To begin with, in second life, I’m a DJ and manager at The Wharf. I host events for other Djs, as well. If you’ve never been to the Wharf, you are missing out on a fantastic place. Chester Howley and Finnegan Chesnokov are the dynamic duo that own the place, and have made it into the awesome place it is today. I love to talk to and meet people. And I love to share my music – hence the DJ thing.
You could say that I spend a great deal of time in and around music on SL. I enjoy exploring various places, whether its a music club, seeing interesting builds, or going shopping and doing things with my friends. I have met some fantastic people, and have grown very close to a few. (more…)

Kith: I was really excited when Ryan first asked me to participate in his guest stylist column. But then came the ‘oh my god what do I wear’ part, so for days I was sifting through my wardrobe trying to find something suitable. Finally I settled on something casual and ‘me’ for the most part by simply pulling together some of my favorite pieces from my inventory. (more…)

This year, rather than doing one big “round-up” of Halloween ideas, I thought I’d put together a series of costumes and post them individually in the several days leading up to Halloween. I thought this would not only be more fun, but might also give you a little extra time to do your shopping. I have no idea how many posts there will ultimately be in this series, but I’m hoping for something in the neighborhood of “several,” so check back for more! (more…)

When Iris floated “grunge” as the theme for this issue, she said, by way of suggestion, “Think Mad Max…think Tina Turner.” Ah, I thought, I know what she means—post-apocalyptic fashion. The Thunderdome! But when I started hitting up friends for their favorite grunge outfitters, they mentioned a number of designers, all doing creative work that’s at least as different as it is similar. Is grunge like indecency? Do people just know it when they see it? It seems that grunge is, or at least can be, many things to many people. Here I’ve taken a rather broad view, from urban back-alley chic to grunge kitty gear to steampunk wasteland hardware to, yes, post-apocalypse couture. I invite you to indulge yourselves. (more…)

It was a dark and stormy night when the taxi dropped me off at the high iron gates of Miskatonic University, at Arkham, Massachusetts. The driver seemed nervously distracted and sped away quickly into the darkness after unceremoniously hurling my heavy bags to the curb, but not, I noticed, without first grimacing in apparent annoyance at the paucity of the tip I had given him. I am, after all, a struggling student—now officially so—and as a consequence I must carefully mind my budgetary expenditures. (more…)

…and yet they all belong.
Sometimes a guy just wants a new shirt or two. It’s not that there’s nothing else to wear, or that the old ones suck now. It’s just that there’s nothing else quite like a cool new shirt. Tell me I’m wrong. For today’s SL style outing, I’ve pulled together a double handful of new and newish shirts that might just do it for you, along with some great new hairstyles by Aemilia Case.
For starters, check out these thermal shirts by Zabitan Assia. These have been out at FORM (and have been sitting in my inventory) for a little while now, but as usual I can’t get over the quality of the texture work and the subtlety of the imagery. The design at left is called “Divinity,” and it prominently features an elaborate cross done in dusty, muted colors. (more…)

The Pirate of the Prairie
Pirates can be a bit harder to spot on land. They tend to dress very differently than do sea pirates. Some might argue that a better term would be highwayman, but I’d have to argue back that there are no highways across the prairie–just the rails that mark the old paths of the great iron horse. Land pirates have the same base motives as their seagoing brethren, though: they’re happy to assist with parting you from your money, or from anything they might feel they need more than you do. All in all, they’re much the same, certainly a bit dustier, and no more welcome as unexpected guests than those traveling under the Jolly Roger. And their lives can be just as lonely. (more…)

He barely remembers being on the ship any more–it was too long ago, and he was too young. It’s hard to know what to make of the confusing memories of being in the great wooden box, floating on the water, surrounded by it on all sides. The feeling he has in the memories seems to him something like the way he feels when he’s safe at home in the tree houses, but not nearly so pleasant, and out in the middle of water. This he does not understand. After all, none of them care much for water, except to drink. Falling into pools of it is very unpleasant, not that he ever does that any more–he suddenly feels much more powerful and graceful now than he did before, his footing more sure–and crossing the great expanse of water that surrounds their little ball of land is…not forbidden so much as inconceivable. Why forbid it? It would be like saying, “You shall not walk to the Moon.” What difference would that make? (more…)

In 1949 George Orwell’s cautionary tale against totalitarianism and democratic socialism was published. Within the world of the novel 1984, social and political upheaval have resulted in a dystopian future. Institutional propaganda, complete subordination to political cause, sexual oppression, concentration camps and leader worship (Big Brother) weigh down on the masses. Personal expression is a crime.
Though his main store location is influenced by the novel and movie, Broder Kubrick’s creations attempt to break away from the standard issue to provide his own brand of gritty clothing and accessories in BroGear. The derelict shop is situated within an isolated, stone-set market amid large Stalin-esque banners of Broder, His Supreme Imminence, that warn “Big Broder is Watching” and “War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength”. As shoppers peruse the goods within, loudspeakers intermittently blaze with news of wartime progress. (more…)
