Put a little glum in your heart

dead_mouse_bloody_manson.jpgForget your fellow man
Offer no helping hand
Put a little glum in your heart
You see it’s getting late
Oh, please don’t hesitate

Another day goes by
Hey, hear the children cry
Put a little glum in your heart
If you want the world to know
We won’t let gladness grow

I do love me a bargain

holy_relic_uniform_full1.jpgBut hey, doesn’t everybody?  So I figure I’m not alone in that, not hardly.  Surely you yourself are fond of getting a good deal.  Here’s the thing:  there are any number of other great blogs that focus on the great freebies, dollarbies and other bargains you can find in SL.  As much as I like me a good bargain, bargains aren’t my main emphasis here.  That said, if as you’re reading this you’re thinking, “Well, I love bargains, I’m killer at finding them, and I wouldn’t mind writing about the ones I find”…hey, give me a shout.  We can do a deal, Mr. Bond!  Today, though, I’ve got some great (I think they’re great) all-but-freebie items to show off.  I’m hoping at least one or two of them will entice you do a little low-budget, high-value shopping.

The items making up my various outfits are all (with some few exceptions) from Slanted Fox.  I’m sure I had visited Slanted Fox at some point in the past, but if I took anything home with me I’ve lost track of it somehow since then.  I forget exactly what I was searching for the other day, when I ended up visiting again, but I think the phrase “3L$ Store” jumped out at me from the search listings.  Apparently I must have clicked the link because there was a telltale whoosh, and next thing I knew I was in Harajukubox Town.  You know, sometimes stuff just happens, and all you can do is roll with it. Rogues of New Babbage: Part the Second

vincent_full.jpgThe Dandy

His grandfather, Eustacio Babbage, had founded the great steamworks that had first allowed the great city of New Babbage to rise like a phoenix from the squalor of the grubby hamlet most now dismissed with no small contempt as Old Babbage, but which had then been simply Babbage.  He himself now ran that steamworks, greatly expanded since its initial construction, and was immensely proud of the fact that it provided the power that drove most of New Babbage.  Indeed, it was the steamworks that drove Industry itself and made life possible at their current impressive level of technological advancement, with all the accompanying creature comforts that the citizenry enjoyed so thoroughly. Naughty? Or nice?

He’s making a list, checking it twice
Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice
Santa Claus is coming to town!

naughty_santa_full.jpgYou’ve almost certainly heard the Christmas song “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.”  If you’re of a certain age, you probably remember well from the childhood the old Rankin-Bass holiday TV special of the same name.  What’s important here is Santa’s role as judge, jury and (metaphorical) executioner, at least as far as Christmas gifts are concerned.  Who wants a lump of coal in his stocking?

You do remember that key section of the lyrics, don’t you?  It actually sounds kind of scary, when you think about it.  I mean, what, Santa knows everything?  All the stuff I’ve done this year?  Even that one thing?  I only did that once, I swear.  Okay, two or three times.  But still, what happened to my right to privacy?  I still deserve presents, don’t I?  I’m a good boy, I am! The beauty of flexibility: Suits by Musashi-Do

evening_in_roma_close.jpgShiryu Musashi has been designing for the SL fashion scene for coming up on five years now—his store, Musashi-Do, officially opened on November 27, 2004.  I don’t know about you, but this is significantly earlier than my own rez date.  He has a well-earned reputation for painstaking perfectionism, and his hand-painted fabric textures are beyond reproach.  Shiryu has recently released some new suits for men—something that’s always nice to see!—and these are accompanied by his own innovation in dress neckwear:  the InfiniTIE. {AHC} by AlexanderHunter Rembrandt

