Freebies from Rich People Stores

Rich Folk Outfit 1Remember me? For the few of you who do.. no I didn’t die. I’ve just been very busy with RL and then “relaxed” a bit with a week of summer vacation. My vacation isn’t quite over yet, but I felt that I had to cover some freebies that might disappear soon. My laptop’s onboard graphics aren’t good enough SL so I snuck onto a friend’s machine to install SL to snap a few pics for this post. Thus, this post is brought to you by my friend with no desktop password :P

Anyway, a long time ago I said that I couldn’t buy fancy clothes cuz I’m poor. Well, now a good number of those rich stores have freebies all in one spot: KMADD Enterprise. KMADD had a lot of gifts out from their opening, which disappeared a lil while back, before I could cover them (I hadn’t started blogging when they disappeared). Its not all bad though, because they replaced them with different gifts from a handful of the KMADD stores, including Tonic, Tango NY, Endeavor, Indigo, Redgrave, Mechanism, Mhaijik Things, SF Design, and of course MADesigns. New: Daring jackets and coats @ Civvies

reptile_jacket_brown.jpgIn this era of high-tech synthetic microfiber technology, there’s something raw, primitive, even atavistic about the idea of clothing ourselves in animal skins.  Some cultures have held the belief that one could take on characteristics of an animal by wearings its skin–strength, bravery, speed, endurance.  In SL, you can test out this theory free of guilt, as no actual animals are involved in the creation of “animal-skin” designs.

Posy Trudeau’s new Reptile Jackets bring with them some of that “red in tooth and claw” aura, albeit in a more dashing and stylistic approach than we might expect from prehistory.  Hmm, I wonder if that guy in the “Ten Gazillion B.C.” movie wears any snakeskin clothing?  From the trailer, it seems like the emphasis is on the traditional tanned-skins-and-fur look.  No matter what, he isn’t going to look as good as this. Isn’t It Romantic? Part 3 - Valentine’s Day tees @ Civvies

vday_heart_n_skull.jpgWe’re getting close to the 14th, so this may be the last Valentine’s Day stuff I’m going to mention here, but no promises.  They’re simple pleasures this time, these long-sleeved tees by Posy Trudeau–nothing elaborate or over-the-top, just what’s needed.  The artwork is themed for V-Day, yet still a bit grungy and rough around the edges…kind of a nice change for those who might find themselves tiring of Cupids and flowers.

This design on grey is called Heart-n-Skull.  The heart is mostly black, with only a sliver of traditional romantic red.  The skull feels old and chalky, and a scattering of small crosses seem to flutter about.  The shirts have hemmed collar and cuffs, and the wrinkles in the fabric feel natural but don’t overwhelm the artwork. Men’s Corner: Isn’t It Romantic?

charlatan_coat_white_full.jpgWhenever I heard the word “romantic” I am immediately reminded of a scene in the movie “Moonstruck.” You know the scene—where Raymond Capomaggi, still madly in love with his wife Rita after many years together and apparently all but undone by the lovers’ moon that seems to be influencing everyone in sight, sings aloud a snippet of Rogers and Hart’s “Isn’t It Romantic?” Apparently, he was a tiger last night. ;)

One thing we can take away from this delightful moment is that romance is not the exclusive province of the young and beautiful—anyone can be romantic. Maybe this is a bit of a stretch, but I think this also suggests that dressing romantically doesn’t just mean lipstick-kissed boxer briefs (not that there’s anything wrong with that)—it can be anything that represents an effort to connect to your significant other and make something special happen for both of you. New: Leather gear @ Civvies

iron_cross_coat_full.jpgiron_cross_coat_detail1.jpgThose of you who have been following along for a while know that I’m a whore for long coats.  It is arguably both a gift and a curse.  Fortunately, the offerings of a variety of talented SL designers have made it possible for me to feel good about my addiction, if not overcome it.  The new “Iron Cross” Long Coat (L$500) at Civvies is something of a cousin to Posy’s earlier Road Agent Coat, although with different coloring and finishing details. New: Steampunk gear @ Civvies

