I’ve been picking up a variety of items with interesting skull-motif artwork lately, and not just because Halloween is coming. (Two of my favorite recent acquisitions are the skull-decorated high-tops and belt by Menno Ophelia.) The skull and skeleton are fascinating figures in art, especially in Mexican Day of the Dead artwork, which I see a lot of in Los Angeles. I think their use and appearance in artwork, and our response to them, says something interesting, even revealing about our paradoxical fear of and fascination with the idea of Death. (Whoah, sorry, I didn’t mean to get all philosophical on you there.) This week, I’ve added to my growing collection one of Tyreak Takashi’s new sculpted neckties, just out at The Syndicate. Five different designs are currently available, but I found myself immediately clicking “Buy” on the one called “Skully”…although in fairness I was awfully close on the pink cupcake. (more…)

“And now for something completely different”.
If you’re in the market for a garbage can backpack or a blazing bi-hawk, I have some information that may be of interest to you. Jemca describes the store as, “A cross-breed of alternative punkish and, well, the simply unique. We both try to design items that may be inspired by things, but haven’t been done as of yet in SL”.
Jemca and Tyreak initially started out as the proprietors of their own individual brands. After becoming friends, involving one another in their respective creative processes and building together the symbiosis warranted a business merger. Jemca’s Alchemy Trading Co. and Tyreak’s Salvage Inc. transformed into [The Syndicate]. [TS]’s inventory is largely comprised of unisex accessories which appeal to alternative tastes. Let’s face it. You’re not going to wear a leopard print studded belt or a bracelet made of bullets unless you have a thirst for the unusual. Some product names are playful and satirical. The “Drop-a-Cop” aviators, “Wingaling” camo military hats, “Diamonds Are Forever” fur trim jacket (above, left) with gem-on-white texturing and the rusted “Screw It” necklace are among the whimsically titled goods.
