LTHOUGH MANY OF HIS OTHER products are not aimed at all of us, men of any orientation should know about and probably own some of Prynce Llewellyn‘s finely composed and hard-working suits. These are strongly-styled but structurally simple suits, with no fussy prim attachments but plenty of layers and options.
Tweed Suit is probably my favourite. Wear it with a retro, pale matching sweater, or a traditional white button-down shirt. Wear the shirt with the collar buttoned or unbuttoned or with a necktie of matching colour. Everything just matches, everything just works. (more…)

here are new sculpted-prim shoes at Guu Nishi‘s House of Curios Industries (HOC) and they are both stunning and inexpensive. We’ve featured HOC running shoes before: Rhys Ackmann, a guest consultant, loved his Bolts; Ryan wore some chucks as part of a rock-a-billy outfit and once called HOC‘s Skoochers “The best $10 shoes I’ve ever seen.” The new extended shoe selection at HOC offers phenomenal value for money and their flexibility makes them the new “Go To” shoes.
The newest pair in the HOC range are the Easy Striders, these comfortable slip-ons come with textures serious enough for business and others that are casual enough to wear with shorts.
Many HOC shoes have tags with the company initials; on the Easy Striders, this is a little metal piece on the piping around the top of the shoe. Click the shoes to be presented with a blue dialog box to change texture. There are 10 texture possibilities in all, although the last 5 are only unlocked to HOC group members (you’ll need to have membership activated when you put on the shoe to enable the extra textures). All this for L$75! Copy and Modify are allowed; no Transfer. Also in the folder is a version of the shoes for Viewer 2. From what I’ve heard on the forums, I hope to never see that particular version in person. (more…)

Nix Sands’s Impressionista line of waistcoats puts a museum’s worth of artistry into your wardrobe. There are currently 9 in the series, with more allegedly on the way, and each one is beautifully made. Some, like Monet’s Lilies and Van Gogh’s Starry, bring to mind whole paintings, cut into waistcoat shape. Others, like Klimt’s Kiss or Swirl seem more like motifs based on the painting rather than wearing the painting itself. Still others, like Lautrec’s plums or reds, look like more traditional waistcoats.
Nix generously includes some period-piece flap-fronted trousers and a dress shirt with each waistcoat, so you’re ready to go before you know it! Elsewhere in the Xcentricity shop, you’ll find bow- or string-ties to go with the shirt, if you so require. (more…)

see through our eyes, nor are they the window to our souls. Our Second Life vision cannot be brought into focus by interposing precision-ground prims between eyes and environment. Nor can Second Life’s blinding glare be tamed with tint or texture. We see, and are seen, as images adorned with objects that only change our view as much as they change our mood — expressions of my taste or of my familiarity or of my wishful thinking. I wear glasses not so I can recognize you, but so that we can recognize me.
When I surveyed some Second Life residents to find out why their avatars wore glasses, almost all of them said it was because they wore glasses in RL. When I asked, however, whether they were therefore looking for SL glasses that matched their RL ones, there was a lot more variety. Rozoregalia Braveheart created a series of 7 pairs of glasses called “Formica” that are not like your RL glasses. They’re sold in a shop of jewelry. And perhaps that’s how it should be. Most sets come in polished carbonfibre black and burnished chrome; these are finely crafted prims. They look great from a distance and even better when you zoom in. (more…)

OLOURED PIXELS MAPPED in deliberate patterns rush down optical cable to my computer, then somehow leap across the short distance from the screen through curved lenses and into my eyes. Rods and cones fire synapses along optic nerves to parts of this wetware brain that I don’t understand. I smile.
And somehow, art has happened.
It was my friend Chris who sent me the landmark to Charles2 McCaw’s “NY Couture.” And when I looked through the shop, there were a few things that caught my eye, things I’d not seen in other shops, things of colour – complex things that were simple things: things of artistry. (more…)

Shiryu Musashi has been designing for the SL fashion scene for coming up on five years now—his store, Musashi-Do, officially opened on November 27, 2004. I don’t know about you, but this is significantly earlier than my own rez date. He has a well-earned reputation for painstaking perfectionism, and his hand-painted fabric textures are beyond reproach. Shiryu has recently released some new suits for men—something that’s always nice to see!—and these are accompanied by his own innovation in dress neckwear: the InfiniTIE. (more…)

It’s official–swaffette has gone a little bit mad.
In the best way possible, I mean. Her new Performance Suit, released earlier this month, may just be the most impressively flexible suit I’ve ever worn. Dozens of pieces provide for what seems like tons of mix-and-match wear options. I tried to count up the possibilities, but I gave up when I lost track and had to start over. Twice. I kid you not.
swaffette’s creation is a classic English three-piece suit, in an attractive slim cut, with two-button jacket. This simple description doesn’t begin to convey the extensive planning and effort that have clearly gone into such a generous “single garment” offering. If that doesn’t signify some kind of madness, I don’t know what does. But you be the judge. (more…)