steampunk_gear_full.jpgIf you haven’t yet visited designer Posy Trudeau’s airship-themed shopping collaboration, Plunder, you’re missing out.  Suspended high above Second Life by lighter-than-air ships, Plunder is an oasis of wood and metal, shopping and relaxation.  In addition to Posy’s own shop Civvies, Zabitan Assia’s FORM, Dragontat Zagato’s Desert Moon Clothiers and others, you’ll find the Cloudbuster Cantina, where you can take a break and quench your thirst.  When Posy was telling me about her new steampunk designs, she mentioned that she had discovered steampunk while researching airship designs for the Plunder build.  Fascinated and creatively challenged, she’s taken that discovery and with it run headlong into that rich alternate Victorian era to create her new collection of steampunk gear: the Steampunk Coat, Steampunk Hat and Steampunk Boots you see me wearing here. Freebie Independence Day tank @ Civvies

independence_day_tank.jpgIf you’re looking for the perfect casual attire for your Independence Day celebration in the U.S., Posy Trudeau has got you hooked up.  Her new Independence Day tank features none-too-clean fabric textures (hey, it’s gonna be hot, you’re bound to get kinda sweaty, everyone will understand) and a simple Stars and Stripes graphic on the chest.  The tank is provided on the jacket, shirt and undershirt layers (with an underwear-layer extension for low-rise pants or shorts) for tucked or untucked wear and ease of layering with other shirts and jackets.

Did I mention that Posy’s giving this one away?  Yup, it’s a freebie, so grab ‘em before she changes her mind!  Pick yours up exclusively at the Civvies location at Plunder (Maggiore 127, 128, 601).

New: Bad Boy Scout boots & War-Torn Gear @ [CIVVIES] Wearables

civvies_snapshot_003.jpgOn my honor, I will do my best:
To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law
To help other people at all times
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight

Pfft.

When the other boys were concerned with outdoor activities that would develop teamwork and leadership skills while building self-confidence the Bad Boy Scout was only interested in learning to set bigger, more glorious fires, torturing small animals and fooling around with the girl campers on the other side of the lake. His overzealous parents enrolled him in the character-building organization to set him on a path to Harvard or Yale, instead, he emerges as a seasoned firearms expert and gunsmith, knife thrower and arsenist. Living contrary to the image of the wimpy outdoorsy nerd he steps outside of Scout Law and throws his oath, like caution, to the wind.

To compliment the rascal footwear which was made available in early June, Posy Trudeau has issued her War-Torn shirts this week. Both the boots and shirts are available in female versions in-store. (more…)

Auction to benefit SLRFL - Civvies

civvies_auction.jpgOur second menswear auction to benefit  SLRFL features the following selection of designs by Posy Trudeau of Civvies: Road Agent Coat in black; Worn-In Workboots; Boxers in six colors; Henleys in three colors; and Uberschmutzy Jeans.  With all this stuff, you can put together a complete outfit (or two), deck yourself out in serious style, and help to kick cancer’s ass while you’re doing it!  All items are transferable, so you can give them away as gifts.  This auction will end at approximately 7:00pm SLT on Saturday, 23 June.  Bid early, bid often!  ;)

Visit the vintage diner-themed Shopaholics For A Cause build (Motorati 205, 133, 23) by Aradia Dielli and Lucian Overlord to check out and bid on the current auction (look for the BidBox toward the front of the diner, near the counter) as well as other men’s and women’s items available for a donation directly to SLRFL!  Details regarding the items included in each auction will be posted on this blog and will also be automatically delivered to you as a notecard at the auction site, so you’ll know exactly what you’re bidding for.  Be sure to step close to the BidBox, so your presence can be detected and the notecard delivered.  Don’t forget to take a look at the outside gas-pump vendors, too–there’s some stuff for guys out there.

This series of benefit auctions will run through the months of June and July, wrapping up before the final Relay event on Saturday, July 28.

