You know the type. You see them hanging around at family holiday parties, off to the side. This one’s just like all the rest–he’s your typical goth/emo/slacker boy, or whatever they’re into now. God only knows. He looks like he might be one of your wife’s cousin’s kids. And what’s with the attitude? This one’s sullen, broody, moody, like he’s disappointed by the world. You can’t get a word out of him, so don’t bother trying. You’d think his lips really were sewn shut or something. Don’t expect him to step up for karaoke, much less put on an actual costume. At least he made his face up, give him credit for that. But it’s a little too scary, really. That kid is seriously weird. I mean, what’s wrong with a cheap plastic mask? And would it kill him to bob for apples with the little kids? At least it would make his mother happy.
The thing is, he’s both more and less ”dressed up” than he realizes. He thinks he’s so special, but really they’re all more alike than different. He and his friends try to rebel, and the result is that you can’t tell one “rebellious” gothboy from another. Trying not to be posers, they end up posing like crazy. We were nothing like that when I was his age.
Kids these days…who can understand them? (more…)

Just a quickie today. Who doesn’t like a quickie? Don’t lie.
OK, this is what happens when I go on vacation. I’d like to blame Express for cluttering up my inventory and hiding things while I’m out of town, but the reality is more like stuff just gets lost in the never-ending shuffle. Before I go any further, I must acknowledge that I picked this up on a tip from Posy, by which I mean that she sent me an excited IM immediately followed by a TP summons, she dragged me to the shop, and she wouldn’t let me leave until I bought one for myself. She further acknowledges that she was tipped off by Donovan, by which I expect she means that he dragged her to the shop and wouldn’t let her leave until she bought one for herself. Although it’s a few weeks old by now, I shall shamelessly call it “new,” because I only just tried it on Thursday evening. That’s my story, I’m sticking with it. (more…)

One of my self-imposed rules was I would never buy anything with a skull on it. I guess such rules are made to be broken. Risey Arai signed that rule’s death warrant by creating the some of the best leather jackets on Second Life. I’m not a big leather jacket fan and until this week, I felt pretty certain that Nihil Graves’s Tiger Tank jacket was the only leather jacket I’d ever need. Well, this week I bought four leather jackets. And two of them feature skulls prominently. But, oh my, they’re worth breaking a few rules for when you look at the details.
I bought two versions of the Rider’s Jacket. The jackets are primarily black leather, but the top of the chest, back, shoulders and sleeves feature a panel of colour. Three of them are rich colours: blue, purple and red, and the other three are more muted: a drab green, grey and brown. On to these coloured panels, front and back, is printed the aforementioned skull design, somewhat faintly as if it’s wearing off. There is also writing, but it’s hard to make out. The brand name Sey is there, with bunches of numbers and then the sim location of the main store, Honmoku. The leather is nicely rippled with the attendent highlights and shadows and the coloured panel has a marbled-effect texture. In extreme close-ups, the resolution is lower than you’d like, but it only really shows on the zip running down the front of the jacket. It’s not a big problem, though, there’s a lot of other stuff to look at. (more…)