There was a time when you could count the Great Cobblers of SL on one or maybe two hands, especially if you were talking about shoes for men. Eponymous Trenchmouth. Fallingwater Cellardoor. Funk Schnook. swaffette Firefly. To name just a few of my own longtime favorites. These days, there are a lot more designers out there doing interesting and creative work in every imaginable area, including shoes for men. To this I say: “Say thankya.”
Sculpted prims in particular are making possible sophisticated shoe designs with smoothly shaped forms that only a small handful of designers have accomplished–and this no doubt tediously–with standard prim construction. (When I consider “just” the challenge of creating the illusion of seamless texture across a complex prim object, it makes my head hurt.) Maris Kanto’s “Gallop” dress shoes are impressively sculpted lace-ups, long, sleek and elegant, perfect for pairing with formal attire, dress or business suits, or lending class to a pair of jeans. Where do you go to get your wow outfits? The answer to that tells me a lot about you. But now… where do you go to get your staple clothes? That tells me even more. In your closet, it isn’t the dramatic outfits on their luxury form-fitting hangers that reveal your character as much as the rest of the stuff, hanging on wire hangers and folded up in your drawers.
And so it is that while I love the sudden thrill of finding a shop with something new and wild, I’m just as impressed when I can walk around the shop and gradually come to the conviction that, yeah, they sell just about everything and I could pretty much wear any of it quite happily.
Such a shop is Kerem Lunt’s King for Men.
Take for instance my first combination. The brown Canvas Trousers (L$145 in brown, light brown or black) have a nice earthy glow to them. They attract the eye, but are willing to yield attention back to the top, the red Argyle Sweater (L$135 in light brown, white, red, grey, green or brown; the white comes with a black shirt peeking through underneath, all the others have a white one). See what I mean, though? Wear an outfit like this and no one is going to gasp. But those with an eye, those with discernment, the ones you want to notice… they’ll notice. (more…)

It was Ryan who last mentioned Yukimaru Koba’s Z#road shop, back in January. He was reviewing some skins. I found myself in the shop for the first time this week and it was the blazers that impressed me. I think the best of the lot is the dark blue blazer with matching trousers. It’s one of the sharpest suits I own now. The fabric is so soft and comfortable. Some suits in SL are all perfect creases and smooth, straight lines, and some SL suits have wrinkles that have become permanent creases. The Z#road blazers and trousers are marvelously in the middle. There are some sharp creases in the right places, and no creases in the wrong places, but other than that, this almost liquid feel — it ripples rather than wrinkles. And I love it.
The red jacket is pale, almost salmon, and clearly on the ‘strong’ side of the border with pastel. The trousers that come with it are called white, but in fact they are more eggshell off-white. The debonair cheerfulness of this bright outfit (more…)

I’m blaming Marcus for this one. In fact, I so hold him responsible that I roped him into modeling for me…not, mind you, that I had to bully him, or even beg very hard. It’s just that Marcus clearly knows my weaknesses, and when he dropped me a landmark and sent me an oh-so-innocent IM, I didn’t realize it but the hunt was on. The bait in the trap he set for me was the Roma Leather Coats by Naiman Broome. That Marcus is a devious one.
In fairness, it’s not exactly a deep, dark secret that I’ve got a thing for coats. (Offered in evidence: links to just a few of my favorites.) In addition to the gorgeously textured leather of the coat itself, Naiman has thoughtfully included components for several different wear options as well as some great accessory items. The result is a coat with at least some of the flexibility of a real garment, with fewer limitations than you might expect. (more…)

Wavie Haller of Valiant has been getting a bit of press recently, and for good reason. He’s a bit of the new kid on the block in men’s fashion. Thing is, the new kids get older and wiser and he’s been no exception.
As part of the aging process, Wavie’s decided to retire a few of his earlier designs and offer them as freebies. That’s how I got my hands on the Relax Blue Shirt I’m wearing. There’s currently also a pink v-neck t and a light gray cardigan in the freebie bag, available on the front counter at his main store. These shirts all have tiny flaws, ranging from slightly mismatched seams to blurry edges, but most aren’t noticeable unless you stare. The only big complaint I had was over the length — most shirts were short even on the jacket layer. I had to dig a bit before I found the Brown D&G Pants to go with them. They’re from Jonquille Noir on the 3rd floor at GNUBie, in a pack of assorted Men’s clothing. (more…)

