He saw her at dusk, standing at the Blood Fountain. He had only just arisen for the night, and she must have known that, must have been waiting. She was brave, or reckless, perhaps thoughtless, certainly foolish–but, however mildly curious he might be, in the end he knew it was of no importance. She was there; that was all that mattered. She could not possibly have made herself more an offering, no matter if she had tried for an eternity. She was beautiful, which was pleasing if unnecessary, and she was daringly attired, which was unsurprising. Her bared neck and shoulders amused him, her prayerful stance struck him as forceful if unoriginal, but her rosary necklace pushed him almost to the brink of laughter. It was not that the Christian cross had no power–no, not at all. But it was after all only a symbol, and meant little in the absence of belief, however limited. And he did not sense from her anything like belief. From her he sensed only anticipation, expectation…resignation? Was it? With most it would have been, but not with her. Interesting.
He knew she was his when she deigned to notice his presence. (more…)

Hello; my name is Mr. Oh and I’m a Sparroholic. But I have to show you this suit, even though Ryan has just written about Thorns and in his article mentioned how addicted I am.
Entropy is the latest triumph in hyasynth Tiramisu’s efforts to bring beautifully textured full-length suits to the men and women of Second Life. (As usual, please click the photos for more detail.)
The piece you’ll notice first is the jacket. It’s floor-length, with a flexi-prim that flows nicely when you walk or turn or dance. There are also prim attachment sleeve-cuffs. What makes the jacket so desirable, though, is the way the light is reflected and absorbed by luxurious cloth with its wonderful and intricate patterning. (more…)

There was a time when you could count the Great Cobblers of SL on one or maybe two hands, especially if you were talking about shoes for men. Eponymous Trenchmouth. Fallingwater Cellardoor. Funk Schnook. swaffette Firefly. To name just a few of my own longtime favorites. These days, there are a lot more designers out there doing interesting and creative work in every imaginable area, including shoes for men. To this I say: “Say thankya.”
Sculpted prims in particular are making possible sophisticated shoe designs with smoothly shaped forms that only a small handful of designers have accomplished–and this no doubt tediously–with standard prim construction. (When I consider “just” the challenge of creating the illusion of seamless texture across a complex prim object, it makes my head hurt.) Maris Kanto’s “Gallop” dress shoes are impressively sculpted lace-ups, long, sleek and elegant, perfect for pairing with formal attire, dress or business suits, or lending class to a pair of jeans. Chances are that you’ve at least heard of Relay For Life, the annual overnight fundraising walk benefiting the American Cancer Society. The event is designed to further awareness of cancer prevention, treatments and cures; to remember those who have been lost to cancer and celebrate survivors; and to raise money for ongoing cure research. The Second Life embodiment of this effort is Relay For Life of Second Life. In 2007, through the efforts of 40 teams RFL of SL raised a grand total of over L$118,000! (more…)

Let us sing the praises of the humble waistcoat, unjustly neglected for decades. Nowadays it seems that even gentlemen such as ourselves could go for years without ever wearing one except at weddings and attending Royal Ascot every year. Yet it forms a crucial article of gentlemen’s attire in other subcultures, such as the Steampunk sims. I ran across Nix Sands’ rakish Xcentricity brand first in Port Babbage and was captivated as soon as I saw them. My favourite is Poisson, here portrayed in what are indelicately called ’sooty tones.’ The celtic design is printed on the finest satin and the garment is reassuringly snug without pulling tight.
Other gentlemen may frown on it, but I love to leave my jacket behind and take the air in only my shirt sleeves and waistcoat — ah, the daring informality of it all! Clearly Mssr Sands did not have such indiscretions in mind, since the backs of his waistcoats not only lack the design, but are not even satin, merely cotton, with bunching showing clearly as a buckled strap takes up the slack fabric where the garment tapers at the waist. [I stand corrected on this point; please now see Baron Wulfenbach's comment to this article below.] Poisson is also available in indigo, olive and salmon (all of them much nicer names than ’sooty;’ …I ask you!) and costs only 80L$. You may not see them when you first enter the shop — cycle through the vendor which also sells the ‘Steamy’ and ‘Wheeler’ waistcoats, to which we turn next. (more…)