ahc_valenciaga_shop_lounge.jpgIn SL, I try to get out of my RL box, from time to time at least.  Isn’t that a big part of what SL is for, really?  My recent Prince of the Underworld is miles removed from anything I’d wear in RL, probably even for Halloween, if only for practical reasons.  Stuff like that is a lot of fun, and it’s good to stretch.  I do have my comfort zone, though, and every once in a while I run into some new designs that seem quite literally tailor-made for me and my own tastes.  AlexanderHunter Rembrandt’s just-opened {AHC} (the initials stand for “AlexanderHunter’s Couture”) houses just such a collection.  AlexanderHunter says that his goal with {AHC} is “class and excellence with just a hint of sexiness for both men and women…haute couture and accessories inspired by real life’s top designers.  The collections are seasonal and therefore available only for a few months, making every design a limited edition.”  The names of the various specialty shops at {AHC} reflect these inspirations:  Dulce & Ghanel women’s wear; Valenciaga men’s wear; Prava men and women’s footwear; Vuittior men and women’s jewelry, handbags, and additional accessories; and San Lauren men and women’s skins and hairstyles.  They also convey a slyness and sense of fun suggesting that AlexanderHunter isn’t taking himself too seriously. [Guest Style Consultant] : Marten Webwyre

marten_063.jpgGetting dressed is as easy as throwing on a pair of jeans and a shirt.  But style is in the details, and that often means accessories – an area of fashion often difficult for men.  Should the belt match the shoes?  Should the shoes match the coat?  Should the coat match the watch?  Can’t I just say to hell with it and put on my bathrobe and stay home?

In any outfit, finding the right balance of accessories is key.  Too few is bland; many and you end up looking like Mr. T (and that is only a good look on Mr. T).  Further, your accessories should complement each other.  While they don’t have to match exactly, they should appear to have the same purpose.  Dress shoes look good with a suit, or parts of one; less so with Bermuda shorts. A return to classicism

performance_suit_full.jpgIt’s official–swaffette has gone a little bit mad.

In the best way possible, I mean.  Her new Performance Suit, released earlier this month, may just be the most impressively flexible suit I’ve ever worn.  Dozens of pieces provide for what seems like tons of mix-and-match wear options.  I tried to count up the possibilities, but I gave up when I lost track and had to start over.  Twice.  I kid you not.

swaffette’s creation is a classic English three-piece suit, in an attractive slim cut, with two-button jacket.  This simple description doesn’t begin to convey the extensive planning and effort that have clearly gone into such a generous “single garment” offering.  If that doesn’t signify some kind of madness, I don’t know what does.  But you be the judge. Make Him Over Hunt

make_him_over_hunt.jpg“Make Him Over Hunt ~ Second Life’s first MEN ONLY hunt”
June 1 – 30, 2009

The organizers of the Make Him Over Hunt understand your frustration with most hunts, oriented as they often are toward women and their interests.  Their goal is to get men involved in the fun of a hunt, giving them a chance to  pick up some free items while discovering and exploring stores they might not be familiar with.

As with most hunts, once a starting location has been set, participants will be provided with a starting landmark.  At each store, you can find and claim your gift item, along with the landmark for the next store location, until you reach the end.  The hunt is circular, which means that the landmark at the last location will direct you to the first location.  Even if you start the hunt somewhere in the middle, you’ll still be able to visit all the participating stores.  Gifts will be hidden somewhere in each store–just look for the orange “male” symbol.  Designers may be offering one of their current designs, an exclusive item available only during the hunt, or a store card.

Visit the official hunt blog for the latest updates and a complete list of participating designers!

You may also join the MAKE HIM OVER group inworld to receive updates.

Screw success–I’m dressing for paradise

So, I’ve been dreaming of a summer vacation.  And not just any summer vacation–the perfect one, the one you never want to come home from.  It’s unlikely that I’ll manage to pull off anything quite like my dream in RL, but I figure, why let that stop me in SL?  And so, as you see, the beach hut in Bora Bora.  But then there’s the eternal question: what to wear? The Not-So-Wild One

not_so_wild_one.jpgIt begins here for me on this road.  How the whole mess happened I don’t know, but I know it couldn’t happen again in a million years.  Maybe I could’ve stopped it early, but once the trouble was on its way, I was just goin’ with it.  Mostly I remember the girl.  I can’t explain it–a sad chick like that, but somethin’ changed in me.  She got to me, but that’s later anyway.  This is where it begins for me, right on this road.

