00_hollow_earth_underdark.jpgWhen Posy and I set out to explore the vast, unknown depths of Hollow Earth Underdark, our excitement was tempered by a thrill of apprehension.  What would we discover?  What secrets lay in wait for us?  What mysteries might transform us?  Would we need a travel buddy? Dressing up and going out

dressing_up_and_going_out_full.jpgI love dressing up and going out.  I mean, hey, who doesn’t?  There’s just something about looking good that makes you feel good.  Plus, as my granny used to say, “Looking nice shows people you care.”  If there’s one thing my sisters and I have learned in life it’s that, over time, our granny and our mom are always right.

What does it take to “look good”?  Of course there’s no simple way to answer that question, but I’m going to take a fairly traditional approach today and start with a suit.  If you’re worried that this means I’m suggesting that “looking good = stuffy,” fear not!  And trust me.

Although it’s not a new discovery, I truly feel you just can’t go wrong with the classic Wool Suit by Blaze Columbia.  There are certainly plenty of other suits out there, and I own a number of other fine ones, but this is the one I keep coming back to–the lines are clean, the style classic, the detailing meticulous, and the colors to die for.  I love this luxurious, softly shiny blue like I love my dog.  Well, like I imagine I would love my dog, if I had a dog. Diamonds (and other shiny things) are a boy’s best friend

under_the_sea.jpgNothing says “I love you” like jewelry.  And I’m not just talking about the ladies here–it’s a not-very-secret secret that guys like jewelry, too.  I think it’s because there’s so little good lingerie out there for us.  I mean, hey, a good pair of boxer briefs and we’re done.  (Although, hmm, there are always silks…)  I’m not talking about watches, either, at least not today.  I love watches, but for me they’re more an accessory item than jewelry.  Jewelry is something you wear just because it’s pretty.  There, I said it and I’ll say it again: pretty.  Deep down, you know it’s true.

In case you haven’t noticed, Valentine’s Day is coming right up, check your calendar!  For your gift-giving consideration, I thought I’d suggest some jewelry items that I love and admire.  I’m hoping that you (or your man) might like them too.

Newish: Steampunk jewelry @ Mhaijik Things

steampunk_scientist.jpgHe knew that most of his neighbors thought him mad.  He preferred to think of himself as eccentric, although he suspected that most at his end of London would find that far too mild a word.  No matter.  Although it was not (and for obvious reasons could never be) public knowledge, he knew that his mechanised creations pleased none other than the Queen herself.  He was satisfied that, if he was indeed mad, it was madness of a uniquely creative and inspired nature.  If this was madness, then he would be mad, and happily so. Always chasing rainbows @ Mhaijik Things, SLAB

crono_polo_light_blue.jpgI have a confession to make: I haven’t been to a pride festival in a few years. It’s not that I don’t live in a city that has a large one every year–I live in Los Angeles, and L.A. Pride is one of the largest pride events in the U.S. (The 2008 festival was this past weekend, June 6, 7 and 8…and no, you wouldn’t have seen me there.) It’s not that I’m not proud–my friends would be the first to agree that excessive humbleness has never been my problem. ;) And it’s not that they aren’t fun–they certainly can be, I’m always up for a good time, and if you want to try your target marketing on me, knock yourself out.

I suppose you’d be justified in wondering if I’ve just gotten lazy, and can’t be bothered to turn out (so to speak). But I think it’s more that my life has simply become very domestic, and we like to stay home or just chill and hang out with friends. (more…)

Today’s forecast: casual, with touches of elegance

clash_shorts_outfit.jpgThe weather where I live in RL has been what might be called “unseasonably warm”–I think it was supposed to be 85F today, and it’s still winter, at least technically, for another couple of weeks.  Just so you’ll know, when I’m dressing more realistically for SL (as opposed to indulging my steampunk fetish or trying out other fantasy wear), I tend to lean toward things that would be appropriate for the current RL season and weather where I am.  Given the recent uptick in temperatures, I was happy to see the new Clash Shorts by serjordan Bonetto of Emery.  These are crisply textured and very casual, with plenty of folds and wrinkles–why iron if you’re just going hiking?  Rolled cuffs add some dimension, and the prim side pockets have interesting tab-and-buckle detailing.  You can get them in four subtle colors: Blue, Brown, Green, and Grey.  Permissions are Modify / No Copy / Transfer.  L$100 a pair at Emery (Quest III 155, 31, 22). Isn’t It Romantic? Part 2 - Eros Designs, JCS Shoes, Mhaijik Things

james_after_hours_full.jpgSince one round of Valentine’s Day-appropriate ideas seems hardly sufficient, I thought I’d share a few more suggestions with you.  Here’s hoping that one or more of these designs will fit into your romantic plans.  And remember–sometimes, something you buy for yourself is also a gift for some else…if you do it right.  ;)

