I don’t know about you, but all that dressing up over Halloween took a lot out of me. As fun as it was, afterward I really just wanted to grab something easy and casual out of my virtual dresser drawer and throw it on. I reached in and, lucky for me, at the top of the pile I found these spiff new track suits by Donovan Brennen. Now, I understand if you’re smiling grimly and thinking, “Ahh, hmm, track suits…” with great skepticism. But hear me out, because really these just beg to be worn. You can choose from two different styles: “M.I.A.” in warm earth tones and “Zion,” in shades of blue and green. Each set includes a jacket that can be worn with long or rolled sleeves, plus matching pants. The jackets have sculpted turned-up collar and cuffs, and the pants have sculpted slouchie cuffs and a prim drawstring. (more…)

It was a dark and stormy night when the taxi dropped me off at the high iron gates of Miskatonic University, at Arkham, Massachusetts. The driver seemed nervously distracted and sped away quickly into the darkness after unceremoniously hurling my heavy bags to the curb, but not, I noticed, without first grimacing in apparent annoyance at the paucity of the tip I had given him. I am, after all, a struggling student—now officially so—and as a consequence I must carefully mind my budgetary expenditures. (more…)

Remember me? For the few of you who do.. no I didn’t die. I’ve just been very busy with RL and then “relaxed” a bit with a week of summer vacation. My vacation isn’t quite over yet, but I felt that I had to cover some freebies that might disappear soon. My laptop’s onboard graphics aren’t good enough SL so I snuck onto a friend’s machine to install SL to snap a few pics for this post. Thus, this post is brought to you by my friend with no desktop password
Anyway, a long time ago I said that I couldn’t buy fancy clothes cuz I’m poor. Well, now a good number of those rich stores have freebies all in one spot: KMADD Enterprise. KMADD had a lot of gifts out from their opening, which disappeared a lil while back, before I could cover them (I hadn’t started blogging when they disappeared). Its not all bad though, because they replaced them with different gifts from a handful of the KMADD stores, including Tonic, Tango NY, Endeavor, Indigo, Redgrave, Mechanism, Mhaijik Things, SF Design, and of course MADesigns. A few days before I headed out on my vacation trip (having a great time, wish you were here!), I ran into Donovan Brennen as he was updating his shop at Plunder. I do think I literally ran into him, or at least landed very nearly on his head when I materialized at the landing area as I logged in. I didn’t actually realize that he was there until he said, “Hey Ryan, what are you doing here?” I could only respond honestly: “Um, I think this must be where I was when I last crashed. And gave up. Last night. And please note that I say ‘crashed’ rather than ‘logged out.’” Which I guess is, more than anything, a sad commentary on the state of my five-year-old PC and the trouble it has with the newer SL clients. But that’s another story. Anyway, he laughed and sympathized and we chatted for a while about life, the universe and everything, including his recently renewed creative efforts in SL. You might have read on Don’s blog that he’s been taking a bit of a break. But he’s back now, creative juices flowing, and he’s getting busy. (more…)

I was in a barren and empty sim, the hour was late and it was dark (I had forced midnight) when a mysterious message urgently demanded my attention. “Your mission, should you choose to accept it: for the next issue of Second Style, highlight some of the best individual designs in SL fashion of the last twelve months. This IM will self-destruct in ten seconds. Nine. Eight….”
I logged out quickly, but not before triggering a sly smile ( }:-> ). I knew that this assignment would challenge me like no other, and I would have to rely on all my skills and training. How to select just a handful of items from the many released over the past year? It seemed…impossible.
Hopefully my superiors will agree that I have succeeded. All of these creations epitomize the best of what SL design has to offer. In chronological order by month of release: (more…)

No, we’re not auctioning off designers themselves–just their creations! (We did that already anyway.) Some of my favorite designers have made donations of items from their menswear collections for auction to benefit SLRFL. Most of these items will be current and classic designs, but some may be one-of-a-kind creations just for this event. Details regarding the items included in each auction will be posted here and will also be automatically delivered to you as a notecard at the auction site, so you’ll know exactly what you’re bidding for. Be sure to step close to the BidBox, so your presence can be detected and the notecard delivered. Visit the Shopaholics For A Cause build(Motorati 205, 133, 23) to check out the current auction (look for the BidBox toward the front of the diner, near the counter) as well as other men’s and women’s items available for a donation directly to SLRFL! Be sure to take a look at the outside gas-pump vendors, too–there’s some stuff for guys out there. Auction instructions are available at the Motorati site, but feel free to IM me if you have any questions. Better yet, ask your question here in the comments and I’ll respond here as well. If something isn’t clear, it’s probably not just you, and others will be wondering too.
Our first menswear auction featuresthe followingselection of designs by Donovan Brennen of GearShift: Pheonix Sweater and Polo; Relics Casual Shoes – Futures; Pirate Cap – Natural Hair Color Pack; Patch54 Jeans; and Shadow Godfists. With all this stuff, you can put together a complete outfit, deck yourself out in serious style, and help to kick cancer’s ass while you’re doing it! All items are transferable, so you can give them away as gifts. This auction will end at approximately 8pm SLT next Wednesday, May 30. Bid early, bid often!
This series of benefit auctions will run through the months of June and July, wrapping up before the final Relay event on Saturday, July 28.

