In spite of my recent holiday foray into latex, this isn’t really an area I’ve explored in any depth. As admirable as a lot of the design work is, it just doesn’t speak to me personally, and as a result I haven’t featured it here. There’s no denying that there’s some quality work being done in the genre, though, and Nothing Quan kind of nudged (teased?) me to cover more…or rather, less. I nudged right back and suggested that he bring his more extensive experience and expertise to bear on the topic. The result is the sampling of specialty gear from Elixir you see before you today. Open your mind, limber up your expectations, and feast your eyes! I’ll let Nothing take it from here. – Ryan (more…)

Plague never rests for long.
The plague doctor moves through dark cities, his heavy cloak rustling with each step, his leather shoes a whisper on the damp streets. The world groans with sickness, and where there are labored breaths, aching shivers under blankets, and disease-dizzied minds, the doctor will go. (more…)

Getting dressed is as easy as throwing on a pair of jeans and a shirt. But style is in the details, and that often means accessories – an area of fashion often difficult for men. Should the belt match the shoes? Should the shoes match the coat? Should the coat match the watch? Can’t I just say to hell with it and put on my bathrobe and stay home?
In any outfit, finding the right balance of accessories is key. Too few is bland; many and you end up looking like Mr. T (and that is only a good look on Mr. T). Further, your accessories should complement each other. While they don’t have to match exactly, they should appear to have the same purpose. Dress shoes look good with a suit, or parts of one; less so with Bermuda shorts. (more…)

All this talk lately about N1H1 Flu has got me thinking – why do we always have to look our best in SL? What about those days when you’re just not feelin’ it and want your AV to reflect that? My friend Miko has an answer, a folder with her Sick/Mental Health Day Outfit complete with bathrobe, hair towel, fuzzy slipper, eye covering cucumber slices and a mud mask, all perfect for just such a day. She tops it off with a tag reading “Haven’t had my Coffee” and a steaming mug. It’s hilarious! (more…)

Akin to humans, furs come in all shapes and sizes, with the added complexity of species to consider. Perhaps a little more challenging, albeit very rewarding, is customizing your furry self. Unlike humans, furry avatars do not have an easy to use slider system for changing the shape and size of various attributes. And while clothes may make the man, they most definitely make the fur–as do accessories; for it is the easiest way to express individuality when bound by a (usually) difficult-to-modify avatar. Before I jump into apparel however, I do wish to say a few words about some of the customizations possible with a furry avatar. Results vary, as does everyone’s desire to modify his or her base furry avatar. (more…)

I was told the hardest thing to do when you’re a guest style consultant was to write a few words on the outfit. They probably had never met someone like me before, with a cazillion outfits and different looks in my inventory, by far the hardest was finding just one that shouted out here is jamie Cheeky, mainly because I morph alot on style.
The skin part is easy. After 2.5 years of running about SL in a old Naughty skin I decided to go for a new look. Zanzo Seraphim – Raphael (freckly) was perfect. I’m not a 6 pack lover or a gorilla chest freak and Zanzo fitted the bill. I got the freckles just because I thought they were cute and added a youthful spirit to the look. $L 1200 at Zanzo. (more…)

Hi all, somehow Ryan got it into his head that just because I can write a few blurbs at the end of his posts – I’d be able to handle my own guest spot… Well, let’s see how right (or wrong) he can be!
First let me introduce myself. I’m Rhys Ackmann, a SL photographer with a fair hand for fashion. How did I become so good at knowing what’s worthwhile in SL? I find that reading freebie and fashion blogs, sorting a year’s worth of hunt finds and spending every linden you made on clothing, shapes, skins and hair will do that to a guy. Not that I’m vain, just can’t seem to find the AV I want to be.
So what to review? Well, it’s kind of embarrassing but I get invited to a ton of teahouses. You have to admit it’s a huge subculture in SL, so knowing how to dress and act just might come up. No worries, I’m here to help! (more…)

Being classy on Second Life in a predominantly hip-hop environment is not easy. I’ve been on the game for well over one year and from the first day to the day I wrote this I can honestly say certain scenes on SL have and will never change. Every group, every clique, every organization has a particular style they represent. In the hip-hop community it’s usually as follows:
1 pair of Nike Uptown styled sneakers (tennis shoes for those of you in the south)
1 pair of baggy jeans
1 sports jersey
1 excessively over-primmed platinum chain and matching earrings
And last but not least, 1 oversized baseball cap representing the local team (more…)