Keth Mommsen’s “James After Hours” (L$150) is part of the “Signature Line” at Eros Designs.  It seems to be conceived and presented primarily as an add-on to the James Tuxedo (L$500), but it also stands on its own as great, inexpensive “after-party” formal attire. (more…)

Men’s Corner: Isn’t It Romantic?

charlatan_coat_white_full.jpgWhenever I heard the word “romantic” I am immediately reminded of a scene in the movie “Moonstruck.” You know the scene—where Raymond Capomaggi, still madly in love with his wife Rita after many years together and apparently all but undone by the lovers’ moon that seems to be influencing everyone in sight, sings aloud a snippet of Rogers and Hart’s “Isn’t It Romantic?” Apparently, he was a tiger last night. ;)

One thing we can take away from this delightful moment is that romance is not the exclusive province of the young and beautiful—anyone can be romantic. Maybe this is a bit of a stretch, but I think this also suggests that dressing romantically doesn’t just mean lipstick-kissed boxer briefs (not that there’s anything wrong with that)—it can be anything that represents an effort to connect to your significant other and make something special happen for both of you. New: “Nosferatu” coat @ Schadenfreude + JCS Shoes, Mhaijik Things

nosfercoat_silverscreen_full.jpgYou probably already know that I’m a horror movie buff.  One of the classics of the genre is F. W. Murnau’s 1922 “Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens” ["Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror"].  The film was ssentially an unauthorized film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, and although character names and some plot details had been changed (Max Schreck starred as “Count Orlok,” not Count Dracula), Stoker’s widow sued the production company–and won.  All prints were ordered destroyed, but thankfully some survived.  (Wikipedia presents a decent summary of the film’s history.)  Far from genteel or gentlemanly, Schreck’s undead count is arguably the most feral and beastly interpretation of this iconic character.  Murnau’s film was mind-bogglingly re-imagined by Warner Herzog in 1979 as “Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht” ["Nosferatu: Phantom of the Night"], this time with Stoker’s original character names and with Herzog’s “best fiend” Klaus Kinski in the Max Schreck role. New skin in progress @ Aitui

advance_pale_tank_close.jpgSo, I was trolling around on the web recently (I get bored at work sometimes, you know how that is) and came across Jesseaitui Petion’s blog, where he’s beginning to share pictures of the progress he’s making on his new skin, called “Reclaim,” currently in the works.  I think it’s great when a designer is not only willing to let us in on designs in development but also interested in feedback along the way.   Take a look, see what Jesse’s working on, and give him a little encouragement now and then–I think he’ll be glad to hear from you.  He says he’s really taking his time, enjoying the work and loving the new skin.  His current plan is to have “Reclaim” ready for release in January or February 2008.  In the meantime, you can pick up his current skins, due to be discontinued at the end of November, at great sale prices: L$600 for “Premier,” L$900 for “Advance.” (more…)

Outfit: Back In The Day…

I admit it! I’m a shameless child of the 80’s…

BackInTheDay_A.jpgMTV played music videos. Reality shows were unheard of. MTV played (OxO) music videos. Reality shows were unheard of. Everybody had hair up to there (holds hands well over head). Now that I think about it, that’s where the hole in the ozone layer came from…my sister spraying her hair into a wave of epic proportions.

Said sister, name of binary1oh gives the author a look affectionately known as ‘hairy eyeball’.

Back when the Transformers were cel-drawn animated cartoons and took over my afternoons. Long before computer animation and of course, our Second Life and all of its residents…

Ripped jeans that were airbrushed on. A worn button-down shirt over your favorite rock band or cartoon t-shirt. The mashed-up hat worn low. The weirdest collection of bracelets and jewelry I could find… (more…)

Men’s Second Style anniversary necklace

mss_anniversary_necklace_front.jpgIt may have been on your radar that Men’s Second Style recently celebrated its first anniversary.  (Of course, you may have noticed because I made a point of mentioning it here.)  In celebration of that truly momentous milestone, you are invited to drop by my inworld office (click here or check my Picks) to pick up a gift, kind of a thank-you for reading along and supporting our efforts here.