I was in a barren and empty sim, the hour was late and it was dark (I had forced midnight) when a mysterious message urgently demanded my attention. “Your mission, should you choose to accept it: for the next issue of Second Style, highlight some of the best individual designs in SL fashion of the last twelve months. This IM will self-destruct in ten seconds. Nine. Eight….”
I logged out quickly, but not before triggering a sly smile ( }:-> ). I knew that this assignment would challenge me like no other, and I would have to rely on all my skills and training. How to select just a handful of items from the many released over the past year? It seemed…impossible.
Hopefully my superiors will agree that I have succeeded. All of these creations epitomize the best of what SL design has to offer. In chronological order by month of release: (more…)

Now, I don’t mean “guywear” in the sense that it’s clothing Lloyd Dobler would wear. (“The world is full of guys. Don’t be a guy. Be a man.”) It’s just that “menswear” seemed somehow not quite right here. Yes, I’m making it up as I go along. Anyway, Lloyd might well wear some of this stuff. I’m thinking by the end of the movie.
I seem to recall that Garbage Prototype had dropped one or two vague hints during the two months or so it took him to redesign and rebuild his shop and completely revamp his clothing and body lines for men and women. I think he just likes to tease like that. This is the kind of thing that just nags away at me from the back of my brain, kind of like my mother, or my conscience if I had one, or the approach of Christmas when I was a kid. I had also visited his website and seen his teaser video, so I knew that interesting things were afoot at the Circle-K. When he finally said, “Okay, I’m not ready to open yet, but come and take a look if you want to!”–I most definitely wanted to.
I honestly don’t know what my expectations were. I didn’t expect the shop’s casually elegant atmosphere to so slyly reflect Garbage’s creative approach. I know that I was surprised by some of the designs–wow, Garbage did a suit?–and impressed by the range of items and choice of colors. As a collection it felt focused, consistent, and very much an expression of a designer’s vision. I couldn’t wait to pick his brain. (more…)

Sorry, you have to make allowances for the occasional “Wizard of Oz” reference. Just roll with it.
I’ve feel like I’ve been all over the map lately, stylistically speaking–and don’t get it wrong, I’ve got some fun stuff in the works for next week. But today I venture back into very familiar territory with some casual designs that you know are the kind of thing I live and breathe. Dan Senyurt’s new Club Shirts have everything a casual shirt needs: silky smooth fabric texture, neatly cuffed short sleeves, notched collar with handsome drop shadow, and front patch pocket. They come on the jacket and shirt layers and can be worn neatly tucked in, as you see here, or more casually untucked. An open and untucked version is also included, perfect for layering with your favorite tank or tee, or just catching the breeze on an especially warm spring day. (more…)

I rarely feel the need to look traditionally professional in SL. You may have noticed that I keep an inworld office, although not, um, actual office hours. It’s rather casually appointed–there’s no desk, although there is a little-used conference table– and I pretty much use it just for meetings and the occasional interview. There are times, though, when a man needs to look like he means business, literally, and in those circumstances it’s entirely possible that no amount of themed gear will do. While a jacket may be optional in today’s “business casual” environments (I can hear Secundus cringing from here), a quality dress shirt is essential. Pompo Bombacci’s new “Faze” dress shirts come in four office-appropriate colors: Cream, Light Blue, Green and Purple. The fabric texture strikes a nice balance between freshly ironed and comfortably well worn. If not done carefully, the former can feel too “crispy” for my taste, while the later can look like you slept in the shirt, in your car…in the office parking lot. (more…)

Based on the glasses worn by Bruce Willis in “Hudson Hawke,” this is Hawke by Nibb Tardis (as always, click the photo to see a larger version). Lots of companies make great glasses and sunglasses in Second Life. But you could not compile a shortlist of the finest without including primOptic. As soon as you try on a demo, you are struck by the quality. These glasses are not nice pictures clipped from the internet and slapped onto a stretched cube on your face. Mssr Tardis handcrafts these from lots of tiny prims, expertly and precisely shaped, tapered and positioned. They are the work of a craftsman, an architect.
Yet an amazing amount of control has been handed to us, the wearers. (more…)

Superior, varied period clothing has historically been found in Caledon, and the quality has continually been impressive. Classic menswear, however, was never in great supply. In recent months, however, Mako Magellan has been designing and offering classic men’s clothing with increasing frequency, the quality of which is as fine as anything to be found in the high end boutiques or men’s malls.
Sunday, Magellan added no less than eight new shoe offerings (available at Mako Magellan and House of Magellan, L$300 per pair) to his already prodigious stock of fine menswear, Victoriana and Nipponaphiliac accoutrements. Based off the same general architecture, taken together they offer the devotee a variety of intriguing options – exotic leathers and colors that lend any suit a tasteful insouciance that’s more rake than ‘rariman.