I was in a barren and empty sim, the hour was late and it was dark (I had forced midnight) when a mysterious message urgently demanded my attention. “Your mission, should you choose to accept it: for the next issue of Second Style, highlight some of the best individual designs in SL fashion of the last twelve months. This IM will self-destruct in ten seconds. Nine. Eight….”
I logged out quickly, but not before triggering a sly smile ( }:-> ). I knew that this assignment would challenge me like no other, and I would have to rely on all my skills and training. How to select just a handful of items from the many released over the past year? It seemed…impossible.
Hopefully my superiors will agree that I have succeeded. All of these creations epitomize the best of what SL design has to offer. In chronological order by month of release: (more…)

The wearing of green has been associated with the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day since the 19th century, and the tradition is followed today not just on the Emerald Isle but around the world. Vincente Shepherd’s Victorian steampunk stamp is clear on his new “Shamrock Collection,” just released at Gaslights Emporium. In its entirety, the collection is a complete ensemble, including clothing and accessories, so if you have no fear of a suit that is very green indeed, you may be able to outfit yourself from head to toe in one quick stop in Port Babbage.
The St. Patrick’s Day Green Shamrock Suit includes wool jacket with flexi tails, wool trousers, simple white formal shirt, shamrock-pattern waistcoat, and prim bow tie. The suit’s green is the bright, fresh color of raucous meadows in spring–no quiet forest glen or moss-covered stones here. Although stylistically similar to some of Vincente’s other, more restrained attire for Victorian gentlemen, this suit is set apart by its vibrant color and the elaborate, almost baroque pattern of the cloth used for the waistcoat, both front and back. Serendipity makes me happy.
There I was, minding my own business the other night, and I can’t remember if I was bored or not but I was certainly open to adventure, or at least a diversion. So when I more or less idly asked Posy what she was doing, and she responded “Trying on some new glasses I bought, and there’s a beautiful pocket watch too!” I immediately said, “TP me? Please?” In short order I arrived at the small but handsomely appointed shop of Pavig Lok. Although Posy hadn’t gone into specifics, she knew that Pavig’s gorgeously detailed steampunk creations would be right up my forbidding Victorian alley. She’s a temptress that way. And she was right–Pavig’s vendors showcased some very intriguing glasses and a truly elegant pocket watch. I thought to myself, “I’ll have the lot!”
Little did I know that I would receive so much more than I expected, based on the unassuming advertising placards I saw in the shop. (more…)

It’s been months since I showed you around hyasynth Tiramisu’s Silent Sparrow collection for men. Since then, she’s released several wonderful outfits for men and remodelled her sim and shop. I’m told by reliable sources that it’s totally amazing if you use the Windlight viewer. There’s a big reopening party planned for this weekend.
The most fabulous of the new releases is a new steampunk era suit called Sprocket. It comes in 6 flavours; I chose ‘dusk,’ the purple one (but couldn’t resist some extra colours, as you’ll see). The folder contained a jacket garment with prim jacket tails for men and for women, two pairs of trousers, two shirts (on the undershirt layer) with dusk-coloured ties/cravats painted on, and a dusk-coloured waistcoat/vest (on the shirt layer). Whenever I heard the word “romantic” I am immediately reminded of a scene in the movie “Moonstruck.” You know the scene—where Raymond Capomaggi, still madly in love with his wife Rita after many years together and apparently all but undone by the lovers’ moon that seems to be influencing everyone in sight, sings aloud a snippet of Rogers and Hart’s “Isn’t It Romantic?” Apparently, he was a tiger last night.
One thing we can take away from this delightful moment is that romance is not the exclusive province of the young and beautiful—anyone can be romantic. Maybe this is a bit of a stretch, but I think this also suggests that dressing romantically doesn’t just mean lipstick-kissed boxer briefs (not that there’s anything wrong with that)—it can be anything that represents an effort to connect to your significant other and make something special happen for both of you. Superior, varied period clothing has historically been found in Caledon, and the quality has continually been impressive. Classic menswear, however, was never in great supply. In recent months, however, Mako Magellan has been designing and offering classic men’s clothing with increasing frequency, the quality of which is as fine as anything to be found in the high end boutiques or men’s malls.
Sunday, Magellan added no less than eight new shoe offerings (available at Mako Magellan and House of Magellan, L$300 per pair) to his already prodigious stock of fine menswear, Victoriana and Nipponaphiliac accoutrements. Based off the same general architecture, taken together they offer the devotee a variety of intriguing options - exotic leathers and colors that lend any suit a tasteful insouciance that’s more rake than ‘rariman.

