The yacht club is a venerable institution among the monied classes. If nothing else, it provides an outlet for spending said money, drinking liquor, lounging about on hot lazy summer afternoons, and dancing away the evenings, as immortalized in Fats Waller’s 1938 song “Yacht Club Swing.” Not to mention providing a good place to keep one’s yacht, or yachts. I’m just hoping that upcoming regatta doesn’t turn into a three-hour tour. Please don’t let me end up on an island populated by the Skipper, his Little Buddy and the rest of their motley crew (although, in all honesty, I wouldn’t mind a weekend swapping style tips with Ginger Grant). Fortunately, you don’t have to maroon yourself on an uncharted desert isle just to be one of the Idle Rich. In swaffette Firefly’s new “SF Design Henley” outfit, you too can be Thurston Howell, III. All you need to provide is your very own Lovey. (more…)

Chances are that you’ve at least heard of Relay For Life, the annual overnight fundraising walk benefiting the American Cancer Society. The event is designed to further awareness of cancer prevention, treatments and cures; to remember those who have been lost to cancer and celebrate survivors; and to raise money for ongoing cure research. The Second Life embodiment of this effort is Relay For Life of Second Life. In 2007, through the efforts of 40 teams RFL of SL raised a grand total of over L$118,000! (more…)

Remember me? For the few of you who do.. no I didn’t die. I’ve just been very busy with RL and then “relaxed” a bit with a week of summer vacation. My vacation isn’t quite over yet, but I felt that I had to cover some freebies that might disappear soon. My laptop’s onboard graphics aren’t good enough SL so I snuck onto a friend’s machine to install SL to snap a few pics for this post. Thus, this post is brought to you by my friend with no desktop password
Anyway, a long time ago I said that I couldn’t buy fancy clothes cuz I’m poor. Well, now a good number of those rich stores have freebies all in one spot: KMADD Enterprise. KMADD had a lot of gifts out from their opening, which disappeared a lil while back, before I could cover them (I hadn’t started blogging when they disappeared). Its not all bad though, because they replaced them with different gifts from a handful of the KMADD stores, including Tonic, Tango NY, Endeavor, Indigo, Redgrave, Mechanism, Mhaijik Things, SF Design, and of course MADesigns. So, Muism dropped a freebie. It’s been blogged a few times. Honestly, I don’t like it much. The flexi prim bottom to the jacket looks a bit weird. While the prims come in a few sizes and are modifiable, they are no mod and the collar and tail are linked, limiting the proportions of the item so there’s a chance you can’t fit them correctly. However — its a freebie, and beggars can’t be choosers. Maybe you’ll need it for a costume. Who knows? I’m wearing it with the sleeves rolled up, but you can wear it with sleeves rolled down as well. The non-prim part can be worn on the jacket or shirt layer. Grab it by joining the Muism group and looking in the archives.
Anyway, I’m wearing more than just the jacket. Under it I’m wearing a white tank from Draconic Kiss, available for free in the far back corner of the store. It comes in four colors: white, black, red and blue. There’s also a tshirt pack with the same colors too. The back corner seems like a discount corner in general, there is other stuff for relatively cheap back there. All are available on the shirt layer only, which limits their usefulness. However, they do fit under jackets in a pinch and are quite useful like that, and the price can’t be beat. (more…)

For my final post of 2007, I thought I’d make just a few suggestions for possible New Year’s Eve party attire. It seemed to me that formalwear was called for, so here are just a few of my favorites, some recent, that haven’t been featured here before.
If you’re looking for a beautifully designed traditional tuxedo, consider the variety of styles by designer edo Tone. The simple, classic style at right (L$400) has clean lines, a notched silk collar, and silk-edged pockets. The pants are elegantly textured, with a cleanly defined crease. The shawl collar tux at left (L$500) is done with the same attention to detail. Also available are a “High Grade” tux (L$600), with jacket textured in deep charcoal rather than inky black, and for variety a grey tux (also L$600). Note that the prices given here are for the tuxedo jacket and pants only; all tuxedo styles are also available in “coordinated sets” with wing collar shirts, vests, cummerbunds, and ties in various colors and styles. These accessory items are also available individually, so you can mix and match or expand your wardrobe with specific items to your personal taste. (more…)

In addition to the Santa hats at Chicanery and the Candy Cane at Gaslights Emporium, I found a number of great holiday freebies this year. One man’s no-brainer is another man’s brilliant inspiration, and rather than sit on these selfishly I decided to share just a few of my favorites here. I hit the holiday jackpot, so to speak, at Wilted Rose, where I found this Winter Outfit by Lotti Lusch for just L$1. This really is a complete outfit–the set includes pants, shirt-layer V-neck sweater with prim cuffs, chunky prim shoes, long flexi scarves in red and grey, and fuzzy ear muffs. The sweater, pants and scarves are very nicely done, with realistic fabric textures. The pants in particular look like they feel soft, comfortable and happily worn. If you only spend a single L$ on yourself this holiday season, drop it on this outfit–it’s easily the best quality-and-value bang for your Linden buck. Ladies note–the set includes a women’s version too! (more…)

