New: Mallory Shirts @ Casa Del Shai

WavesDay.jpgOK, let’s just pretend that I’ve written and you’ve read a couple of paragraphs of playful banter about my being on holiday and the sun and sand on the beach. I’m too eager to cut to the chase: Look at the way the light plays on the bunched cloth! No one can do this like Shai Delacroix. (As usual, click the picture to see the full-size image.)

Other designers’ clothes have well-drawn, even artistic, wrinkles; only Casa del Shai’s clothes have laugh lines. (more…)

Men’s Corner: Best Of

I was in a barren and empty sim, the hour was late and it was dark (I had forced midnight) when a mysterious message urgently demanded my attention. “Your mission, should you choose to accept it: for the next issue of Second Style, highlight some of the best individual designs in SL fashion of the last twelve months. This IM will self-destruct in ten seconds. Nine. Eight….”

I logged out quickly, but not before triggering a sly smile ( }:-> ). I knew that this assignment would challenge me like no other, and I would have to rely on all my skills and training. How to select just a handful of items from the many released over the past year? It seemed…impossible. ;)

Hopefully my superiors will agree that I have succeeded. All of these creations epitomize the best of what SL design has to offer. In chronological order by month of release: (more…)

New: Hefner robe and PJs @ Casa Del Shai

hefner_robe_navy.jpgIt’s imposible for me to think of Hugh Hefner any more without being reminded of Johnny Drama getting himself thrown out of the Playboy Mansion.  It’s a priceless moment of television history.  Why are the most breathlessly hysterical moments in “Entourage” almost always the result of something Johnny did that was incredibly, moronically stupid?  (Brooke Shields:  “He.  Is.  Hard.”  I rest my case.)  Johnny gives Lucy Ricardo a run for her money.

When I saw what a sincere tribute Shai’s new Hefner Robe and Pajama sets are to Hef himself, I immediately made a quick call to inquire about a photo shoot in The Grotto.  Alas–in addition to being a very busy man, he’s notoriously flaky about getting back to people, at least in my experience.  I’m sure it was just a problem with timing.  He’ll almost certainly call me back, full of apologies, the instant I publish this–my life tends to work like that.  Rest assured that Shai’s luxurious loungewear will work its magic in any intimate setting, including your own private boudoir. Jeans: The Right Fit

GRIPP_Jeans___Core_Dirty.jpgI have hinted in previous posts, that for me, it is difficult to find the perfect pair of jeans in Second Life. I am reminded of the times I have gone shopping with my RL wife and she searches through every store in the mall to be defeated in the end. At the end of the day the complaints and tears seem endless. Either the pockets fit funny, they aren’t the right “style” or they make her butt look fat. Until I became Second Life fashion obsessed, I never understood why or what caused her such grief. “Just grab the pair that fits and find your way back to the car.” But it was never that easy. And, for some reason I think God is teaching me a lesson for not showing her patience. In RL I wear a 34-32. In Second Life it takes a lot more effort to find the right fit. Hopefully I can save you time and energy. I will review seven designers and I guarantee that at each location there is a pair you’ll enjoy.

Men’s Corner: Isn’t It Romantic?

charlatan_coat_white_full.jpgWhenever I heard the word “romantic” I am immediately reminded of a scene in the movie “Moonstruck.” You know the scene—where Raymond Capomaggi, still madly in love with his wife Rita after many years together and apparently all but undone by the lovers’ moon that seems to be influencing everyone in sight, sings aloud a snippet of Rogers and Hart’s “Isn’t It Romantic?” Apparently, he was a tiger last night. ;)

