Men’s Corner: Skins and hair

antonio_pale.jpgIn Second Life we have the opportunity to express ourselves, via our avatars, in ways that may not be easily accessible to us or even possible in real life.  Designer clothing may be daily wear for us in SL, while in real life it’s a luxury that may or may not be possible for us.  Changing our skins and hair, though, is a different story—neither quick nor easy in real life, but a matter of a few simple clicks in SL.  This issue’s theme is “The Body,” and in this column I want to share with you designs by a few of my favorite skin and hair designers–some new, some old favorites, some you might not have heard of, but I think all are doing great work.

One of my favorite skins in every aspect is “Antonio,” by Funk Schnook.  When checking out a skin, I find that I always look first at the face, and I love the way Antonio’s feature detailing (including all the facial hair choices, which are very well done) works on my avatar.  Two levels of muscle definition are available, and I remember Funk being a little surprised that he felt the skin worked well on my slim shape, as he had designed it with more “built” shapes in mind.  Here you see the less-defined in the Pale skin tone, with the Stubble with Soul Patch facial hair option.  L$1850 for a single skin, or L$4500 for a four-pack; demos available in the store.  Available in four tintable skin tones and a variety of facial hair and makeup options at FNKY! (FNKY Cake 136, 69, 24). (more…)

New: Shoes, gear @ FNKY!

fnky_delinquent.jpgball_cap_back.jpgIt seems like I turned my back on Funk Schnook for maybe five seconds or so and when I look back he has all this new stuff out at FNKY!  I honestly don’t know how he does it.  Clearly he’s some kind of mad creative genius, the kind that’s maybe just a little bit scary when you stand real close.

Funk’s new FNKY! Kicks casual shoes include five different sizes, so you should have no trouble finding one that fits you well, whether you’re a delicate flower of a Southern girl or the biggest and manliest of manly men.

New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: May 6 - 12, 2007

Following some constructive and pointed feedback from our valued readers the format of this segment as been slightly adjusted. You are really making me work for this. But I enjoy a good challenge. Items have been arranged in categories and descriptions have been made more concise (3 to 5 short sentences each). Due to time and resource constraints designer-created images have been used in the product highlights. If there are any further comments you may have on the changes please feel free to post.

Is it any wonder that this was also a week that was rife with male fashion content? We’ve got a fairly diverse round-up with amongst the categories in addition to two sales. And of course I felt obligated to write about the quality products I saw and/or tried on.

New : Bunch of new versions for “Style” Dress Shoes @ FNKY

Today, another episode of the adventures of Ben and his quest for male shoes in SL. This is absolutely not a joke! We poor men, so much in need of decent shoes, and with so little choice in world. It’s no secret that I harrass the shoe designers, always with the same question: “When will you release new male shoes?!!” I know, I know, I’m impossible when it comes to shoes!

Funk Schnook has been treated that way too, I’m ashamed to admit. I’m sure you already know his Prada-like shiny black shoes, so realistic and perfectly designed (see Zarithi Federko’s review on October 2006).

The “Style” shoes are just amazing: perfectly balanced, with sophisticated dtails (you can find leather IN the shoes, the sole is beautiful and shows a red insert, sign of a well known RL brand). Excellent textures give a totally “genuine leather” feeling.

Everybody loves these shoes. Everybody wished to have more colors. Some people thought it would be great if the shininess was a little less “show off.” (more…)

Posting on a Sunday again. I might have to make this a part of the usual ritual.

This week some counter culture hair and apparel made their way into the retail market, allowing avies to let down or muss up their hair, salvage stuff from the dirty clothes hamper, and adorn themselves in the non-traditional if they so choose. Not everyone wants to look as though they got lost on their way to a Club Monaco photo shoot. SL designers have been great lately in putting out products for residents who want to highlight their non-standard, unusual or just regular down-to-earth features. Aged skin, thinning hair, shapes with wider waistlines and a host of other items for ordinary people.