This gold choker-style necklace was created exclusively for Men’s Second Style by designer Mhaijik Guillaume of Mhaijk Things.  In Mhaijik’s own words:  “I used Gold Bar beads, deep blue sapphire pukka, a warm deep walnut wood center bead, and slips and swirls of leather threads with tiny knots for whimsy.  At the back is a golden interlocking closure, pukka and more leather knotted whimsy, with a leezard added to the left side.”  Its design is intentionally reminiscent of the necklaces I covered in my first review of Mhaijik’s designs, on 11 September 2006.  I think this piece is especially beautiful, although I may be biased as it does reflect my own tastes.  I do hope that you like it, too.  :) (more…)

New: Leezard jewelry @ Mhaijik Things

leezard_set_gold.jpgleezard_necklace_detail.jpgYou may remember designer Mhaijik Guillaume’s Gecko Collection of men’s jewelry from some time back.  (If not, now is a fine time to take a look.)  Mhaijik’s new “Leezard” designs feature shiny precious metals, polished natural stones, and stylized metalwork designs that may at first seem abstract, but closer inspection reveals the essential reptile.  The all-prim Leezard is based on a RL sketch by Mhaijik.  The pieces shown here make use of warm gold and rich amber; also available in silver with blue apatite beads. Due to a massive power outage in my building I was unable to access the internet. After going through the five stages of grieving (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance) I decided not to stare at my blank computer screen and went out to enjoy the Canada Day atmosphere and celebrations across the city. Canadians and Americans, please enjoy your festivities.

And now on to fashion. As always, if you have your ear to the ground and stumble across a really great designer please send me an IM. Please note that for the month of July I’m taking a break from this weekly column.

casadelshai_snapshot_006.jpgCasa Del Shai. A follow up to the suave elegance of last week’s Barong Tagalogs with a westernized twist in the Amorsolo and Luna suits. The traditional Filipino shirts have been paired with a suit jacket that has been embroidered/screen printed on the back panel and a crisp pair of matching slacks. The ensemble sells @ 600L and can be purchased in Deco (112, 150, 30).

sale_indie_snapshot_001.jpgSale @ Indie. Don’t forget to check out Indie Rainbow’s stores in Louise and Sede di Marte before July 5th and take advantage of the liquidation sale on his hand drawn goodies for men and women. Once the sale is over his current collection will be retired.

vrdesigns_snapshot_006.jpgVR Phlux. Another addition to the swing collection. “Harris” is a sharp tweed suit with shirt and tie, vest with pocket watch detail layer, jacket layer and belted “Hollywood” slacks. The suit sells for 300L at phlux (169, 163, 35).

For those who have been hiding under a rock SL turns 4 years old this week. During all of our careers there have been many ups and downs - n’est-ce pas? - as we all go through our own growing pains in this surreal virtual space.

Within this anniversary week so much is in development or has occurred in the realm of culture relating to the Men’s Second Style blog as well as resident lifestyle in general.

contest_faceofasia07.jpgFace of Asia Model Competition. Anyone who can coax those sliders in appearance mode to create a beautiful or handsome Asian shape is encouraged to enter this cultural modeling contest brought to us by the Asian Designers Summit. Contest guidelines can be found at the Women’s Second Style blog or by visiting the Men’s Second Style office, Casa Del Shai, Earthtones Boutique, Muse or Nicky Ree’s Boutique in-world. Face of Asia is open to all residents. Round 1 submissions close June 27, 2007 at midnight SLT.

freebies_sl4b_nora.jpgNora Body Skins by Sezmra Svarog. Since she teased audiences in mid-April with a sneak peak of her new generation of male skins in development I have been eagerly awaiting the release of her skins. This week, Sezmra displayed a more detailed vision of her skins - each appealing to a different segment of skin consumers: the toned “Hunter” and the svelte “David”. Nora is also offering up some SL4B freebies @ her shop and promises a rehaul of her store and sim.

Second Love Magazine. Tya Fallingbridge and Daphne Molinari announce this week the launch of Second Love Magazine on July 1, 2007. Second Love will be monthly PG publication covering a variety of issues affecting straight and gay residents whether in single, coupled or friendship relationships. The magazine will be accessible in-world and online. The launch party is set for July, 1st @ 7 P.M. SLT game time at Schmooze, Pixel Dreams (12, 146, 21).

As a reminder, if you are aware of any new designers or products that you discover during the week and would like to see included in this segment please look me up and IM me in-world.

Due to the fact that my wireless network has been cutting in and out unexpectedly all week I’m keeping this week’s episode ultra concise. That, coupled with frequent crashes has made SL an absolutely charming experience as of late. Before the signal fades on me again or my laptop freezes up I’m pressing “Publish”.