So what if, as the song says, the weather outside is frightful? I’m such a whore for sweaters and coats as it is, I barely need winter as an excuse. This month you get to benefit from my hedonistic accumulation of cold-weather wardrobe items, as I’m sharing some of my favorites, both old and new.
First up, an old favorite of mine. These Pea Coats by Donmai Frederick, released last winter, have classic lines and a beautiful wool fabric texture. The set includes coats in six colors: Beige, Black, Blue (as shown here), Brown, Gray and Green. A simple undershirt also adds shape and bulk to the coat, so you look like you’re layering properly for the cold weather, just like your mother told you. As if that weren’t enough, you also get four flexi scarves, plain and striped, in short and longer lengths. Undershirt and scarves are tintable, so you can customize to your heart’s content. Also available in a set styled for women. Pick these up for L$300 for the set at Back and Forth (Metabirds 192, 71, 25). (more…)

Global Warming is, by all reckoning, here to stay. Polar bears running across cocktailing ice, Polynesians aboard outriggers besaddled with backpacks and lunchpails, grasshoppers growing large, learning Missourah-speak and taking jobs in the ethanol and methamphetamine industries–truly, it contains the seeds of planetary catastrophe. And yet… if one looks, the silver lining is there. Moscow eschews the thwarting snow for fields of lush grain. Canada’s warm denizens and chill winds welcome a monied immigrant class from the south and finally put the Northwest Territories to use as a grand vacationland. The Sahara becomes a sea of glass. So why not light gray for fall suiting? It’s been many a year since anyone paid mind to them that wear white after Labor Day, and stripes and stripes have lived together comfortably for years thanks to Etro and Cannon. When it’s 70 in November, a man’s tweed hangs on him like a Neanderthal’s furs–he needs something with a bit less mass. (more…)

I don’t know about where you live, but October was hot where I live. It didn’t feel like autumn in any way. Now that it’s November (either finally or how did that happen so quickly? depending on your perspective), and starting to cool down a bit, it’s time to think about dressing for fall. I love this time of year–digging deep into the dresser’s biggest drawer for sweaters is one of my favorite things.
The new “Autumn” set by swaffette Firely of SF Design is destined to be another of my favorite things this season. If you look good and feel good in earth tones, take a look and give it your serious consideration. Its contrasting textures are beautifully coordinated, and the different clothing items layer flexibly for a variety of looks suitable for different levels of “dressiness.” (more…)

The Pirate of the Seas
Ah, the lonely life of the pirate. There’s something darkly romantic about the idea of the dangerous gentleman (or scoundrel) who make his risky and unconventional living plying the sea lanes for riches, rum, and other desirable commodities. Designer swaffette Firely of SF Design brings her considerable talents to bear on this interpretation of the classic pirate captain’s attire of choice. The new Captain’s Frock Coat (L$180) comes in both Black, as shown here, and a dashing Red. Either will impress the surly midshipman, craven deckhand, or about-to-be-boarded adversary. Clearly, the man wearing this coat is not one to be trifled with. (more…)

Today’s your lucky day–I’ve got not just one but two, count ‘em two new casual footwear styles for you, both from Swaffette Firefly of SF Design. Here you see the Terra Sandals, a solid interpretation of familiar rubber sole, nylon canvas strap sandals. I have no idea what high-tech magic goes into building the carbonized rubber soles (or whatever they are) in RL, but the Terra soles look just like ‘em. They’re thick and a little chunky, with a bit of a lift from toe to heel and an interesting wavy division between the lighter and darker, top and bottom layers of the sole. (more…)

High on my list of nice problems to have is “too many options”. Sometimes a designer creates several different variations on a theme, and it’s hard to choose which one of the many options you like best. Such is the case with the Oxford Morning Suit from SF Design, the next installment in my survey of formal wear for the holidays. swaffette Firefly has made thisoutfit in a number of color choices, and it was hard to pick just one. I was torn between the one with the black jacket and charcoal gray pants with gold vest (pictured here) and a variation with black jacket and pants with blood-red vest and tie. But since I already have several black-and-red suits in my wardrobe, I decided to go with the gold vest. No sense getting stuck in a rut.
The set contains pants, jacket (with lower jacket on the skirt layer), gold vest (on the shirt layer) and white shirt with gold tie (on the undershirt layer). The design of this suit is outstanding, and the workmanship is top-notch. Check out thecrisp pinstripes on the pants, the realistic shading of the wrinkles, and the detailing of the vest buttons - the bottom vest button is left undone, a subtle but nice touch. (more…)
