“If only you could see what I have seen with your eyes.” — Roy Batty
I’ve had this idea kicking around in my head for some time now, but I was never really sure how to make it work or even if I could pull it off, close-up photography of avatar details being the challenge that it is. But it kept nagging at me, and I kept worrying it over, and finally I thought, “Well, maybe.” So here we are. Of course there’s also the question of how useful it will be to you, The Reader. You’ll have to be the judge of that.
Cliché: The eyes are windows to the soul. (Do SL avatars have souls? Maybe on the other side of the keyboard. That’s probably a discussion for another time.) Truth, subjective though it may be: The eyes are, or at least are perceived as, the outward expression of something inner, and definitely affect our perception of others. These are some of the eye designs that have become my favorites over time. Any one of these designers has more eyes than I can feature here, some of them vastly so. This brief overview is intended to do no more than give you a closer look at some of my personal favorites. (more…)

In Second Life we have the opportunity to express ourselves, via our avatars, in ways that may not be easily accessible to us or even possible in real life. Designer clothing may be daily wear for us in SL, while in real life it’s a luxury that may or may not be possible for us. Changing our skins and hair, though, is a different story—neither quick nor easy in real life, but a matter of a few simple clicks in SL. This issue’s theme is “The Body,” and in this column I want to share with you designs by a few of my favorite skin and hair designers–some new, some old favorites, some you might not have heard of, but I think all are doing great work.
One of my favorite skins in every aspect is “Antonio,” by Funk Schnook. When checking out a skin, I find that I always look first at the face, and I love the way Antonio’s feature detailing (including all the facial hair choices, which are very well done) works on my avatar. Two levels of muscle definition are available, and I remember Funk being a little surprised that he felt the skin worked well on my slim shape, as he had designed it with more “built” shapes in mind. Here you see the less-defined in the Pale skin tone, with the Stubble with Soul Patch facial hair option. L$1850 for a single skin, or L$4500 for a four-pack; demos available in the store. Available in four tintable skin tones and a variety of facial hair and makeup options at FNKY! (FNKY Cake 136, 69, 24). (more…)

When I arrived at Posy Trudeau’s newly built, in fact at the time still-in-progress shop “Flesh Peddlers,” she was lounging before a roaring fire on a chaise covered in velvet upholstery and dressed as if to double for Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, the Tomb Raider herself. When I complimented her on her ensemble—it seemed the gentlemanly thing to do—she laughed and said, “It’s all in my ‘to organize’ folder.” Posy and I have sympathized and empathized with each other in the past over our respective inventory management issues, so I understood immediately and completely. We’re not always dressed to impress; often we’re just wearing whatever’s handy. Posy manages to pull this off quite well, whereas I tend to look like I’m in some limbo state between two distinctly different outfits. “Flesh Peddlers” is a new joint venture of Posy and Vasean Talamasca. Posy has been working for the past few months on her new “Jack” and “Jill” male and female skins and will be creating some female shapes as well, while Vasean has designed the male shapes. Unfortunately Vasean and I weren’t able to meet before he left on a holiday trip, but we plan to get together for a chat once he’s back home. (more…)