One thing we can take away from this delightful moment is that romance is not the exclusive province of the young and beautiful—anyone can be romantic. Maybe this is a bit of a stretch, but I think this also suggests that dressing romantically doesn’t just mean lipstick-kissed boxer briefs (not that there’s anything wrong with that)—it can be anything that represents an effort to connect to your significant other and make something special happen for both of you. New: Newsboy @ Casa Del Shai

newsboy_blue.jpgThe first thing I want you to know is that I have manfully resisted the temptation to shout, “Extra, extra, read all about it!”  Except now I’ve gone and said it anyway.  My apologies; apparently you’re just going to have to live with me.  The second thing I want you to know is that I can’t begin to imagine where Shai gets her ideas and inspirations for her new clothing designs.  In this case, one hopes it wasn’t from repeated rentals of “Newsies,” and if it was, one hopes further that this is because she’s got a thing for musicals, or Christian Bale, or whatever, and not because of its status as a modern classic, because it’s…kind of not.  (Flawed as it is, I think “Swing Kids” is arguably somewhat better.  Yes, I see a lot of crap movies.)  Shai’s new Newsboy Outfits defy easy categorization and immediate understanding of the Why behind the What.  This in no way keeps them from being a lot of fun. New Year’s Eve formalwear

classic_tux_full.jpgFor my final post of 2007, I thought I’d make just a few suggestions for possible New Year’s Eve party attire.  It seemed to me that formalwear was called for, so here are just a few of my favorites, some recent, that haven’t been featured here before.

shawl_collar_tux.jpgIf you’re looking for a beautifully designed traditional tuxedo, consider the variety of styles by designer edo Tone.  The simple, classic style at right (L$400) has clean lines, a notched silk collar, and silk-edged pockets.  The pants are elegantly textured, with a cleanly defined crease.  The shawl collar tux at left (L$500) is done with the same attention to detail.  Also available are a “High Grade” tux (L$600), with jacket textured in deep charcoal rather than inky black, and for variety a grey tux (also L$600).  Note that the prices given here are for the tuxedo jacket and pants only; all tuxedo styles are also available in “coordinated sets” with wing collar shirts, vests, cummerbunds, and ties in various colors and styles.  These accessory items are also available individually, so you can mix and match or expand your wardrobe with specific items to your personal taste. Men’s Corner: Gentleman’s wear

englishman_suit_closed_blue_tie.jpgWhen I was growing up, my mother always told me that there’s a difference between being a man and being a gentleman.  As with so many things my mother told me, I’ve learned over time that this is true.  I think it’s safe to say that this rule applies equally in Second Life.  What makes one a gentleman?  The term is usually associated today with a certain propriety and courtesy in one’s conduct, but historically also had connotations of belonging to a good family and perhaps even having the right connections.  While I can’t help you with your manners or breeding, I can suggest some clothing and accessories without which no gentleman should venture into polite society.  Feel free to take these necessarily specific recommendations and implement them more generally in your own gentlemanly pursuits.

New: Greek Boys on holiday @ Casa Del Shai

greek_boy_navy_jacket.jpgI happened to bump into Shai outside her shop the other night (a coincidence, I swear, although I know she thinks I’m her personal stalker).  It had been ages since we had done more than exchange an IM or two and it was great to catch up with her.  When I mentioned her new Greek Boy outfits she was excited and confided that these feel to her like something of a “return to my roots.”  I couldn’t agree more–the richness of the fabric textures and the jewel-like colors take me back to Shai’s Heath Jackets, Irish Sweaters and Flaunt Jeans from last fall.  This feels like perfect timing to me as summer winds down and the boys head back to school.  How about one last Mediterranean blow-out before classes start up?  I’m thinking Mykonos. New: Southern Comfort Suit @ Casa Del Shai

southern_comfort_chocolate_full.jpgShai Delacroix hits close to this boy’s heart with her new Southern Comfort Suit.  Although I’m not a New Orleans native, I kind of married into the city and now I try to get there for several days at least twice a year.  Shai’s new suit epitomizes the casual elegance of Southern summer living–it’s perfect whether you’re wandering the French Quarter shops and galleries, listening to the music drifting through Jackson Square, or sipping Sazeracs and Pimm’s Cups with friends at Napoleon House.  If you’re lucky it might be all three in lazy succession on a hot summer afternoon, with a break somewhere in the middle for an elegant lunch in the garden courtyard at Bayona, or maybe just a roast beef poor-boy at Johnny’s.  Later on you’ll be heading out to hear some live music–who’s at Preservation Hall tonight?–but for now, it’s all about relaxation. Newish: Y B Formal? Suits by Shai, Vindi blur the line