In the midst of struggling against the usual teenage demons of rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness, socially awkward Peter Parker finds himself endowed with extraordinary abilities. Superhuman strength, the capacity to cling to walls, a sixth sense that forewarns him of danger, perfect balance, speed and agility. A web-slinging hero, Spider-Man is poised to face a rogue’s gallery of powerful thieves, gangsters, and megalomaniacs. All this power and responsibility brought by the bite of an irradiated spider.
Following the wake of the cascading adventures of Spider-Man 3, GearShift swings into action with a themed ensemble dedicated to the webbed wonder. Unlike the average suit this one isn’t necessarily intended to add to your professional appearance exclusively in the boardroom. The “Spider Bite Suit” aims at netting an audience of savvy urbanites looking for something less corporate with an edgy street wise appeal. Going beyond the usual novelty clothing components, Donovan Brennen has created an entire themed suit that weaves together all the myth, mood, and magic that fans of the comic serials and movie franchise have come to associate with their friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. When I first entered SL some of the first clothes I bought were from a small store inside the Miau Haus in Yelas. I browsed around while the designer was in-store setting up new vendors. There were some hoodies, a tee and a pair of jeans that caught my eye and I ended up buying them. Some of the best purchases I’ve made in SL. In the following weeks I ended up rotating between these and other items in my meager wardrobe. What continues to appeal to me about the clothes are their finishing details (the hood attachment and neck cinch strings), the sleeve extensions in the glove layer, and lastly – but certainly my favourite – the uneven crosshatch strokes in the base fabric. The slick texturing technique created a visual impact that reminded me of the comic book art I digested in my youth.
As such, it didn’t surprise me to find out that Donovan Brennen of GearShift is a hopeless comic book junkie. And lucky for the SL male population Donovan has super powers of his own – a metahuman ability to turn pixels into sharp urban apparel. (more…)

Here’s a must-have that no guy should be without. No, that’s not redundant; it’s just me being emphatic. ;)
This bad boy pretty much speaks for itself, actually. This new ball cap by Donovan Brennen of GearShift features wonderfully detailed fabric texturing as well as realistic stitching and a shiny metal buckle on the adjustable strap around back. And who doesn’t love a skull and crossbones? It just makes you want to growl and say things like “Avast!” and “Shiver me timbers!” And now you don’t even have to look like Johnny Depp to get away with it. It’s the perfect accessory for Talk Like A Pirate Day, which for some reason seems to roll around far more often than once a year. Really, you can’t start getting ready too early. (more…)

GearShift has lately gotten to be one of my favorite places to look for casual clothes that are fresh, original, high quality, and a good value. Designer Donovan Brennen has a great eye for color and form, and his designs are always eye-catching and just fun to look at. His new collection of ten tees is done on a realistic new shirt template that he has been working on. Each shirt in the collection is unique, and the set gives you a variety of color and design options. All ten are pictured below, but here I’m showcasing just a few of my favorites. This design is called “Soul Spy.” At first the image seems entirely abstract, with no hint of a human face, but look at it for a moment and–you get it. (more…)

Donovan Brennen of GearShift has just released a great-looking casual running shoe that he calls “Relics casual.” The REDX version, which you see here, comes in brown with red detailing; other Relics designs are in the works. Donovan’s intent here is a sporty casual shoe that doesn’t fall into the Converse family, and I think he has succeeded admirably. The textures are highly detailed and extremely realistic. These are some snappy shoes! Not to mention really comfortable–I wore them all of yesterday evning, and my feet feel great.
These shoesare sized for men, and No Mod so they can’t be re-sized, but a women’s version is on the way. Available for L$300 at GearShift at The Block (Endicott 162, 72, 506). Demos are available in the shop so you can try them on before buying. (more…)

Donovan Brennen of GearShift strikes again with a couple of fantastic jumpers that are perfect for a brisk autumn quickly turning into winter. The Rough Royal Jumper and 8-Ball Jumper both feature great graphics front and back, front slash zip pockets, zipper detail on the moddable prim collar, and optional longer sleeves (worn on the glove layer).
Here I’m wearing the Rough Royal Jumper without the optional longer sleeves. As you can see, the colors are vibrant and eye-catching–I can’t tell you how much I love the beautiful blue-purple tones–and the striking graphics aren’t limited to the front but are gorgeous on the back as well.
These bright jumpers are a perfect complement to the darker hoodies Donovan gave us a while back. They will hang proudly in my closet (okay, my inventory), ready to be grabbed quickly as I dash out the door. (more…)
