Hey look I’m Ryan!

Look I'm Ryan!Hmm.. I’m short. I’m skinny. I’ve got red hair. And I’m wearing a long coat. I’m Ryan!

In fact, it was Ryan who pointed me this plain black frock-coat from Gaslights Emporium. The outfit, sans hat, is available near the entrance to the store, along with both a free male and female skin. The ensemble, like most sets from the Gaslights Emporium, is very flexible, with the top part separated into a shirt, vest, and coat on the undershirt, shirt, and jacket layers. The ribbon tie is a prim accessory and the bottom of the coat is a prim skirt. The textures are somewhat dark (it is a black coat after all), but they’re not flat black. My only complaint is that the bottom of the jacket feels rather short. I had picked up one of the skins and originally planned to wear it, but decided against it after wearing the coat and seeing how short it was. Since the piece consists of multiple prims, its a bit harder to scale to size so I decided to go for a smaller shaped avatar. (more…)

New: Wearing the green @ Gaslights Emporium

shamrock_collection_full.jpgThe wearing of green has been associated with the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day since the 19th century, and the tradition is followed today not just on the Emerald Isle but around the world.  Vincente Shepherd’s Victorian steampunk stamp is clear on his new “Shamrock Collection,” just released at Gaslights Emporium.  In its entirety, the collection is a complete ensemble, including clothing and accessories, so if you have no fear of a suit that is very green indeed, you may be able to outfit yourself from head to toe in one quick stop in Port Babbage.

The St. Patrick’s Day Green Shamrock Suit includes wool jacket with flexi tails, wool trousers, simple white formal shirt, shamrock-pattern waistcoat, and prim bow tie.  The suit’s green is the bright, fresh color of raucous meadows in spring–no quiet forest glen or moss-covered stones here.  Although stylistically similar to some of Vincente’s other, more restrained attire for Victorian gentlemen, this suit is set apart by its vibrant color and the elaborate, almost baroque pattern of the cloth used for the waistcoat, both front and back. New: Festive Suit for the holidays @ Gaslights Emporium

festive_suit_green_full.jpgIf you’ve been searching for a new suit that’s just right for Christmas caroling, holiday parties and other celebratory gatherings, you may need look no further than the Festive Suit, newly released by Vincente Shepherd at Gaslights Emporium.  This is a richly textured, finely tailored suit with detailing that is festive indeed, as its name promises.  This is what Father Christmas would wear to parties, if he had any time during this of all seasons to hobnob with other smart gentlemen and ladies.

The suit includes trousers, jacket, flexi jacket bottom, black waistcoat, and prim white fur collar and lapel.  I’ve added a white Victorian shirt from another of Vincente’s suits, but any simple white or contrasting shirt will do.  The jacket is blessed with an eye-catching, slightly asymmetrical placket, close-fitting flexiprim tails, and elaborately detailed fur collar and lapels. Options, with Occasional Designer

Options4.JPGOne evening last summer, after several gimlets (as typifies these things), a friend and I got on the subject of uniformity of dress. “A suit and tie is conformity as its worst,” my friend declaimed. “Constricting, it hampers freedom of movement; mandated, it hampers freedom of expression; and bland, it hampers the freedom to be creative. You are a fool to let yourself be forced to wear them and a lemming to do so uncomplaining.”

My smile had far too many teeth: “You’re one to talk, scion of the IT department,” I observed archly. “Ill-fitting Gap khakis and a royal blue polo do not make you the hacker baron of the network closet, any more than your bowlers make you Dick Weber. Mind you, don’t get any pretzels in one of your dozen or so pleats.”

Men’s Corner: Gentleman’s wear

englishman_suit_closed_blue_tie.jpgWhen I was growing up, my mother always told me that there’s a difference between being a man and being a gentleman.  As with so many things my mother told me, I’ve learned over time that this is true.  I think it’s safe to say that this rule applies equally in Second Life.  What makes one a gentleman?  The term is usually associated today with a certain propriety and courtesy in one’s conduct, but historically also had connotations of belonging to a good family and perhaps even having the right connections.  While I can’t help you with your manners or breeding, I can suggest some clothing and accessories without which no gentleman should venture into polite society.  Feel free to take these necessarily specific recommendations and implement them more generally in your own gentlemanly pursuits.

Men’s Corner: Halloween 2007 Roundup

halloween2006.jpgI had a great time decorating for Halloween last year.  I think one of the appeals of Second Life is the opportunity to do things that can’t be done reasonably or maybe even at all in Real Life.  In addition to going a little crazy with the house and yard decorations, I also had, um, several different costumes for myself.  You may not feel the need to go quite that far, but surely you’ll need at least one.  Here are some ideas I’m playing with for this year, some new and some that have been around for a while.  I only wore one of these last year, though, so I’m not just recycling things that are already sitting in my inventory!  I’ve tried to include a mix of clothing costumes and avatars, although some costumes can be so elaborate that the line between often seems blurred.  These are just some personal favorites of mine, and we’re by no means done for the season–you’ll undoubtedly see at least a few more seasonally themed items in the next few weeks.  :D (more…)

Review: Gaslights Emporium by Vincente Shepherd

gentlemans_suit_claret_full.jpgThe New Babbage Victorian steampunk region came to my attention by way of the New Babbage build on this year’s Relay For Life track. It was while exploring in Babbage Square that I discovered Gaslights Emporium, a men’s clothing and accessories shop featuring designs by Vincente Shepherd. The shop itself is fairly new, and some items are new within the last week or two. Here you can find everything you need to outfit yourself as a proper Victorian gentleman, from clothing to accessories–and a few toys as well.

The Gentleman’s Suit (L$400) is available in your choice of Blue, Green, Black, Claret (shown), Brown and Charcoal. It includes jacket, trousers, shirt, waistcoat, flexi coat bottom and prim bowtie. Vincente is currently making these available on a “buy one, get one free” basis–details are available in the shop. (more…)
