Casual elegance for summer:

Common Thread by meriwell Faddoul

threads_button_tee_green.jpgIf you’ve been searching for the perfect casual wardrobe for summer, you may need look no further than Common Thread by meriwell Faddoul.  I didn’t know what to expect when I made my first visit to meriwell’s shop, but the clean designs and gelato-bar color palette brought back memories of Don Johnson in “Miami Vice.”  In the best possible way, of course!

I’ll start with simple and classic.  The Threads Button Tee (L$100) has a button-up front, collar and chest logo, so for my money it’s more polo than tee.  I’m not going to quibble, though.  It’s available in a handful of colors, and shown here in Green and White.  Here and throughout I’m also wearing meriwell’s Light Linen Trousers (L$100).  The fabric has a delicate crosshatch texture, and meriwell mentioned that he left off the side seam because he preferred the softer, casual feel that provided.  Three styles are included: belted, unbelted, and tapered at the ankle for wear with sculpted cuffs. Men’s Corner: Gentleman’s wear

englishman_suit_closed_blue_tie.jpgWhen I was growing up, my mother always told me that there’s a difference between being a man and being a gentleman.  As with so many things my mother told me, I’ve learned over time that this is true.  I think it’s safe to say that this rule applies equally in Second Life.  What makes one a gentleman?  The term is usually associated today with a certain propriety and courtesy in one’s conduct, but historically also had connotations of belonging to a good family and perhaps even having the right connections.  While I can’t help you with your manners or breeding, I can suggest some clothing and accessories without which no gentleman should venture into polite society.  Feel free to take these necessarily specific recommendations and implement them more generally in your own gentlemanly pursuits.

New: Leather accessories @ Studio Sidhe

wristcuff_belt_full.jpgI was unfamiliar with the creative work of designer Faery Sola until recently.  Mea culpa, but I grant myself dispensation as she has only just produced her first creations with men in mind.  Her first release was a set of leather wrist cuffs, embellished with an eleborate Celtic knot design worked into the leather.  These were so well received that Faery followed up with a collection of coordinating leather belts that feature two metalwork options and a variety of decorative accents.

The wrist cuff (L$100 each) comes in Black, Brown, Red and Tan.  (Brown is shown here, with Red in closer view below.)  The cuff, worn on the right wrist by default, is made of thick leather, its two silver-buckled straps embossed with Book of Kells-inspired artwork.  The knotwork design is similar to a much-loved silver ring I bought in Dublin and wear every day in RL.
