And now for something completely unrelated to hair

apres_cork.jpgAfter spending several days focused almost exclusively on hairstyles, it’s really nice to get back to clothing items and the fun (because, after all, it is fun) of putting a “look” together.  I know I can always count on Shelly Toonie to provide any number of choices for that “certain something” that any outfit needs come together rather than fall apart.  Shelly’s new “Après” shirt/sweater combos are just what the doctor ordered to help me recover from a slight but noticeable case of Post-Hair Fair Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (PHFCFS).

The mechanics here are straightforward, even basic (which frankly at this point I find comforting)—and anyway, as always it’s execution that makes the real difference.  Each set includes a layered shirt/sweater in coordinating colors.  You can wear the shirt/sweater tucked or untucked, as it’s thoughtfully provided on all clothing layers.  However, you can’t wear the shirt and sweater individually as they’re rendered together on the clothing layers, and not included as separates.  The combo has a neat, well-groomed look when tucked in, but me, I prefer the extravagantly casual loose shirttails on the untucked jacket layer.  The fabric texture and shading work are well executed and handsome.  Take special note of the shading that defines the pecs—it’s clean, strong and masculine, but not overdone. In celebration of the store’s grand re-opening, you can pick up a gift box of freebies at Moonshine.  Look for the package on the table outside the main entrance.

[Men From Boys] Essentials: Sweaters

sey_vest_texture.jpgStarting with this issue, Second Style Magazine dramatically expands its coverage of menswear.  Of course, this issue is All Guys, All the Time, but going forward you’ll see more men’s fashions each issue in a variety of new columns and features.  I’m very happy no longer to be the sole voice speaking for men in this publication, but the change naturally leaves me wondering—what direction do I take now?

For starters, the name of the column has changed.  While menswear doesn’t take up nearly the SL acreage occupied by women’s fashion, it’s still a worthy, growing market and surely deserves more than a “corner.”  The new name was a suggestion from Iris that I liked better than my own ideas, and I liked it even more the more I thought about it.  Hopefully it also says something about what I’m trying and hoping to do here. New: Business as (un)usual @ SLAB, Moonshine

faze_green.jpgI rarely feel the need to look traditionally professional in SL.  You may have noticed that I keep an inworld office, although not, um, actual office hours.  It’s rather casually appointed–there’s no desk, although there is a little-used conference table– and I pretty much use it just for meetings and the occasional interview.  There are times, though, when a man needs to look like he means business, literally, and in those circumstances it’s entirely possible that no amount of themed gear will do.  While a jacket may be optional in today’s “business casual” environments (I can hear Secundus cringing from here), a quality dress shirt is essential.  Pompo Bombacci’s new “Faze” dress shirts come in four office-appropriate colors:  Cream, Light Blue, Green and Purple.  The fabric texture strikes a nice balance between freshly ironed and comfortably well worn.  If not done carefully, the former can feel too “crispy” for my taste, while the later can look like you slept in the shirt, in your car…in the office parking lot. New: Thermals and cords @ Moonshine

cross_thermal.jpgJust out at Moonshine by designer Shelly Toonie are these comfortable Men’s Thermal Shirts.  They’re completely casual, of course, but a step above a lazy Saturday morning.  With their muted organic colors and detailed artwork, these are perfectly appropriate for a (somewhat) dressy Friday evening, out with friends at your favorite local watering hole.

28_thermal_full.jpgThese finely-ribbed thermals come in five different designs: Cross (at right), 28 at left), NativeDragon and Skull (apologies to Mr. Oh).  The fabric color is slightly different for the various designs, running from slate-blue to charcoal and even a deep, dusty maroon.  Detailing in the fabric texture gives them a pleasantly rumpled look at waist and elbows, but overal the look is appropriately smooth and sleek, not disheveled like you slept in them and just rolled out of bed.

Provided on the jacket layer only, so wear them untucked or not at all.  Attractively priced at L$75 each. (more…)

New: Retro shirts @ Moonshine

cocktails.jpgA little while back I reviewed some great, simple sweaters by Shelly Toonie of Moonshine. Since then, she has continued to release a handful of new men’s designs every week or so. This time out, she caught my eye with this collection of retro styled shirts. These feature a strong two-tone design with nice detailing and eye-catching graphics. The Cocktail design I’m wearing here reminds me somewhat of a shirt I have in RL that’s always a big hit at cocktail parties. Too bad I can’t bring Shelly’s shirts with me into RL and further increase my popularity. ;) Oh well–I can always just serve more drinks.

These slick vintage designshappily press ournostalgia buttons while still feeling fresh and new. And vertical stripes and blocking are always slimming, so everybody wins! (more…)

New: Men’s sweaters @ Moonshine

argyle_blue.jpgI love autumn. I love breaking out my sweaters from the cedar chest and pulling the cords out of the drawer. The weather turns brisk (never mind that it was 95 degrees not all that many miles from my RL house yesterday, apparently a new record); I get to wear long sleeves and coats. It’s all good. :)

argyle_earth.jpgDesigner Shelly Toonie of Moonshine clearly knows me, or at least my mindset–her new men’s sweaters are perfect for a bright fall day or a crisp autumn evening, either casually paired with jeans and sneakers or worn with khakis or slacks for a dressier look. These snappy argyle sweaters have a sleek, flattering fit with realistic wrinkles and folds that really sell the woolly texture. They come in both the regular length (shirt layer) for tucking in and in a longer, untucked version (jacket layer). The longer version has a slightly irregular bottom hem, avery nice touch. Available individually in Blue, Earth and Gray (not pictured) for L$85 each. (more…)