New: Casual wear @ Random

bestman_darkgreen_skinnyjeans_darkwash.jpgbestman_red_close.jpgGarbage Prototype has been mind-bogglingly busy out at Random these last few weeks, first with a series of new hairstyles (read about one here) and now some new casual clothing designs for the guys that are right up my alley.  They seem a natural for putting together as an outfit, and that’s what I’ve done here.  The Best Man vest/tee combo comes in seven colors:  Black, Blue, Dark Brown, Green, Orangeish, Purple and Red.  The vest colors are all muted and subdued rather than bright.  Vest and classic white tee are combined on the same clothing layer, and all seven colors are provided on both the shirt and jacket layers for tucked and untucked wear. Woo. This week had been … well … different. With the dawn of sculpted prim (”sculptie”) capability, many designers have wasted no time in incorporating this new feature into their products. The results are impressive.

There were actually quite a few new articles I wanted to include in this week’s round-up, however, there was just so much stuff that I couldn’t humanly cram it all in. That being said, I’ll quickly give those who don’t regularly check the forums or other style blogs the heads up that:

  • Garbage Prototype of [Random] has created some jeans as well as a set of vest-and-tee combos (fyi, he’s really feeling Lily Allen at the moment).
  • Jesseaitui Petion of Aitui Tattoo & Piercing/Renown has rolled out a slew of non-full body tattoos for both sexes at Aitui. He’s also put out flexi neck bandanas and v-necked longsleeves called “Three4th” in 4 colours. And lastly, he’s beefed up his Advance skins which now boasts over 70 skins in 3 light to dark skintones with various facial hair options.
  • Lost Thereian of Naughty Designs has released some long-awaited short styles for men (“Dare” and “Modern Edge”).
  • Mystikal Faddoul of Mystikal Hair Designs came out with “Brat”, a flexifed style with scultped hat.
  • Nephilaine Protagonist of Pixeldolls puts sculpties to the test with a collection of tintable longleeves, jeans, and a velvet jacket.

I’ll keep this short and sweet. This week marked the appearance of some really fun, satirical and all around distinguished articles on the men’s fashion scene. Being a joker-at-heart, as soon as I saw Gadget Gobo and Caroline Apollo’s comical devices I ran down to their stores to take a peek for myself - laughing all the way. Sometimes we all need a little ludicrously funny distraction for our wardrobes. As always designers for all categories of items put out primo content whether you seek the ludicrous or the distinguished that we just can’t help but share with the masses.

While chasing answers to a reader inquiry I had the great fortune to stumble across a skin which may be something worth investigating for those looking for a non-athletic touch.

Dive in and see if there’s something within that suits your tastes.

gypsy_necklace_front.jpggypsy_necklace_back.jpgSometimes I feel like such the evangelist, talking up Mhaijik Guillaume’s jewelry designs every chance I get.  I really can’t stop, though, and I think she deserves it.  As usual, she’s been creatively busy of late, and there are several new pieces for men worth checking out at her shop.  Here you see her new Gypsy Necklace, which features three highly detailed, mysteriously colored rings of multi-colored precious metal strung on a knotted leather cord.  The design is simple but striking, and the fit is impeccable–it was very easy to adjust the placement on my avatar, and it really looks like I’m wearing the necklace, not just floating it around my neck.  Brava, Mhaijik!  The Gypsy Necklace is available for L$250. New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: April 1-7, 2007

0_header_twimf.gifWhat hath Catero wrought?! I wanted to start this segment as a means to briefly sum up seven days worth of men’s style news while still fulfilling the commitments of the real world and maintaining some level of fun in Second Life. There were tons of stuff that warranted coverage this week! Some designers have kept me busy with multiple product releases and the skin market has been in overdrive, not to mention the opening of Hair Fair ‘07.

I highly suggest that you surf the waves of lag and visit Hair Fair. Several stylists (old and new) have some interesting styles for their male customers and its a great opportunity to see where in-world hair trends are heading. Did you know that the AVEDA institute established its presence in SL this week (check the details on the ETD blog)?

Releases at: Canimal · Earthtones Boutique · Here Comes Trouble · LILA Natural Skins · Mhaijik Things · Million Dollar Skin Lab · Mystikal Hair Designs · [Renegade] · Renown by Aitui · TRUTH *plus* Freebies! (more…)

