This year, rather than doing one big “round-up” of Halloween ideas, I thought I’d put together a series of costumes and post them individually in the several days leading up to Halloween. I thought this would not only be more fun, but might also give you a little extra time to do your shopping. I have no idea how many posts there will ultimately be in this series, but I’m hoping for something in the neighborhood of “several,” so check back for more! (more…)

Now, I don’t mean “guywear” in the sense that it’s clothing Lloyd Dobler would wear. (”The world is full of guys. Don’t be a guy. Be a man.”) It’s just that “menswear” seemed somehow not quite right here. Yes, I’m making it up as I go along. Anyway, Lloyd might well wear some of this stuff. I’m thinking by the end of the movie.
I seem to recall that Garbage Prototype had dropped one or two vague hints during the two months or so it took him to redesign and rebuild his shop and completely revamp his clothing and body lines for men and women. I think he just likes to tease like that. This is the kind of thing that just nags away at me from the back of my brain, kind of like my mother, or my conscience if I had one, or the approach of Christmas when I was a kid. I had also visited his website and seen his teaser video, so I knew that interesting things were afoot at the Circle-K. When he finally said, “Okay, I’m not ready to open yet, but come and take a look if you want to!”–I most definitely wanted to.
I honestly don’t know what my expectations were. I didn’t expect the shop’s casually elegant atmosphere to so slyly reflect Garbage’s creative approach. I know that I was surprised by some of the designs–wow, Garbage did a suit?–and impressed by the range of items and choice of colors. As a collection it felt focused, consistent, and very much an expression of a designer’s vision. I couldn’t wait to pick his brain. (more…)

My home sim hates me. I don’t mean the estate region I live in; I mean the simulator hardware that runs it. I think it really hates me, and I’m pretty sure it’s because of the high-prim-count accessories I love so much. Sometimes I think I can feel it chug and grind as I click to put on a 200-prim hairstyle. It’s a terrible thing to be so vain. I don’t blame the designers–this failing is all mine, and I take full responsibility. After all, they only create their primtastic masterpieces; I decide on my own to wear them, nobody holds a scripted gun to my virtual head. That said, some of the “worst offenders” (in a good way) in my inventory are jewelry and accessories by Yukirei Greene. Even her apparently simple designs tend to be highly complex upon close inspection: chains are made of dozens if not hundreds of minuscule prim links; what might be highly detailed 2-D textures turn out to be “inlays” of tiny prims. You get the idea. (more…)

You may recall that I’ve featured some of Yukirei Greene’s beautifully elaborate jewelry and accessory items here before, but with Halloween right around the corner it seems like a good time to highlight a few of her newer pieces. Now, I’m not saying that these are only suitable for Halloween or costumed occasions–no no, not at all! But if you’re going at all goth this year, you might find that these, or some of Yukirei’s other items, fit right in.
The three pieces I’m presenting here today are the Hand Scull Belt, the Scale Nail Necklace, and the Scull Which Tears Mask Ring. (All are shown in more detail below.) The Hand Scull Belt (L$250) is made of glossy black leather and is studded with metal rings in a complex chain formation that runs the belt’s full length. (more…)

I recently came across designer Yukirei Greene’s line of high-quality, high-prim jewelry and accessories and, um, went kind of crazy in her shop. Yukirei has an extensive and growing collection of pieces for both men and women. I’m featuring here just a few pieces that I couldn’t leave without buying for myself. Here you see the Claw Necklace (L$180), an elaborate construction of leather-wrapped cord and fine silver chain. A gleaming ebony claw is suspended from the chain by a delicate filigree cap. The shiny leather cord has an unusual double-loop construction that’s bound to catch a few eyes, and the claw element couldn’t be further from the Seventies versions it should by all rights resemble. You know the ones I’m talking about. Your uncle probably wore one. Mine did.
