Hair Fair 2008 - holy crap, stuff for guys!

hair_fair_2008.jpgI think it took me four days to get through Hair Fair this year, a combination of spare (okay, I’ll qualify that to “more or less available”) time in my evenings during the week and weekend afternoons. Hey, there was a lot to see–87 hair designers spread across four sims.  That’s a workout even if you’re in good shape.  Somehow it just felt BIGGER this year, although I know the event took up four sims last year too.  [My memory misinformed me--Hair Fair 2007 occupied two sims, not four.  See the Comments for the authoritative scoop.]  The layout this year was a big change from last year’s more mall-like plan.  The build architecture by Rezzable (by Washu Zebrastripe, Damien Fate and Selena Gateaux, hosted in sims provided by Rezzable) reflected Mayan influences, as you can see in the large structure shown here, a kind of “temple” pyramid which served as an arrival/welcome area.  There was a comfortably appointed rest area as well as displays featuring custom styles for auction to benefit Locks of Love and winners of a Flickr photo contest.  Designer booths were arranged in ranks around the central temple in long rows set at angles to one another.  If it sounds confusing–it certainly could be, if for instance I had (hypothetically, of course) crashed or relogged a few times and lost track of where I had already been.  If it sounds exhausting to you–I suppose it might be, especially if you tried to do the whole thing in one sitting.  If it sounds like fun–well, I had a good time shopping (hair whore that I am) and chatted with some nice people along the way.

Think about it this way: I go to Hair Fair so you don’t have to.  :D (more…)

Freebies from Rich People Stores

Rich Folk Outfit 1Remember me? For the few of you who do.. no I didn’t die. I’ve just been very busy with RL and then “relaxed” a bit with a week of summer vacation. My vacation isn’t quite over yet, but I felt that I had to cover some freebies that might disappear soon. My laptop’s onboard graphics aren’t good enough SL so I snuck onto a friend’s machine to install SL to snap a few pics for this post. Thus, this post is brought to you by my friend with no desktop password :P

Anyway, a long time ago I said that I couldn’t buy fancy clothes cuz I’m poor. Well, now a good number of those rich stores have freebies all in one spot: KMADD Enterprise. KMADD had a lot of gifts out from their opening, which disappeared a lil while back, before I could cover them (I hadn’t started blogging when they disappeared). Its not all bad though, because they replaced them with different gifts from a handful of the KMADD stores, including Tonic, Tango NY, Endeavor, Indigo, Redgrave, Mechanism, Mhaijik Things, SF Design, and of course MADesigns. Men’s Corner: Skins and hair

antonio_pale.jpgIn Second Life we have the opportunity to express ourselves, via our avatars, in ways that may not be easily accessible to us or even possible in real life.  Designer clothing may be daily wear for us in SL, while in real life it’s a luxury that may or may not be possible for us.  Changing our skins and hair, though, is a different story—neither quick nor easy in real life, but a matter of a few simple clicks in SL.  This issue’s theme is “The Body,” and in this column I want to share with you designs by a few of my favorite skin and hair designers–some new, some old favorites, some you might not have heard of, but I think all are doing great work.

One of my favorite skins in every aspect is “Antonio,” by Funk Schnook.  When checking out a skin, I find that I always look first at the face, and I love the way Antonio’s feature detailing (including all the facial hair choices, which are very well done) works on my avatar.  Two levels of muscle definition are available, and I remember Funk being a little surprised that he felt the skin worked well on my slim shape, as he had designed it with more “built” shapes in mind.  Here you see the less-defined in the Pale skin tone, with the Stubble with Soul Patch facial hair option.  L$1850 for a single skin, or L$4500 for a four-pack; demos available in the store.  Available in four tintable skin tones and a variety of facial hair and makeup options at FNKY! (FNKY Cake 136, 69, 24). (more…)

New: Hair by Tami McCoy

modern_front.jpgBefore I get started, let me vent for a moment.  It’s turning out to be one of those days and I’d like this to be all about me, just briefly.  Thanks in advance for your indulgence.  So last night I was busily taking pictures of these new hairstyles by Tami McCoy and quite pleased with how things were looking.  You’ll also note that it’s not one, not two but three hairstsyles this time, so quite a few pictures were taken (I have a tendency to blink, and I like to have options).  I finished up, logged out of SL and went to review the pictures before converting them to JPEGs, because good Lord but bitmaps are big.  I started flipping through them and saw to my horror that in every single one of them the SL client interface was showing!  It might not have been so bad, but I had the camera controls conveniently located (i.e., more or less in the middle of the screen), not to mention a couple of HUDs that would have been obnoxiously difficult if not impossible to crop out.  Maybe this is why HUDs are the Devil.  I could go on…and on…but let’s just say that it actually takes longer to recreate a photoshoot (down to camera angles and lighting) that you’re happy with than it did to take the pictures in the first place.

But enough about me.  ;) (more…)

New: “Careless” hair by Tami McCoy

careless_right.jpgI first came across Tami McCoy’s hair designs at this year’s Hair Fair and went crazy over her effortlessly casual styles, her realistically detailed hair textures, and her beautiful color selection.  Just out at her shop is the new style you see here, called “Careless.”  While this style may demonstrate the carefree nature of its name, its design and construction are anything but.  The apparently uncombed strands reflect the care a professional stylist would put into creating the same illusion of random, accidental perfection–Tami is meticulous so you don’t have to be.  When you see Orlando Bloom or Johnny Depp walking down the red carpet with perfectly mussed hair, you may think it’s genetics, but no–it’s actually the result of a $400, two-hour visit with the hot Beverly Hills stylist du jour.  Fortunately for you, though, you can make Tami your own personal stylist without breaking the bank! Hair Fair 2007 Roundup

hair_fair_2007.jpgOkay, so it only took me two days to get into Hair Fair 2007.  By that I mean that I tried (unsuccessfully) to get in on opening day, April 6, but both sims (it straddles Hermit Heaven and Prim Paradise) were full every time I tried.  Curses!–foiled again.  My efforts on April 7 met with marginally greater success; I did manage to arrive on one side or the other, I forget which, but crashed almost immediately while chatting with a friend I had bumped into right outside the main gate.  When I got back in-world, it was…lagtastic!  Lagtacular!  Lagarrific!  All that and a bag of chips.  I was finally able to see Hair Fair in all its glory and do some actual shopping late in the evening on April 8.  I ended up having a lot of fun–there’s something about buying whatever catches your eye that just has that effect.  The event runs only through this Saturday, April 14, but even if you can’t get there yourself, you can still do some shopping at the designers’ own stores.  I did take home several new men’s hair styles for myself.  For your benefit, here are the fruits of my labor.