New: Gecko jewelry @ Mhaijik Things

gecko_rings.jpgIt will come as no surprise to regular readers that I’m a big fan of Mhaijik Guillaume’s jewelry designs.  I’m a little behind the curve, as some of these pieces were released a while back, but the others are all brand new, so maybe it all evens out in the end.  A few weeks ago, with very little fanfare, Mhaijik put out these gorgeous gold and silver men’s rings.  The design is simple and classic–just a wide, shiny band of precious metal to adorn your finger.  Each ring is decorated with one of three different designs depicting a gecko.  (The same artwork can be seen screened on the rock slab in the accompanying picture.)  I don’t know why, but geckos make me smile.  Maybe it’s because they remind me of a trip to Maui several years back–the little guys are everywhere, and who doesn’t like to be reminded of a vacation trip?  Or maybe it’s because of those silly Taco Bell commercials.  You remember the ones I’m talking about,  the ones that tied in with the “Godzilla” movie release, where that little chihuahua set a box trap for Godzilla and said, “Here, leezard leezard leezard” to lure him in.  Hey, I laughed.  Maybe I’m the only one. Outfit: “Mad Love”

mad_love_full.jpgI’m trying something new here, and a little bit different.  Actually, I’m shamelessly stealing Ben Vanguard’s “Outfit of the Day” concept from his new blog.  I told him that really I wouldn’t be stealing, it would be more of an homage.  He laughed, so I think I’m safe.  ;)

You’ll notice that I’m not calling this an “Outfit of the Day” post–I won’t be doing this every day, but if the response is positive I may do it once in a while.  This is also a perfect opportunity for me to showcase some great new items that I haven’t been able to feature in a dedicated review post.  If you’re interested in trying your hand at something like this for the blog, let me know!

I’m calling this ensemble “Mad Love” after the fantastic tee I started with and built from there.  Both the Mad Love shirt and Muddy Cut Tyler Jeans pictured here are by designer Rhyph Somme and are available at Sidewalk (formerly RS Creations) at Isabella 102, 21, 123.  The graphic and artistic design on this shirt are gorgeous, from the rough-edged band of the knit collar to the subtle torso contouring and detailing.  My mama always told me that redhead boys shouldn’t wear red clothes, but I think we can cut her some slack there–after all, she’s never seen me quite like this. New: Men’s rings @ Mhaijik Things

gold_3_band_earth_quartz.jpgI first fell in love with Mhaijik Guillaume’s jewelry designs when I discovered her line of men’s necklaces, way back in September.  (That review is still available here; look for “Mhaijik Guillaume” under the Designers category in the right-hand sidebar.)  I raved then about her design work that is so beautiful but still simple and clean.  Her new men’s rings are a perfect addition to her collection.  When I dropped by the recently redesigned “Guillaume por homme” section of her shop that’s exclusively for men, Mhaijik happened to be there and we chatted for a bit.  She mentioned that the rings started out as a custom design by commission.  She then became enthralled with the idea of designing more rings.  I love the Gold 3 Band Ring with Earth Quartz, shown at left, for its gorgeous two-tone shiny gold and its lovely, simple stone. New: “Survivor” necklace @ Mhaijik Things

Survivor.jpgJust a quick update to let you know about a great new piece of casual jewelry I love, and I’m betting you’ll like it too. I had the opportunity to chat with Mhaijik Guillaume the other day and she mentioned that she had been watching “Survivor,” noticed a necklace on one of the island residents, and was inspired to create a new piece like it. (Artists and their sources of inspiration never cease to amaze me.) She offered to send me a copy to try on when it was ready. Great, I thought–a scoop! I tried the necklace on and it’s a fun, casual design that’s perfect for the beach (naturally enough), with a knotted brown leather cord and some colorful beads.

Mhaijik works so quickly that the piece is already available in her shop, Mhaijik Things (Pheosia 56, 220, 152), for a reasonable L$250. (So much for my scoop.) Look for it on the New Items board at the left side of the store, conveniently located near her other men’s jewelry. By popular request, she has already created a smaller version for female avatars, so this looks to be a very popular item. Be the first on your block–drop by and get yours today!

Review: Mhaijik Things

It’s no secret that there’s a lot more attention paid to women’s fashion than to men’s in Second Life.  Hey, that’s why you’re looking for guidance here at Second Man, right?  Turns out this truism applies for jewelry just as it does for clothing.  After looking at a lot of jewelry items, and trying out more than a few (some freebies, most not), I began to despair.  Most of the men’s stuff is overloaded with bling, too shiny, too elaborate, too magickal, too big, or just not attractive.  Oh, I found a couple of rings that I liked well enough to wear them once in a while, and one truly great watch (the Tag Heuer by Dave Moreau, available on SL Exchange).  But…it wasn’t enough.

MhaijikThings01.jpg

Enter Mhaijik Guillaume and her fantastic little shop, Mhaijik Things (Pheosia 56, 220, 152).  Yes, it’s mostly for women, mostly magickal, and a lot of crystals, vampire and goth stuff.  But there are also some beautiful pieces of men’s jewelry that will be well worth your trip. (more…)
