing sculpture by Light Waves, and this is just the tip of an impressive collective creative iceberg.  Located in the Rezzable sim, the goth-punk shop Crimson Shadow features clothing creations by a variety of designers, including Tox1c Chemistry and Draconic Lioncourt.

Now, hyasynth Tiramisu of Silent Sparrow is contributing her own luxe goth design sensibilities to Crimson Shadow in the form of her new Batpunk Suits.  They’re elegant, even refined in design but daring, sensual, and confident in execution.  The colors (Blue, Orchid and Blood, shown here) are strong and perhaps not for the faint of heart. Men’s Corner: Best Of

I was in a barren and empty sim, the hour was late and it was dark (I had forced midnight) when a mysterious message urgently demanded my attention. “Your mission, should you choose to accept it: for the next issue of Second Style, highlight some of the best individual designs in SL fashion of the last twelve months. This IM will self-destruct in ten seconds. Nine. Eight….”

I logged out quickly, but not before triggering a sly smile ( }:-> ). I knew that this assignment would challenge me like no other, and I would have to rely on all my skills and training. How to select just a handful of items from the many released over the past year? It seemed…impossible. ;)

Hopefully my superiors will agree that I have succeeded. All of these creations epitomize the best of what SL design has to offer. In chronological order by month of release: (more…)

New: Gothic temptations @ Crimson Shadow

adrien_close.jpgI’ve come to be a great admirer of goth clothing by several SL designers–Draconic Lioncourt, Raven Pennyfeather and kaia Ennui, just to name a very few. This isn’t a genre I explore in RL–I couldn’t possibly afford to do it properly, and on top of that I now feel I’ve been spoiled by the richness of what’s available in SL. I worry that RL designs even remotely accessible to me might earn only a “Meh” in response. This is a consequence I did not foresee when I first left Help Island. They should warn you in advance.

Ah well, screw it. RL may be day-to-day and mundane, but SL doesn’t have to be. Consider “Adrien” and “Gabriel,” two new designs created exclusively for Crimson Shadow by Draconic Kiss designer Draconic Lioncourt. A surface description would make these two ensembles sound more alike than not: jacket, shirt, vest and pants, with prim cuffs and flexi tails for the jacket. It’s true, and unsurprising, that they have some design elements in common: simple black shirt and pants; sumptuous, baroquely patterned vests; flexi falls at the wrists. Anyone can look at either and see Draconic’s loving, bloody kiss. And yet the two are at least as different as they are alike. (more…)

Byron, Warlord of the Icy North

byron_warlord2.jpgEvery once in a while, I find advertising artwork so impressive and intriguing that I feel compelled–I have no choice…cannot…resist–to yield to the twitch in my index finger and click “Buy” (or perhaps it’s “BUY!”) without further hesitation.  Such was the case with “Byron,” by designer Darwin Mizser of AVid.  There was something so very aloof and enigmatic about the model, and the clothing designs were presented so beautifully, that I found myself all but powerless to resist.  I have quite shamelessly tried to recreate here some of that air of cold mystery. New: “Timeless” @ RFyre

timeless_head_to_toe.jpg“Sweeney Todd meets Artful Dodger meets Vogue. You can wear this Whenever.” So says the notecard included with Raven Pennyfeather’s new extravagant ensemble for men, called “Timeless.” Raven has a veritable gift for creating elaborate themed clothing designs that blur the lines of era, style and gender, so I’m inclined to take her at her word on this.

Part Carpathian warlord, part vintage dandy, part bondage master, “Timeless” is not simply appropriate but de rigeur for any number of pastimes, from arguably innocent to highly questionable. As you put it on, and then begin to take layers back off, your racing mind will no doubt envision multitudinous scenarios in which to explore all it has to offer. It is the perfect expression for your more decadent, lustier side. Come, fall into that pool of hedonism with me. (more…)

New: Sprocket Suit @ Silent Sparrow

sprocket_001.jpgIt’s been months since I showed you around hyasynth Tiramisu’s Silent Sparrow collection for men. Since then, she’s released several wonderful outfits for men and remodelled her sim and shop. I’m told by reliable sources that it’s totally amazing if you use the Windlight viewer. There’s a big reopening party planned for this weekend.

The most fabulous of the new releases is a new steampunk era suit called Sprocket. It comes in 6 flavours; I chose ‘dusk,’ the purple one (but couldn’t resist some extra colours, as you’ll see). The folder contained a jacket garment with prim jacket tails for men and for women, two pairs of trousers, two shirts (on the undershirt layer) with dusk-coloured ties/cravats painted on, and a dusk-coloured waistcoat/vest (on the shirt layer). New: “Eminence” @ RFyre

eminence_cape_full.jpgIt has been with some (not insignificant) jealousy that I have followed the coverage, by other contributors to this blog, of certain elegantly gothic designs by Raven Pennyfeather.  When I saw her new release, “Eminence,” I made an executive decision: it was my turn.  It seemed only fair.  Perhaps it goes without saying that such a task should not be undertaken lightly, but just in case it doesn’t–I say so now with all sincerity.  This is a more than ambitious design effort on Raven’s part, and I think she succeeds admirably.  The challenge I face is that of presenting her work here and making sure that it looks as wonderfully dramatic to you as it did to me.  All in all, it’s not a bad problem to have.  ;) (more…)