In my personal experience I noticed that Second Life fashion is often either extremely casual or extremely formal. But let’s say you have a reputable job in Second Life, for example in education or in business. Both of those sectors have ties to the real world, and often real life business relations don’t really appreciate if you show up in urban gear whether it’s a virtual world or not. A formal suit might be exaggerated though. In those cases the Academic is a perfect alternative.
The Academic by Cattiva e Cattivo is a middle-of-the-road blazer outfit. It looks professional enough to wear while teaching your students, but if you’re so inclined it also looks everyday enough that you can wear it at your home. In fact, I think certain combinations would even work in a dance club.
The outfit comes packed with choices. For 350 L$ you receive 8 shirts, 4 flexi ties, 4 blazers, 2 pairs of jeans with prim cuffs, 2 pairs of shoes, a pair of socks and a prim collar. This ensures that everyone can wear this outfit in the way they prefer. (more…)

Global Warming is, by all reckoning, here to stay. Polar bears running across cocktailing ice, Polynesians aboard outriggers besaddled with backpacks and lunchpails, grasshoppers growing large, learning Missourah-speak and taking jobs in the ethanol and methamphetamine industries–truly, it contains the seeds of planetary catastrophe. And yet… if one looks, the silver lining is there. Moscow eschews the thwarting snow for fields of lush grain. Canada’s warm denizens and chill winds welcome a monied immigrant class from the south and finally put the Northwest Territories to use as a grand vacationland. The Sahara becomes a sea of glass. So why not light gray for fall suiting? It’s been many a year since anyone paid mind to them that wear white after Labor Day, and stripes and stripes have lived together comfortably for years thanks to Etro and Cannon. When it’s 70 in November, a man’s tweed hangs on him like a Neanderthal’s furs–he needs something with a bit less mass. (more…)

Tony opened the door to the church slowly and peeked in. The smell of the empty cathedral rushed over him. The aromas of hundreds of people who had been tramping in and out, giving thanks or confessing sins, mingled and took him back to when he was a kid and his mother made him be an altar boy. It would make him a good man, she used to say. He was glad she wasn’t around to see him now. The cathedral was empty now. The good Padre and his minions were finished with it for the day. He slid between the doors and stood, huddling at the back. The memories flooded over him. He looked down at himself, seeing once again the long robes he wore as he strode through the isles during the services. He could still remember the words, he whispered to himself. His eyes focused on the present again and looked at what he was wearing now. Clothes he thought he could never afford, clothes his parents never would afford. He ran his hand over the smooth material of his jacket; it was as dark as blood. He rubbed his hand across a sleeve, marking how the pattern there matched the collar. His green shirt and tie contrasted and coordinated with the jacket beautifully. (more…)

By coincidence, I went to interview Chez Nabob only a few days before the release of his new items. Pins in his mouth, he was working on some final touches. He mentioned, as almost an after-thought, that he was putting together “…something I swore I’d never do: jeans.” I inquired further.
“Everyone in SL who makes clothes does jeans. I didn’t want to do what everyone else was doing. I figured there were more than enough options for people.
“But then,” he said, “I would be making something for my line and think to myself — hmmm — wish I had some jeans to go with that. So I caved in and made some.” Thus, some of the nicest jeans you’ll ever own were born out of a concession, a weakness. He couldn’t help himself: he caved in. (more…)

“Armidi Is Coming.”
You’ve probably seen this tag floating above the heads of dozens if not hundreds of SL residents, men and women both, over the last few months. All of them were eager, expectant, even excited. I should know–I was one of them. You couldn’t blame them (us), really, after the tiny taste we got at Hair Fair earlier this year. (I tried not to wear the ”Poynter” style absolutely everywhere, but I’m not sure I was entirely successful.) And ever since the Armidi sim actually appeared on the map, it has shown as nothing but a mysterious black square. What have they been doing in there? Rumors of a beautiful, stylish build and lust-inducing clothing designs have floated like dandelions on the wind. Now you can see for yourself. Now, at last, Armidi is here. (more…)

Blaze Columbia makes some of the finest dress and formal menswear in Second Life. Blaze’s Power Suit has been one of my favorites since its release in March. Surely no man’s wardrobe inventory is complete without at least two suits by Blaze…one in black, and at least one in another color. Newly released at Blaze Fine Fashions is the classic Wool Suit, now updated with all new fabric textures and sculpted prim pants legs in two different styles: without and without turned cuff. The suit comes in a wide spectrum of 20 different colors; you see me wearing it here in Maple and Sea Green. (more…)