“Master D’Orsay, the time for delivering has long since past.” D’Orsay’s valet AO’d something of his own creation, wherein he tapped the side of his leg impatiently with his left hand while raising one Spocklike eyebrow. It was a deft piece of script, designed to indicate exasperation, cheek and no small measure of the insolence that invariably comes with familiarity. “We are expected.”
“I am aware, Tiro,” D’Orsay acknowledged with his usual equanimity. The fact was, the drafts the Lady Astarte has commissioned of him were perhaps half complete, and his valet Tiro called him now to an appointment for which he was more than a little underprepared. Tiro’s impatience was just; and their conversation was holed with the vacuum-bell pauses indicative of one who is doing some work offline and ALT-Tab’ing back and forth between World and Word. D’Orsay was, rather guiltily, engaging his deadline pace.

For my final post of 2007, I thought I’d make just a few suggestions for possible New Year’s Eve party attire. It seemed to me that formalwear was called for, so here are just a few of my favorites, some recent, that haven’t been featured here before.
If you’re looking for a beautifully designed traditional tuxedo, consider the variety of styles by designer edo Tone. The simple, classic style at right (L$400) has clean lines, a notched silk collar, and silk-edged pockets. The pants are elegantly textured, with a cleanly defined crease. The shawl collar tux at left (L$500) is done with the same attention to detail. Also available are a “High Grade” tux (L$600), with jacket textured in deep charcoal rather than inky black, and for variety a grey tux (also L$600). Note that the prices given here are for the tuxedo jacket and pants only; all tuxedo styles are also available in “coordinated sets” with wing collar shirts, vests, cummerbunds, and ties in various colors and styles. These accessory items are also available individually, so you can mix and match or expand your wardrobe with specific items to your personal taste. (more…)

So what if, as the song says, the weather outside is frightful? I’m such a whore for sweaters and coats as it is, I barely need winter as an excuse. This month you get to benefit from my hedonistic accumulation of cold-weather wardrobe items, as I’m sharing some of my favorites, both old and new.
First up, an old favorite of mine. These Pea Coats by Donmai Frederick, released last winter, have classic lines and a beautiful wool fabric texture. The set includes coats in six colors: Beige, Black, Blue (as shown here), Brown, Gray and Green. A simple undershirt also adds shape and bulk to the coat, so you look like you’re layering properly for the cold weather, just like your mother told you. As if that weren’t enough, you also get four flexi scarves, plain and striped, in short and longer lengths. Undershirt and scarves are tintable, so you can customize to your heart’s content. Also available in a set styled for women. Pick these up for L$300 for the set at Back and Forth (Metabirds 192, 71, 25). (more…)

When I was growing up, my mother always told me that there’s a difference between being a man and being a gentleman. As with so many things my mother told me, I’ve learned over time that this is true. I think it’s safe to say that this rule applies equally in Second Life. What makes one a gentleman? The term is usually associated today with a certain propriety and courtesy in one’s conduct, but historically also had connotations of belonging to a good family and perhaps even having the right connections. While I can’t help you with your manners or breeding, I can suggest some clothing and accessories without which no gentleman should venture into polite society. Feel free to take these necessarily specific recommendations and implement them more generally in your own gentlemanly pursuits.