Grid-wide Easter egg hunt, with stuff for guys

spring_easter_egg_hunt_2009.jpgI’m not usually able to spend much time on hunts, but they can be a lot of fun, and for a change this one sounds like it will actually be rewarding for guys!  And so I bring you the following Public Service Announcement.  — Ryan

I thought you’d like to know about an exciting month-long hunt called “Spring Is In the Air.”  It’s for lesser known designers to show off just what they can do; all are small businesses.   Each store owner hides an Easter Egg somewhere in their store  and with a starting point and clues, our hunters begin!   There will be assistants in many areas to help out with any issues.  The Hunt runs from April 1 – 30!  We’ve all made a huge attempt to design things with men in mind because so many don’t always think of them.  So far, over half of our designers have items that would be of interest to men! Diamonds (and other shiny things) are a boy’s best friend

under_the_sea.jpgNothing says “I love you” like jewelry.  And I’m not just talking about the ladies here–it’s a not-very-secret secret that guys like jewelry, too.  I think it’s because there’s so little good lingerie out there for us.  I mean, hey, a good pair of boxer briefs and we’re done.  (Although, hmm, there are always silks…)  I’m not talking about watches, either, at least not today.  I love watches, but for me they’re more an accessory item than jewelry.  Jewelry is something you wear just because it’s pretty.  There, I said it and I’ll say it again: pretty.  Deep down, you know it’s true.

In case you haven’t noticed, Valentine’s Day is coming right up, check your calendar!  For your gift-giving consideration, I thought I’d suggest some jewelry items that I love and admire.  I’m hoping that you (or your man) might like them too.

Blogger Style Throwdown: Jazz Busker under 3500L (vs. Ryan Darragh)

Before I talk about Jazz, y’all might be wondering what a busker is. Buskers are street performers.

Now, about Jazz. There’s no easy way to define what Jazz is but that’s what makes this a fun theme for the throwdown. From swing to bebop to jazz fusion *shudders*, there’s no easy way to define jazz. And there definitely is no easy way to peg someone as a jazz peformer. That’s why Ryan Darragh, our resident editor in chief, and I decided to each put down 3500L to start our own jazz ensemble.

Blogger Style Throwdown: Snow Day Tag Team under 5500L (vs. Nicolas Sinatra and Dahlia Eilde)

That’s right, the throwdown is back! As I told you last week, we’ve got twice as many people this time around for a tag team throwdown. I’m up against Nicolas Sinatra and Dahlia Eilde of the couples fashion blog, Bonnie & Clyde. Both are experienced models, currently employed by Nex-Core Model Management. On top of that, Bonnie & Clyde is one of the first couples fashion blogs for Second Life, so they have plenty of experience working together. I’ll be teaming up with my lovely wifey, TheDiva Rockin, Chief of the SL Fashion Police, and hoping we can keep pace with em.

Our theme is “Snow day.” Why’s that? Because a good portion of the Northern Hemisphere has experienced snow in the past few weeks. Basically, its too cold for me go outside. Luckily, SL lets us play in the snow without the cold, the wet, the mushy, and the soggy.

It’s a win-win for everyone.

A study in holiday contrast

not_quite_rudolph.jpgI won’t argue with you.  The juxtaposition may indeed seem odd.  Skinkie Winkler’s new “Esprit de Neige” (Spirit of Snow) men’s necklace is is a stunning piece of simple, icy elegance, eminently suitable for dressy, even formal holiday occasions.  And I’m wearing it with…antlers?

Yes.  Let me tell you why.  There is, as the saying goes, a method to my madness.

I think we sometimes worry too much about “properly coordinating” our clothing, jewelry, hairstyle, accessories, toys and whatnot when we put ourselves together.  Now, I’m not trying to discourage you from striving for sartorial harmony rather than chaos.  But there’s also nothing wrong with whimsy, or with occasionally wearing, let’s say, a more “formal” piece of jewelry with a more “casual” outfit, just to let it really stand out and shine.  Once you understand certain guiding principles, then you can begin bending them, even if you prefer not to break them outright.  Hey, this is SL, not RL–it’s supposed to be fun!