Luna.jpgSeveral years ago, I’d had a spate of formal occasions that put me in the market for a tuxedo. Being a bit of a classicist, I began making the rounds asking for something in black. But one salesman, a solidly-built man who reminded me of no one so much as the banker from the “Chance” and “Community Chest” cards in Monopoly, filled me in on a fact about formalwear: black just doesn’t look black enough. If you want a tuxedo that *really* looks black, he informed me, you purchase a dark blue tuxedo. The darkest blues are dark enough to be seen as black, but have a richness, a depth, that “normal” black just doesn’t seem to have.

Later, a graphic designer of my acquaintance agreed: for really good blacks, she puts 100% into the K, but she also slips 20-25 points into C, M and Y as well.

Relay For Life 2007

relay_final_event.jpgThis Saturday, July 28, marks the conclusion of SL Relay For Life 2007!  The final event will be a round-the-clock walkathon held on specially designated areas of the grid, designed and built up by RFL teams from all over.  You are invited to visit the Relay sims this weekend to show your support for those who are living with cancer as well as those who are working toward a cure.  A variety of events are scheduled, from the opening ceremony at 2pm SLT on Saturday, to themed laps around the Relay track throughout the day and night, to fireworks displays across 32 sims, to the formal closing ceremony.  The Shopaholics team’s Gypsy carnival-themed build is at RelayForLife28 80, 81, 25, so click to TP directly and look around for the big tent!  In the Credit Where Credit Is Due Department, the beautiful build is by the fabulous CJ Carnot.  Others I’ve seen at work are Shai Delacroix, Grazia Horwitz, Nicky Ree and Tigerlily Koi–troublemakers, every one of them.  I hope I haven’t left anyone out!  :D (more…)

New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: June 24 - 30, 2007

0_header_twimf.gif
Due to a massive power outage in my building I was unable to access the internet. After going through the five stages of grieving (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance) I decided not to stare at my blank computer screen and went out to enjoy the Canada Day atmosphere and celebrations across the city. Canadians and Americans, please enjoy your festivities.

And now on to fashion. As always, if you have your ear to the ground and stumble across a really great designer please send me an IM. Please note that for the month of July I’m taking a break from this weekly column.

casadelshai_snapshot_006.jpgCasa Del Shai. A follow up to the suave elegance of last week’s Barong Tagalogs with a westernized twist in the Amorsolo and Luna suits. The traditional Filipino shirts have been paired with a suit jacket that has been embroidered/screen printed on the back panel and a crisp pair of matching slacks. The ensemble sells @ 600L and can be purchased in Deco (112, 150, 30).

sale_indie_snapshot_001.jpgSale @ Indie. Don’t forget to check out Indie Rainbow’s stores in Louise and Sede di Marte before July 5th and take advantage of the liquidation sale on his hand drawn goodies for men and women. Once the sale is over his current collection will be retired.

vrdesigns_snapshot_006.jpgVR Phlux. Another addition to the swing collection. “Harris” is a sharp tweed suit with shirt and tie, vest with pocket watch detail layer, jacket layer and belted “Hollywood” slacks. The suit sells for 300L at phlux (169, 163, 35).

New: Barong Tagalog collection @ Casa Del Shai

barong_ebony_mandarin_close1.jpgDesigner Shai Delacroix of Casa Del Shai recently released a collection of designs in celebration of Filipino tradition and heritage.  For the ladies, Shai has created stunning dresses in a variety of colors and styles.  For us men, her new Barong Tagalog collection redefines men’s formalwear and provides a beautiful summer alternative to the classic tuxedo.  The barong Tagalog (literally, “Tagalog dress”) is an embroidered garment usually made of piña cloth or jusi fabric and commonly worn as wedding and formal attire.  Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay often wore a barong to both personal and state events, including his presidential inauguration, thus bringing it to greater popularity.  In 1975 the barong, by decree from President Ferdinand Marcos, was made the national costume.  And there’s your fashion history lesson for the day.  ;) (more…)

New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: June 17 - 23, 2007

0_header_twimf.gif

For those who have been hiding under a rock SL turns 4 years old this week. During all of our careers there have been many ups and downs - n’est-ce pas? - as we all go through our own growing pains in this surreal virtual space.