Look. Now look hard. This is Banneret, the latest release from artist hyasynth Tiramisu of Silent Sparrow. There are more clothes for women than for men at the shop, but the outfits for men, like Banneret, are exceptional. There are four versions (400L$ each, fat pack 1200L$). Each is the same shape, each has prim cuffs and the innovative straight prim collar with buttons. And each comes with gloves, trousers and a jacket that can be worn on its own or with a flexi-prim tunic extension. This version is called Twilight. Think it’s just black? Look again. Look at that purple piping trim. Each has different coloured details. Now look harder. Each has a different intricate brocade pattern, soft black on hard black. There are secrets about black. But the real story of Silent Sparrow is the story of colours you cannot see. (more…)

It’s not really fair. Most builders and designers in Second Life are stuck with pixels and software. But there are a few who, either by Linden library function or by divine fiat, have clearly imported bolts of real fabric onto the grid. The superbly-named Cardinal Sin is one of these. And he’s lavished yards of the stuff on his robes. Click the photos to look at the larger version. This is crushed velvet to die to your sins for. I swear when you put it on, your keyboard and mouse will feel softer.
But church clothes? Is it ironic or is for real? The links with Goth are unmistakable: rich, luxuriant and darker than midnight on Good Friday, trimmed in gold and crimson. All that’s lacking are the cliches: no buckled-up shiny black latex/leatherette or ketchup-fake blood. All of which makes you think it just might be an on-the-level church-produced garment. The gold cross is prominent without being gaudy, the rosary beads are delicate and accurate. The whole piece is hand-drawn but without a trace of cartoon or even sarcasm. (more…)

The New Babbage Victorian steampunk region came to my attention by way of the New Babbage build on this year’s Relay For Life track. It was while exploring in Babbage Square that I discovered Gaslights Emporium, a men’s clothing and accessories shop featuring designs by Vincente Shepherd. The shop itself is fairly new, and some items are new within the last week or two. Here you can find everything you need to outfit yourself as a proper Victorian gentleman, from clothing to accessories–and a few toys as well.
The Gentleman’s Suit (L$400) is available in your choice of Blue, Green, Black, Claret (shown), Brown and Charcoal. It includes jacket, trousers, shirt, waistcoat, flexi coat bottom and prim bowtie. Vincente is currently making these available on a “buy one, get one free” basis–details are available in the shop. (more…)

Most of the time, the designs I review here are things I’ve found myself inworld, or read about in an announcement somewhere, or had brought to my attention by the designer him- or herself. This is one of the relatively few times a blog reader has come to me and said, “Hey, have you heard about this? Do you think you might be reviewing it?” I’m happy to get inquiries or suggestions from readers, although I can’t promise that every one will result in a review. This time, though, it did.
Rockwell Maltz’s new EOS (”Evolution of Sex”) Suit isn’t just a good-looking, classically styled suit–it has been designed with with a constant eye toward flexibility of wear. With its generous variety of wear options, this suit will take you from the boardroom to the bedroom without breaking a sweat, or even breathing hard. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist. It’s a sickness.)

Ryan is a hard act to follow. Forgive me, my friends, if I am not so eloquent nor so erudite as my companion…
*coughs*
Sorry. It’s the outfit. All dressed up in true Victorian style, I cannot but succumb–
Right. Enough. The Night at the Opera outfit consists of cloak (but of course), cane, top hat, and ascot. Nice touch on the ascot– it turns any tuxedo into a period piece. The cloak is black, lined in red, with a red-lined shoulder cape. The top hat matches nicely, with a red band to tie the outfit together. The texturing on both reads as color without being flat, which is more difficult to do than it sounds. (more…)

One of my favorite things that happens in SL (not often, but once in a while) is when a designer I’ve never heard of IMs me out of the blue and says, “Hey, I don’t know if you’re familiar with my work, but here’s what I do, won’t you take a look?” To me, this is an opportunity for discovery that feels a lot more personal and serendipitous than browsing through the New Releases forum for promising announcements…although I do that, too! So when an IM popped up from Raindrop Drinkwater a while back, I was happy to take a break from sorting my inventory (ugh) and chat for a bit. We had a delightful conversation touching on her design work, her shop A2Nz (Alsace to New Zealand), which she runs with Abyssia Otoro, and I don’t know how many other topics, and I’m pleased to share a few of her newer designs with you. The ensemble you see here, called “Elsasser: Hansi”, is an Alsacian formal suit, traditionally worn for significant events such as weddings and balls. It includes a white dress shirt, black trousers, jacket-layer red vest (both alone and with the jacket, as shown here), prim tie with collar (one to wear with the jacket, one to wear with the shirt alone), and a sculpted hat. Raindrop mentioned that she had paid special attention to the shading of the jacket and of the trousers, and the effort really does show. (more…)
