New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: May 28 - June 3, 2007

Woo. This week had been … well … different. With the dawn of sculpted prim (”sculptie”) capability, many designers have wasted no time in incorporating this new feature into their products. The results are impressive.

There were actually quite a few new articles I wanted to include in this week’s round-up, however, there was just so much stuff that I couldn’t humanly cram it all in. That being said, I’ll quickly give those who don’t regularly check the forums or other style blogs the heads up that:

  • Garbage Prototype of [Random] has created some jeans as well as a set of vest-and-tee combos (fyi, he’s really feeling Lily Allen at the moment).
  • Jesseaitui Petion of Aitui Tattoo & Piercing/Renown has rolled out a slew of non-full body tattoos for both sexes at Aitui. He’s also put out flexi neck bandanas and v-necked longsleeves called “Three4th” in 4 colours. And lastly, he’s beefed up his Advance skins which now boasts over 70 skins in 3 light to dark skintones with various facial hair options.
  • Lost Thereian of Naughty Designs has released some long-awaited short styles for men (“Dare” and “Modern Edge”).
  • Mystikal Faddoul of Mystikal Hair Designs came out with “Brat”, a flexifed style with scultped hat.
  • Nephilaine Protagonist of Pixeldolls puts sculpties to the test with a collection of tintable longleeves, jeans, and a velvet jacket.

New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: April 22-28, 2007

Posting on a Sunday again. I might have to make this a part of the usual ritual.

This week some counter culture hair and apparel made their way into the retail market, allowing avies to let down or muss up their hair, salvage stuff from the dirty clothes hamper, and adorn themselves in the non-traditional if they so choose. Not everyone wants to look as though they got lost on their way to a Club Monaco photo shoot. SL designers have been great lately in putting out products for residents who want to highlight their non-standard, unusual or just regular down-to-earth features. Aged skin, thinning hair, shapes with wider waistlines and a host of other items for ordinary people.

I’m feeling a little rant moment coming on. I promise it’ll be short. <start rant> Ours is a world where you can choose to be one of a bajillion different types of fantastical creatures - chibi fox, dragon, jogauni, phoenix, sphinx, etc. - but if you wanted to be a Filipino guy in a traditional barong tagalog or a Polynesian guy in a comfortable lavalava you would be faced with severely limited choices. Am I the only one that thinks that’s a little odd?</end rant>

I look forward to the coming weeks and months where we continue to recognize and reflect our diversity in-world. I hope you do too.

New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: April 1-7, 2007

0_header_twimf.gifWhat hath Catero wrought?! I wanted to start this segment as a means to briefly sum up seven days worth of men’s style news while still fulfilling the commitments of the real world and maintaining some level of fun in Second Life. There were tons of stuff that warranted coverage this week! Some designers have kept me busy with multiple product releases and the skin market has been in overdrive, not to mention the opening of Hair Fair ‘07.

I highly suggest that you surf the waves of lag and visit Hair Fair. Several stylists (old and new) have some interesting styles for their male customers and its a great opportunity to see where in-world hair trends are heading. Did you know that the AVEDA institute established its presence in SL this week (check the details on the ETD blog)?

New: Men’s hair @ Mystikal Hair Designs

chico_front.jpgchico_side.jpgIt’s always a good day when Mystikal Faddoul announces a new release in her line of men’s hair–she’s one of my favorite hair designers in SL.  The style I’m featuring here is called “Chico.”  This is a casual, youthful style, short in the back and on the sides, slightly longer in front.   Overall, it’s pleasantly asymmetrical, yet still well balanced.  Carefully placed flexi sections enhance the realism and add life.  The tousled strands in front and on the sides, along with the spikey hint of a “rooster tail” in the back, keep “Chico” from looking too sleek or stuffy. New: Combover hair @ Mystikal Hair Designs

mystikaldesigns_snapshot_001.jpgWe’ve all seen him. He’s the random guy you see on the subway during your morning commute or the guy reading the newspaper at Starbucks. He could be your coworker, doctor, accountant, professor, even your dad. And for whatever reason, he has chosen to hold on to the last few threads of hair crowning the top of his head for dear life. His rationale will not allow him to shave it completely bald or low. It is the infamous “comb-over”. I would not classify it as hairstyle, but rather the leftovers of a hairstyle that once was. The sides remain intact, with one side grown long and then meticulously rearranged over the bald area on the top of the head to cover it as completely as possible. I imagine there’s lots of gel and/or hair spray involved to keep it in place. (more…)

Outfit: “Mad Love”

mad_love_full.jpgI’m trying something new here, and a little bit different.  Actually, I’m shamelessly stealing Ben Vanguard’s “Outfit of the Day” concept from his new blog.  I told him that really I wouldn’t be stealing, it would be more of an homage.  He laughed, so I think I’m safe.  ;)

You’ll notice that I’m not calling this an “Outfit of the Day” post–I won’t be doing this every day, but if the response is positive I may do it once in a while.  This is also a perfect opportunity for me to showcase some great new items that I haven’t been able to feature in a dedicated review post.  If you’re interested in trying your hand at something like this for the blog, let me know!

I’m calling this ensemble “Mad Love” after the fantastic tee I started with and built from there.  Both the Mad Love shirt and Muddy Cut Tyler Jeans pictured here are by designer Rhyph Somme and are available at Sidewalk (formerly RS Creations) at Isabella 102, 21, 123.  The graphic and artistic design on this shirt are gorgeous, from the rough-edged band of the knit collar to the subtle torso contouring and detailing.  My mama always told me that redhead boys shouldn’t wear red clothes, but I think we can cut her some slack there–after all, she’s never seen me quite like this. New: Shaggy hair @ Mystikal Hair Designs

momo_front.jpgI’m usually a neat and proper kind of guy (”No!” I hear you all shouting), but I’ve found some great shaggy hair styles lately that I like a lot.  Lost Thereian’s “Gabriel” style come to mind, and also his “Untamed” style.  And now Mystikal Faddoul adds to my shaggy repertoire with her new “Momo” style, just released at her shop, Mystikal Hair Designs.  Less angelic than “Gabriel,” wilder even than “Untamed,” “Momo” has a real just-rolled-out-of-bed-but-I-still-look-great vibe.  The overall feel is one of controlled chaos, as the many crazy flipped-up ends really do look like you washed, towel-dried, ran your fingers through your hair and “shook your head, darling.”  José Eber would be proud!  When I was in seventh grade, I so wanted my hair to look like this, but neither it nor my parents would cooperate.  Now I can fill in that gap in my junior high experience without reliving my childhood.  ;) (more…)

New: Men’s hair @ Mystikal Hair Designs

scruff_front.jpgMystikal Faddoul has just released two great new entries in her men’s hair line at Mystikal Hair Designs.  The quality of design and execution is equally high on both, but as you can see they couldn’t be much more different in look and feel.

“Scruff” is a shorter style, designed by Mystikal to resemble the real life hairstyle of a good friend.  I like the impression it gives of being nicely cut but casually mussed — it’s neat without being slicked back or formal.  The flexi strands and bangs in the front add life and interest.  This is a great style that works really well for me, and I know I’ll be wearing it regularly ( “Drew” may finally get some time off :) ).

scruff_back.jpg“Scruff” is priced at L$250 and is available in 18 colors including Copper (pictured), Red, Brown, Black, Blonde and Mahogany.