It’s been a little while since we’ve had a Guest Style Consultant feature, so I’d say it’s about time. Roland Zepp shares his personal style, advice and suggestions in his own blog, Roland Zepp’s Fashion Sense. He was kind enough to agree to appear here, and it was a great opportunity for us to meet “in person” at last! — Ryan
I’ve gone through a lot of looks in my time here. Starting with the newbie/freebie and working up to writing about fashion and participating in the fashion world as a model and photographer, I’ve discovered a lot of styles, designs, and designers.
It’s hard to nail down exactly what my look is. At heart, I’m a minimalist kinda guy. Less is more in my book. It may not seem like it when you see all my various contests and looks and all, but when I’m just hanging out on the grid, I like to keep it pretty basic. I don’t wear a lot of extra crap in RL and I don’t see any reason to do it here.

To begin with, in second life, I’m a DJ and manager at The Wharf. I host events for other Djs, as well. If you’ve never been to the Wharf, you are missing out on a fantastic place. Chester Howley and Finnegan Chesnokov are the dynamic duo that own the place, and have made it into the awesome place it is today. I love to talk to and meet people. And I love to share my music – hence the DJ thing.
You could say that I spend a great deal of time in and around music on SL. I enjoy exploring various places, whether its a music club, seeing interesting builds, or going shopping and doing things with my friends. I have met some fantastic people, and have grown very close to a few. (more…)

Once upon a time, there was a boy. But this was no ordinary boy–he was a boy who, perhaps through mutation or other accident of biology, was also a cat. This was unusual enough, but then one day he was bitten by a great wild dog. That’s when things really started to get interesting. (more…)

After two years in Second Life (SL) I am only now realizing how much SL mimics Real Life (RL) — be it personalities, behaviours, creations, fashions and more (1). I dare say, without trying, my RL self has bled almost fully into my SL self. When I first entered SL I knew I wished to explore the Victorian gentleman aspect of myself. Being a clothes whore in RL, it was natural for me to insist on finding just the perfect outfits that I had envisioned towards my creation. Two years ago, the selection of Victorian clothing available was miniscule and in many cases, not exactly what I was looking for. I suffered my fashion crisis in silence, but remained vigilant in keeping a spectacled eye towards growing and new designers. (more…)

Ryan: The first thing I noticed about Dimitri is that all of his prim accessories–clothing components, hair, jewelry, glasses–were perfectly fitted. It’s not that I’m constantly going around and checking out how guys have fitted their prims…well, actually I guess I do in fact do that. Hey, it’s part of the job! But almost any guy will let one thing or another slide just a bit, or decide not to lose any sleep over that one last strand of hair. Not Dimitri. I’m pretty uptight about fitting hair myself, so I feel his angst.
Dimitri: Well, I must admit, I was a little nervous when I sent in the application for the guest style consultant. I have been interested in doing something like this for quite some time and when I saw [Ryan's] post on the web site, I jumped at the opportunity. I have been in SL about five months now, but ever since the first month I have really been into men’s fashion. I create my outfits with the intention of being noticed and standing out in a crowd. I am more of a casual guy when it comes to clothes, but I don’t limit myself to that type of style. I also love to dabble in other types. (more…)

Kith: I was really excited when Ryan first asked me to participate in his guest stylist column. But then came the ‘oh my god what do I wear’ part, so for days I was sifting through my wardrobe trying to find something suitable. Finally I settled on something casual and ‘me’ for the most part by simply pulling together some of my favorite pieces from my inventory. (more…)

It occurred to me a little while back that there might be guys out there who wouldn’t necessarily want to sign up for contributing regularly to this blog, but who might just be interested in kicking in some kind of one-off. The question was, what form would that take? Long story short, the concept I settled on is something I’m calling Guest Style Consultant. I think that not only sounds but looks impressive, especially with the capital letters, and if you say it right you can almost hear them.
Here’s how it works: you have a great look, so you bring yourself to my attention or maybe I spot you somewhere and invade your personal space with an invitation. Relying on your strong sense of personal style, you put together an outfit, write up a list of the items so others can track them down, and maybe write a few lines on why and how the outfit reflects your own style. Then we work out a convenient time for a short photo shoot, I take a bunch of pictures and collect the details. At this point your work is done, so you get to be lazy while I do the grunt work of assembling and publishing the post. Then you get to brag and show off to your friends. I do a lot of the work, you get all the glory! How sweet is that? (more…)