New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: May 13 - 19, 2007

0_header_twimf.gif
I’ll keep this short and sweet. This week marked the appearance of some really fun, satirical and all around distinguished articles on the men’s fashion scene. Being a joker-at-heart, as soon as I saw Gadget Gobo and Caroline Apollo’s comical devices I ran down to their stores to take a peek for myself - laughing all the way. Sometimes we all need a little ludicrously funny distraction for our wardrobes. As always designers for all categories of items put out primo content whether you seek the ludicrous or the distinguished that we just can’t help but share with the masses.

While chasing answers to a reader inquiry I had the great fortune to stumble across a skin which may be something worth investigating for those looking for a non-athletic touch.

Dive in and see if there’s something within that suits your tastes.

New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: April 22-28, 2007

0_header_twimf.gif
Posting on a Sunday again. I might have to make this a part of the usual ritual.

This week some counter culture hair and apparel made their way into the retail market, allowing avies to let down or muss up their hair, salvage stuff from the dirty clothes hamper, and adorn themselves in the non-traditional if they so choose. Not everyone wants to look as though they got lost on their way to a Club Monaco photo shoot. SL designers have been great lately in putting out products for residents who want to highlight their non-standard, unusual or just regular down-to-earth features. Aged skin, thinning hair, shapes with wider waistlines and a host of other items for ordinary people.

I’m feeling a little rant moment coming on. I promise it’ll be short. <start rant> Ours is a world where you can choose to be one of a bajillion different types of fantastical creatures - chibi fox, dragon, jogauni, phoenix, sphinx, etc. - but if you wanted to be a Filipino guy in a traditional barong tagalog or a Polynesian guy in a comfortable lavalava you would be faced with severely limited choices. Am I the only one that thinks that’s a little odd?</end rant>

I look forward to the coming weeks and months where we continue to recognize and reflect our diversity in-world. I hope you do too.

New: Road Agent Coats @ Civvies

road_agent_brown_full.jpgbrotherhood_of_the_wolf_dvd.jpgI was chatting a few days ago with Posy Trudeau about her new Road Agent Coats, which have such a striking and interesting look that I had to ask where she got her inspiration.  She responded, “Partly from the movie ‘Brotherhood of the Wolf.’”  That was all it took–as soon as she said the words, I remembered the unique collar of the heavy leather coats worn by characters in that interesting (if imperfect) film.  I raved about what a great stylistic influence this was, and we went on to talk about what we liked and disliked about that film, the availability of the director’s cut on DVD, classics from the Shaw Brothers, movies we’ve seen (”Zodiac”) and would like to see (”The Host”), and “The X-Files.”  Yeah, this is what I love about Second Life.  :D (more…)

New: Russian hat + belts @ Civvies Wearables

leather_hat_belt_outfit.jpgI was jazzed the other day to see that Posy Trudeau has put out some awesome new accessories at Civvies Wearables.  One of my favorite new shops, Civvies features a relatively small but growing line of clothing with a distinct vintage bent, beautiful new/old design and texturing, and a great sense of style and whimsy.  Posy’s new Warm & Woolly Leather Hats are a great interpretation of the Russian shapka or ushanka style hat in brown leather with sheepskin trim and a red Soviet star detail.  These are perfect for those long, long winter nights of the far north, when it seems like the sun will never rise again and the soul falls to its lowest ebb.  Your spirits may be frozen, but your ears will be toasty and warm.  Everyone wins with these, too, since their unisex styling makes them perfect for the girls as well as the guys.  The Warm and Woolly Leather Hats come in a set that includes hats with and without attached hair. Grand Opening @ Civvies Wearables

civvies_storefront.jpgPosy Trudeau has been busy.  Yes, that Posy Trudeau, she of Miau Haus fame.  She has embarked on a new (ad)venture and just opened Civvies Wearables, her new clothing shop for men and women.  As the very name suggests, the emphasis here is on wearability, and in fact many of these items have clearly been worn before.  But, as Posy says, “…every rip, hole and stain tells a story.”  The design of the shop carries out this theme  as well, with its construction and furnishings giving the impession of having been knocked together from scavenged construction materials and other found items.