Within this anniversary week so much is in development or has occurred in the realm of culture relating to the Men’s Second Style blog as well as resident lifestyle in general.

contest_faceofasia07.jpgFace of Asia Model Competition. Anyone who can coax those sliders in appearance mode to create a beautiful or handsome Asian shape is encouraged to enter this cultural modeling contest brought to us by the Asian Designers Summit. Contest guidelines can be found at the Women’s Second Style blog or by visiting the Men’s Second Style office, Casa Del Shai, Earthtones Boutique, Muse or Nicky Ree’s Boutique in-world. Face of Asia is open to all residents. Round 1 submissions close June 27, 2007 at midnight SLT.

freebies_sl4b_nora.jpgNora Body Skins by Sezmra Svarog. Since she teased audiences in mid-April with a sneak peak of her new generation of male skins in development I have been eagerly awaiting the release of her skins. This week, Sezmra displayed a more detailed vision of her skins - each appealing to a different segment of skin consumers: the toned “Hunter” and the svelte “David”. Nora is also offering up some SL4B freebies @ her shop and promises a rehaul of her store and sim.

Second Love Magazine. Tya Fallingbridge and Daphne Molinari announce this week the launch of Second Love Magazine on July 1, 2007. Second Love will be monthly PG publication covering a variety of issues affecting straight and gay residents whether in single, coupled or friendship relationships. The magazine will be accessible in-world and online. The launch party is set for July, 1st @ 7 P.M. SLT game time at Schmooze, Pixel Dreams (12, 146, 21).

As a reminder, if you are aware of any new designers or products that you discover during the week and would like to see included in this segment please look me up and IM me in-world.

New: Poco @ Casa del Shai

casadelshai_snapshot_002.jpgShai guys have much to be happy about. As those of us whove been battered by the cold weather months prepare for the welcoming warmth of balmy temperatures and late sunsets hued in passionate reds, mid-April marks the beginning of Casa Del Shais Summer 2007 collection. Shai has let loose the first in a series of pieces that seem to hang weightlessly, calling attention to the need for ease-of-wear in the hotter months. A definite move on her part in influencing Vertumnus to fan the flames and usher in the summer heat.

A little means a lot with a new release for the boys. “Poco” (meaning small in Spanish) is a super suave casual set with dress shirt, ribbed tank and blue denims. Roll up your sleeves in one of five striped shirts in your choice of tonal azures, leaf greens, olives, plums or purples. The delectable Delacroix has turned out another chic and classic combo for her male following.

New: Vice Suits @ Casa Del Shai

vice_steel_blue_full_front.jpgCue the Jan Hammer theme music here, just for a period-appropriate mental accompaniment. You know what I mean–that driving, synth-heavy,moody tuneage that came to define movies and TV of theEighties in ways both good (”Blade Runner”) and bad (pretty much everything else). The “Miami Vice” theme got way too much airplay, so I know you know it.Hey, you probably had the soundtrack album. On LP vinyl. (Here’s a handy reference linkfor all you kids out there who have no idea what I’m talking about.) All right, now that the mood has been set, let’s get down to business. Hot on the heels of her recent single-handed Sixties discorevivaland side trip to Seventies Vegas, Shai Delacroix has stepped up one more decade to the Eighties to give us her own personal take on Crockett and Tubbs…the Vice Suit. She hinted about these to me a while back, then promptly went on vacation, and I’ve been dying ever since. Curse you, Shai! ;) (more…)