I’m feeling a little rant moment coming on. I promise it’ll be short. <start rant> Ours is a world where you can choose to be one of a bajillion different types of fantastical creatures - chibi fox, dragon, jogauni, phoenix, sphinx, etc. - but if you wanted to be a Filipino guy in a traditional barong tagalog or a Polynesian guy in a comfortable lavalava you would be faced with severely limited choices. Am I the only one that thinks that’s a little odd?</end rant>

I look forward to the coming weeks and months where we continue to recognize and reflect our diversity in-world. I hope you do too.

0_header_twimf.gifDue to the ton of stuff I had to do all through this week I didn’t really get time to publish this segment yesterday in the regular Saturday slot. If anyone noticed I hope all is forgiven. Maybe the quality of the products seen within will help in melting away any animosity being harbored.

Everything happens for a reason and, from my point-of-view, the delay gives me an opportunity to support my Relay for Life team by announcing the recent release of Last Call’s silent auction item - a one-of-a kind gown to benefit cancer research. Additionally, I’ll give you the rundown on other limited editions designed by team members and supporters of the Shopaholics.

New: Antonio skins @ FNKY! [2]

antonio_pale_babyface_close.jpgCat can be a tough act to follow.  When a few days ago he showed me some pictures from the sophisticated photo shoot for his review of the new “Antonio” skins from designer Funk Schnook of FNKY!, I thought, “Hmm, these are good.  In fact, they’re so good…that I kind of hate him…just a little…just for a minute.”  Because this is one of those items that neither of us would gracefully concede to the other for review coverage.  Fortunately, we play well together.  My animosity was short-lived, I got over it quickly, I’ve moved on–and I don’t think he even noticed.  ;)

Funk’s new “Antonio” skins comes in three base tones: Pale, Medium, and Tan.  The skin tone can also be adjusted across a wide range via the Appearance sliders.  As Funk told me, you can get a fairly light color even wearing the Medium tone skin.  I am wearing the Pale skin tone in all accompanying pictures, with the color slider set to 25 (the “out of the box” setting is 50, the midpoint).  In this first picture you see the “Baby Face” (clean shaven) facial hair option.  Personally and quite subjectively, I think this might be the most attractive face any skin has ever given my avatar. New: Antonio skins @ FNKY! [1]

fnky_snapshot_008.jpgIf you’ve never heard of or owned any product created by Funk Schnook, creator of FNKY!, please crawl back under your rock and continue to live in your hollow little world bereft of urbanity. I’m certain many friends and loyal customers may have begged the well-rounded designer to expand his brand to include skins. To this reviewer, this transition into skin creation was only natural. It was only a matter of time, really. Funk has won over consumer audiences with his pragmatic, conscientious and polished aesthetic treatments which exude the most ravenous sense of savoir-faire.

FNKY!’s debut skin line serves to bolster quality male skin selections in a market where discerning men tend to be hard-pressed to find variety in quality product. (more…)

New: Dress Shoes @ FNKY!

For all you other male fashion aficionados out there, if you are anything like me you’re always on the lookout for a good pair of shoes. Good men’s shoes are hard to come by in SL; we’ve got Fallingwater Cellardoor at Shiny Things and her gorgeous creations (which I am never without). However when it came to a dress shoe to go with a suit for a nice evening out, I’ve been hard pressed to find something I like.

I appreciate how difficult it is to hide prim lines on a creation like a shoe; to create a delicious creation with flow and sleekness is an art beyond many. However, no matter how hard it is, I am just as hard to satisfy. The more sleek and complete looking the happier I am.Shoes1_002.jpg

Just within the last few days, I finally found something that made me happy, very happy. I first stumbled across these shoes by FNKY! designer, Funk Schnook, on SLExchange. The pictures I saw there, honestly looked to good to be true, holding my breath I hurried in game to see for myself. What I found was awesome to behold, a beautiful creation by FNKY!(Fantasy City: 55, 111, 26)

Shoes1_001.jpgWhen I purchased them I found that he had also thought of function, not just design. The shoes come with three different sizes for all you difficult to fit men. He also included some simple socks just to make your life easier. At 500$L they are a little on the expensive side, but in my humble opinion, worth it.

Well, I have enjoyed my new purchase for the past few days; looking spiffy in my formal wear, and hope that this review lets you all into my little secret.