Commit Adultery @ Casa Del Shai

adulterer_suit_full.jpgOkay, so you got me–this suit isn’t exactly brand new. Here’s the thing: I had chosen it for inclusion in my “Men’s Corner” column in the Valentine’s Day issue of Second Style magazine (downloadIssue #7here) and didn’t want to beat the issue to the punch. Although Second Style is an electronic publication, there are still content, layout and other press deadlines and timelinesto deal with, all kinds of things I don’t understand, and its production is far more complicated than my little blog posts…ah, technology. Wasn’t it Egon Spengler who said, “Print is dead”? Nearly 25 years later, and he’s nearly right. But I wanted to feature the suit here, too. The solution? As with so many things in life, it’s all about the timing. That issue should be on newsstands any minute now, so here’s a little more coverage of this great suit. Just in time for Valentine’s Day,this is the perfect way to show your love and constancy…or lack thereof. In this bad boy, you look like a bad boy, a little rumpled but no worse for the wear. ;) (more…)

New: Disco glam shirts @ Casa Del Shai

disco_shirt_turquoise.jpgShai Delacroix continues her glitterball glitz-blitz down Memory Lane with these fab new Disco Shirts for men. (She has a whole line of Solid Gold gear for women, too!) I expect to be no less than completely wowed by Shai’s designs, but these shirts are impossibly, weepingly beautiful. I missed the Disco Era–I was a little too young, in fact a mere babe, thanks for asking–but Shai’s retrodisco designs seem to bring it all back, heightened and romanticized to be sure, but it all feels right somehow. The cloth of these shirts has an elaborate, almost baroque pattern that by rights ought tobe in conflict with the silky nylon/poly sheen of the fabric, but here they meet and blend harmoniously. Design = Art + Magic. Here you see the Disco Shirt in Turquoise. Note how details like the point collar, deep vee neck, and buttons are kept subtle and restrained so the fabric of the shirt can really stand out and shine–all inperfect balance. (more…)

New: High Roller Suits @ Casa Del Shai

high_roller_green_front_black.jpgHow do I love thee, Shai? Let me count the ways. As if your Travolta Suit’s disco-fever gorgeosity were somehow, impossibly not enough, now you have blessed us with the over-the-top kitschglam of your new High Roller Suit! My heart sings with gladness.

I’ve actually been sitting on these for some time as Shai gleefully sprang them on me while I was still ogling the Travolta Suit for the first time (I believe my exact words were “OMG is that cloth texture doubleknit polyester?!?”) It was a terrible and unfair distraction as after all these suits are shiny. It’s no wonder I couldn’t look away. Shai, you evil genius!

You will be crazy in love with the deepV-neck black shirt, the way its spread collar falls over the double-wide shiny (natch) satin lapels, and the beltless pants that are absolute perfection. Here I’m wearing the jacket in green with the pants in black, completing the outfit with Fallingwater Cellardoor’s fab “City Walk” dress shoes. I simply cannot be stopped! But you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. (more…)

travolta_suit_jacket.jpgIf you thought you saw Tony Manero on the dance floor on New Year’s Eve, your eyes did not deceive you…but it was probably just me in Shai Delacroix’s new Travolta Suit, now available at Casa Del Shai. The Seventies are back in full force, but this suit isn’t a novelty or a joke–it takes its inspiration seriously and as a result is a great piece of design work on its own merits. I’ve heard from many designers that white isn’t easy to do well in SL, and Shai confirmed that the work on this one made her crazy for a while. But she persevered and you see the result before you. New: Cardigans @ Casa Del Shai

prussian_blue.jpgYou know by now that I pretty much think Shai Delacroix can do no wrong. If she builds it, I will come. Once again she justifies my blindfaith in her design skills and instincts with these beautiful cardigan sweaters! Yes! The Menno Ivy League Cardigan comes in Prussian Blue (pictured at left), Wine (pictured below), and Viridian–that’s green to you and me. :)

Also included with the sweater is a shirt with matching color necktie. A “fat pack” is available that contains all three sweaters and all three shirts, plus an extra shirt with a black tie, so you can mix and match to your heart’s content. The pack also includes the Men’s Signature Jeans (pictured). (more…)
